Ok, so normally I hate placeholders, but I'd like to give you guys an update of where I am at. Once I am finished tweaking, I will release. The base rom is done, now the modding and tweaking needs to happen.
So far:
--------------
Deodexed, Debloated, Debinged, and mostly, detouchwizzed. Debinged...even in the framework. I think* all Bing traces are gone now.
Visual voice mail gone, voice mail button in dialer opens Google Voice.
Verizon Wireless carrier banner replaced with something....better.
MMS app will not longer do multi-part messages, but instead convert to MMS automatically once the 160 character mark is hit.
GPS tweaked.
Wow in one day of having the phone you have a rom halfway competed

Wow, I can't wait for this even though we have had bad experiences with place holders, I know this isn't the case lol..
I don't know how many times I'm going to say thank you, but here is another thanks!

along the lines of changes to the voicemail button.....it would be awesome if the ticker's voicemail icon could correspond to Google Voice...but I am sure that is a lot more involved than changing the button's link in the Dialer.
a similar desire exists for the sms icon to correspond to Handcent
I used titanium backup to remove the stock messaging app and that killed the ticker's SMS icon functionality....I saved the stock app to reinstall but that introduces a different problem....the ticker icon doesn't go away reliably after having read the text in Handcent.
maybe this thread wasn't intended for our wish list items.....if that is the case, I apologize.
thanks for your help to our little Continuum family!
thanks for the help here adryn! my wife has the continuum, and i got hers to load red recovery, and the other modded rom.
question on this rom you are building..will it have the bstats and fxpms scripts? are the ones for fascinate compatable with contunuum?
thanks...

curious (warning - n00b question) - would it be possible to make the GV VM connection optional for those of us who don't use GV?
Also, what do you mean by GPS tweaked? The only thing i've noticed about mine is when i'm out geocaching with c:geo or using google maps to navigate while walking, sometimes the compass seems to be off by 180 degrees. when driving, google nav seems fine - likely since it can figure out direction based on previous locations in the same way it figures speed, but i don't walk fast enough for it to figure out direction - especially when geocaching since i'm always stopping to look for the cache.
all told - that's pretty impressive that you knocked out so much stuff in the short time you have had the phone! Thanks for your help with this device!
Any chance you have cracked open the ticker, or at least made it more useful to people who don't use the stock apps (that is... EVERYONE)?
One suggestion i saw somewhere (probably here) really interested me - put the notification area in the ticker screen and make it big enough to fill it, so you dont' have to try and hook into their custom ticker app - just use the existing system one, only relocated/resized. that way all system notifications (no matter what app they're from) will be visible in the ticker, all the time, as well as the time of day, and apps won't have to be custom-written to take advantage of the ticker; they'd just WORK.
I just can't wait till it is out I am looking forward to it

I don't have the phone right here handy atm but, I've already downloaded the Rom and alt browser. looking forward to flashing it to my boy's phone! I know he'll be happy too. One thing I love about these Android phones is how they give us the ability to have that "new phone" feeling any time we like, thanks to their rich development community. This is one thing the Continuum crowd has missed out on until now.
I have ROM toolbox lite on my galaxy, I've noticed most of the features you need the paid version to be able to access them. My question is are those features really worth the $4 price tag? I'm starting to think it's worth it but since I've never used those features I don't know for sure, so I just wanted you're guys opinion whether I should buy it or stick with the lite.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, definitely worth it. A great app and, assuming you would buy only 4 of the pay features it has from other devs for 99 cents each you are already ahead.

Are, that is tough one, sorry. No simple answers.
What ROM are you using? Gingerbread, ICS, JB?
After Gingerbread everything changed and most apps cannot handle the newer resource files. GB is easy - most icon changes are fine.
If you just want to change the battery icon and running ICS look up UOT KITCHEN. It works well for GB, it can do battery icon for most ICS ROMs, don't know about JB.
Whatever you try make sure you have a good nandroid backup! Some of the processes can damage resource files.

I just made my very first nandroid backup last night. Right now I am on the stock rom, and come to find out it's not just the battery icon that I can't change or download it's all icons. I can download other icons and after I install them I reboot my phone but still have the stock icons its just the battery icon that wont even download, even though I can download and install the other ones after rebooting the phone I'm still on stock icons. I guess I just don't know enough about the Android operating system I probably shouldn't be playing around with these things until I learn more. I'm actually thinking about getting a refund around tool box not working on my stock rom and I'm very happy with the stock rom and have no intention on flashing a new one. Sorry for my spelling and grammar and punctuation but I'm driving right now in using voice to text lol.

Pro version is definitly worth it. It is in my opinion the best all around tool to have for android. It has many very useful features and can replace a handful of different apps and puts them all in one. For example sd boost. Cpu control. Not to mention the font and boot animation installers. Very good tool to have.

I've been using the S2 for a couple weeks now and although I'm satisfied with it for the most part, I want the bloatware gone and I want it rooted. Easy enough, except for one thing; there are TONS of ROMs for it and I have no idea where to start as far as which ones are best, and don't want to have to flash dozens of them to find out.
A few things to note;
1 - I'm looking for ease of use, something that includes minimal apps or at least allows me to delete apps that are packaged with it if I don't want them, and something that gets good battery life. I read this thread here and may try Slim Beam Unofficial due to it's better battery life.
2 - Or is there a way to just rip the stock ROM off, remove what I don't want, re-package it and flash it back to the phone? That's what I did with my Evo but it's been over a year and I was VERY familiar with that phone and what tools to use for such tasks. A point in the right direction (ie: link to an informative thread on this subject) would suffice, but specific replies are very much appreciated.
3 - Useful apps would be nice. Perhaps not packaged WITH the ROM but just names of useful apps (I see Titanium Backup mentioned a lot on here) would be helpful. Something to easily copy contacts & texts/call records to my PC would also be nice - the Evo didn't have much as far as that went, at least not that I could find. Maybe some music mixing apps and memory editor suggestions too. This phone is new and exciting to me, capable of WAY more than my old Evo 4G. :victory:
4 - HTC and Samsung have much different interfaces. HTC's was more customizable...I'd like to get that back. Anyone know of any HTC interface ports? Specifically the way the icons on the screen are - I don't like being forced to keep the 4 it came with on the bottom, I'd like to change them to something more useful. Also some switches for a quick data network toggle (not by going into Data Usage to toggle) and stuff like that would be nice. I can do it the Samsung way if I have to, but HTC's interface was more user friendly for me.
Anyway, I'm glad to be back at xda. Thanks for any help/suggestions! :fingers-crossed:
Try AOKP 4.2.2
AOKP B5 3/10nightly NOS V0.0.7
Suppose I'll try that or a stock Samsung ROM. Surprised at the lack of replies and suggestions...usually everyone has something to say on this forum.

ideas:
-launcher/lock screen

-2d fighting game like art of fighting for the SNES
-multiplayer fps where you create your own map with a creative mode (minecraft style)
-roller coaster tycoon style game
-get phone out of sleep mode
-many more!
Just message me which idea you want info on and I'll tell you!

In reading your post it seems as if to me 1 you need to simply root your phone. From that point forward you can do anything you want to it. Now coming from an Evo which I myself came from, at first things seem different but when its software related its relatively all the same. I know you said you were shocked at the lack of responses but I think thats because your questions/feelings are a simple fix and more personalized than just sending you somewhere.
You dont have to use the 4 at the bottom they can be switched and data toggles are all over the web. Not for nothing but you really need to do some homework on android and the amount of customization apps out there...You are missing out on quite a bit
Steps to personalizing your phone below:
Root your phone
Install Root Explorer
install Titanium Backup
Install Android Commander on your pc (if you like)
Just use Google or Google Play to look up apps
Hundreds of way to simplify your rom and I only named a few.
Use the SGS2 toolkit, install a custom recovery, and root your phone. From there you can delete all the Tmo bloatware and clean up the stock rom.
see how that is for a little while, and if you still aren't satisfied, you can try some of the other roms in the dev section.
As far as apps, I have all my contacts in gmail, which automatically syncs to my phone. Airdroid is a neat app that lets you manage stuff on your phone through a PC that is connected to the same network. Evernote, quickpic, photoeditor, titanium backup, and google drive are a few apps I always install.

All Star Devs or Jedi Knight Roms. I ran Slim Bean for a little bit, but the bugs, as insignificant as they may seemed, would occur too frequently. I'm currently testing out Jumping JellyBeans and lets just say I'll be flashing back to Jedi Knight this evening. Good luck on your ROM Quest.
Yeah I rooted it but it still doesn't function entirely the way I want it to.
In using this phone for a couple weeks now, one BIG complaint I have is the clock & weather widget on my Evo allowed me to check the weather OR change thje time/date/alarm simply by clicking it...unless I'm blind, the SG2 didn't even come with an alarm clock, let alone a way to click the clock widget and edit alarms.
Is there anything like that for the SG2? And yes, I do need to do more research and find out what's out there...which is kinda why I'm asking here instead of spending countless hours which I don't have, reading through tons of forums and trying tons of bunk apps. You could always flash a better rom that is newer, like others have suggested. Any rom with ICS or above will have a clock that allows you to tap the widget and get the alarm, and can display the weather below it. If you're looking for a fully loaded rom, "PACman" (see the link in my signature at the bottom of this post) is the way to go. It it 3 roms built into one, "Paranoid Android, AOKP, Cyanogen Mod". I literally bought my SGSII just to be able to use the PACrom, (I came from a Tmobile MyTouch 4G (Doubleshot) which didn't have a working PACman rom link, so far as my patience to find one allowed).
Other options are to install a new launcher for your phone, like the "Go Launcher" from the play store, or an htc clock widget from the playstore or online. Either of the 2 will instantly provide you with your clock and weather settings.
I have world weather clock widget on my lockscreen. Has weather and time. I think there might be a way to configure it to set alarms, but I'm not sure. I don't really ever set alarms on my phone.
I am using JB 4.1.2 with build Jedi Mind Trick JB2 and the beta kernel as a DD and it is fast and smooth. Prior to I was using Jedi Mind Trick X4 by the same dev and I prefer JB 4.1.2 over the X4 but everyone is different.

Has anyone else experienced app icons disappearing from folders? The icon remains visible in the app drawer but isn't visible in the home screen folder.
The real strange thing is the folder treats it as though it's still there. (There's a gap where it would be) If I try to add it to the folder again, then both show up.
I'm having the problem with one app (wifi analyzer) but had experienced it before with other apps.
Any ideas or feedback is appreciated.
I'm running stock and unrooted latest update for what it's worth.

Are you using the hide icons feature in the app drawer ??
I miss a few on occasion too. ..
Try this. ..
Enable all icons again. ..then wipe cache in the recovery. ..
Then reboot and hide apps again. .
It appears to be a stock bug. ...g
This is one of those bugs that sparked my curiosity to try different ROMs.
Is there any place to read up on known issues with i317? Samsung has really dropped the ball in regards to support on their website. This seems to be the main place to ask questions but I feel like I have quite a few, some are general and others are more android specific.
I think I may be having buyers remorse now. I'm reading and trying to figure out as much as I can but it feels like I've read every book in an encyclopedia set and while I've learned new things the general things still remain unanswered or unfound. I'm not sure if it's device specific, android specific, or an app gone awry.

Every device and OS has bugs,,,it's just part of the game...
The note 2 is a solid and good running device with great support (here on XDA)...and the Rom offering is excellent as well.
If you purchased the device new, and it has any type of severe glitch...you may want to consider a warranty replacement.
Mine has always performed very well on the stock firmware, and although the TW 4.1.2 version is a bit buggy, it still performs beyond my expectations when compared to the note 1...
No regrets here at all.....g
It's been pretty solid. I just get a bit reluctant to try anything beyond stock right now because there are those little things that seem to occur. I occasionally get a blue outlined box around app icons which has left me baffled because it's a rare thing but has happened a few times.
I'm not knocking the phone or its OS. It just seems tedious to find answers to questions. I am not comparing anything with my iphone experience, because it took years for me to become a go to guy with any issues with iOS or even the hardware. I just am finding it a bit more of a challenge to locate a good sgh-i317 based sort of a knowledge base. Do you by any chance know of any good information banks? Or perhaps I should ask where's a good place to start learning more in depth about it?

The missing app icons is more of a problem for me. The blue border thing just makes me scratch my head.
Sadly if you anything aside from flipping through home screens it disappears. I've tried getting a screen capture of it and it disappears. It's almost like when you only single click something on a windows desktop. It's a rare occasional thing but drives me nuts wondering what it is or why it happens.

Everyone wants to unlock their bootloader so they can run a custom ROM, the supposed purpose being to improve performance and gain new features. But then, once they get the new ROM on there, they keep posting about all the problems they are having, and how this, that or the other doesn't work as well as stock. After goofing with every, and I mean EVERY ROM available for the Razr M, IMHO there's absolutely no reason to use a custom ROM if you are expecting "like stock" performance. It's fun, it's addicting, it can get crazy sometimes, but don't expect it to ever be "Final". More than likely, it will be abandoned the moment a new phone or Android version comes along, and you'll be left with all those unsolved FCs and "almost works" features left hanging. Sad, really.
And then there's the whole "let's take the stock ROM from some other phone entirely and try to make it work on our phone" thing. I totally don't get that. If you like the Necco Choco-Android-o-rama's OS so well, why not just buy that phone instead? I'm just sayin'...
Rooting? That's totally different. I don't know what they do in other countries for bloatware, but Verizon certainly loads up some stinker software here in the US. Tell me, unless you're really into that sort of thing, why would the average shmoe care about Zappos? I certainly don't! And, if I wanted an app for NFL football, I'm perfectly capable of picking one from Google Play, yeah? Same with all the Amazon shtuff. Yeah I get it, advertising helps cover manufacturing costs, and all that jazz. Sure they do it to every new PC from Brand Name X too, but at least you can uninstall it. So rooting is sort of revenge for hogging my limited storage space and then limiting my ability to do anything about it.
And since I'm on this rant anyway, please... PLEASE!!! No more of this "Let's see if we can make our Android look like an iPhone" crap. Or worse, "Windows 8 Phone" crap! - Ewww! That's like taking a Jaguar and trying to make it look like a Ford Pinto... you might manage it, but who the heck would want it?
This rant has been a Public Service Announcement. The thoughts and views expressed herein are not to be considered... period. :silly:
You said it!
I linked to this from my restore where I have a commentary section.
I totally agree. Don't flash ROMs if your going to complain. Its one thing to report to the devs and quite another to ***** about it. And good on ya for the entire rant.

I originally rooted and unlocked my bootloader on this phone because of the screen shake issue that a Motorola introduced in an update if that didn't happen I may not of rooted the phone its stock ROM has such a good layout its no wonder so many complain. I however knew what I was getting into. Rule of thumb to new flashers backups are your friend and don't piss off the developers.
I like stock... de-bloat it and its good to go... just wish I could find something to mod the navi bar... remove the recent apps button replace it with the menu button and change color of it...

well, the main reason why folks are not as excited about the new ROMs, is b/c there are not any ground-breaking features on the 4.2.2 or 4.3 operating systems. When I got my first android, I had Froyo. Folks were dying to get to Gingerbread in order to vastly increase performance/battery life.
the deal with Jelly Bean, is that the upgrade from stock 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 or 4.3 is minimal at best - and the changes are mostly aesthetics (although, I read that 4.3 has better bluetooth connectivity). but mostly, 4.2.2/4.3 are primarily geared towards tablets.
the race is on now to see what KitKat can bring to current phone users.
in terms of improvements, just as radorix said, these custom ROMs eliminated the shakes that I was getting on 4.1.2. so for me, while that was not a huge deal, it's enough for me to go custom.
personally, I like the tiles layout of 4.2.2 as well as the AOKP customization, so I'll stick with that for now given that my battery life/performance is stock-like.
*claps* You said it. The Razr M has actually been the first Android phone I owned where I've kept the stock ROM. I think it does fine with 4.1.2 atm, and if I really wanted a change I'd probably just theme it.
The only thing that matters to me is stability and speed. I like a fast phone and I like to o/c, push the phone. I like to test things and try to understand its problems rather than build myself because I don't have the time. If I can find the right medium between speed and stability it becomes my dd, naturally. But stock was built for a reason and every now and then I go back to 4.1.2 because I miss some of the features. Like the far left quick settings menu and Circle Clock. Why have to find a work around to add all these features and fixes to a reimagined custom OS that causes more problems when its already working? We wouldn't have anything to work with if we didn't have the source to start at!
Couldn't agree more. I've had 9 different android devices in the past 4 years. Only ones I haven't rooted are my Sony tablet s (original, don't even get me started with their abandonment of this thing, hey let's leave bugs, make a seemingly unlockable boot loader, not share any code, abandon it after realizing all the bugs exist, then support everything we make after it) and my original nexus 7. I too came back to a stock debloated deodexed ROM for the RAZR M.

Lol. Not the only Sammy device they've dropped. Heard of the Galaxy Player 4.2?
Oh and ezknives, you do realize the menu button is completely redundant right? Considering it pops up if needed and isn't even supported/required for Holo apps

Not for me... with-in various apps it does not... when on different ROMs and I removed the multitasking feature and replaced it with a menu key I was able to utilize features that was other wise inaccessible... like deleting messages in Facebook app for instance... that cannot be done without a menu button or opening your browser and requesting the desktop site... I just need my menu key its never there when I need it...and I don't know what halo apps are nor use it I don't believe...

Holo means apps designed for android 4.0+.
It's the ICS+ ui style. There should be a way to access the menu without a dedicated button - either built-in or by telling the system it's a legacy app that needs the settings button to appear

Meh. I disagree. I've been running CM since it went official and I haven't had any complaints. I experience much-better-than-stock performance and battery life, plus it is way more customizable. I love it!

I just tried it again. Froze on reboot, wouldn't let me into recovery, same BS as all the 4.3 versions. And I wrote the book, well thread, on how to install it, so yeah I wiped etc.

i'm enjoying better than stock performance on the stable 4.2.2 branch, and i built a custom kernel for CM10.1 for better performance. I tried the 'stock' life and its boring lol. The custom ROM features and better performance are what makes it worth it in my view. 4.3 will be even better as work is continually being done on it, and it hasn't been out that long. Also, I think we need to give appreciation to the devs for giving us options as far as what we can run on this phone compared to being stuck with only one choice.
CM is getting good. Recently the "display freezing" issue got fixed, also more fixes for cardock audio and wifi. It simply takes a while to get it all done properly (with that what's left is SIM I/O and HDR (works with Moto X camera application)).
@netizenmt: Booting to recovery is not affected by the ROM you have installed, so you screwed up the installation at some point.

Would you offer a build for a Bluetooth phone user that has the SD swap working?
One that might quiet this thread?

There are a few tricks to getting 4.3 installed and running but it will never happen if u just quite and go back to stock before u get it up and running correctly. I had a terrible time getting 4.3 to boot, keyboard forcing close, stability etc but I figured all that out and wouldn't think of going back to stock. The amount and way if partions the internal drive alone will keep me from ever going back to stock.

You actually just made my whole point.
While it's cool you had time, patience, skill and effort to resolve your issues with 4.3, that's not the point of this thread. So do I. The point is, if you think you're going to slap one of these ROMs on and everything is going to work like stock, forget it. If that's what someone expects, they should stick to stock.
