I think is really possible for samsung to build it, i mean if you want to break it...there's no technology that will prevent it. But i see accidentally brakes to become a thing of the past, samsung has come far with its flexible screens(see CES). I don't see flexible screen going to the 'flexible' part of it and more to the 'endurance' part of it. Just because you can bent the screen 180 degrees doesn't make it practical as of today, but i can see a good use to the plastic glass-looking-flexible-screen(just have to make them scratch resistance). I take one please!

I had heard this a few days back...as mentioned above, a truly "unbreakable" screen is a myth and they are misleading you by referring to it as such. An incredibly resistant screen that can avoid breaking under common everyday sorts of accidents though? This I believe. I've seen a few videos around the net featuring some of their experiments with these bendable screens...and they are rather neat. I can honestly see a "flip-phone" style model coming out in a few years (as odd as it sounds)....basically if they keep everything on the phone, except the screen itself, on hinges as two parts...you can fold the phone flip phone style. Pretty neat to think about. I don't see the GS4 featuring this, OR an "unbreakable screen" (I can see this being more realistic for the GS5)...but I have been surprised before

Actually I saw a video of a sample display that Samsung was working on and the user rolled the screen up and unrolled it and started typing on it, it had a dark rim around it and a few lose wires coming from the corner. I thought it was some graphic trick at the time but it was pretty convincing and it was a little bigger than a Note 2 display by the looks of it, more like a tablet display.

Sony had this tech a while ago. As usual, looks like Samsung will take credit for it, though. I wonder why Sony keeps coming up with things, not protect it or market it, and have someone else take credit for it.

No. Sony had a phone with two screens that folded.

I saw this video too... I think this video was using "some" tricks and was more of a marketing video, but not an actual production item. It would be cool, but we are a long time from seeing that. I think he also stretched it out at some point too, correct?

Nokia has had prototype flexible screens for years.

I wouldn't want to worry about inconsistent touches with the sides of my fingers and palm...
It's a cool concept. Personally, if it's not a Nexus I won't be purchasing it.
Not a fan at all. Looks weird to me. Maybe it's just cause I'm so used to a bezel?
I'd hit it.

This also.
1. It is ugly
2. Interested to see how a case can be put on it.
3. If it ever fell on any corner that screen would be finished.
Why is a dead person holding it?
That should have been the Zoolander phone.
Can we have this on desktop LCDs instead? Three of them would make for a killer Eyefinity / NV Surround gaming setup.
I dunno 'bout bezel-free but I reckon itd look awesome with a very thin bezel....
This would be awesome. I can see this happening easy. The HD TV's Sammy and LG have basically no bazel at all.

That's horribly unattractive, and looks really 'shopped to me. Oh, wait, it is... " For instance, if you take a look at our mock-up above...". Not that it matters, it's still ugly. I think producing a "round" screen with no bezel might be kind of cool. I look at the Gnex and think how sweet it would be if the screen matched the contours of the top and bottom of the phone. Some times I look at the screen and think square peg, round hole.

Odd Phenomenon, faux 3D!

Hey all, I was looking at the Final Countdown widget on my screen with my glasses (I usually wear contacts) and I noticed the numbers seem to come off the screen just a smidge! I looked at it without my glasses and lo and behold, it was as flat as the screen. Lol Why am I seeing this? I have pretty bad astigmatism, so idk if the difference in my lenses cause this little faux 3D effect? Lemme know what you think!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes, I can explain why but it's easier to say that it's an optical illusion because of the way the glasses are compared to the contacts.
Focal points, etc.
I too experience this, I had eye surgery on my left eye but my right eye is perfect vision. Hence I wear contacts as well, tho the right one is so minor I might as well not on that side. When I switch to my glasses, I'll get slightly odd effects, especially at some angles or surfaces.
On a side note, if you see this in your screens, keep in mind it can/will happen elsewhere, like when you're driving with your glasses....

Hahaha, better get out of the oncoming lane then!
Nah, but really, if you have astigmatism, only the actual very center of the glasses lens is truly in focus and some "views" through the lens, if you don't turn your head will be blurry or you may see things that aren't really quite there. You do get used to it over time and tune it out, but if you watch for it, you see it.

Haha It's a good thing I never drive with my glasses! I'm always worried that they'll fall off somehow when I'm driving and, with my vision as bad as it is, I'd be screwed.

Since this thread is sooo not on topic with everything else, mind telling me what brand contacts you wear?
My doc had me switch brands again, hoping these will be more comfortable in the long run.
I went from Purevision Toric monthly to Extreme H2O 54 toric bi weekly.
Purevision was nice, stayed clear and you could sleep in them, but irritated my eyes after 5 hours.
Extreme H2O very comfortable, pricy but collect "gunk" faster, so I end up removing and cleaning them in the afternoons.
Why can't there be a perfect model?

Haven't you ever had a contact fold up in your eye while driving? 100x worse. It happens to me once in a while, and it has almost sent me into the median a couple of times. I don't have glasses anymore, but I can't remember ever having an issue driving with glasses. But, ymmv, I suppose.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I wear glasses and ive noticed this effect.
For example, when looking at titanium backup, some of the entries are red text, and others are gray, white or yellow. The red text seems to stand out in front of the other colors. When i take off my glasses and refocus, the effect go away.
Maybe it has something to do with the coatings they put on the lenses? Ive also noticed when looking at flourescent lights that one edge has a blue halo, the other edge has a yellow halo.

No, not yet, but since I really only need the contact for the one eye, at least I'd still be able to see.
I think it is cool. I wear contacts all the time and never wear my glasses because I feel like I might wake up and my daughter is standing next to the bed and she gets hit because I don't know who she is. Yes my vision is that bad. But I do see the 3D effect that you mention when wearing my glasses. And I also wear acuvue oasis.

T-Mobile Galaxy SIII Review

The Build Quality
Color
Let's start with one of the most prominent complains about the Pebble Blue version... the color of the dedicated home button. To quickly dispel the rumors - it is *not* a different color than the rest of the phone. It is the same exact color, however the reason many people claim it is different or "purple" is because it does not have the glass covering it, so it appears to be a different shade to the untrained eye (the glass adds a slight darkness over the Blue surrounding the face of the device). There is nothing about the color of the phone that is inconsistent. It has a nice, even Blue/Gray metal tone to it, with highlights of purple depending on the light hitting it. Personally I prefer black phones, however I have become accustomed to the Pebble Blue and I can say I definitely prefer it over a white phone. All in all, very happy with the color.
Back plate
I had seen a complaint from someone in the forum that the bottom of the back plate was not completely "flush" on one side. Although it is very minor, I can report a similar finding on mine as well. It doesn't seem to be a defect really, it's just not "perfect" to those of us with phone OCD (which is probably 85% of us on XDA). Overall the back fits well - not something I am worried about. Don't care much for the design coming from the GSII and the GSM Gnex, as I was used to the awesome texture and "inset" style of those back plates, however I do find that the material the GSIII is made of seems to stick to my hands somewhat making it less likely to drop pulling it out of my pocket. I have seen some users calling it "slippery" but I would have to respectfully disagree here. I find it adheres to my hand more than any phone I have ever owned, possibly due to the coating they used on it (that may be why they coated it the way they did). Most of us will probably throw a case on this phone anyway, so it may not even be relevant for most.
"Bezel"
The "bezel" around the glass appears to be made of a different material than the rest of the phone. It looks like it potentially could have problems down the line - almost appears as if it's made with minute cracks, although I believe that is just the look of the material. However, with recent reports of some cracking happening for no apparent reason (though I cannot confirm that the user(s) did not sit on the phone or something similar to cause it) this could potentially be the Achilles Heel of the GSIII. If we see a ton of issues with this, there will be some very unhappy GSIII owners and a slew of returns/replacements. Mine has not exhibited any problems so far, but this is something I will be watching closely. Again, a case is probably going to add some protection here, which is how I intend to stave off any potential problems. One thing that really makes this phone shine is the elimination of the bezel "lip" - your finger slides right over the glass from the side/bottom/top of the phone with no lip in the way, which is a nice change IMO.
Screen
Absolutely amazing. Gorgeous, vibrant HD screen that impressed me more than my GSII did. I do see a small amount of the ink blotting that is all too common with Super AMOLED screens, however it is much more minor than it was on my first GSII and pretty much unnoticeable even watching movies in the dark. The colors literally pop on this bad boy, and the brightness is more than adequate for great viewing in direct sunlight. I've never seen a better screen on a phone, period. I know this is subjective, just my two cents.. couldn't be happier.
The User Experience
Processing Speed
Holy **** Batman. This is the fastest phone I've ever seen in my life, hands down. This thing came flying right out of the box as faster than any over clocked dual-core monstrosity I've ever seen. In addition to the awesome speed I experienced myself, the Quadrant scores were in the high 4800's to low 5100's without any modifications at all. No root, no freezing bloatware, nothing. Handles everything I throw at it without even a hiccup. All while running a Live Wallpaper at 60 fps. Scrollable widgets, scrolling live wallpaper, stuff running in the background, jumping from one app to the next using the home button, nothing slows it down. Nothing. Granted, I am using Apex Launcher instead of TouchWiz but that means TouchWiz is still in the background somewhere since I have not frozen or uninstalled it. Doesn't seem to matter, it runs beautifully. This is true on Wifi or 3G/4G, consistent performance regardless.
Radios
I'm getting the best reception and data speeds on T-Mobile I've ever experienced. In my area, where on a good day I might see 5-6Mbps down, I am routinely getting 11-12Mbs. In my condo where I typically have one to no bars, I have three. Wifi connects like nobody's business, by the time I entered my password it was connected within a second. Literally couldn't even finish reading "obtaining IP address" before it said "connected". And I read very fast. I did notice, however, that the wifi signal strength appears weaker - but did not have any disconnections or problems with it, it just "looked" like I had less signal than on my Gnex & GSII. Still stayed connected, and honestly I probably need a new router because mine is crap anyway.
So far, this is all I have to write about today, I've only had the phone for about 20 hours, I will edit this to conclude my review in the next day or two.
Initial impression - get this phone, you will NOT be sorry. Best phone on the market hands down IMO
back with more later, thanks!

Hi!
I had a chance to look at the pebble blue version of the Samsung Galaxy three phone in a T-Mobile store recently and noticed that when I used the google search engine to look up something, the white background surrounding the websites that loaded up on that page showed some blue tint. Has anyone seen this on their phone?
Also, I noticed that the pebble blue version that I saw in the store had alot of fingerprints. Does that bother anyone, who has this color? Thanks!

Well first, as mentioned before by others, the fluidity. The phone is so fast and smooth. I can't find anything to slow it down yet. Multitasking works flawlessly, which was a huge gripe with the One X. The design is much nicer in my opinion, but I did used to think the One X was nicer before I ever saw the S3. Call quality is much, much clearer on the S3 on both a speaker and regular call. The speaker is louder, which is nice when watching videos or listening to music. Also, I always found the One X to be slightly uncomfortable to hold, but the S3 I've had no complaints about, it's quite nice.
These are just my two cents, no fanboyism whatsoever.

S III Durability

Hi folks
I'm considering getting the S III but am not sure about the screen durability as i've heard a lot of mixed reviews. How durable is it? Looking at some break tests on youtube suggests that the screen is a lot more sensitive as compared to other phone. Is that true?
btw, what is a good case for this device ?
Thanks!

I dunno if this counts, but I keep dropping mine and the only damage so far is a little scratching on the corner of the outer plastic bezel when I dropped it once pretty hard on some rough tar. I haven't seen any other blemishes on the case, and so far no scratching at all on the glass. I loved my Nexus One, but the glass on that scratched pretty easy just sitting in my pocket. Not so with the SIII, no scratches at all on the glass in the 3 mo I've had the phone.
I don't have a case for it.

Similar experience...phone dropped from my pocket while sitting, landed on the corner, cracked screen...probably hit the weak spot on the phone, regardless, shouldn't break that easily IMO..
It is not durable at all compared to my previous phones (gs2, hd2) if you drop it there will be serious cosmetic damage. The plastic is extremely soft.

Get an Otter Box, you pay that much for a phone then spend an extra 50 bucks to keep it safe.
Get a case if your gonna pick up the GS3... its a beautiful phone but you need to make sure you can protect it... I dropped my phone 4 times since I got it and thank God I bought a case for it. If I didn't have one, then my screen would have been shattered already

yea that's why i'm hesitant in buying it (3 actually). The issue seems widespread and if it is a case of bigger screen then it is a serious design flaw or maybe a manufacturing flaw. At this point im probably going to put off buying this phone but let's see if things change

I feel like the S II was way more durable. But that's why I bought insurance for this phone. Never had insurance on any other device. And the fact that I have an extended battery and there really aren't any good cases for extended batteries made me get the insurance.

It's a phone and it uses glass, it doesn't matter what phone it is if your looking at Youtube and their hitting it with a hammer or dragging a razor over the screen then it's gonna do as expected. It's almost comical that people do these tests considering you spend money on the phone you should be responsible for it and take care of it. Accidents happen and the carriers know this so instead take care of your property, it doesn't matter who made it or what some moron with a hammer says.
all that is fine but generally speaking one does expect some level of durability for a device that costs upwards of $700 dollars, specially if the company is touting the latest and greatest gorilla glass 2 as one of the main features of the phone. Cellphones break when dropped, everyone should know that. But the amount of complaints i've come across regarding the S III and the different ways the screen is getting damaged is quite abnormal to say the least.
Anyway, i'm still debating whether i should pass on this phone or go for it. Anything new coming up in the coming weeks?

You never hear the whole story either when people give these reviews, "I had it in my pocket and the screen cracked" turns into I was drunk and fell down the stairs.
I still have all of my devices in perfect shape and it all comes down to how well someone takes care of their things. If your gonna carry the phone in your pocket with your car keys then its gonna happen, I see it all the time and like you said at $700.00 you should act like it's worth it. You want an honest opinion on the device? It's worth every penny but the one thing that would make me warm and fuzzy about it is if HTC built the body. It still feels solid but theres nothing like a well built frame like you would find on the One S or X. No other device comes close to the functionality and multitasking that this one does and I own 8 myself (different devices not all cells.)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
yup the One X is really nice too. Too bad t-mobile doesn't carry it.
I'm going to call t-mobile again and see if i could get a better deal on the S iii's than what they offered me ($179 per phone)

Verizon/Toro Custom white housing (automotive quality)

I posted this in the other white housing thread, but that one is predominantly filled with GSM housing talk. If a mod finds this redundant, then by all means lock this one up. If not, enjoy everyone
For all my Verizon/Toro buddies out there in pain from a lack of a white housing... lookie lookie
Tada! It's painted with automotive paint from a local body shop. My friend's the manager so he helped me out a bit with this one, although I had to do all the prep work (dis/assembly, sanding, sticker application, etc.). It is painted with the Pearl White paint found on the Lexus IS350 and various pearl white toyota models. All the paint used are bumper spec (in other words, a flex additive was added to allow some flexibility in the paint, as opposed to something used to paint metal body panels), and everything was sealed in with a layer of clear coat.
The battery door isn't done yet, but should be done tomorrow. Shall update appropriately as time allows.
Edit: I'll try to get better pics when the sun comes out (if ever...). These indoor/gloomy pics don't do it justice at all!
Edit 2: All done, check it out! That's a chrome Samsung logo that's sealed in with the clear coat btw
The last pic is trying to demonstrate the pearlescent effect btw

It's probably about $30 worth of materials... and I mean JUST materials.
If you want to do this on your own, you will need some VERY fine grit sand paper, disassembly tools, VERY good quality paint with clear coat, the Sammy sticker (from Germany), a paint booth with automotive grade oven, spray gun, a certified automotive painter, and way too much time on your hands.
The painting process used is what auto body shops refer to as "3-stage" paint. This is basically pearlescent paint, which requires multiple methods to acquire the "chameleon" effect. How you do that is beyond me, but the shop did a damn good job of it.
As for pics, I've updated the OP with the completed phone. It is niiiiiiiiiiice :victory:
And a lot of free time

Matte white would have been sexy as hell....phone still looks good with the pearl white.

Amen to that one. I probably would only do this again if I'm feelin' frisky with my cellular (don't act like you don't understand what I'm saying )
707: I might be able to get a "frosted" finish instead of the high gloss like this one next time around, but I would imagine the matte finishes would attract the dye from jean pockets way too easily. Wish I could've taken nicer pics to demonstrate the nice pearl effect though.

Yeah, I didn't really think about the whole jeans thing. Maybe a matte black, that would be cool as I well, maybe the next time have a lot of free time I'll try something like this.
The pictures aren't that bad, I do like the way yours turned out, but one thing that bothers me is the chrome Samsung logo on the back, it catches my eye and it looks good, but it sorta looks like it just makes the phone look bulkier and heavier.

I actually wanted a smaller Samsung logo, but that was the smallest I could find on eBay (there's only one dude who sells them, he's from Germany). Either way, I just really liked the way it was sealed by the clear coat so smoothly.
BTW, all the original logos (Verizon, Samsung, 4GLTE) that were embossed on the original cover no longer show. There isn't even a hint of a bump where they used to be
Looks kind of cool, but I wonder how long it will hold up. I would think that it would chip really easily. Either way thumbs up for having the nads to do something you like.

Guess I'll never know. I actually sold this phone to another Nexus user (he had his phone "stolen" from him, but I'll leave it at that for his privacy concerns). I felt kinda sad to let this go, because he didn't seem to to realize how special (at least to me) this particular Gnex was. Wasn't even aware that there is no such thing as a white Verizon Gnex except customs.
Oh well, it's gone now and I have some money to bring the gf to Vegas :victory:
