[Q] Unrooting issues - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, last week, my old droid died in it's sleep. I'm currently unemployed and a friend was kind enough to give me his old Incredible. He has it rooted with CyanogenMod, and I have been trying to activate it on PagePlus. I have not been able to OTA activate it as is, and I've read it's because of the non-stock mod flashed on. I've been scouring these and similar forums for the past week, going through solution after solution to no avail. It's become a time-sensitive issue.
What I have done so far:
Downloaded the s-on and pb31img.zip: The s-on thing flashed properly, but when I try to flash the PB31IMG.zip, it just says installation aborted. I've tried downloading the zip file from multiple sources, in case it was an issue with the file. I've tried flashing Jellybean just to see if there was an issue with flashing any other roms at all and it worked fine.
Downloaded, installed, and updated HTC Sync and the correct RUU to go with my baseband. I can not for the life of me get either of these programs to recognize my phone while it's plugged in, despite the phone and computer separately recognizing each other and being able to interact normally otherwise. I believe this to be a driver issue, and I can not find the appropriate driver. All inquires to the correct one have guided me towards getting the SDK package, downloading the driver from there and installing it. I did this. When I attempt to search for drivers in the designated folder, it tells me that it can't be installed correctly. I have tried this from two computers with Windows 7 to the same effect.
I would appreciate any help on this asap, as I am waiting on several employment-related calls and have reached my wit's end on finding a solution on my own.

Did you tried to flash stock rom?
May be this helps

Yes, I did. It did not work. That, from my understanding, is what I was attempting to do with the PB31IMG.zip.

I appreciate the quick search, but I have done those things to the letter multiple times and described doing them as such, as well as the issues I encountered.

Reflash soff and then just flash touch of blue and you can activate on page+ from there and if you want cm back just flash cm7 and the gapps because a factory wipe in recovery won't make you reactivate

Thread moved. Please post in the correct sections of the forum, all questions belong here in Q&A, unfortunately ticking the "Is this a question" box doesn't automatically put it in here.
Thanks

I would get s-off back, as it will not affect activating. Then either do this ruu http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot, or as stated earlier reroot and flash the stock 4.08.605.15 rom or Touch of blue. If the ruu dosent work, try reformating your sdcard fat32 and then try again.

Page Plus doesn't care a hoot if you've got a stock ROM, CyanogenMod, are rooted, or any of that stuff. And they certainly can't tell if you are s-off or s-on. I have had zero issued doing OTA programming on my Dinc regardless of the many ROMs I've had on it. I've always just dialed *22890 to activate and *22891 to update the PRL. Granted, I haven't changed my phone number or deactivated in quite a while...
But yeah, like others said, get s-off back if you at all can. If you flash Touch of Blue or another stock-based ROM, you will have more access to manually programming it that you can get with CyanogenMod.

[Q] Problems flashing custom roms

I've got a fully rooted, fully NAND unlocked evo4g and I've been having a lot of trouble flashing custom roms.
Right now I'm trying to flash Cyanogen 6.0.0 and i'm getting the following error (check the attachment for a pic of the error).
I've googled the problem and all I could draw from my research was that I needed to download a new PCM132.IMG.
Tried that, and I still get the same error message.
What am I doing wrong?
Any help is appreciated...
Cyanogen roms need the .76 bootloader.
This site has the right one you need:

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try that right now and let you know how it goes.
Now I seem to be having a whole new slew of problems...
I followed the instructions, finished it, then went to check if I had the 0.76 bootloader.
Nope, still running 0.93. So i figured I would try reinstalling the drivers using the USBDeview.exe that he said to use.
But, when I unplug and plug my phone back in, no drivers install. I'm assuming I'm going to have to do it manually, but where can I find the drivers for my EVO?
The second problem is that I can't go into recovery through bootloader or quick boot.
I'm hoping that's just a problem because the drivers aren't installed, otherwise I'm boned.
Thanks for your help..
Did you go through every single step they had? Or did you just flash the pc36img file?

thats because you must download and flash GAPPS from here
http://mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20100817-signed.zip
and another question. any specific reason you are flashing a cm6 nightly for 7-19? the final release of 6 is out and there are new nightlies.

[Q] Deleted sprint bloatware & now can't update phone... Please help

I deleted several sprint apps a few months ago when I temporarily rooted my EVO with z4 Root. I would now like to update the phone to 3.70. I have tried the OTA and the manual version but after extensive research, I realize that I can't update without these system apps (sprint tv, nascar, football, etc..)
Is there any way I can get these apps back on my phone?... or be able to update to 3.70 without them? I am not permanently rooted, still using z4 root.
Any advice at all, would be greatly appreciated...

Not sure about adding the bloat back but try flashing myns or mikfroyos roms. They r both based off of 3.7 base but without bloat and speed up. Mostly stock looking as well
Thanks for the reply.. I'm not sure I can use custom ROMs with a temporary root, is it possible? What I'm looking for in the new update is permanent SWYPE and the updated speed. This is my last attempt to try to fix the problem... If I don't find a solution, I will have to replace my EVO and pass this one on to my husband. This has been driving me crazy!

I don't know about the temp root but u can always try the full root.
You could permanently root, the ROMs mentioned before have the swype keyboard & are faster than stock.
Or you could download the apk files that you deleted. If you can't find them, you could pull them from a stock rooted ROM. Then, while temporarily rooted, move them to /system/app and set permissions to rw-r--r-- with Root Explorer or a free alternative. They'll be there when you reboot.

Thank you SO MUCH! That sounds perfect... I will try the apk files first, I'm curious to see if that will work. Thank you for the excellent detailed explanation, I actually understood everything and feel like it will be easy (I do have Root Explorer).
If that doesn't solve the problem then I will do a permanent root and use the above custom ROM. When I am finished, I will post my results.
Thanks again for all your help!

If adding the .apk's back doesn't work, and you don't want to root and run custom roms (which you definitely should ), you could always run an RUU. I believe you should be able to run the 3.70 RUU no problem, but if not, run the 3.30 RUU, and that will flash you to a completely stock, out of the box ROM. Then you should be able to run the OTA. To run the RUU, you just need to have HTC Sync installed on your computer, if you don't already. You plug your phone into computer via USB, and run the RUU from the computer. I believe you want to use the HTC Sync that came on your evo's SD card, if you still have it. I believe the most updated one on HTC's website causes issues with RUU. Anyways, good luck, and here's a link.

I would permanently root, you can always unroot later too. Use unrevoked 3.

You can get certain apps by sending a Text message to sprint.
Like, send a text to "7777" with the word "NASCAR" and it should send you a download. It may work for the rest of them too, not sure tho.
I would try a full root myself.. you won't be sorry.

Thank you VERY MUCH! I just can't express the relief I feel. I could not reinstall the sprint .apks. I spent 3 hours trying all different kinds of ways before I finally gave up and moved on to the RUU. If you had not suggested and explained this, I would still be totally stressed. This is my first time to ever post a problem on any forum, I usually just search and read. This was a great experience and everyone was so helpful!
I want to briefly post my steps just in case someone else has the same problem later.
Searched and downloaded Stock RUU 3.29 (this is what I was running prior to deleting apps) and HTC sync 2.0.4 (my understanding that this is the only sync that has the highest success rate with minimal errors)
Uninstalled the latest HTC sync from my computer and then installed the 2.0.4 version I just downloaded.
Made sure USB debugging was enabled on my phone, then connected to PC with USB cable.
Powered off the phone, then while holding the volume down button, I pressed the power button until the screen with the 3 android skateboarders appeared.
I then had the RUU file on my desktop (PC) ready to click. On the phone I scrolled with the volume button to fastboot, then pressed the power button to select. I then quickly double clicked the RUU file on my computer.
When the dialog box came up, I followed the instructions. At one point, it asked to update the rom version. I Selected update and continued until completion.
This worked perfect. My phone was wiped clean and back to the original stock ROM with all sprint bloatware. I then updated my phone to the latest update 3.70.
After this, I now feel comfortable doing a permanent root. That is my plan for tomorrow... I wont be deleting anymore bloatware, just freezing it.

Awesome! I'm glad I was able to help, and that you got your issue resolved. It's always good when your first experience posting in a forum is a positive one, and XDA has a wealth of info and great people around here. Good luck on rooting, I'm sure you'll have no trouble. Then you'll really get to see what your Evo can do!

Well I'm glad you got it working, but deleting the bloatware clears up space, and if you delete it from titanium backup, you should have no problems, just make sure to make a backup before you flash your first rom. And like K2buckley said, there's always good people lurking around.
If anything do NOT delete the sprint Apps just freeze them using TB... Read that on a newbs guide

please help with root issue (searched for 2 days & tried everything)

yes i have searched endlessly.
no i am not in anyway new to rooting (not claiming to be on the level of probably most here)
i have tried everything to get my replacement DInc to root. one confusing issue is that the error i get seems to bounce around all over the place. from back CID missing, to failed to gain root, to failed to flash recovery and is your firmware too new. i have tried:
* multiple versions of unrevoked.
* with and without sd card
* on charge only and on disk drive
* with and without firewalls enabled.
* did factory resets
* flashed a new RUU
i am almost sure i am forgetting something here but cant think offhand as i am about to go crazy with this thing. please if you have any suggestions then i will try anything. i know it may sound childish but if i cant root this thing after being used to it then i almost assume go back to my old razor.
thanks in advance
Sure you have the correct drivers (for windows machines)? Sometimes people have had to use different computers, couldn't hurt if you have access to another machine.

Try setting up the drivers from scratch for you new device. The same drivers worked when I rooted my buddies phone, but I had to re-download them from scratch to get it to work.

already tried this. actually i just installed windows 7 ultimate on my laptop just a few days ago so it was completely clean. did everything from square one with no changes in issues. i called verizon today and told them that the replacement device i received was doing alot a odd things (no mention of real issue obviously) so without hesitation he said he would send me another out. so hopefully there is just something about this particular device that is abnormal. i would still like to keep hearing opinions and trying solutions tho. who knows that something in the refurbish methods arent causing this currently. thanks to all.
anymore guesses.
I had problems using Unrevoked on windows. I put it on my Mac, and it worked the first time, no drivers or anything needed. Probably not the most helpful advice, but if you have access to a Mac, might as well give it a try.
Uninstall dropbox and PDA net if present. SD is fat32? Using stock USB for device? Launching unrevoked as admin? Right click on the exploit before running, see if properties show it from unknown computer, and unblock it if needed. Same story with the drivers, check and unblock from properties, then reinstall as admin.
Tried a different USB port on the PC?

wanted to post back the outcome which hopefully at some point will help someone. i made sure every possible combination of drivers, programs, menu options enabled/disabled appropriately. nothing fixed this. verizon sent me a new device out (obviously they werent told my reasoning), powered it up, plugged it into the same computer and 2 minutes later was rooted with not the first issue. thus i have concluded that there had to be something in the programming that would not accept root. unsure how considering i even ran the RUU multiple times. thankfully they sent me a replacement for my replacement cause dealing with a stock phone after being rooted just would not work out.
thanks all
Yea if that phone was having that much trouble getting root then it probably could have bricked in the long run. Good thing you did get a replacement and were able to root in the end.

Replacement EVO has the OTA...

compliments of the local repair center.
Needless to say, I'm not rooted. What's my options?
Unfortunately for you, you have to wait until a root method is available for the newest firmware. Or find someone with an evo that hasn't taken the ota update, and doesn't care about rooting and trade phones
Vinchenzop, I don't mean to steal someone's thread with this question but it looks like you answered his question with what might just be the answer to mine so I'll ask it here. I think (I know) I did something very stupid yesterday after I uploaded to 2.3.3 on my rooted phone. I did it from here, not the official update and when I was done I know I was still rooted because I restored everything with Titanium backup. Well, seems Titanium on the auto backup didn't back everything up every night like I set and some of the backups missed data or some programs just weren't there so I did a restore of my programs from My Backup Pro. Something in there must've unrooted me because now when I open Titanium it says, after the request for approval to use it pops up, Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.
When I open Wireless tether it says it's been granted superuser permission but then says unable to start tethering, is your devise rooted?
Help please.
If you have s-off in bootloader you're still rooted. Try going to recovery and flashing this superuser fix/reboot and your permissions should work again.

dirkyd3rk, I just noticed my response and it was for anyone else having the problem that I had. I just wanted to say the response was meant to say that I downloaded the file you mentioned above which eventually is the reason I was able to get back my root. I just needed the one more step I listed above about going back into recovery after doing your instructions and that is when I saw the option to "Reset Permissions" which I never saw before your fix and that did the final trick. Thank you so much again.
p.s. I had to delete your link above because I do not have enough posts but all those who might need it can see it in your original response to me.

No problem man either way you're back in business that's all that matters lol.
Ok, posting in this thread bc its the closest subject to what i have going on.
I got my evo replaced last night for antenna issues. Old one had Fresh on it, and i want it back.
I am using the same memory card as was in my old evo
current phone has 2.2 build 3.70.651.1
this thread says there isnt a way to root with latest OTA. But the read first thread under Q&A says that my build is supported.
So i followed the instructions under xHausx guide and im getting stuck.
When i run my autoroot.bat file as administrator it opens up dos prompt and says
'res\ini.cmd' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
ERROR Cannot load init file! Make sure you extract everything out of the zip!
I downloaded the autoroot 2.5 file through the mirror linked on the guide and extracted it. I have HTC sync 2.0.35. (i know there is a new version 3.0 available but as it just came out yesterday i am assuming that the version is not needed for this method)
Debugging is checked
Phone was in charging mode
Any thoughts?
Im trying not to get discouraged. This is what happens when you let someone else root it the first time and dont pay attention.
I think i posted almost all details that i could think of.

Your phone luckily wasn't updated to the 2.3 OTA, so you can still root it. I have no experience with the Autoroot method, so unfortunately I cannot help you there. I can recommend using unrevoked instead to root your phone.
You'll need to uninstall HTC Sync, and download the modified drivers from the unrevoked site & install them. Download the latest version (I believe it's called reflashpackage.exe once it downloaded). Everything else you should already have covered - debugging on, charge only, etc. There are video walkthroughs of unrevoked on YouTube, if that helps you.
Once you've installed the drivers, plugged the phone in, and started unrevoked, it should only take about five minutes or so. The phone will reboot a couple of times, wait for it to say "done", then you're rooted. Unrevoked installs ClockworkMod, if you'd rather use Amon Ra you can get it from Rom Manager or from xda.
I'm sure that Autoroot is a great program, I just don't have experience with it. I've rooted with unrevoked once, and it was the easiest process I've seen for fully rooting/nand unlock.
Good luck!
...oh, and don't restore any nandroid backups from your old phone. User apps backed up with Titanium are fine, but nandroid backups are a baaaad idea.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Uninstall HTC sync would be my first thought...then start again with just the usb drivers.
Thanks, gonna try that method now. What better way to spend an evening right???
LOL
Ok.
Followed the instructions on Unrevoked.
Downloaded unrevoked 3.
installed drivers.
restarted phone,
opened unrevoked 3.
Program ran, then kicked off error “Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"
Looked up a few forums that says boot to bootloader and clear storage.
While doing this i noticed it says S-Off now.
Cleared storage, rebooted and ran unrevoked. It went through its little speal and rebooted the phone a few times.
now unrevoked says "done" However, i still have stock HTC Sense.

Ok, so i found a thread that suggested downloading root checker.
it says i have root access.
So if im thinking correctly i just need to install a rom that i like?

Ya...depending on what was imaged in the process, you will probably have a stock rom installed afterwards. I've done two EVO's (004) in the last day using this:
http://www.multiupload.com/HSWSV16NU0
when you are done..your will have a stock rooted sense.
But it sounds like you got through everything well, so no need to redo anything..happy flashing?
I still haven't got my replacement, apparently EVOs are backordered. I told the Sprint store to NOT update it to gingerbread. Told them I use Netflix too often and to leave it alone They said no problem.

I did notice when I picked the one up for my son yesterday at Best Buy, they were updated the two customers before me. Did the same thing...just took the box without him even opening it and did my own thing.
After 2 replacements in a week on mine..today the third one came in and had the same solar flare in the middle of the screen. The guy at the sprint store was now a little more sympathetic and went and got a new 004 out of the back and let me do the activation myself...whew..no update done on that one either!

It's normal to have stock HTC Sense after you root (at least with unrevoked). Do you have Superuser in your app list?

Tho my antenna is now going in and out a lot (which it didnt before the root, thats why i got the old one replaced due to it going in and out)
and 3g is SUPER slow.
Any ideas?

[Q] Can't get phone to re-root, please help

Previously I had installed on my phone (I believe, but could be mistaken) a Twilight Kernel and Hurricane v1.6 Rom. Well, I had nothing but problems with the rom, and put up with them for some time, just because I didn't have time to go through and find a rom I liked and flash it. I decided to do just that yesterday.
Apparently my mind broke and I did something wrong (probably numerous things). I had first attempted to put the shiney new CWM9 with Shadow Kernel on, rather, I made the mistake of trying to just put the Shadow Kernel on after having done a full (triple) wipe on my phone. I got the boot loop for the kernel since there was no rom (duh) loaded. Okay, no problem, I'll toss a rom on the SD and boot into CW3 and flash it? Yeah, not so much. I got a short "Samsung" logo boot loop and could not get into CW3 after that.
So, I Odin'd it back to EL30, thinking I'll just start from fresh, right?
Wrong.
Next in the series of mistakes I made, I forgot that I had already downloaded and installed the Samsung drivers (don't ask, my brain was apparently on leave yesterday) and attempted to re-install them. They did not like this and would not progress and I had to End Process the install from Task Manager. I then uninstalled the drivers completely fearing that I may have corrupted them by trying to re-install and then EP'ing them.
I then re-installed them, or so I thought. Plug phone in and start again with One Click Root. Fail. The script couldn't find my device.
Hours of searching and trying different things later, script still couldn't find my device, though I now have both the phone recognizing there is a USB connection, and the computer has stopped yelling at me that there are no drivers (I believe it finally gave up and installed the Windows drivers for it). But still can't get it rooted or do anything but stock stuff.
So..
1:Samsung drivers won't install, running Windows 7-64 Ultimate; error at end of install just states: "The MMS InstallWizard was not successfully installed SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones v1.3.450.0."
2hone previously recognized USB Debug mode, but no longer. Will only Recognize standard USB connection, and with the connection made to PC, the script will not recognize the device.
3:adb for all intensive purposes does not appear to be loading..per the message from the script "Root was not obtained after 60 seconds. Make sure the phone is connected and that adb is working. If adb shell isn't root, reboot the phone and try the script again." I've rebooted numerous times, but I'm pretty certain that since it's not going into Debug, it's just not being recognized.
I have even tried Gingerbreak with no luck, just continuously sits on the rooting screen, but never proceeds (upwards 45 minutes I let it go).
Please please please please help me fix all the mistakes I did and get this thing working again and get the damned drivers installed proper.
(Baseband-S: D700.0.55.EL30, Kernel version 2.6.35.7, Build number: Gingerbread.EL30)
Note* I am happy with any root/kernel/rom at this point, I don't care, I just want the damned thing rooted again.
And of course after I finally cave and post for help, I find the thread where it clearly states OneClick Root no longer works for Gingerbread...so we'll add that into the mistakes I made...
Question still stands, how do I get this rooted again?
Qbking77 youtube him...
Or I could do it for you remotely via teamviewer... either way

If you are up and running EL30 just Google How to Root Samsung Epic on EL30 and a qbking77 youtube video will pop up and all the links are there as well for the files you need. If you are not up and running then you need to go into the Roll Up sticky thread in Development and click on How to Restore a semi-bricked Samsung Epic....all links are there for that including 64bit drivers.

Found it all, getting it working now. Thanks all. We'll chalk this up to ...noobi-ness....(ignoring that I've been rooted and doing this for a year now... >.> )

Sounds more like serious root rust to me. Gotta keep up...lol. Samsung tries to make it harder to root...that works for 5 minutes around here...LOL.
