[Q] How imporant is backuping up your IMEI - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

How imporant is it? ive been flashing roms back and forth aosp and touchwiz jb and i havent lost my imei should i back it up and if its actully necessary can someone kinda dumb it down a little so i could understand easily
Thank you!!

I would say.. if you can then you should back it up. Reason being.. it seems to be a lot easier than going through the process of putting it back onto your phone when it's missing. That being said, I have done the same thing and have not lost my imei. At the same time, I also know that there's a way to get it back so I do not worry about it. But, you could go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997and back it up. to me, it's only as important as you see fit. meaning.. if you think it's more work to fix it after it's gone then back it up now. if not then dont worry about it.

It's like insurance, you only miss it when you need it. It costs nothing to do it and is obnoxiously easy to do so.

I backed mine up right after rooting before I started flashing roms. It only took a few minutes and I've had to restore it once since then, and it was very easy. Back it up and keep it in a couple of places. I have a copy on my laptop and on a usb stick.
Look here for info on backing up and restoring...

Thanks for responding were you as well on aokp 4.1.2 and on ktoonsez kernel while backing it up? do i just download the software and say backup easy as that?
Thank you!
Edit: downloaded software now i need to know how to get on diag mode do i just copy and paste it to a script runner on my phone??

Yes, when I lost it I was on AOKP. Instead of messing with dialog mode to get into the hidden menu, I restored a nandroid of stock that I made right after I rooted. If you have a stock backup, back up your current rom, restore your stock backup and do it that way if you're not comfortable with the dialog. You can then restore your current backup after you get your imei backed up or restored. Hopefully someone can help you out if you don't have a stock backup because I'm not familiar with the other way. Just read through the thread and look for the info you need.

First thing I did after rooting, restored imei twice now. There are a couple or roms that eat imei's and gps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

all went well except that im not sure if i backed up right because the picture isnt a phone and the backups name by default was 00000000_0 cqn i finished at 100 percent and im able to find the backup in the bin folder but i just wanna know if i did it right. can any one confirm i have a screenshot as well
Thank you!

Crap, can this be done?

Just got this phone and I love it but the seller on ebay had it rooted and had one of the roms from here on it. They said they would put it all back to stock for me. I like to start with a clean slate if you know what I mean. Well, it is back on gingerbread but root is still there and a whole bunch of other stuff (apps, roms, titanium backup) etc etc in folders on the internal storage. My question is can I safely get this phone back to being stock just like it was from the factory, without the risk of bricking it? I know how to use Odin for the Epic 4G and all. I knew there were some problems with the touch and some phones getting bricked. I have no clue what they may have done to the phone so I am a bit concerned to do anything to it till I hear from someone who has done this (gone completely back to stock) Also, is there a tutorial somewhere?? Thanks guys for your help with this.
Oh here is some more info if it helps looks like I am on Android version 2.3.6, EL29, kernel 2.6.35.7 there is some other info if you need it please let me know I do see a Caulklin's folder in there in the internal storage so most likely they did have that rom on there at one time. There is also a ACS folder in there but when I try to open any of the folders in there I get an error that there is no program that can perform this action. Grrrrrr
Hi.
When messing with Gingerbread, especially stock, bricks are pretty hard to come by nowadays.
Here is what I suggest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
(from what you said, you probably understand this already)
Just run the EL29 OC. You'll be good to go.
In terms of the internal storage, just delete it all or run a format. You won't get yourself in trouble that way, it's just the internal storage.
If you're concerned about the data wipe brick, that is only on ICS. So since you're on GB, it is not a problem (and totally unrelated to clearing internal storage.)
Post back if you have any questions or anythin'.
If you are on gingerbread then there is no danger of the EEMC superbug(As far as I've heard/read). As for reseting I don't have a link to a tutorial off the top of my head, however the process is pretty simple. Start searching through the development forums for the stock odin files and then flash them. I can try to find you a tutorial/links tonight but I don't really have time right now...besides the search function works the same way for you as it would for me! Feel free to ask if you need anything else!
Hahaha MochaCharok beat me to it!
Thanks guys. The phone at one time was on an ICS rom and yes I can search for it. I just wanted to make sure before I did, that this could be done. So, I will see about finding the tutorial and how to go about getting the phone all back to factory like. I know I am so anal this way, but I really do like to start with a clean slate before I do anything to any phone. thanks again guys I will holler if I run into any problems. LOVE this phone though.

When you activated the phone on your account it should've wiped everything they had on the phone prior and reset it to stock. At least that's what happened when I activated a phone I'd bought from an XDA member. So I started with a clean slate automatically.
It didn't for whatever reason. I had to go in and edit the MIN and MDN manually to get it to activate so maybe that is why. That thing was a HUGE pain to do too. It would not take and kept resetting. Had to try it like 5 times.

If you are stuck with what to do next then take it to a Sprint store and let them wipe it for you.
Good info
As I'm going to try this and hopefully get the missus off her Opt S and onto an E4GT this week this was good timing to cover the process.
Here's what I am planning to do:
1) Flash EL29 + Root
2) Factory Reset from Recovery (which should clear NVRAM if I understand correctly)
3) Call MVNO and have them set up phone
4) Allow hands-free activation to hopefully fill in the blanks
If this works as I hope then I shouldn't have to tinker manually with the NVRAM data.... if not then I have my phone to base most of that off of. And of course it depends if the carrier will let me set the phone up - in the past they haven't been warm to using a different phone unless you purchased it directly from them.
All this just to sit tight until we can get the GS3 probably next year.. yeesh.

[Q] d2tmo - android kitchen help

Hey Guys,
I've dug around and can't find anything concrete so I'm going to post here. I found the kitchen and decided to use it instead of having to manually zipalign and deodex my apk files. However, when I go to modify my already modified rom(created via nandroid) using the kitchen no matter what I do(zipalign/deodex/boot anim) I always wind up with a bootable / working rom that does not have an IMEI.
Rolling back to a rom created via clockwork works fine.
What am I missing here?
Seems to me that your imei my be wiped. You may need to nvflash restore your imei. That's if you were aware enough to have backed it up. Search on here and you'll find a thread on backup/restore on imei's.
I'm just sayin!

[Q] [q] soft brick -- a little help plz?

So I was got my s3 awhile back and rooted it and ran Clean bean without any problems, well after those annoying system update messages started to get to me I decided I wanted to try and new rom and update my phone a bit as I would be leaving the country and wanted my phone updated. So I decided to flash slimbeam , It went off without a hitch. Only problem was I could not figure out how to get Titanium backup to restore all my contacts and app data. I saved all the backup files on my computer and even after putting them in the Titanium backup directory it would not let me do it. Anyway.....I decided to try and use the titanium backup program that lets you extract the data from a nandroid backup and flash it in recovery. I forgot to put it on my internal card when doing so and when I did my wipe I deleted it (epic facepalm) so I have to reflash cleanbean go back into my phone and make the .zip file to flash...
So I got tired and went to bed before flashing anything else, when I wake up. My phone is stuck on the samsung boot image screen. I try starting only to get the same thing. So I boot to CWS recovery and try to restore one of my nandroid backups. I accidentally hit backup to external sd and it started to run a backup, thenn my car charger came unplugged and the phone died....thinking it would just make that specific nandroid corrupt I thought nothing of it. So I reboot to CWS recovery again and actually try to do a restore with my oldest nandroid, But I get the error "Error updating /system" and error updating "/data".....I tried multiple backups that I have, none of them work and all produce that message.. 'm fairly new to this, What Am I doing wrong? I really love this site and all you guys do and I will be forever greatful of any help you guys can give me. I leave the country for Mexico in 2 days and I cant afford to pay the $150 to get my phone warrantied from sprint!
Thanks in advance, and sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes (at work, not suppose to be on here)

Ok Lucid, stay calm.
First off, never do any work in Recovery without a fully charged phone. You're just asking for trouble if you're relying on the cable being plugged in.
I've never had good luck with trying to restore data in TiBu from a nandroid backup.
I'm not going to go into how to make your backups work. I'm honestly more concerned with just getting your phone back into working order. This thread has the most current Stock Rom in TAR form. Odin instructions can be found in this post within that thread.
After you're back to 100% stock, unrooted, you can follow the rooting guide to gain root back.
THANKS

Do what he said, I can vouch that restoring data through tibu from a nandroid has never worked for me either. If you backed up your contacts with Google you can just export them into a file (either .csv or .xml i forget) and then import that into your contacts

And after looking through the sextape forums thread a bit more, you don't actually have to reroot, just use the following TAR file:
"Restore" Versions - Wipes your user data
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Stock_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

Here is a link to a post where I talked about Tianium Backup and what not to restore. It should be fairly informative.
In TiBu for SMS and call logs hit menu from the main screen and backup data as XML, select save locally when it's done. Move the xml files to external SD if you're gonna flash a 4.2.2 rom, flash new rom move the xmls back to internal, go to tibu, same menu, restore from xml and select which one you want to restore. It'll open a quasi file explorer, locate the corresponding xml for the option you chose(call log, SMS, wifi, bookmarks) and select it. It will restore the data via XML and you'll have all your call logs, sms, bookmarks and wifi accesspoints back like you never left your previous rom.

[q] help with nandroid issues

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot or if I broke some forum rule, I have never posted here but I have read a ton, thanks for all the help you guys have posted by the way.
First off I am not by any means an expert on computers and rooting but I have a decent understanding of the basics and can easily follow online instructions to root. I obviously have a d2att, I recently rooted it. I was happy with it unrooted for nearly a year but when samsung released the 4.3 update my phone really started sucking. Eventually I decided to root just to get a rom that functions better. I have been running gummy rom kit kat, I think its the nightly from march 10th, I have had no real issues other than some random reboots here and there. My mom begged me to root her d2att because she also was tired of the buggy samsung 4.3 update. I eventually rooted hers, even though I really didn't want to, knowing that I would get calls about every little issue and I would have to run and fix it... anyway
She has had issues that I have not had, she says that her phone randomly turns to silent periodically and causes her to miss calls, and she also says her bluetooth is intermittent. I don't use blue tooth at all so I wouldn't know but I have not had an issue with randomly going to silent. I have tried a lot of custom roms over the past 2 months since I rooted, including CM11, CM10 (all of them), AOKP, slimroms, of course Gummy, and a variety of others. All of them have had some major bug that is unbearable, from not connecting to wifi or not sending and receiving MMS, except for gummy which I have only had the random reboots.
Okay, so when I rooted mine originally I made a nandroid copy of the original rom after I rooted it, I didn't realize but somehow this nandroid file created to my internal memory instead of my sd card, so when I loaded a custom rom it was deleted. Like I said I'm far from an expert and that was a huge mistake. So anyway when I rooted my moms (same phone) I made a nandroid of her stock rom after the root and saved it to my computer, tablet, flash drive, external hd... etc.
Now that she is having problems with the absolute best ROM that I have found functionality wise, I thought I would restore her stock rom and debloat it, try my best to get it running better. I used her nandroid back up and restored my phone to it, only to get a ton of errors, everything was force closing. I kept getting the popups that "unfortunately ... has stopped" they were nonstop. Literally all I could do was hit ok and try to do the same with the next window, finally I get rid of those and the phone wouldn't run any apps or make any calls etc. So I rebooted to recovery and went restored my nandroid that I made earlier that day and all is fine with my phone again.
So here is my questions. First off when I made the nandroid of her stock rom I renamed the file STOCKROM, that way I would def know what it is and to not delete it. Will renaming a nandroid file make it not work correctly?
Also would a nandroid back up of her phone simply not work correctly on mine? I thought it would but it def does not. Maybe there is saved data that doesn't match my sim card.. I have no clue.
If I used this nandroid on her phone do you think it will work corretly?
If I messed up the file be renaming it, does anyone have a backup for stock that I can possibly use?
Last but not least, any recommendations for custom roms for d2att? I really just want speed, and no bugs
I am really sorry about the excessively long post, but I wanted to fill in the background info before I asked my questions, in case it was needed. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Again please forgive me if I broke a forum rule or posted in the wrong spot, I don't typically post on any forums ever, I just tend to read the posts of others. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY AND ALL HELP, GREATLY APPRECIATED.

If you decide to go back to stock 4.3, this thread should help. AT&T I747 UCUEMJB Stock Restore
I've never had to use a nandroid and definitely have not tried one on a phone different from where it was made, but from reading in the past I don't believe that renaming it is causing the problem. I believe it is probably due to either trying it on a different phone or the file structure may have been changed when you moved it to the pc. Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in regarding the nandroid on your phone. If it is still on her phone I think it may work.
thanks

Thanks for the tips. I know its still on her phone and the name hasnt been altered. I wanted ti try a debloated touch wiz for her. I havr liked Gummy but loaded a carbon jelly beam tonight. So far so good. Any suggestions for custom ROMs for attd2? I have had a time finding one bthats useful. I'm glad I have my gummy on nandroid. When I finish screwing around for her that's where I'll head back to I'm sure. Unless I find a sweet bug free ROM through a reccomendation. I'll check the link in the AM thanks for the reply.

You MUST have the UCUEMJB or UCUEMJ2 bootloader and the UCUEMJB modem installed before proceeding or this ROM will not work properly. Your data and wifi may be broken if you do not do this first. These are available here: Bootloader and Modem Options

Quick question. I have only rooted and flashed cm toms and aokp. I haven't done anything specifically to change my boatloadsoor kernel. I really don't have the knowledge absolute that. The first step says what's listed above. What does this mean? Can you help? Thanks for the time and tips.

Constant Rebooting

So my friends Boss' son tried to be all "l33t h4x3r" and mess with his S6(sm-g920p). First he ruined his EFS section of the phone, the Baseband is Unknown, no IMEI number, Software Version is Unknown, and his radio wasn't working. I think he then tried to do some crazy **** in ODIN, "No Clue he doesn't remember". Well i've never ran into a constant reboot issue with any Android phones i've owned. I've had bootloops but this is throwing me for a loop. I've tried:
Loading TWRP wiping everything and trying a Custom ROM
Using Odin to Recover back to Stock
Honestly im not sure whats up anymore or if his phone is even fixable at this time.

Hi, you certainly have a challenge there. It sounds like you need to restore both the partitions and the stock OS.
If the phone is a 32 GB model, please see the whole thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/help/operating-smg920p-t3263325
There is a PIT file linked at post 16, instructions for using it at post 22. Also a link for the latest stock TAR file.
Again, this would be for 32 GB model, but you want to flash first the PIT and then the TAR.
I think I may have done that already too but I'll look again once in home and see if maybe I did it in the wrong order. Thanks for the quick reply friend. ?
Well i did as instructed but Baseband is still unknown and it is still rebooting over and over :/

I recommend he brings it to Sprint, after they "diagnose" it and declear its broken they should be able to replace it. Just make sure its as close to stock as possible that way it does not seem rooted.

That is about the only option left. There are other options to restore the efs (pretty much rebuild it from scratch) but that is not something an every day user can do. I had an efs issue on my S4. I was tinkering with things I shouldn't have, forget exactly what I was doing, it was on T-Mobile so I think I was trying to remove the data cap (was on prepaid). Was pretty much in the same boat as OP but was able to completely from scratch rebuild the stuff that belongs in the efs directory. Some stuff I never restored but didn't seem to affect the device.

This was many many years ago. What saved me was the fact that Notepad++ keeps a copy of the file you have open even when you close the program. I just had to remember what things needed to be reverted back and the edits undone. I guess I didn't really rebuild it from scratch lol.

Yeah sadly I have no idea how the efs is populated. The second instance I get a new phone, dd is done on the efs partition and created into a .img file.

Koop's firmware didn't work with my phone either. This version of it fixed mine for some reason. Try flashing it to yours

Now i got same issue i accidently restored efs and ah man ive tried every thing it reboots after 2 or 3 mins no matter what rom back up i have and i have efs and radio with all my back ups ive restored it also no luck. Guess im going to the sprint store tomorrow even after i flashed stock 6.0.1 i can get to about half way through wifi setup before it reboots no matter what 2-3 minutes phone reboots unless in twrp
Still no luck becareful and dont try to restore efs i suppose in twrp. Your phone may never stop rebooting ive flashed 2 different 6.0.1 builds one was the revo other was from sammobil both @koop1955 has them PB6 6.0.1 odin doesnt fix this.
YOYOYO
Well wtf or omg it completely died left it for a day. Now its working so far it hasnt rebooted in 30 mins LOL but dude sucks going to a phone with kitkat after using marshmallow and one of the fastest phones made for awhile. I did pull the sim card out and try it in a old boost maybe that reset something idk its working though. My problems were Rebooting constantly after 2-3 mins no matter what rom i had even stock.

Backed up my EFS before ever even rooting. Stuck that bad boy in Dropbox for safety. *pats self on back*
Last one of these topics I seen, end result was JTAG.

BEcareful if u restore that efs. i backed up too but once in twrp. Now all i did was check restore efs by accident just tried restoring a renegade rom system, boot, and data. Tell you what i wont be rushing through crap and am fine with stock for awhile. Probably will still take the replacement when it comes its white the black one i got is too blue.

I've got a raw partition backup as well as one through TWRP. If you check md5/sha hashes for data integrity, and only install software instances specific to your device, aside from manually monkeyin around
Hey needless to say im researching full partition backups did you use a app by wanam partitions back up and restore? Or just simple adb commands. Last used adb on a moto e 2nd with success on unlocking. Once i got a new harddrive haven't needed it.

Theres similar issues happening on sprint note 5s as well and has a couple threads currently speaking about this problem. Strange strange. It happened to me after updating to mm and then rooting.
Well i did try the note rom right before and when i did hit restore efs it after wiping system data boot from moar MM rom phone rebooted for days then after few resets and odin flashes i let it die then a day later it worked.
Correct but have always preferred the 925p roms.
Well i helped another with the rebooting issue on any rom.
He tried everything then but let it die after battery died plug it in and bingo his worked to
IF CONSTANT REBOOTING.
LET THE BATTERY COMPLETLY DRAIN.
AFTER FLASHING STOCK.
