Hey, i'm getting a note 2, should be here tomorrow (yay!) I have a question about playback that maybe someone who has one could answer, i did some googling but sadly found nothing. How is the playback when your playing 720p and 1080p .mkv? Can the stock player do it? and if it can't how is it on 3rd party players? Does it jump or stutter at all? Thanks
I use MXPlayer for almost everything
MXplayer is the way to go!
The Note II is the first Android device I've owned where I've felt no need to use anything other than the stock player (and I've had many, going back to the G1).

For the most part the stock player will play well, but some 1080p videos it will play choppy a bit. MXPlayer plays them ssmmmoottthhhh!

Hello, currently I am using the Galaxy S II (1.5ghz Qualcomm S3 version). It almost play 720p MKV videos with RockPlayer, but not quite, since the audio lags behind the video.
Can someone give RockPlayer a try with some hd MKV files on their Nexus and see if it can handle them? Low bitrates will manage, but I'm looking at 720p and 1080p MKV videos at 2000kbps or more.
I am interested in waiting for the American version of the Galaxy Note, but it will also use the Qualcomm S3 chip, which means even though it has a larger screen, it won't play be playing my videos. If the Nexus can manage these videos, I rather get it instead.
There are some legal hd videos such as big buck bunny, which can be converted from MP4 to MKV.
(PS. Yes I want to watch HD videos on my cellphone screen.)
I am the same way. I play 720P .mkv on my phone. i currently have the Rezound(the Nexus is not available in the US yet). When i was using the Thunderbolt, it would play these files, but unless i overclocked the phone it would play out-of-sync(but even then, it would still be slightly out-of-sync).
On the Rezound, 99% of the time the files play just fine(no sync issues). I found that the best player to use is 'Dice Player', followed by MX Video Player.
I did say "99%", and yeah.. for some reason, on rare occasions a video will start to slip out-of-sync, and when it does it's with MX Video Player.. but if do it through Dice Player it plays fine.
I will say though that having 'Sense' on this phone isn't exactly a big plus when it comes to try to getting the best performance out of it. Luckily, the Nexus doesn't have Sense.
I have done a few BluRay rips to 1280x720 (native nexus) and they play on the Galaxy Nexus perfectly using build in player. Much, much better than they ever did on my 10.1 tablet. No issues at all.
The scene I use for test is the bit in Inception where the tables explode in the cafe, this really makes some struggle. No prob on the nexus, very impressed.

MX Player seemed to have more options on when to use hardware decoding than QQ Player has in that video. You could have hardware video decoding while also running software audio decoding.
Trying to find the best MKV Player for Android, paid or free, doesn't matter. I am currently using MX Player but the volume is pretty low even using Volume+

I second this as Dice Player played a 4 gb mkv pretty well on my phone. You can always download the trial first as well.

yeah when i was on my Rezound i found that both Dice & MX were the best(& only 2 at the time that could handle 720P).
oddly though, i can't seem to get 720P (ac3) .mkv files to play on my Nexus with any app... well, if i'm lucky, MX will decide to randomly pick one and play it in 'software mode'... but refuses to play in hardware mode period.
i hope there's a fix for this soon.

Tron works in 720p with all modes, but smooth in hardware. Looks PHENOMENAL.
I’ve been searching for a tool that can do that job. Although there are lots of MKV converters in the market, which one to choose is a big headache, because most of these programs have problems one or another like video, audio out of sync, quality loss… Well, Brorsoft Video Converter is a powerful MKV to MP4 converter which can fast convert MKV to MP4 with high quality.

if the videos can run without lag, i'll consider to buy this phone.
if it's lagging, perhaps i should consider buying galaxy note because their price is similar..

I havent had any problems playing 720p films on the nexus. 1080p i havent tried.

I'm using MX player. (work great 4.0.3) and I using aokp build #19, kernel is frenco kernel #13.
tested 720p/60fps -> smoothly.. really 60fps!! (video is H264/[email protected], sound is AAC/320Kbps. total average bitrate is 8000Kbps.) format is mp4.
tested 1080p/29.97fps -> smoothly. (but it is youtube 1080P, H.264 [email protected] I'm not test H.264 [email protected]) bitrate is 10.0Mbps. format is mp4.
but I'm tested in 4.0.2 roms, not smoothly.. Especially, 720p/60fps is too slow. (video rag)
Anyway, I'm recommend MX player + 4.0.3 roms!
I have used dice player and seems to play everything great for the most part.
There is one thing though that sort of bothers me and I can't figure out if it is a codec issue but certain videos with certain scenes that are in a dark gray/black, it will play on the device as blocky. The quality looks horrible when it does that.
I went to play the same video on my fascinate and looked perfect.
I did some research and it seems the Samsung Note has a similar issue, so not sure if it is codec related or not.
Just something to keep in mind.

I play 1080p mkv all the time, have to use mx player though. runs like a dream, although I am also rooted AOKP milestone 2, franco 13, never tried with a 4.0.2 or stock.

Yesterday , just got Galaxy Nexus by selling my Iphone 4s and thx for replying my previous question about gpu ,
Now , I wanna look at how galaxy nexus plays videos , I googled hd videos and download Nasa videos from Nasa , its 720p wmv , and my device didnt support this format and I downloaded 3rd party application which is called Mx video player and it opened the video but it didnt play , so I'm kinda disappointed ,
I also tried Vevo and imdb and the quailty of videos werent good , So any suggestions or recommendations for watching video on galaxy nexus ?
what application am i supposed to install ?

Dice player and MX video player. my all time favourite while on AOSP roms.
i usually converted any video first though but it played pretty much everything without converting. i converted just to have a 1280 x 720 resolution.
I use MX Player. Great app. Can't fault it.

I too use MX Player on my GN and haven't had a problem playing any format of video, wmv included.
I prefer the BS Player with the Codec Pack, seems a little bit smoother than Dice Player for me.
MX probably the best for me now. No problem with it so far.

MX Video Player is definitely my favorite as well. I do find that switching from HW decoding to SW Fast decoding works better a lot of the time for me.
If MX Video Player doesn't play my MKV files, then I try Rock Player. And if that doesn't work, then I just have to convert the file.
Dice Player to play mkv for me (haven't tried wmv), its hardware decoding runs smoothly with not too much heat coming from the phone.
MX Player's hardware decoding seems to be not working properly where it lags more than software decoding. But I have a lot of rmvb's and MX Player runs great with those.

Therollingstone, there are two parts to your question that need attention.
Firstly you say that MX Player didn't play, the reason is that you didn't download the additional files needed to be installed to play the files - You need the ARM v7 Player Codec in addition to MX Video Player app - http://goo.gl/suhcr
Now VEVO and IMDB's disappointing video quality is not the fault of the stock player - It's VEVO and IMDB's fault. They are laying video files at a much smaller resolution (most often to cater to their iPhone customers who have much smaller screens and resolutions 960x640). Galaxy Nexus has a 720P HD Display so it scales up any video you're trying to play at a resolution of 1280x720. This is the reason you might be seeing a slight drop in video quality from these application or any other videos on the web that are streaming videos at a much lower resolution.

I just filmed a 4k video with my Note 3 (snapdragon version), and was trying to play it on my Note 10.1, thinking maybe it'd look better on the higher-res screen... Turned out Note 10.1 couldn't play it with native video player, nor could dice player or mx player play it with hw mode, and in sw mode it is very laggy.
So maybe Exynos 5420 cannot handle the 4k video (encoding and decoding) after all? Can someone with the snapdragon version of Note 10.1 try and see if they can play 4k video natively?
I dont have any 4k videos of my own, but all the ones i've played thru BS player (HW Mode) and Youtube worked fine.
And this is on the Exynos 5420 version...
In fact here's me updating this post running a 4k video on half the screen, unstoppable.

strange... I just took a 4k video with Note 3 again, and again Note 10.1 can't play it.
Can I ask what firmware you are on with your Note 10.1?
The latest MK1... Maybe there is a problem with how its encoded?
Have you tried BS Player? Thats my new go to player and there is a free version i believe.
And it works with multi manager as well! No hacking!!!

I just flashed MK1, still no dice... and I also downloaded bs player, can only play it in sw mode, not too laggy but it is there...
I didn't change anything in my Note3 camera setting, so the codec should be stock, which is h264 MPEG4 AVC1. The 4k video's got a crazy high bitrate that's for sure.

I haven't had a chance to play much 4K video but the one I tried played fine on both BS player (using hardware mode) and Archos Video player (with the free codec pack) on my note 2014
Same here I cant play my 4k videos from my note 3. I hear audio but it says video codec not supported so I assume 3rd party video player might be able to.

Well, I have tried dice player, mx player and bs player, but none of them can play the note 3 4k video in hw mode, and sw mode playback is laggy to various degrees.

Just got home with my 2nd note and tried playing any YouTube videos and none of them will play correctly.
I also noticed that the tracking on the spen is bad as well on this one.
Everything play's fine on my g2, my son's iPad air and my wife's note 3.
Think it might be time to give up on Samsung products for awhile.
