I'm sure similar questions have been asked already but I find myself in a fairly unique position whereby my old phone was SLCD and Three UK replaced it with an AMOLED Desire under warranty. I can now either keep this one or complain and get it replaced. Which would be the better option in this scenario?
Thanks

Depends on you, AMOLEDS draw approx 3x more power when displaying white pixels, has a higher chance of getting a burn-in, but they use virtually no power when displaying black/ dark colours. SLCDs performs better under sunlight when compared to AMOLEDs, and they don't use Pentile matrix.
I would never do it... Images looks more beautiful on the AMOLED, believe me...

Since you live in the UK where there is not much bright sunlight, you may as well stick with the AMOLED.
Engadget recently did a comparison of the SLCD and AMOLED desires and the AMOLED one came out with the better battery life. If I had both in my hands I would just pick the one which has the most honest colours.
The colours aren't really of much concern. There seems to be a slight pinkish tint on the AMOLED but it really isn't that bad. Nor do I care about seeing it in sunlight (I live in the UK). The only thing that slightly bothers me is the fuzzy text, but since I don't have them both side by side I can't do a proper comparison. What do others think of the layout of the pixels on the AMOLED display as compared with the SLCD?

Having held them both side by side today I would still pick the amoled, the low black levels make for am immense movie watching and e- reading experience ( white text on a black background is really restful foot the eyes to read) the only time text trading is a problem is the SMALLEST red text on a black screen, so hardly ever!

Hmm... I guess I'll just go to a Three store tomorrow and compare for myself. I'm very picky about this sort of thing and I don't want to have a phone I'm not happy with for the next 1 1/2 years or so. In a way I could be considered lucky being able to pick, but I find it's usually more of a misfortune in my case.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
Hi all,
Has anybody else noticed a yellowish tint to their screen, especially when displaying lighter colours, white, light blue etc?
This only seems to be the case when looking directly at the screen. If I look at it from any sort of angle the yellow tint is not there.
Any info or confirmation that others are experiencing this too would be much appreciated. If this is a hardware issue then I will return my phone.
Thanks all

Sorry to bump this, but I assume the lack of replies means I'm alone with this issue?
Should I get my unit replaced or is this a software issue?
Thanks
Mine is quite yellow too against my S2. Decided it must be faulty and it's going back.
Going to stick to my S2 with Cyanogen as it's much better...
When I go into my settings screen it has a yellowish tint in the bottom half of the screen where the top half is black.
When I go into my app drawer the background is black as it should be.

The gradient in the settings background is a feature.

I have not noticed any yellow screen in the settings menu myself.
I have been reading that the Galaxy SII had similar yellow tint problems when released and that it was corrected with a software fix?
I'm more worried that this isn't a hardware fault more than anything, software faults don't worry me too much as I'm happy to wait for a fix...comes with the territory when owning a smartphone
Think I will be returning my handset, the yellow tint combined with the volume problem is doing my head in!
I have been watching a few you tube clips and i don't see much yellowish tint on theirs but then again it does go completely black in the app drawer.
It really doesnt faze me as much as the volume issue though.
is it a problem or a feature?
I don't really know what to say, but let me give you my 2 cents.
First, AMOLED screens are all different for some reason, and I can vouch for this as I replaced my Nexus one 9 times for power button and various other issues, and each time the color temperature was different. Some were warmer (with a red tint) while others were cooler (blue tint). If you swap it, you might get a better tint, maybe even white if you're lucky.
Second, the Nexus S also had a tint problem (yellow tint) just like yours. The two display models at my BestBuy both are VERY YELLOW compared to my HTC Sensation and look really bad, but it might be because their screens were ruined from being on for so long. There was a post on XDA in the Nexus S forums who said he swapped until he got a "white tint" but then Google actually updated the Nexus S with different Color Settings and totally washed out his screen, while yellow tinted ones actually got better. If Google releases a color patch, you might not like it, but I don't think they will after the backlash from the Nexus S one.
tl;dr Get it swapped, it's a hardware issue. Swap until you get one you like, you paid for it, you deserve it.
Oh geez here go again, i thought the yellow tint was going to die with the galaxy s ii, guess not, it's alive again on the galaxy nexus , i swapped my galaxy s ii because the yellow tint was too distracting, in low "backlight" the white looked yellow , the one i got is less yellow but the colors dont pop as much as on the first galaxys ii i had

You're going to want LCD if you want perfection, but you'll give up great blacks and thinness+battery life, not to mention the phone entirely.
Keep swapping, took my 9 tries but it was worth it for my Nexus One

I've got the same 'issue'. While I understand it is a feature, it really looks odd/very greyish, especially on auto brightness.
BTW I'm starting to like that yellow tint. It really is helpful when browsing the Internet, because it's more pleasant for the eye.

Got mine today. The yellow tint was the first thing I noticed. I know it's fixable, but it's annoying.

OMG, is it really as bad as in this video?
The Galaxy Nexus screen looks so yellow compared to iPhone 4S display
It looks like he has auto-brightness enabled on the Galaxy Nexus.. it looks yellower unless you turn up the brightness.
The whites on the iPhone 4 are ridiculously clean and white, no phone compares to it. The blacks on the Nexus are also ridiculous and no phone (except other Super AMOLED phones) compare to it.
Take your pick, better whites, better blacks. The iPhone screen is still tops, but it's small. I have an iPhone 4 and a Nexus (just sold a GS2).
If I compare the screens side by side, then yeah, the utter blinding white of the iPhone 4 makes the Nexus white look kind of eggshell white, just not as bright or crisp. But using the Nexus on it's own and it's fine, white looks white enough when not being compared to the iPhone. The colors on the nexus are much more vivid and true to life than on the iPhone.
Nexus also has crisper text than on the iPhone 4 believe it or not. There is no perfect screen, all have +'s and -'s, you just have to pick which +'s you like best. For me it was the insane resolution, size and color accuracy of the Nexus. It's plenty bright, just not plenty white when compared to the ifruit.

iPhone doesn't have Roboto
definately noticed the yellow tinge... bloody Samsung!
actually the yellow issue on the GN appears to be because of the colour profiles that have been set in a similar way to how google updated the nexus S and altered the colors.
in AMOLED screens overtime the colours actually fade and become less vibrant now blue usually goes first and is at a much faster rate than the other colours.
considering that this fading occurs perhaps they deliberatly make the colours a bit 'warmer' to offset the blue fade time.
this was also interesting:
"Color balance issues
Additionally, as the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light. This variation in the differential color output will change the color balance of the display and is much more noticeable than a decrease in overall luminance.[63] This can be partially avoided by adjusting colour balance but this may require advanced control circuits and interaction with the user, which is unacceptable for some users. In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors. More commonly, though, manufacturers optimize the size of the R, G and B subpixels to reduce the current density through the subpixel in order to equalize lifetime at full luminance. For example, a blue subpixel may be 100% larger than the green subpixel. The red subpixel may be 10% smaller than the green."
its quite possible that the tints that are experienced on oled devices are probably deliberate to offset the problems with oled technology.
So, anybody else have a chance to hold two E4GT's side by side? My wife and I are both trialing units, and mine has a much more pronounced bluish tint. I remember reading something about variability with Super AMOLED Plus screens, but the significance of the difference surprised me.
It's not that either one is so much better or worse, but they sure are different...

Settings>Display>Screen Mode. One of you could have messed with that setting. There are three basic settings that change the picture settings on the phone. Dynamic, Standard, and Movie.
I remember reading from someone who calibrates screen colors who tested this phone.
When new, screen has green tint as it ages it gets blue tint , movie setting has the most neutral colors.
My screen has green tint you only notice it when comparing another phone LCD or with HDMI on your tv
Edit I forgot I noticed my pictures have a green tint but that problem bad white balance ,compare a picture or the same screen with another good phone et4g has green tint in pictures too

Actually yes. My buddy has one too. Our screen settings are the same. Set with the same settings, and same wallpaper, his blacks are deeper and more defined and colors much robust. Both screens set to standard under display type

Just picked up an AT&T one x and I've owned an international one x for about a month. Immediately I noticed the colors were warmer/more yellow on the AT&T one x. Side by side, it almost makes the international one x screen look like super amoled on the whites (way too blue).
I put them at the same brightness, and the AT&T one x has noticeably better viewing angles. WAY better in fact. Also, looking at pictures I took with each phone, the AT&T one x has way more accurate/true to life colors.
Overall the warmer screen is far superior, which makes me wonder why so many people on this forum were worried that they have the yellow screen. Fact is, it's not really yellow, it's just that the other screen is WAY too cool/blue and not accurate at all as far as colors go.
Most people are used to cool (blue) colors on their screens - that's what most LCDs look like until you use a color profile. It's even worse on laptops.
I love my "warm" HOX screen, I'm unhappy just because it has a few yellow spots that don't seem to go away...
I agree and don't know if anyone noticed, the yellow screen has a cleaner pixel grid, you can't see the grid if you look close unlike the colder one
still both r still very impressive so no worries
Does the yellow go away? I've read elsewhere this is the case
Ty
Aj
I have the colder screen and never had any problem with viewing angles
My only complaint is that some yellows are going green
Though the solution is the app called ''screen adjuster'', just boost +5/+7 on red

bro, do you very faint glue "grain" effect when viewing pure white at an angle?
Nope!
Screen adjuster is excellent. I added + 6 to blue levels just to tone down the warmth, now the screen is perfect.
It's not too cool that whites have a blue look but not yellow either.

Anyway to check if mine is the warmer one or cooler one??
Hello,
I have a HTC One X, and I realized recently that my screen (the entire screen) was yellowish. I compare it with the X One of my friends, their screens is white (so white that looks like being blue).
Why do my colors are, overall, yellow rather than white?
I've done the updates, I have the original theme, and brightness at maximum.
Do you have the same problem as me?
Should I bring him back in the store?
I suggest you have it replaced immediately.
The original unit that was given to me had that yellowish tint, I think its a screen burn? or a factory defect.
Had the shop replaced it immediately.
Your screen should not be yellow. It definitely looks like the yellow spot issue but in my experience they do not go away. definitely get it replaced or send it to HTC for repair if they can't replace it.
Is it yellowish/yellow spots or just a little warm in tone?
If it's the latter then you have the better of the 2 screens available as colours are more accurate and the screen is brighter. As you say, your friends phone is too blue.
It can be deceiving as the clock widget for instance is not a true white so can through you off.
Best way to evaluate is display a true white blank image and you should see that it looks white and not blue (cold) or yellow (warm). I use Dead Pixel Tester which has a variety of colours you can display
i own a yellowish and a whiteish one , and surprise surprise.... the yellowish is a lot better than the other
Mine is also very yellowish, compared to my wife's sensation or to an amoled display. The colors look very ok to until i compare side by side..
I do not think it is a defect...
Guys! Don't forget to set brightness to same level when comparing. I noticed my white screen actually looks more yellowish than the warmer screen when on lowest brightness settings. However, at a higher brightness it definitely has a whiter white and it seems brighter.
I got the yellow-dot-issue yesterday :'( I have had the phone since release day and now blah, damn it! will contact HTC tonight and tell you what they say

This is not a defect. HTC One X screens are manufactured by several sources. Some come with a blueish/whiteish tint, others with a yellowish tint. I have had both units. I prefer the blueish/whiteish tint, but both screens are very good.

I also have the Yellowish Screen, I solved this problem long ago when I had my SGS2 as the Super Amoled Plus had a greenish tent with Screen Adjuster, A great app from the market, Just increase the blue to 7 or 9 and all the yellowish tent will disappear.

It's been that way since the Sensation. One display is made by Acer (cool) and the other by Sharp (warm). The XL uses Sony displays exclusively for some reason.
Here's the two different displays on the Sensation...
Yup don't worry too much. Not a problem. Even iPhone 4S'es screens are manufactured by different suppliers. My screen is the cooler one, but both have their advantages. My dad's iPhone 4S has the warmer screen, but colours look more vibrant. My One X has the cool screen, which is less vibrant in terms of colour, but more accurate.
