[Q]laggy phone after runing an app for a while - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So i am using trinity's stable kernel on 1.2 ondemand gov and deadline i/o sched. My question is: why am I havving terrible performance for example after playing like 10-15 mins subway surfers? It works really nice until i get like 600.000 points, after that I barely can see what's happening, verry low fps especially when i'm touching the screen(might this be i/o related?). So,does anyone have the same issues? Can someone tell me the optimal kernel/freq/gov and i/o sched? And btw i'm on cna 3.8.0 if that's helping with anything.

CNA 3.8.0 is based on android 4.1.2 and there are many stable trinity kernels for 4.1.2. Each with different clock speed for CPU and GPU. So which one are you using? Try another one with higher GPU. There is one with 1420MHz CPU and 512MHz GPU so give it a try if you are not already using it

I'm using the 1420 Mhz CPU and 384 Mhz GPU because of the battery drain in the 512Mhz GPU one. I already have issues with my battery drain cause my phone is thinking that it's charging and my screen is turned on almost non stop so...

What about trying the 512 GPU for a little while just to confirm whether the performance still drops after 600,000 or it will be fine???
Accordingly, I hope we will be able to narrow the cause of this lag
Hope you reach a higher score this time

I'll do this tomorrow at work and i will post the results, now i need some sleep

try a 1344mhz kernel or a 1536mhz trinity kernel. for some reason many devices dont like 1420mhz.

Actually I play the same game nowadays but never reached this 600,000+ score. Generally I noticed that the game is not as smooth as it used to be before the last update with christmas theme. Only yesterday I checked the settings and there is an option to turn this new christmas theme (called Holiday Theme) off. I don't think that the power in GNex is not enough to run this game, but maybe this new theme is having some bugs causing this lag. So try turning it off and see if you still face the same lag you are talking about

Ok so I noticed that not only when I'm playing Subway surfers the phone is lagging but when I'm in the drawer or just switching between the screens...I'm on franco's r300 kernel with 384Mhz GPU. So,what' wrong with my phone?

I don't think there is anything wrong with your phone. It is not very weird to get lags from time to time while using the phone, so please make it easier on yourself
My advice is to try different ROMs and kernels until you are satisfied

Any sugestions for something nice ?

I can't help you in ROMs because I didn't try any but using my own AOSP one. As for kernels, I always used Trinity and it is very fine with me.
Just search around for other users' experiences and mostly you will find something attractive to your liking

smartass governor - is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works - by taking over the idle loop - is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the "old" minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 352Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 352 - why?! - it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 528/176 kernel, it will sleep at 352/176. No need for sleep profiles any more!
i googled it lol, seems like its a bit more responsive then interactive, and it ramps down quickly too. could give some battery savings
What ROM's will this work with?
keeps cpu at/above 768mhz, will not go below until you switch off smartass gov.
liking the "sleep" enhancement, but seems like it should let the processor scale on down to 245 when idle with screen on
I'm running this with CM7 Nightly #16 and it's running really well. I'm getting a little more battery consumption than I do with zinx's kernel, but that could just be because I've only been using the kernel for around 2-3 hours. It may need a little more time to settle? I'm not sure, but it is definitely snappier! If it does scale down the cpu during screen off, you can't tell at all! It doesn't have any lag when unlocking like setting profiles usually does. So I'm really stoked about this kernel! Great work as always Dumfuq! This will be my new kernel for at least a few days to give it more of a chance.
PS: I'm only getting around 29 on linpack at 1.017 GHz, where as with zinx's I was getting 38's. Smartbench scores are at 1320's for productivity and 1869 for gaming. So those both beat out zinx's kernel. Just wanted to put those out there so people have some kind of a comparison point.
posted a v2. The difference is frequencies are changed to match glacier frequencies instead of hero's.
The only noticable difference here is that when the screen is off the frequency scales between 245 and 368 instead of being stuck at 245.

Trying to decide if I want to flash this over the stock cm7 kernel.
Has anyone noticed any gains from doing this? what about compared with the stock cm7 kernel + setCPU?
flashed this over build 16, cm7. I still use setcpu. no problems, everything is smooth like butter. Definitely smoother than it was before. no wake up problems, no play back problems. thanks for this =]

You could always flash it and find out, and if not, just restore the backup you made prior to flashing it. ;] I don't see why it wouldn't it hasn't broken anything for me.
K ill try it out later when I get home from work. Thanks
whats the mhz setting on this by default? not super fond of setcpu. though i do like this idea of a custom throttle and logic. so i figured if the mhz is high enough then i'll give it a shot.

I don't overclock mine past 1.4. My play actually reboots if I go 1.6 or more.
I Overclocked my phone to 1.5 and it worked fine. Then tried overclock to 1.6 ,and it's really working good! no bugs ,very fast and the battery stays cool.
I'll stay with my 1.6Ghz overclock ,I think it's enough

I'm on SmartassV2.
I once asked this same question ot DoomLord, maker of DoomKernel about which governor and IO to use for best gaming and all around performance.
His recommendation (whihc I have been using since and saw a noticable difference) was to use
Governor: Performance
I/O: BFQ
and I overclock mine to 1.2ghz. My first android phone i oc'd too much, heard a popping noise and BAM.....bu-bye. So I dont go too far..
I generally step up the speed one step at a time until I hit errors that cannot be explained or I get force quits because the phone is running too fast. I suggest going slowly and testing things out but using the governor Performance while the phone is changing. Right now I'm doing okay with smartass v2 at .60/ 1.5 ghz. I might try bumping it up to 1.6 ghz and see how that works tomorrow.

Hey guys ive already overclocked my phone using the lubus gb kernelv12 and i gota say having the extra internal memory (EXTRA 400MB!!!) and the ability to overclock to 1.6ghz is nice, however there are some things i wana ask. Im running at a min 249 and a max of 1613 mhz using no frills cpu with smartassv2 as my governer and noob as be scheduler, it runs miracles in speed, everything i can run at high resolutions and play and top speeds. However i leave my phone like this all the time ( 249mhz 1613 mhz). The smartassv2 governer is ment to only use high cpus when needed, so that in theory means that i wont always be at 1.6ghz. Ive read on other forums keeping your phone overclocked all the time is bad and dangerous but is it really if the max cpu is only being used when needed? In otherwords should i leave it how it is or is it dangerous? My device is an xperia plat btw. :victory:

AFAIK only the Performance gov keeps the phone at the max allowed clock speed (1.6GHz in your case), so it's just fine as it is. You could, however, use an app (the only one I know that does this is SetCPU, there might be others) to make profiles so it'll only be overclocked when playing games/running benchmarks et cetera. This might save you some battery life.
CPU master by antutu allows you to set profiles but you need to buy the pro to do it

What is best Rom and kernel combination focus on heating and battery life?

Hello everyone.
I am looking for a relative best rom and kernel combination for daily use which focus on heating and battery life.
I’ve tried AOKP38 with franco185 and did't change the setting of CPU model. The temperature raised to almost 50 degree. I only open the instrgram and twitter for 10min.
I also tried the slim4.0. The heating is much better than B38 with franco. But battery life seems not good.
Wound you mind recommending the best rom and kernel combination you have ever used?
Thanks! Sorry for my bad English.
I too will like to know. I will be watching this thread very closely.
After browsing through many threads where talk regarding heating issues take place, I'd say underclocking are undervolting are your best bet.
If you don't play any 3D games or do anything that requires some real juice from your CPU, I'd say you'd be fine with underclocking to like 1036 MHz and maybe do some slight undervolting.
If you only want do to the underclocking part, and if you got heating issues with Franco, then try Morfic's trinity kernel.

185 seems to have quite a few problems (see Franco's thread). I jumped ship onto the 181 kernel - wireless tethering (encrypted) works, the GPU is fast enough, and it doesn't seem to overheat. I don't use the kernel for benchmarking (although..... ) but rather, to improve the GPU performance.
And I'm on stock ICS, not AOKP.

I've been underclocked to 1036MHz for a while now and I've never had and problems running any games. NOVA 3 and similar games runs great. The only issues I've had are when I get a call or SMS. Then my phone starts to lag, but eventually picks itself back up.
Every device is different. What works great for someone probably won't work great for you. You have to try them all to see what suites your phone the best.
There are already many threads discussing this, please use an already established thread instead of creating a new one.

Overheating

I've OC 1,8 GHz... I know that when playing games, phone's temperature raises, but when I'm playing NFS HP it almost burns me. What can I do with that? Does custom ROM may reduce the overheating?
And which ROM is the best?
reduce your overclock to 1.4ghz...really no need to go above 1.4ghz currently
yeah, but with 1,8 GHz is the best score in Antutu...
So in the end its just about benchmark score..

I'm running the Titanium Kernel build#4 and occasionally take it up to 1.7GHz; the handset does get extremely hot (battery temps were somewhere in the range of 50C-60C, I think) so I never OC that high anymore. It probably cant be very good for it
As for "best" ROMs, it really does depend on what you prefer, but flashing the Titanium Kernel and running the Lionheart governor seems to give the best performance and battery life at a 1.4GHz OC, for me anyways.

That is true. The CPU can withstand ~100°C but not your hand. Standard phones has plastick fascia, so you are not sensing the heat that much as in our aluminium V. The phone can withstand that much, the question is how long...
As for me, I use the phone at stock 1Ghz, and for me it is more than enough.

[FIX][UPDATE] Wild Blood Full Effects v1.0.7 Performance + GameLoft games - Root

The initial Wild Blood 1.0.7 had full effects and it ran bad on Tegra 3 devices (especially the slower ones like the Nexus 7)
Gameloft quickly botched the game with the v1.0.8 update and downgraded most effects to make it run well on Most Tegra 3 device
check this post for screenshots comparison and how to return your game to v1.0.7
Interestingly the game runs well on stock 2.17 kernel with gaming boost, yet it runs very bad on the One X gaming optimized kernels like Faux, Tegrastats revealed it's using only one core, without gaming boost it rarely crossed 50% load and with boost it rarely crosses 82% load, in other words this game is not using the Tegra 3 CPU at all
Not only it doesn't even begin to use the CPU, Gameloft still fails to optimize their games for the Tegra 3 GPU shortcomings for example Wildblood has an high level of Anisotropic filtering and our GPU is pixel fill rate bound, a reduction to this filtering could have been enough to relief the GPU instead of killing off all the effects
The very best way to play wildblood v1.0.7 is using the One X base 2.17 stock with gaming boost 2.1 or even better with the custom gaming enhanced stock 2.17 kernel
For some very specific reason it runs perfectly playable on this kernel even with full effects as long as you use gaming boost
However if you like to force this game to run well on custom kernels like faux and franco, continue with the following methods
Since this game and many Gameloft games don't uses Tegra 3 cores, we will want the maximum out of our single core
How to Run Wildblood and many Gameloft games at the maximum possible performance on custom One X kernels
First Method: Dual Core lock
- Download the latest Renovate Gaming boost
- Download any CPU control app like SetCPU
- First Enable boost in the gaming boost app, this will set the maximum background free memory and tweak the GPU
- Then change the CPU Governor to Performance mode using your CPU app, this will lock Tegra 3 to dual core mode at maximum clock speed, since two cores are disabled for safety in this governor you don't have to worry about overheating
Run Wildblood 1.0.7, you will notice it runs at least 2 to 3x the performance of default values
Recommended custom kernel for this method is Faux 11 mainline but also works with stock kernel, make sure you don't use an OC kernel since this method will push the device and you don't want it to overheat
OCed kernel might have issues with this method
Don't use this method and game on the charger otherwise your device might overheat
This tips is for non Tegra optimized games, using it with the THD games will surely cause high heat
Once you are done gaming disable boost mode and restore your CPU governor to ondemand to conserve your battery
Alternative method: Quad Core + Throttle lock
This is a much more aggressive method and will heat the device
for some reason the game runs in full quad core on the userspace governor using faux 12b1 and it runs over 30fps with full effects v1.0.7
we also need an OC kernel like faux' variant free this is because we don't want it to throttle all the way down to 1200MHz which always cause a massive drop in speed, I think its related to linked memory speed, so faux variant free or ultra or beta, will throttle to 1350
I didn't try any other kernel like stock but Franco doesn't have userspace and ondemand is only single core on this game, the stock kernel has userspace but I didn't try
so using faux 12b1 enable gaming boost 2.1
using setcpu or ur fav CPU app switch to userpace gov and Noop scheduler
set the min and max clock to 1400, this will lock to the throttle speed of 1350mhz at full quad
run the game and be surprised
u can reduce the lock a little if u feel its too hot, but don't set min below 900 because this governor has a mind if its own
In theory this should also work on stock kernel but it will lock to throttle speed of 1200mhz at full quad
Don't use this method and game on the charger otherwise your device might overheat
This tips is for non Tegra optimized games, using it with the THD games will surely cause high heat
Once you are done gaming disable boost mode and restore your CPU governor to ondemand to conserve your battery
This is cool to use on stock kernels?
Nice tip thanks hammy! XD
Any other CPU tuners worth mentioning? I'm skint atm and cant afford to pay for it XD

yes tons of free CPU apps just search in google store, system tuner is one of them
AND YES it works on stock kernel, although it beyond me why you insist on not trying a custom kernel like faux (2 to 3x the frame rate in Beach buggy)

TBH I can't seem to ever get round to flashing a custom kernel, also I'm still not 100% confident enough to do it. I'm not sure on which kernel to flash tbh and I'll be jumping up to ARHD 11.1 soon so don't see the point until after then.
I haven't played beach buggy yet.
Nice tip, thanks a lot!
This method is working perfectly for Faux 11 mainline and the device remains so cool
Hamdir,
It's possible to get full effects whit v1.0.8?
What for?
This update addresses performance problems experienced by some users on Tegra 3 devices (including Nexus 7).
The update is NOT required for non-Tegra devices.

They've changed only graphics, this update does not contain any bug fixes.

+1, updated to 1.0.8 since it went live - would be great if this can be done on this current version.:fingers-crossed:

Both version is same, just for 1.0.8 version, they've decreased the graphic.. so hamdir just giving us how to revert back to 1.0.7 that hold full graphic enable for those have update to 1.0.8. So, this is the way to make it full effect enable.
@nashshafrulrezza im also getting freezes with the game, Faux11 mainline it's but not the kernel because i press home and i can exit the game, so i think there is something wrong with TB back of v1.0.7
extremely fun and smooth though , this method proves the real problem is that Gameloft is not using the CPU well
@everyone else v1.0.8 made the game smooth by killing effects so you don't really need this method, its only for those who want to play it with full effects enabled on v1.0.7

Guess you out of luck too hamdir. Have you try it with franco? I'm not in mood to change kernel today, so hoping for others to report it.

no im sure it's the games fault, i remembered it also happened pre 1.0.8 update while i can play beach buggy with this method and it gets very hot but rock stable
plus didn't you hear? faux 11 mainline is now glued to my one X until JB source is released, me and my One X are exhausted
hold on, i just remembered i have UV50, so next time i play ill try with out UV
anyway i don't think its the kernel fault, if the kernel the entire device would freeze and not just the game

It just the same.. already try it without uv and it really working great at 1st.. then when it comes to lot monster stage.. the game hang as before.
Agree.. it's the game could be.. just need anyone to test it with latest franco.. cause before this, franco kernel working better when it comes to wildblood.. Maybe we'll found out an answer to this freeze problem.
BTW, I don't want to glued my HOX yet.. Still hoping for better gaming experienced. Not because gaming experienced is bad with our HOX but I'm just hoping gaming will last longer with our HOX, maybe same as iphone.

will last with all the focus Tegra is getting and not even a word about Tegra 4 so far
why dont u try Franco for us
but correct me if im wrong, when you had franco and no trouble before, you were using your own v1.0.8 and not my 1.0.7 TB
I did the tweaks: Enable Boost and Performance Mode
Beach Buggy Blitz is much smoother at full resolution. But the device still gets overheated I can blame either the chip in 'my' One x or like other people said the jb builds heat up while gaming.
I remember when playing beach buggy blitz normally without tweaks, the lag in the tunnel/dark areas was the most. With these tweaks the lag is barely there
Thanks Hamdir!

While it works great, this tip is not intended for Beach buggy ill make it clear in the first post
beach buggy and other real Tegra games uses the CPU core and GPU pretty well and they get heated as they are with gaming boost
unlike wildblood which is barely pushing the GPU or the CPU, with this tip it remains very cool
so yea this tip is for wildblood 1.0.7 and maybe other non Tegra optimized games like the ones from GL
the JB kernel is confirmed by many as hotter (so far) if they didnt' fix this, our kernel gods will deal with it, of course this means waiting for the kernel source, once the OTA roles out ill be annoying HTC with requests about the kernel source on Elevate
This is why im now happy that my devices has Asian OTA and will gladly update later when the gaming situation is clear
Alright. Thanks once again.
