Third Party Keyboards - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, weirdly I can't find any threads about this so I wanted to create this for both my own benefit and hopefully the other users of this forum. The kindle fire can use third party keyboards with the use of the nook tools app, essentially bringing in the functionality that the kindle fire settings application covers up by not having it available. I have downloaded what I have decided is just about every keyboard under the sun and NONE of them work! Everything force closes and makes my kindle become a land of mayhem and forceclosing until I reapply the stock keyboard. I am running MoDaCo 9.2 which is based on 6.3.1 (i believe, whatever the latest OTA is), is this something that Amazon did with the software to prevent 3rd party keyboards from working or does anyone know of any keyboards that work? I HATE the stock amazon keyboard, so I would really like to replace it if anyone knows of a compatible keyboard. Thanks!!

bump - I find it hard to believe nobody knows of any working third party keyboards or at least knows whether this feature was "broken"

I believe you would have to move to keyboard apk to data/system

yeah, sorry, I forgot to mention that, but yes. This is happening after I move it to system/app, the nook tools app won't see it until it's in system/app.

Fix Swype W/ Custom ROM

I have been seeing a few new Andriod users out there that are unfamiliar with the way things work (software wise). One annoying repetitive complaint is "I installed a custom rom and now my swype is gone!ZOMGWTF!"... Well DUH you formatted you phone and installed over anything that was originally your phone...
But fear not PC challenged newbs, there is a simple solution:
Sign up for Swype Beta at beta.swype.com and install that, this info is everywhere but one more place can't hurt...
(Yellow box, vibrate, and no output with Swype enabled.)
Well now here come the other typical complaints (and solutions),
"Now I have to select Swype as user input everytime I want to type or it doesn't work, pfft FAIL!!!"
(Solution 1: Do not install to Swype as an App2SD and be sure it resides on your phone like a good little app.
Solution 2: Using a root uninstall application (or manually) remove the gingerbread 2.3.3 keyboard (or other version that is not Swype).)
Re-install the gingerbread keyboard if you really want it and you are winning bigger than Charlie Sheen, the keyboard will now no longer trump the Swype and you can go about your merry way. EDIT: Some phones lose connection to the Swype library even if Swype is the only soft keyboard installed and is not on the SD card, in this case installing a second soft keyboard AFTER installing Swype will fix the issue.
"Now every reboot I have to re-select the Swype keyboard."
See Complaint #2
So basically if you want Swype with no issues, install it after ROM flash and then uninstall other keyboards using root.
Now people please quit *****ing about Swype not being inlcuded in your "favorite" ROM and take some initiative and fix it yourself.
And for those that say ... Ha ha ha, should have used Titanium Backup, you are dead WRONG and have never used Titanium Backup to restore a factory installed Swype... It won't work no matter how hard you rub Buddah's belly.
EDIT: Posted this info to keep the threads a bit more cleaner from all the non-ROM related issues people post... I'm so sorry that your phone cannot microwave my pizza while bluetoothing with a custom ROM. Hopefully someone else feels my sarcasm.
The important thing I've noticed is to just make sure the keyboard is installed onto the phone. You shouldn't have any problems with it disappearing after a reboot if it's on your phone instead of the SD. This will make it so you don't have to bother with the hassle of removing the stock keyboard.
these methods should help but i believe swype on this phone is garbage (i have big fingers), but it is helpfull my wife enjoys the swype keyboard and this helps me when i go to root her phone.
Glad to help. Hope I didn't come off too sarcastic and some people got a laugh. Also to explain why it cannot be on a ROM, it is licensed software not available under the GNU.

Use the SlideIt keyboard. It is much easier to use. You an go from tap to slide mid word and a bunch of other intuitive moves. Plus, it doesn't have the voice command button for you to accidentally hit.
I have signed up for the swype beta before and im not sure if i had it on sd or not, but when i tried typing a yellow box would come around the swype keyboard and i had to select the stock keyboard and then select the swype keyboard again for it to work right, will having it on the phone fix that?
Uninstall stock keyboard, then reinstall keyboard. Goofy I know but it works. Should be on the OP. There seems to be a bug in the software when reconnecting to the library if it is not the only or first installed soft keyboard. I had to do this as well and have not had a problem since.

inb4 "Why doesn't Swype swipe?"
Swype often doesn't swipe after you reboot your phone. The easiest way to fix that is switch your Input Method away from Swype (e.g. to the stock keyboard) then back to Swype.
If you follow my OP Swype will always work.

I uninstalled the main gingerbread keyboard and left swype as my only one and still get the no swyping error often. I had to download a kb from the market just to reinstall swype and see if it will behave now.
My Swype only works when it was installed stock kb removed and a new kb from the market was installed in that order, other ov might not require a kb installed. One of my ov phones doesn't.

theres probably an easier way. check the g2 forums. i think there is an app called swyperestore or soemthing along those lines. basically it imports your swype with your swype license to your new rom from a nandroid.
although...not sure if it would work on the v....
Anyone tried what I do on the g2? I'll try today, moving the lib file swype has and installing swype along with it makes it work on my g2.
My current fix is I used titanium backup to freeze and delete the android keyboard.when I reset the phone if swype still isn't working I freeze and unfreeze swype in titanium and it's worked every time.I'm working on changing how android associates with the keyboard to see if it's maybe still trying to use droid keys

installed swype beta. worked. rebooted blue box error. used a root uninstaller app to uninstall android keyboard. rebooted and it worked
Congrats, glad the how-to helped. Would be rough typing on this tiny keyboard without Swype or other similar program.
Anybody find themselves pressing the . instead of the space far too often? It gets kind of annoying, at least in portrait view. Also, "at" being constantly mistaken for "arty" seems kind of ridiculous. Despite that, I love swype, and this is coming from a physical qwerty junkie!
Awesome, thank you. No issues with your OP.
How do you remove the GB KB?
My swype beta didn't work, so I junked it. Now after reading this, my only question is what app or how do I remove the Gingerbread keyboard? (I don't see it as an app, is there an app that will remove it?)
Thx.
Use titanium backup.

[Q] Ginger bread Keyboard for our screen

Anyone know where to get the Gingerbread keyboard for a screen our size? I downloaded one of the apk's and its made for a 3" screen or something like that. I love this phone but hate the samsung/swype keyboards.
I downloaded "keyboard from Android 2.3" from the market and I really like it so far.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
i thought the stock samsung keyboard was basically the gingerbread keyboard that came with the phone
I am pretty sure that the stock keyboard is Samsung's take on it. Just like TW, this is their keyboard.
Also I downloaded the Keyboard from android 2.3 off the market. I'm very pleased with it as well
I downloaded it as well, but when you go to install it, there is a warning that says, "...Gingerbread keyboard application may collect all the text you type, including passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal data. Continue?" I hit "Cancel." Is this normal for a keyboard from the market to ask?
I am pretty sure that is normal, of all the keyboards that i have tried in the past they all gave me a warning like that, i think that it is a built in message just for safety reasons but i have never had a problem with it
I saw that too, but I didn't worry too much about it. I don't use my phone to enter credit card numbers or anything like that.

Yes, if you installed a Swype beta in the past it included this as well IIRC

All you have to do is long press in any text box and select "input method" when the option pops up. It will ask you to choose between sammys take on either Swype or the stock Gingerbread keyboard. Hope that helps
If it was in a rom.. Then go into the zip file and open it up.
1. Open ____.zip file. (aka your rom)
2. Go to system/apps/
3. Now look for the keyboard that your looking for.
4. Extract it.
5. Find the apk file where you extracted it and then go to your phone and place the apk file in your phones sd card or usb storage.
6. Install it and it should work.. But idk. If it force closes then its not fit for the screen and firmware
6.

[Q] Photoshop Touch on Kindle Fire?

I'm curious if anyone has tried to load any of the Adobe tablet apps onto the Kindle Fire, and if so, did they work?
I picked up a Kindle Fire yesterday, but haven't opened it yet, mainly because I don't want to find out the hard way that it won't be able to use awesome tablet apps that are currently only available in Google's Android Market.
I've heard that you can sideload apps on the Kindle Fire, but I'm not sure if that would work in this situation since it is a paid app that requires the Android Market. I don't have any other tablets, and when I went to buy the Photoshop Touch app on the Android Market website, it told me it wasn't compatible with any of my devices (only have Android phones so far).
I am guessing it would work, but the resolution is going to cause some of the Gui elements to be cut off, just like the HTC Flyer.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
I tried to install it. It responded with a parsing error. Probably because the Fire is 2.3 and the Photo Shop Touch is only compatable with HoneyComb/ICS
Thanks for the answer. Good to know; I'll just have to wait for a port of ICS to the KF before purchasing Photoshop Touch.
and also, why not just root it? it is really a rather good tablet for it's price once it is rooted.
then you CAN get the android market on it (without having to sideload etc)
The android market website does say that Photoshop Touch is incompatible with the Fire. It says that Photoshop Express is compatible (that one is in Amazon's appstore, but the Amazon appstore says it's not compatible!) but all those other 9.99 Adobe tablet apps say they're incompatible.
has anyone tried sideloading these? if so how did you download/pay for them?
I got it to run using a custom ICS rom. I don't know about side loading tho
It works pretty well on ICS, all gui elements fit thx to fit button in ICS. But you probably will have to sideload it since kf not officially supported
Fit button?

Well, I was curious as to see if this app worked on the KF. I don't know/care what you do, but to get anything done with a Kindle Fire, you MUST root it. If you have one of the old versions (where/when did you buy it) then it comes with a heavily modded android 2.3, which does no good for anything, so I suggest that you root it with the KFU, install TWRP, and load up Ice Cream Sandwich, or Jellybean on it. I have twa_priv's latest CM10 jellybean custom ROM with the leaked 4.2 Gapps installed, and it does wonders! If you think that you would prefer a more vanilla ROM, I would go with Hashcode's; it is really good too.
Anyway, back to your dilemma/question: can you run Adobe Photoshop mobile products? the answer is yes; however, (at least for me, as my KF is not cloaked as a Galaxy Nexus) the Play store says it is incompatible. So I decided to do a google search of the latest apk, and downloaded it. Once I moved it over to my KF, it took about a minute to install (quite long, so don't worry that it isn't doing anything). I opened it up, and it works just fine. No crashes or anything; and it is a very good app, I think, after just playing with it for about 10 minutes.
So your answer is yes: first root and ROM your KF, then google search the latest apk and install it.

Questions from new owner regarding Fire HD 8.9

Hey guys, I just grabbed a KF HD 8.9 off ebay for my wife for $225. I tried to convince her to go with a Nexus7, but she wanted the larger screen. Our previous phones were Android, so she'd be familiar with the Fire if the answers to my questions are positive. Here's a few questions I have if someone can please help me out:
1) From what I've seen reading on here, we can root the device and add the Google Play store. Is this correct? Are there any caveats to this (i.e., you must to do X or Y to be able to download apps after adding it)?
2) If I can install a customer launcher for her (I don't know what the current options are, but there was Nova, Launcher Pro, GoLauncher, etc when we had Android devices), would this largely cause the device to actually LOOK like normal Android? I don't see why there would be any issues, but I just want to clarify.
3) It appears (again, from reading on here), that you can sideload apps (I used the "allow unknown sources" box on my phone). Is that correct?
4) Is the HDMI out reliable?
I would install CM10 and call it a day, but it sounds like there are currently audio and HDMI issues on it, and those are two things we'll use a good bit.
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but it was the only one I saw devoted to the 8.9" version. These questions may not really matter for the differences in model, but I wanted to be sure I targeted the right audience,
Thanks for any help provided.
I've done much of what you are asking about using the following thread:-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888
It's a long read, but worth it.
I'm using GoLauncher HD, and have live wallpapers up and running too - it looks just like any other android device.
The caveats are that some apps will not install/update from Google play - but will probably work if sideloaded. Added to that, Amazon will update your tablet and remove all your hard work if they get the chance - the thread provides tools to minimise this threat as well.
PS I've got a Nexus 7 too - much better tablet in all respects except screen size - that's why I got the KF8.9 as well.
Good luck
Thanks for the quick reply. If I remember correctly, you could disable updates on previous Android devices, is this not the case with the KFHD? The software wouldn't be the newest, but data wouldn't be wiped, either.
Amazon are pushing un-notified updates through various channels - you won't know until you suddenly lose root and all your google apps.
Very friendly user facing company NOT !!!

Interesting. In that case, I might just sideload a launcher. Didn't know it was all going to be this much trouble
I have the kindle fire hd 8.9 and it rooted fine and I have a launcher on it which makes it look like a normal android tablet with Google apps. Have had no issues yet with Amazon forcing updates but if it happens it can't be that hard to block it.... some apps in play store won't install due to compatibility issues....but market helper app solves that.. or you can install the apk manually

Thanks for the info. I doubt my wife would require many apps that are unavailable on Amazon anyways (if any).
I confirm that the HDMI works very well on my TV

Fire TV 2 (Rooted rbox) What mods/Xposed Modules do you have installed & working?

hey guys, hope this thread is ok, just thought id create one post for all to post what exactly they have installed so far with the latest root for the fire tv 2 (rbox)
i along with maybe many others, is new to rooting the fire tv, having owned a 1st gen back on launch i switched it for a htpc back before they was rootable so never got the chance to root one
now i have a 2nd gen, rooted, and looking to get it looking ass much like stock android as possible
i plan on using nova launcher as the default launcher
would love to get live wallpapers working with this (has anyone installed the module for this yet with the ftv 2? )
and of course, when available, id love to have the playstore up and running, ive been keeping my eye on threads about this
so, please feel free to share what you have installed and how well it works
I also thought about starting a thread the same as this.... I've tried Nova on here, & also been wondering what modules everyone has tried or using, only one I've heard threw the forum is a few using rbox's launcher module (not sure what its called?) so they can use there 3 party launcher as a main launcher (belive it's the same module that worked on AFTV gen 1). Hopefully this can be a good little thread if everyone helps.
Also tried to get playstore running but get as far as the 976 error when trying to install or update anything? Also tried with the Market helper apk, & using it on a 3rd party launcher (TV launcher) & a few others but nothing? Only thing is do you need that rbox module to make it work? That is the only thing I haven't tried?

nova has always been my favourite launcher, i just last night got it set up on the shield too,
never played around with xposed modules so they are all completely new to me, ive learned little bits from some posts here already
i have used rbox fire tv mod, what i am looking for mostly is the way to install live wallpapers on nova launcher, im not sure if the method from fire tv gen 1 will work
anyone used this yet?
i agree that this could become a very helpful spot for people to head to if everyone who has tried different modules adds to it
Im using fake wifi connection and it make a difference on apps like FoodNetwork. I am wondering though how do you get to or watch amazon videos with nova launcher?
I have added some xposed modules I have used to my thread some I've tested & some I haven't because when people who are looking for compatible or non working apps/accessories can look in my thread & also see the modules too in one place. But you can add them here too if you like?
My thread for working & non working compatible apps/modules/accessories for root or non root you can find here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/aftv2-best-compatible-apps-accessories-t3269267
Please add these to you're list -

HDXPosed
Renamer (this ones good I like this!)
Secure Settings
Non Tested
Rootcloak
