How to upgrade to JB via Kies for stock users having trouble- Windows - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Since there are a lot of issues upgrading via Kies here is what I did. Make sure you use the original USB that you got with the phone and that you plug it into a port on the BACK of the computer directly; not into a hub or any other peripheral.
Here is what you should do if the phone is completely stock:
1.) Go to www.samsung.com/us/kies and download Kies for Windows
2.) Install Kies, which will take a little while
3.) Plug original USB into the back of the computer, then into the phone. Non-OEM cables are the cause of a lot of issues. Sometimes non-OEM works, most of the time not.
4.) Wait for your computer to install the phone drivers
5.) Kies should recognize the phone after a little while and prompt you to update.
6.) *OPTIONAL* The update doesn't wipe the phone, but I made a backup anyway.
7.)After you accept to update it will download the file and your phone will go into download mode. At this point my computer had to install a generic USB driver and after that it started flashing the update.
I posted this in the JB thread, but it was buried within minutes so I figure a new thread might help,
Eric

Thanks! Kies worked perfect for me. Mostly stock LH9 rooted w/ 4 mods and TWRP installed. Flash counter was at 4.

lol glad someone got something out of it. There are a lot of people posting about issues flashing so I figured it should have its own thread.

I actually had to do the same thing but I Had to go back and download the drivers for the phone. Even after it did it automatically when I hooked up the phone.

I tried this method a dozen times and failed. Did it through Odin instead and all is well.

[Q] [Help] DK28>EC05

Stuck! For some God forsaken reason, when my phone is in DL mode Odin or any computer that i tried will read the phone. I have tried different drivers thats been posted in this forum along with different settings like turning on/off developer mode before going to DL mode.
So I cant use Odin to update my modem on my phone.... is there a file that i can roll back to the DI18? I use the update.zip from DI18>DK28 and hoping that i can revert that way and go get EC05 through CWM.
This doesn't belong in development, hopefully impaler will be here to move it soon.
We need more info to be able to help, like:
What OS is the computer running?
Do you have the Samsung drivers installed?

and said that it worked for them.
my primary computer is win7 64 and i tried every driver that i can find under the sun and to no avail i fail.
try this

I have the same problem myself.
DK28 is an unsupported build. The update script posted above won't work.
In DK28 USB communication died and as such Odin is not an option. The only option as far as I know is to flash a FULL ROM which has a DI18 modem as part of the ROM using CWM. You will just have to put the file on the SD card manually using a PC since USB is not an option.
After you go to DI18 just follow the regular steps to go from DI18 -> EC05 (may need multiple steps with EB13 intermediate step)
I haven't gotten around to doing this myself yet, still stuck on DK28.

so flash a rom that have a di18 rom and hope for the best?
it seems that i have that i cannot find a rom that is supported with cwr 3.0+ to flash back to di18 =(
There is no reason DK28 should have effected being able to use Odin at all as LiberatorUSA has suggested, as many here running custom roms have more than likely run a version of DK28 at one time, and the only way to update the modem from DK28 is through Odin. And while you can flash a different rom through CWM (such as those based on DI18, EB13, or even EC05), you will still need to use Odin to update the modem. If you really think DK28 is to blame, then you can flash to an EC05 rom (such as SRF 1.1.0, as it supports CWM3) and then try to re-Odin from there.
Here are some basic things to try, as I don't see them listed in what you have done... Have you tried using every usb port on your computer? Are you using the stock usb cable? Have you tried other cables? Completely uninstall all previous drivers before trying to install different drivers. Open your device manager and connect your phone in DL mode, watching to see what devices appear, then manually attempt to uninstall those specific devices.
Download the epic drivers direct from Samsung. The first time connecting may take up to 15 minutes as there are some parts that Windows 7 seems to want to find on the net. After all drivers report installed then put your phone in download mode (hold 1 key while booting on) start Odin then plug your phone in. A COM number should show up on the computer screen. If this doesn't work try another data cable.
Do you BONSAI?
Have u tried different versions of odin?
Different usb ports?
Does the com port pop up?

I have tried it in multiple computers and the odin do recognize the phone untill i go to DL mode, i Dl the drivers directly from samsung and it did took awhile to find the drivers. It recognize the device until i go to DL mode, I have used my samsung cable , my wifes htc evo cable and my mom's droid x cable. All the same result, i spent the whole day trying to figure it out. I had a fresh install of winxp and win7 on two different laptops.
I installed the DK28 through a CWM, i have been having odin problems since day one and not just this time.

[Q] Flash back to stock FROYO EC05 via Samsung Recovery?

On stock GB EI22. Cannot currently use ODIN. More details on that here, for the curious: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375005
Question:
In my current state, is it possible to flash a stock EC05 from the default recovery?
I could then use one of the root methods without ODIN, then get CWM, then flash back to GB using a rooted kernel / custom ROM...
Just flash an EC05 ROM, you are rooted right? Reread it...guess not. No, there is nothing you can flash from stock recovery that will take you back to EC05 from GB.

Give Heimdall a try. It has it's own drivers.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I had tried Heimdall from a Macbook Air as well (in addition to the other 4 computers I mentioned in the reference thread). It did not work. It did not do anything, similiar to Windows.
However, I did manage to get ODIN to work!!! Same setup I've always used, which until this incident, had always worked (same PC, same USB port, same cable, same phone, same person, same room in the house, etc.).
The only thing I did was uninstall the drivers completely, then reinstall, rebooting in between every step.
Afterwards, I opened ODIN, put phone in download mode, and BAM!, like magic, it worked again. 7 seconds later, I had CWM (ACS 5 1.0.0.0) installed!
Now, I am not sure it had anything to do with re-installing the drivers because:
1. I had the phone briefly connect once during the 4-ish day period... I was booted into Android, Windows did the USB connected sound and I saw "Samsung" under USB Devices in Device Manager. Then, when I removed the cable and booted into download mode, nothing...
2. I expected to hear the USB connection sound, regardless if the drivers worked on not. I would then expect to get a message stating "Could not install drivers" or something to that extent. Perhaps my perception is wrong?
3. No other computer, which had the drivers freshly installed, detected the phone, even with the same USB cable I know works.
Anyways, once CWM was in place, rooting took another few seconds. Ti Backup restored and all seems to be well.
Thanks everyone!
Yup. Happened to me too once. Out of the blue my computer would not recognize my phone with usb debugging on. Reinstalled the drivers and it was fine.

It’s the newest version of the ICS based custom ROM with the Galaxy S3 theme and all the detailed instruction are listed in this link: http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s2-epic-4g-touch-ics-custom-rom-galaxy-s3-theme-93959/
I downloaded the newest version 1.8 from this thread link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673662
Everything works fine with the exception of the USB connectivity was lost and the computer will no longer recolonize the phone when attached via USB cable.
I download an app called USB switcher and made sure it’s on the mass storage but still inoperable.
When the USB cable connection is made the computer gives and audible note a will briefly flash a storage device for a second in the Computer – Devices with Removable Storage window then quickly disappears.
I’ve tried going back to the EL29 stock ROM about three times and the USB connection works fine with ICS Android 4.0.3 but doesn’t function at all with the latest ICS based custom ROM with the Galaxy S3 theme?
I'd first try to uninstall any samsung drivers you have on your PC then re-install them. Get em here http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe
Also try a different USB port AND cable.
If that fails I'd grab Mobile Odin from the market and download one of sfhub's one-clicks and install it (he has instructions for flashing from the phone on signature http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869 in his posts.)

Ah I see. probably disregard my last post then.
Use sfhub's autoroot package to enable mass storage http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24010029&postcount=889
That may work.
I tried uninstalling the drivers and reloading them a few times and even tried it on different computer.
I updated the Kernal using the PC based Odin3 v1.85 and flashed the EL26 stock CWM and might just have to try using the mobile version.

I had the same problem with my old et4g. I was running calks ics rom and kept getting the voltage to high notification and i wasnt even charging. And it also was no longer being recognized by the computer. Tried every fix. I went back to calks gb rom and still had the same problem with voltage notification and not being recognized. I tried to mobile odin back to a stock rom and it soft bricked my phone. It will only boot into recovery and i can get no where from there. My 4G signal sucks donkey balls on this FF18 ROM.
I tried just flashing the FG26 modem using this FF18 ROM but it's still a problem.
I'm going back to the FD26 ROM because that had the best 4G signal IMO.

The problem I always had was getting it to connect to the computer cause the USB port is jacked up. I finally jacked with it enough that it connects 1 time out of 5. Used the method u just linked and its back up and running. Hell yea. Thanx. [Q] Kies closes on GB27 update

I'm trying to update my old phone which is now my sister in law's. It's stock unrooted ICS FL24.
When I try to use Kies to update, it gets through the first step of dowlnoading firmware upgrade components, but when it reaches 100% the window hangs for 30 seconds or so and then disappears and Kies closes.
It's the most recent version of Kies, I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it's still doing it. Has anyone come across this and a way to fix it? My sister in law wants the update but I can't seem to do it for her.

Use that link to download an Odin One-Click tool that will make your life easy. Whether you're looking to root her phone or keep it un-rooted, there is a tool for you on that page. Download whichever one of the tools you need whether or not you need to root her phone or keep it un-rooted. RESTORE versions will WIPE all user data from the phone. NODATA versions will NOT wipe user data from the phone. After downloading the one-click tool you need, simply turn off her phone and once it's fully powered down, press and hold volume down and the power key at the same time until you see the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo. You can let go now. It will boot into something called "Download mode" and that's what we need.
I'm going to assume you've already installed the samsung drivers since you're using KIES. If not, get them from here and install.
Make sure the phone is FULLY CHARGED at this point.
After the drivers are installed, launch the Odin One-Click program and wait for it to appear. Once it's loaded go ahead and connect your phone to the computer. Make sure your phone is still in download mode before you connect to the computer! The top left box in that Odin window should light up with a yellow box with "0:COM#" in it, once that's lighted up, go ahead and click start at the bottom.
If you do not see a yellow "0:COM#" light up in the top left set of boxes, you may need to run the ODIN One-Click as an administrator.
DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE AND DO NOT TURN IT OFF WHILE ODIN IS WORKING! Once it's done, it will change the bigger box on the left of the "0:COM#" to a green box with the word "PASS!" in it. Once this happens, the phone will reboot on its own. Once the phone reboots, it's safe to disconnect from the computer.
And that's it. You've skipped trying to use the crappy KIES software and you've successfully installed GB27 (JB 4.1.2)! I'd say it's time to celebrate!
Hope this helps you. Cheers!
(alternatively you could just follow the instructions from the page where you download your ODIN tool from... Thanks to "Admin" from that website for the post, garwynn from here for leading me there, and QBKing77 for instructions that taught me how to do this back when ICS just released for this phone. )

No. Use a NODATA rooted FL24, install Titanium (PRO highly recommended), and backup all your apps, call log, sms inbox, etc.
Then put the Titanium Backup folder from your SDcard on a PC (or somewhere else safe, off the internal storage. External SD card is ok too).
Then run the RESTORE ROOTED GB27, which will repartition your internal storage, likely wiping everything. This is why you moved your backups. Install Titanium and restore your backup. Reboot.
Then reboot to recovery and do a nandroid backup. Copy this backup to your PC for futureproofing.
Now, if you want to be unrooted, you can Odin a NODATA UNROOTED GB27, and you should have all your apps and such intact, without root access.

[Q] UPDATED**** (SOLVED)No Data...and no USB to PC...now what? :(

UPDATED**** 1-23-2014
The USB issue was due to the port malfunctioning. I ordered a replacement part via Ebay for about 7 bucks and fixed it. Now I have PC access. As far as in updating the firmware...after 12 failed attempts via AT&T I just manually did it via Odin and now it is updated. Thanks for everyone trying to help me out. Hated it was a hardware issue and not just a tech/Soft problem :/
The past week I have noticed my Note 2 charging slower than normal. Sometimes randomly disconnecting and connecting when plugged into the ac adaptor. I figured it could have been the cable or the adaptor itself...so I replaced it. It seemed to work...but then it was acting buggy again. Then...lastnight I noticed when I was wanting to transfer a few file from my laptop to the phone...it would charge the phone but would not allow it to connect to the file system at all. I scoured the net for solutions and tried just about everything I could find...as well as the more simpler options as try a different cable...but nothing worked. I also tried it on 2 other laptops...no luck.
My phone was rooted...but never used a custom rom and so I decided to just unroot and do a clean slate in case there was something that borked. Everything went smooth...but now, after doing the unroot and factory reset...the usb still charges...but no connection at all. I went through all the settings and set them as they should and nada. On top of that while I do have my phone service...I have no data at all. I have called att and they were no help. Samsung passed me off to android customer service and they were no help. So now what can I do?
Problems:
-No mobile data available
-No USB to PC file transfer ability (kies air works...but not usb to pc)
-I also cannot update past 4.1.1. The updater says I can check again in 24 hours....lol
Ok...so I fixed one issue already. Found a solution to the mobile data network issue. It would appear that due to the factory reset...it lost all of the APN info for linking with at&t. I found how to restore it here: http://forums.att.com/t5/Android-Di...-Phone-APN-Settings/td-p/3467513#.Ustjil8e-Co
To fix the USB connection to your computer
You need to connect USB. Then, in dialer, dial *#7284#
Go to Qualcomm settings
Select MTP+ADB
Done."

Tried that...before I unrooted and even after unrooting. Still doesn't work
Try installing Samsung Kies on your computer and updating your drivers.
Or try a different cord it might be a bad cord.

Have you tried putting the phone into download mode amd see if it will read your phone that way?

I have done both...even tried 3 other cords...one of which is my extra/spare Samsung galaxy note 2 cable. no luck with any as well as the Kies route

Didn't think about trying that. I just attempted though and no luck either
This is irritating because ever since I unrooted and restored to original fw the usb charge works perfectly fine...no longer cutting in and out like it used too. But just cannot connect to the PC via USB for file transfers. Kies works fine doing that...but USB is no long an option
Have you tried uninstalling the old USB drivers for it then reinstalling them?

Yes...no luck
So I did a factory reset again just in case...still the same issues. USB will charge...but no connect. Kies and PC will not see it. Only kies air works. On top of that I have now attempted to update the firmware via at&t through settings and it fails EVERY time. It downloads 100% and after reboot and goes into at&t installation it always fails at 24 or 25%. 5 times in a row...for 5 days is ridiculous. Any more ideas?
At this stage I wish I could re-root it and then flash the original stock rom again to make sure that it didn't bork the first time. But I cant I'm assuming because I need to be able to connect via USB. Am I wrong? Am I wasting my time?

Since USB is charging. Can you check under device manager, what name it is showing for your device? May be you are missing drivers therefore your phone is not recognized by PC.

It doesn't show anything. The only thing that stops the phone charging when I disable or uninstall is what is labeled Renesas electronics USB 3.o root hub and host controller. 2 separate items. BUT...its not plugged into a 3.0 port anyway...even though in the past it has worked fine...for over a year no less. I have uninstalled that item...as well as uninstall the Samsung drivers before...rebooted while phone is NOT plugged in...re-installed the Samsung drivers...then plugged the phone back in and it still doesn't work. Still charges...and the item comes back...but no usb to pc file exploring capabilities. Same for other computers too. Have tried another computer as well...one that my phone has never plugged into. It charges...but no connectivity. The computers just don't even see it for some reason.
Is there a way I can root the phone without USB to pc support? I'm hoping to try and update it once rooted with ODIN.
You don't need root access to flash a stock rom. I was having usb-charging issues, and a return to stock 4.1.1 cured the issue. I replaced the USB board but that didn't fix it. So, stock would be my advice.
You could put the stock package on your SD card using an adaptor and your PC. But I don't know if you have a custom recovery.

My only thing is I have no usb to pc file sharing capabilities unless I use Kies Air. Otherwise I cannot. I have tried now 8 times so far to update the phone and I cannot. It downloads fine...but upon rebooting to install it fails everytime at 24 to 25%. All I want to do is update the phone. It is a simple as that.
Take your SD card out of your phone.
Put it in an adapter.
Put that in a PC with an SD card slot.
Copy the stock ROM to the SD card.
Remove the SD card from the PC and adaptor, then insert it in your phone.
Boot into recovery and flash the ROM.

When you say boot into recovery...are you talking about where I load rom from sd card...adb or something like that? And...can I do this for 4.3? I have 4.1.1 already. I was trying to update to 4.1.2 to see if it will fix the usb issue as well as the updating issue. But if I just had the 4.1.2 and flashed it would that do the same thing as updating?
