Quick thought on silicone cases. - Galaxy Note 10.1 Accessories

I thought I would enjoy having a simple silicone case for my SGN10.1. I just bought one and although it looks very nice there are some unexpected negatives.
The silicone adds A LOT of weight to the tablet. It is really noticeable and my hands get tired holding it and thumb typing. Another negative is that the silicone is just a little slippery. This means I have to grip the tablet harder which means again that my hands become fatigued.
Just one of those things that looks like a great idea until you actually use it then you realize you don't like it.

It's only slippery the first few days. I find silicone cases to be lighter than all others, depending on the one that you buy. The one that's available that covers the edge to beyond the speakers would be much heavier. I have drop issues and silicone, after the first couple days, provides superior grip IMO. This from a long time user who has had a silicone case, not TPU, on every device I've owned for the last 15 years +.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case, no pun intended.

I use Samsung bookcover case, and it adds a lot of weight too.

Fully agree.
I bought amzer silicone case, and it made my tablet really heavy.
My 4 year old looked at me with "really??" eyes the first time i handed him the rablet with case put on it...
i think the case itself makes the tablet more prone to falls owing to additional weight.
I returned amzer silicone case.
Instead i am considering buying tpu gel case and stuffing the edges from inside with eraser rubber cut out to match shape.

I personally got this gel case:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10-1-Cover/dp/B009CUN1X2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Does the job: Cheap, protective, and clear, so it doesn't detract from the looks of the device!
Tiny bit loose by the charger and IR blaster.
Have a look

That's TPU, not true silicone. I have a TPU case - first ever - and really hate it. I ordered a true silicone case, but it hasn't arrived so I'm not ready to comment.

Received the silicone case and it rocks. Great fit, superior grip. Very pleased. Far better than the get-by
TPU case I bought while waiting.

There seems to be 2 types of materials, 3 finishes.
On mine, the clearish part is a slightly-bendable hard plastic with the texture of what all of my matte hard plastic. Think the type of plastic that is one most power adapters (that aren't shiny) but add a slightly bendable aspect to it.
The black part on the back is shiny, slick, smooth, and more flexible. It's similar to silicon cases (what I can assume you mean by soft gel/rubber) but I think it's still different. It seems to be less "floppy" even though it is very bendable. The shiny black part seems to "stick" to certain surfaces (such as my desk and other hard/flat surfaces) but not to some that you would expect (it doesn't stick to my pockets at all and glides just fine across my clothing, car seat, and non-leather furniture - it might stick to leather, I don't know). The black part on the front appears to be the same material as the black part on the back, but with a matte finish. The result of the different finish is that it doesn't have the "stickiness" on much of any surface, yet still gives your hand a slight bit of grip beyond what the stock TBolt gives you.
Overall, the "feel in hand" is comfortable and it gives you extra grip but doesn't feel sticky or anything like that. Imagine going from a slick, hard-plastic phone to a phone with a rubberized body (like our TBolt has). Going from a naked TBolt to this case is kinda like taking that one step further. But in no way could I ever describe it as "feeling sticky" in my hand or pocket.

So it looks like/feels like it's not going to just fall apart or anything like that, if that's what you mean. I can't envision drops/dings or other daily use wearing it down.
The ONE concern that I have about it holding up is because it is made with two types of "plastic" (I don't know if it's plastic, silicon, rubber, or whatever, hence my quotes). I fear that if I take the case off and on a lot (for my car dock), that the joints of the two plastics might start to come apart. This is NOT based on any quality issues that I have seen so far, just a concern based on the fact that this wasn't produced in a single mold when it was melted down (this is coming from somebody with an engineering background).
I will be shocked, though, if I have a problem with this case in the next 6 months, and for $5, well, I'd say that's pretty damned good!

Read my post a couple posts up about the 2 different types of materials with 3 finishes. As best as I can tell, the inside is the same material as the outside. What this means is that 60% of it is the very flexible plastic while the clear part does cover ~40% of the back. I would expect the black part to offer more protection to a fall/bump than the clear part, and fortunately the black part covers most of the corners and edges. Still, I expect the clear part to offer more protection than a hard plastic case would.
Updated the OP with some photos. Perhaps they will help.
thanks for the detailed feedback!
This case will also fit into the Verizon holster/shell combo holster. You just can't use the VZW shell, but it'll slide into the holster. The fit is a little snug, but it works. I like to swap out this case with the VZW shell. This one provies more protection, but the VZW one is pretty cool too.
In case anybody was wondering, I got mine from this seller from China: http://goo.gl/62Fhx
It took something like 10 days to get to me, but I didn't mind since it cost less than a good burger.

Trident Aegis- Best Case Available

Honestly, this is the best case for the E4GT:
http://www.tridenteer.com/categories/Samsung-Epic-4G-Touch/
Available for $20 on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Touch...PACW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327710501&sr=8-1
Its a 2 piece silicone/hard plastic. Perfect snug fit. In fact I messed up my nails trying to take it off to change my screen protector. Not tacky to the touch; slides into pocket no problem. Comes with a clear screen protector. Has covers for the usb and headphone ports.
The side buttons are even easier to press since they stick out even more, and the silicone is extra hard in the buttons so you don't have to press hard at all. Now, if you're looking to keep that slim and lightweight look, this case is not for you. But if you're looking for straight up functionality coupled with unrivaled protection, you NEED this case.

It's absolutely worth the upgrade. I came from the Diztronic TPU case, which was really nice,... good fitment, slim & light. I've had the Aegis on my E4GT for about a week now and it's super. I'm almost glad Otterbox ain't doing anything for this phone. They really screwed da pooch on their Evo 3D case, and I ended up replacing it with an Aegis. So putting one on this phone needed little thought.

I have had this case on for about two weeks. So far so good. Has saved from falls already and keeps the fine dust junk out of the that crack between the screen and the plastic on the phone. I love the side hard buttons, and there is a fine mesh covering the mic and back speaker holes. I got the Ballistic green color. It looks like the website image, just a weee bit darker. weeeee bit. Did nto use the screen protector that came with it, so no comments on that.
Wow,... didn't notice the mesh over the speaker and mic. Added bonus!
My Aegis was here in my box when I came home from a weekend of snowboarding. I feel a lot better with this puppy wrapping up my fon. Looks and feels pretty sweet!
Looks too much like a "case". A fatal cheesifying flaw of almost every case... along with making your uber-thin phone as thick as a deck of cards.
And I'm always dubious about hard plastic. It'll transfer shock to whatever it's against... could be the phone. That'll make the case survive a drop, not the phone. If it's got soft rubber inside the hard plastic, that kind of makes the hard plastic just unneeded bulk... and look like, well, your phone is in a "case".
I am a big fan of my $8 TPU case. That TPU material is the right compromise between hard and soft, and it fits so well it doesn't even look like a case. Looks elegant even, in matte black. I wish they made a white one, would look like a white version of the phone. For the price of this case at the super-discount Amazon price, you'd have two TPU cases plus a few bucks in your pocket.

What case do you use?

What is a good minimal case for the Atrix?
I care more about feel than protection.
If you use or are going to be using any of the docks, don't bother with an actual case. Too much of a pain to deal with every time you dock and undock (I used to think otherwise!).
I took mine off because it now just goes between my desk or pocket and the vehicle dock.
That said, if you are not using a dock, this case from Seido is rock-solid and looks great, Comes in several colors, this one just happens to match my roadster.
(while I really wouldn't characterize this case as "minimal," compared to an Otter Box, it is!)
I've been using a Seidio Surface for about a week:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=mobile&field-keywords=seidio+surface+atrix
Very impressed with the quality of this case which feels good and is very slimline and lightweight yet still sturdy.
You'll find video reviews of the case on Youtube which may be helpful.
The added advantage for you living in the US is you will only have to pay about half the amount I did to get one posted over here to the UK!
I was using an otterbox.. But i find it makes it hard to swipe at the edges of the phone so I'm back to being bare
I had a Speck candy shell case for awhile, but I found it made the screen smudge when I would try to clean it so I took it off.

Incipio feather, but they keep cracking. Even though the company is great and has already sent me replacements twice.
I have ordered these now
Doesn't really qualify as a "case" as such, but a full body kit from Zagg definitely qualifies as minimal. I take pretty good care of my phones and hate the extra bulk in my pocket so it works for me. Having said that, these don't help much in a fall...
I've used several cases but ended up with just the zagg front. The battery cover completely covers the corners so I didn't feel the extra bulk of a case was really worth the extra protection. Plus they're cheap to replace and cases are a pain when using docks.

You are amazingly lucky you haven't shattered the screen! You know what they say though, 3rd time's the charm! lol
I, too, have gone caseless. I've got a screen protector on it, but I figure that all the corners and back panel are just a piece of cheap plastic. When it comes time to resell my phone I'll just buy a shiny new backplate for the same price as a nice case. It's worked for almost a year now.
It depends on your taste, but the Otterbox case I bought is actually pretty good protection and slim factor. Only thing is that you lose the ability to use the docks.
I've gone case-less also. Due to the slippery feel, I definitely wanted a case but there wasn't a good, grippy option that could still be used with the cardock. Surprisingly enough, I've trained myself to grip the phone carefully and its only been dropped once but with no damage (from 6 feet high). Moto builds tanks.

Best looking case with lip?

Currently the search function is down, but basically I am looking for a case for my new One. I love the build quality and aesthetics of the phone, but sadly it gives me a heart attack leaving it naked, I feel like I handle it like a live bomb haha. I never drop my phone, so drop protection isn't important to me, but what IS important to me is scratch protection on this aluminum body, the glass and camera, so I am looking for the best aesthetically looking option to provide scratch protection and a lip on the front so the phone can be placed face down or on hard surfaces without a worry.
I don't want to add too much bulk to the phone, so the cases I am considering are the KLD Oscar 2: http://www.amazon.com/Oscar-Style-S...d=1383336670&sr=1-1&keywords=htc+one+case+kld
...and the Diztronic TPU case: http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Mat...8&qid=1383334154&sr=1-2&keywords=htc+one+case
I prefer TPU cases, but I hate the camera cut out for the Diztronic one, even though they make great products. I also don't want a white or clear case because I know they normally discolor after a while.
So please help with suggestions that are:
-Nice aesthetic look and feel
-Not very bulky
-dark color (only because I want to avoid the discoloration issues)
-soft or matte material
-provides face down and camera table protection/scratch protection
-Under $20
I have also have heard many reports of the Double Dip cases scratching phones, so even though I like some of the black alternative options, I don't really want to risk it.
I'm using a fosmon dura fro m7 case from amazon in blue, it is cheap, looks pretty good (have received some compliments) works well enough and doesn't show discoloration like the previous clear tpu case I had.
Try the Poetic case.
I have the black one and it keeps the phone slim. However, the top and bottom edges are relatively exposed.

i use the diztronic in black. the smooth rubber has a nice feel in my hands, slides easily in and out of jeans and doesn't add a lot of bulk. the camera cutout doesnt bother me, i prefer it to some easily scratched piece of plexi or w/e.
dropped my phone on brick stairs last week. it bounced around and landed face down, not a mark on the screen. for $10, i dont think i could be happier.

No it doesn't. It has edges on both sides that will lift the phone up a bit. See attached picture from Amazon.
@bcparker
I quite like the cruzerlite cases. They are very high quality and have very nice designs. imo, their TPU cases are the best TPU cases on the market (I like TPU cases)
http://www.cruzerlite.com/cases/htc/one
I know you said no clear tpu cases but I really am liking this one so far, the cimo grip. I figure that for $10 I can afford to buy another in a few months if it discolors. They do come in other colors but I really like to be able to see the back of the phone, at least on a phone this nice. I like the fact that all of the edges are protected. The only thing I do not like so far is that the volume is almost impossible to change via the side buttons. The case covers the volume and you're trying to push through the case. Not a huge deal breaker as I rarely change the volume but it's a little annoying. I may take a knife and cut out the plastic. Again, it's cheap enough to play around with. If I ruin it I can buy another....

I might be getting slow in my old age but I realized the joke while browsing different threads 5 minutes later
I ended up getting a Meifeng (Bear Motion) in grey off eBay. I picked it up over the Amazon bear motion models simply because I thought the logo was nicer looking on the case and it was $7.50 with free shipping vs around $12 without Amazon prime. I LOVE how it looks (rear cutouts are perfect) and the texture is great. I recommend it for fellow sure handed users.
Lip is almost non-existent and I think the volume button is tough to press and the SIM cutout unnecessary, but the look and texture is sooo primo, looks like it the phone was meant to look like that. I think I'm going to pick up another brand case also though. I value the clean, premium look and feel, so some of these suggestions with gaudy logos or designs (including my man the little android guy) aren't necessarily for me.
The poetic palettes seem nice, I didn't even know colors were available. Here are the rest I'm considering.
-Nillkin Shield
-Poetic Palette
-KLD Oscar 2
-Diztronic or Hyperion TPU

Which Spigen case is best for Nexus 5, between the neohybrid and slimarmour?

Hey guys,
I know this is totally subjective. However, I have been looking for a case for my nexus 5. I like the Spigen NeoHybrid, and Slimarmor so far, however I have heard bad things about the Neohybrid, and that the Slimarmor is somewhat bulky. Some guidance is needed. Thank you!

Spigen cases are always good to use and I have used slim armour of it...and I just love that case....so my vote will go for Slim Armour.....
---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:58 PM ----------
you can also check out the ultra hybrid one too...thats too a really nice case to go for....:good:
sometimes thick cases will mess with the camera by changing the light sensitivity because the lens and/or flash are shrouded. go on amazon and read the reviews... i decided against the slim armor because of potential camera issues and because people complained about the buttons either being hard to press, or no feedback/bad feel from the buttons. but it does look like it would protect the phone well and with tpu instead of cheap silicone like all those old iphone cases i had to deal with years ago i'm sure it's still a pretty good case. but i went with the neo hybrid and it should be here this afternoon so i'll give my opinion then.
I have the slim armour. I was a bit disappointed at how bulky it is when I first put it on my Nexus, however I have grown accustomed to it and it is a good quality case.
The button feedback is actually the best I've ever experienced on a case. Really nice.
I would personally prefer a slimmer case but if you're not worried about bulk, slim armour is a definite one to look at.
I got a Slim Armor and the buttons are no good. Makes them feel spongy. I'm returning it and ordering a Neo Hybrid.
Pretty awesome. Thank you guys!! Anyone encountered fitting problems with the neohybrid, especially the use of the headset jack?
I have the slimarmor. The power button is a bit too snug and i feel alot of dusk seeps into the bottom of the case.
However, I have dropped the phone 2 times on the ground outside (concrete) and there's not one nick on the case itself and the phone is perfectly fine. It does add a bit of bulk, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I can't promise I'll stay with this one for good, but It will definitely be in rotation with other cases

A drop test! Thanks for your service:good:
Feeling better about my slim armor now!
I got the neo hybrid. I was unhappy with the size it made the phone and The grippiness. I think it looks nice though.
I returned it. Now have the nilkin v series flip case on order.

I have both and like the slim armor better. Better protection and list slippery. If you want slimmer I also have the ultra hybrid which I feel is made better than the neo hybrid and is slimmer. That's my 2 cents on the issue.
i have the neo hybrid and think it's fine as a case. the case buttons transfer the tactile feel of the phone's buttons very well.

It is good to have real life drop test. This is the exact reason why I bought this case (ordered, shipped, but not received yet).
I have the Neo Hybrid on mine and I love it. It makes the phone easier to hold and adds a nice layer of protection. Plus it looks pretty awesome!

Any issues with camera flash?

i just got the neo hybrid. it adds more bulk to the phone than i thought... the back is thin but something about squaring off the back makes it feel a lot bigger. also the tpu + bumper adds some width. i was afraid of button access problems through the cutouts with some of the tpu cases out there so i didn't go with a cheap tpu case, maybe i would have been happier with a contoured case rather than this but overall it's a very good case. the power button feedback is a little less, but the button works consistently, my dennon headphones fit, but others might not, the phone stills charges wirelessly without problems.
I picked up the Slim Armor and love it. Great protection around the corners, screen, and camera lens. For a two layer case, it doesn't feel bulky at all. Fits very nice in the hand IMO.

None that I've noticed with my Neo Hybrid. I just wish it wasn't so difficult to remove.
I haven't actually tried either case (because I haven't even gotten my phone yet... backorder ) but I would trade bulkiness for protection by getting the dual layer Slim Armor. I have had a dual layer case on my current phone and I have dropped a couple times over the past two years. In combination with a screen protector, a dual layer case can be the best insurance for your phone without actually paying $100-200 for real insurance.
I was originally planning on the Neo Hybrid just cuz it looks so damn nice but more than 1 person has said its very slippery... and that'd be silly to buy a case only for you to drop it more often.
I ordered the Slim Armor instead, waiting for it to arrive. Amazon's shipping is kind of wonky, they said 2 day delivery but the package has just sat at UPS's facilities for the past 3 days and its scheduled for tomorrow- oh wait, of course UPS changed the date to Thursday.
Hate UPS, but cant wait to get my hands on the case. Hoping it doesn't have the accursed power button issue (though I reckon it won't be too difficult to fix anyway).
I recently got the slim armor. Quality case. Make sure you play around with putting it on. The buttons are very sensitive as you've probably read elsewhere and would turn the phone off. After about 2 tries I got it on and the buttons are working normally.:good:
