[Q] Update or Upgrade a Rom? - HTC One V

Might sounds like a stupid question.... but..
How would someone upgrade/update his current Paranoid Rom? (or any custom Rom...)
I installed it on ~Nov 27th and since then there's a new version available.
Should I just re-flash the kernel (if it's new) and re-install the Rom in recovery?
Do I really have to do a factory reset again?
I might only have one post, but don't be afraid to go technical. I've been lurking and reading around here for a while, it's kind of a shame I can't post anywhere else just to comment on some roms or offer my help (programmer as a living...nothing as complex as a kernels or roms, but still useful )
Thanks in advance.

download the latest version and flash it in recovery after flashing boot.img from fastboot

You can do a dirty flash, which is flashing directly over what you have now, of you can use one of the backup apps like titanium and back up your settings, then go into recovery and wipe system data and cache and flash the ROM. Doing a dirty flash you might run into problems, not that's not a for sure thing.

[Q] Rom manager installs corrups phone

Everytime I install a custom rom on rom manager, it has corrupted my phone and each and everytime I'd have to restore it. Is there any way to fix it? I've seen comments on the custom roms and people have commented that it works fine on the DHD.
Hi drkhrsy
Kindly explain further by your meaning of corrupt? This would allow us here to clearly understand the problems you're facing. Thanks.
Well I first installed cyanogenmod 7 and that gave me the boot loop. After restoring the phone I thought I'd try another ROM, so I went to download the TB 7.0.3 ROM and that booted up the phone but I had constant popups on HTC sense force closing and couldn't do anything else so I had to restore the phone again. So yeh, I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing those roms, multiple fcs normally indicate that you didn't try a full wipe then reflash either of your chosen roms.
Full wipe as in factory settings?
Well I've installed a new RUU after the boot loop problem, isn't that considered as a full wipe? or should I just do a wipe again now?
I had that horrible boot loop aswell after installing Rom.manager but I fixed it with a ruu
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Installing a new RUU does not constitute that you have full wipe any data and cache. As the ROM you tend to flash is, in a small or large extent, relatively different from that of RUU. That why we always advised to do a full wipe whenever we wish to flash ROMs. Else it will cause some issues such as Force Close issues.
You have to boot into recovery and select Wipe Data and Wipe Cache. That you will consider yourself that you have wipe those data and caches. Then now you can flash the desired ROM in your list.
In addition, before flashing is best to do a Nandroid back-up.
Also do check on your recovery version before you flash any ROMs as different ROMs need/may require different version in order to be flashed successfully(i.e. no or minimal issues)
Cheers mate.
aiight sweet, I'll give that a go.

You're most welcome.

Memory serving EVERY ROM says you MUST perform a wipe of data and cache if coming from a different ROM. This is custom ROM 101. Please read instructions thoroughly before doing things like this. The ROM devs don't spend their free time writing instructions just for the hell of it.
Regarding ROM Manager, don't you get asked if you want to wipe data and cache when you flash a new ROM (or is that not an option on the free version)?
Yeh I do get asked for wiping data and cache, I do that and it just seems to still screw up. Also backing up my files through clockwork seems to make my phone get stuck on the HTC boot up screen which requires me to reformat using the RUU file.
I would suggest re-flashing the recovery.img file.
Also, are you using the same cwm-r version to restore as used to create backup? For example, If version 2.x.x.x was used to backup you can't use 3.x.x.x to restore.

I've just checked my CWM-R version and its recovery version is at 3.0.2.6 hmm now I cant get into the recovery boot screen :S. I'd just most likely restore the phone again and try root the phone again. but thanks anyway
nvm I got in the recovery boot. Yeh the CWM-R are the same version.

I think you miss understand. I don't mean do they match wherever you look.
Did you make the original backups using version 3.0.0.x or 2.5.x.x?

Also when i try to flash the mods to the rom and it also fail and i have to do the same procedure again and again everytime i try to flash a rom or backup. What should i do? Oh i also have S-OFF if that helps.

Not a different recovery..the same way you flashed that rom is the same way you can flash others..if you downloaded rom through rom manager you can find it in that folder which is on your sd card called clockworkmod

Not a different recovery. Just make sure that your CWM recovery is the latest version. Download a ROM of your choice from the Dev section via your computer, transfer to your SDcard, and flash manually from your phone (not using ROM manager). Do a cache/dalvik cache/full data wipe. Then flash the ROM and reboot.
ROM manager can often have issues with bad downloads that lead to bad flashes. Flashing manually can be a way to troubleshoot and take a potential bad step out of the equation.

You can download roms from dev section from your device as well.
As far as the op..what do you mean you downloaded from a youtube video and you don't trust people who past roms? If you don't trust people don't mess with it. The devs here aren't going to brick you phone..that's a mistake on your end or you not paying attention to what you were flashing

Correct me if I'm wrong but if i remember correctly it is extremely difficult to brick ones phone. The worst possible thing that could happen is if your phone some how died during a flash half way through. You can easily boot into bootloader, enter recovery and attempt to do it again.
With CWM you can mount the sd card in the mounts and storage settings so if you forgot or somehow deleted the Rom Zip from your card you can easily and safely access your card using CWM
i'm having the same issue
i have the phone rooted, s-off, and hboot installed
i'll boot into rom manager, wipe the data/cache, install the rom i want, reboot device... i get the white htc screen for about 5 seconds and then the phone restarts.
when it restarts, i get the white htc screen and then it boots into rom manager
what could be causing this? i had my previous g2 rooted and never had these issues when i was flashing roms

[Q] What kernel

Noob question, again.
I successfully rooted my One V, GSM. I want to flash this custom ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640995
What kernel i should i use, or do i need to flash kernel at all? And does that ROM have languages, i want to use finnish. More noob questions: In TWRP, do i make a nandroid backup, and is that i can flash the stock ROM if i am not happy with custom ROMs?
For Suprimo ROM,use this kernel
boot-TK-USB-201212251804.img from
http://www.mediafire.com/?e1chs7tzcsstc.
Its the sense kernel, works with sense ROMs.
Yes,flash the TWRP recovery and make a backup of the stock ROM before flashing anything.you can restore it whenever you like.
And yes,you will have to flash the kernel or your custom ROM won't boot.

And i selected "BACKUP" on TWRP, and backed up System, Boot and Data, Recovery and cache, is that enough, can i now proceed to flashing custom ROM and kernel? Does it matter what order i do it, first kernel or custom rom? Sorry for stupid questions but i am quite nervous so i need to confirm that do i do stuff correct, my first Android phone and now cannot afford a new so don't want to brick it! =)
And can i use Hasoon2000's All In One kit or is this done in TWRP to flash kernel, and how i backup the original kernel, or is it even possible? As you can see i am a quite big noob.. It's better to ask than to be sorry, right? So that should be a good kernel for this? Should i be in recovery mode, in bootloader or what if i use the All In One kit?
I prefer flashing kernel before flashing ROMs.the boot.img is backed up.if you open the backup, you will find the boot.img.
Yes,the toolkit will flash the kernel.

So if i did backup those things what i said in earlier post, should i be fine? System, boot, cache, data, recovery are backuped in TWRP using the "Backup" menu.
Should i be in bootloader when i flash the kernel?
E: Does it take long to get forward from the boot screen (thats coming after that HTC queitly brilliant logo), now my phone is in this text which says "htc Desire HD" and "beats audio" in bottom of screen, i did flash the kernel.
E2: Never mind, it just took time, first time always bit slow huh? I find this funny that when i boot my phone i get "HTC Desire HD" text, although it is One V. Now just waiting that it unlocks my SIM card and sets up my phone. Glad to see all went fine. =)

Please help. Think I have bricked it!

So, I was relocking my HOX in order to get the OTA JB update from carrier (H3G) in order to use the new Viper ROM.
All went well and managed this. Got re rotted and installed CWM ans Super SU.
However, I read that before installing the JB Viper ROM it was important to do a full wipe. Using CWM i did this. Specifically I did the wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and format system.
Now my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen. Please help.
Thanks
You formatted system, which basically wiped the rom. Reflash and don't format system.

And don't forget to flash the boot.img file !
Thanks for the quick response and apologies for the basic and wrongly termed questions. Just panicking a little.
How do i get the ROM and boot.img on to the fone? Because it sticks at the white screen the pc doesn't seem to detect it.
Last time i used a stock RUU and followed that process. Will i be able to flash the new Viper ROM instead?
thanks
The boot.img is supposed to be flashed from the PC. To get the Rom into the phone you need to go back to clockworkmod, go into mounts and storage and press the mount usb thing
Edit - to flash the boot.img find a thread about fastboot. Don't worry you'll get there
To get the ROM on the phone boot into cwm and GOTO mounts & storage
Then mount USB storage
It should now be detected as a drive on your PC and you can copy the ROM back over

Thanks. I did as you guys suggested and was able to install the Viper ROM (used the tweaked stock kernel as recommended in the download).
So have a ROM now but I have no service with my carrier and when I try to connect to wifi it says 'error'. Have I missed or done something wrong?
Cheers

Got it resolved. I had used the tweaked kernel and assumed that this was not standard, so when asked about which kernel i was using i said it wasn't the viper one.
So i went back to basics and used the kernel that came with the ROM zip and just flashed both. Working fine now. The only question is whether I could have used the tweaked kernel and answered yes to using the viper version?
Thanks for your help. Felt like I have learned a fair bit in the last 12 hours though!
Well if you flashed a different custom kernel you can answer that with the question so it won't load the stock modules but backs up the custom modules from the custom kernel. This way it won't mess up functionality.
When you use a boot.img without it proper modules it can mess up those things you experienced. Hope i make my self clear

[Q] Rom Question

I'm having issues flashing multiple roms of the 4.x.x Roms. The only rom so far I have been able to install and actually run on my phone is TweakWiz V2. I have tried many other roms and they just stay in a boot loop screen. Examples are with the Avatar rom it just stays on the mask an keeps going and going. I have tried CyanogenMod/Cyan Kang an it just stays on the Circle with the bar going around on the inside.
I am running the TWRP Touch Recovery. I also have the latest Radio update and everything else is updated on my phone.
I also let the install itself run for 10+ minutes everytime. But all the roms I try they keep doing the exact same thing and staying in a boot loop.
Can anyone give me any tips or suggestions to maybe something I could do to use another rom or maybe even a suggestion to something I may have overlooked.. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
An if you need me to give any other information let me know an I will provide.

1.Im using the latest TWRP.
2. Wiping System, Cache, Dvalik or whatever. I wipe everything in the usual instructions. And I make a backup of previous ROM. Flash the ROM then the G-Apps.
3. After I flash I let the ROM run its course an I wait from 15-45 mins for the ROM to load if it doesnt I switch back to TweakWiz or try another.

try using this recovery since the recovery you are using is the latest one and technically for 4.3 ROMs, give this a shot http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-hercules.tar its the same recovery but lower . the steps you clarified seem very proper but your recovery may be at fault crossing fingers try flashing that recovery through odin or download the zip from the same website and report back after trying to flash again
Are you sure you are wiping DATA also?
You will need to do this, if you are flashing a 4.2 or 4.3 ROM, then you will also want to wipe the pre-load. Then flash the rom, and gapps.
Use the newest TWRP 2.6.1.0 to flash anything, don't need an older recovery to flash older ROM's.

Because I've been flashing ROMS on different phones an I have never had any issues before. I was using ICS an GB etc before an just recently decided to upgrade an use the JB (I think that's the name.) on my phone.
