So a friend of mine told me to get SnapChat so we could find something fun to do when we're bored. Well I don't know why, but the camera just stays still, I went back to stock and it works without any problems, on roms with at least ICS or higher, the camera preview works for a second, then freezes, it works for another second when I click the screen to focus the image, but then it freezes again, I can also take the pictures, but I don't know what I'm taking until it shows me the picture that was took. The app works and does as described, but the preview is just halting. The normal camera works just fine. At first it was MIUI Australia, I'm on PACman right now with the latest JB kernel.
Same thing with me. But front is fine

The camera has stopped working randomly. The only thing I could think of that might of caused it would be the phone some how shut down when it was in my pocket. When I start up the camera app it immediately closes. When I attempt to use Google goggles, it says cannot connect to camera. What can I do?
First off you can give us some more details as to what software you are running. Are you on a stock Sprint ROM? A custom ROM? Did you install any software and then notice this change? Does this happen 100% of the time?
I'm running the stock 2.2 rooted odexed rom. Stock kernel. And haven't installed any new software to cause this...
I've cleared cache, dalvik cache, camera app's cache and it still doesn't work...
No one has any idea? Has this ever happened to anyone else?
It happens to me on both ava stock 2.2 and now netarchys 2.2... I have to wipe everything to get it back for a few hours... it just did it to me again do you have netarchys fps fix?

This is the craziest thing ever. The camera has returned to working after 10 hours of not working. I didn't do anything to get it to return. I will be continuing to monitor the camera to see if it happens again... This is the first time it has ever happen and the first time I've been on a 2.2 Rom for a significant amount of time.
This just barely happened to my phone too! Grrrr!!!
I'm running Fresh.02 + I tried flashing several kernels to see if it would fix it but none of them helped.
kernels I tried, latest versions of: kingX, snap, netarchy
Will try to do a full wipe and flash the stock 2.2 rooted w/o any fancy mods. <--- ok this fixed it!
Does installing the 3D Gallery app cause the Sense camera app to randomly stop working?
I'm getting the same problem again on a different ROM.
UPDATE: I've uninstalled 3D Gallery & cleared data on the Camera app and it still doesn't work.
i am having this same problem. have flashed several roms with no fix. cannot pin point when this happened either. really frustrating. ive done reboots, wipe, you name it.
happened to me

Yes it happened to me, but i have HTC EVO 3D i used leedriod rom and it happend exactly i changed rom to ics and still didnt work know i will call htc and ask them how to get the official ics rom after that if camera wont work i will tell them that the camera was working before i made this update and they must fix it for free
Hi guys
Any luck with this problem? I'm using a rooted xperia neo running [email protected] #2 with an unlocked boot loader - I've used Google goggles many times before and then today its coming up with "Cannot connect to camera. You may need to restart your device" and yet the camera is working because behind this pop up I can see the image that the camera is seeing. I've tried to take a screen shot of this but the screen shot uses the camera and therefore I blanks out the image through the back lens.
I've also uninstalled the app and reinstalled it - cleared all Dalvik cache - as well as moved it to SD and made it a system app - none of these trials have made any difference.

Are you sure there are no problems or known bugs with the rom you are using? Have you tried reflashing your rom? (it might be a pain to do, but something in the rom might have broke and it can help to start fresh).
I never post here but I have had a problem with my phone's camera that I fix by some random thread I found a while ago so I thought I would share what helped me. The thread stated it is something to do with the camera's connection to the phone and sometimes with drops or bumps of the phone it becomes loose. All I had to do was turn the phone face down, put my thumb over the camera and press down with some force. Not enough to break it but just to reseat the connection. After that, restart the phone. I have done this a few times and it has been successful ever time. I hope you guys have the same success.

That is correct, in some cases i have found the camera has come unseated. but it could also be the board.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but when camera is set to MMS, upon hitting record, it instantly freezes.
In the mean time back on official 7.1 (nightly) . Also is there a fix for the rotated video playback (besides holding phone sideways to record?)
Other info, green lens,
Used 2nd init method (thought that was mandatory but did not see it in latest CM7 instructions) on top of CEE froyo. Have tried every nightly since August...both branches.
Thanks in advance for your patience

Yes cleared data with no luck...
Ideas?

Latest nightly (1021) for whatever reason does not have this issue anymore (sweet!)
Thanks!

......aaaaaaand it's back.
Wish I knew what was causing this, when I set video to MMS and hit the record button, it starts then stops immediately afterward.
Cleared data from app even rebooted phone with no luck. Obviously this isn't happening to everyone, so....
Any ideas?

Since you're having green lens camera. Perhaps you need the green mod patch on top of your cm7. Mine red lens, so this is just a suggestion.

While it's possible, I think my problem may be elsewhere; I cleared cache and dalvik, and reinstalled the previous version (which worked before) and am still having the same problem. camcorder instantly stops while in MMS mode. Don't know about the other modes, I just want to be able to text videos of the kids to the family so to speak

Ok so apparently this is a hit or miss thing with my defy...I've just went back to 1.5 and it's working again....color me baffled but I'll take it.

I'm having the exact same problem.
Photos work fine.
If i try to film, i press start, it starts and stops immediatly, and the output file in sdcard/dcim/camera is tiny and unreadable.
I've tried clearing camera cache -> same problem, but i do get the very first frame taken. Second count continues, but still an unreadable file a no preview. Nothing

Have you changed libstagefright.so to fix a blackscreen in order to play GTA III? If yes then you must put the original file back. I discovered it today, and it fixed it

My Defy is also having green lens but i am not facing any problem while recording!!!
That post was from October last year... problem has been resolved with later versions
Don't remember if there was anything else I did though.
Haven't tried gta 3 btw

I haven't seen anything about this, but my rear camera occasionally goes entirely black. At first I thought it was a problem with the 4.3 roms, but it's started happening even with TW Roms. At first I attributed it to having the Nottach framework on there, but that has been removed and I still have my camera black. Front camera works just fine. I may have to go back to stock and see if it is broken to see if it's a physical issue with the phone, but I thought I'd ask and see if this was well-known first.
Edit: If I put the camera in "Panorama" mode, the camera activates, but it is all out-of-focus. I'm thinking this means it's a software issue. Using Wicked v4 ROM.

I'm stock never rooted and my vamera blacks out sometimes where closing tye camera app doesnt do anything so I have to restart my phone to get it right again. I would like to know if this is a common thing or if there is something wrong with mine as well

In case anyone else is having this problem, I eventually solved it. I flashed Infamous then Wicked v5.1 - camera was still black on both of these. Opened Google Edition Camera photosphere and started taking the pictures and that fixed it somehow. Not sure what the hell was the problem, but it hasn't been an issue since then.
My girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S III has been producing photos with random lines through the saved photos constantly. It originally did this most noticibly when the battery was critically low but now it does it all the time. I then thought it might be an issue with CM10, but I just updated it (clean) to 10.2 stable release and it still does it.
Curiously, some other third party camera apps don't do this, but actually right now I just checked and it is happening in all apps. The live preview from all cameras looks fine. It's the SAVED photos that are screwed up. I tried setting the camera app to Internal vs. SD Card to make sure it wasn't a bad SD card but that didn't change anything. Turns out it happens EVERY time with the flash on but sometimes with the flash off.
My mom has my old GSIII and hers does THE SAME THING on very low battery, but not as much as this phone. She is also on CM10.2. I didn't notice it while I used it for 8 months.
Finally, another friend of mine also has a Sprint Galaxy S III and his is not even rooted and still on stock ROM. His does it with full or dead battery and almost all the time too.
Is this a known problem or what? Should I just revert to stock and get it replaced? I will probably nandroid and switch to stock to see if it does it there.

No one else has ever seen this? I flashed back to stock and it seems to do it LESS but picture quality is still iffy. Any idea why CM10 would do this but stock wouldn't?
Its a cm issue. Happens in low light photos. Has green lines and stuff in the photo correct?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Strange. Is there more info about it anywhere? Like I said a friend of mine has unrooted stock and it does it. And it seems to only do it when flash fires. I figured out if I use touch and then snap the photo works fine. It also does it more or worse on low battery. Battery is not bad.

I haven't paid attention to the battery level when I notice this issue but I have noticed that it doesn't happen on the Touchwiz Camera app. It does happen with Focal (recreated last night) and the stock AOSP app (when I was on CM10/11). I am currently on MOAR 7.0.1 and noticed it on Focal last night. I believe the battery was close to dead and charging. I wonder if its the way the app accesses the flash.

Battery got down to about 39% when I last tested. Saw some faint streaking using Focal. None using stock camera.
Strange guys. It does it less on CM11 with Camera Zoom FX than stock. Always on stock with flash on. At least with Camera Zoom FX, you can put flash on torch mode and it works fine. This isn't so bad since it helps focus better and faster anyway. Blinding though.

Sometimes the camera doesn't work, it says it "can't connect to device" or something like that. I don't know what's going on and I have to reboot to make it work. I'm on stock rom 4.3 and stock kernel, rooted. sorry for my bad english
You probably have been using an app that doesn't release the camera properly. Can you think of an app that you've recently installed that uses the camera?
Mine sometimes does this with Snapchat.

Maybe snapshat doesn't release the camera properly every time. I remember a while back I was developing a camera app, and whenever the app crashed, the camera wasn't released, and the easiest fix was a reboot...
