Slow HSPA+ 4G speeds on t-mobile. How to increase? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My Gnex is on t-mobile's $20 unlimited, non-throttle data plan. My speedtest.net app only go up to 6-7Mbps. Max. Average is around 6Mbps.
How can I increase my download speed? I live in an area where my cell signal is excellent, at around -57 db.
I am using a new 4G sim card. If that's even a question.
-My rom is AOKP JB Milestone 1 with Franco Kernel Milestone 6 with baseband XXLH1
Q's
1) Is cell signal positively correlated with data speeds? If I have very good cell phone reception, should I have great data speeds as well?
2) I live in the SF Bay Area (San Jose/Santana Row). What is your experience?
3) What ROM/ Kernel/ baseband are you using?
You help would be appreciated to boost my downloads!

your speeds are fine, where they are supposed to be. the speeds depend on network traffic. top speeds will be in the middle of the night. many get speeds under 1mbps, thats considered slow, not 6-7mbps.

I too have the ($30) unlimited 4G rate pan and I usually avg around 5-6 down and 1.5 up. While I'd take higher speeds, those averages are more than fine for me, especially considering I literally got 0.10 down from Sprint on my E4GT.

it should let your speeds hit the max faster. max being what is available at your network at the time. it might also let you see slightly higher speed on average. just add them to the end of your build.prop, save it, then reboot for it to take affect. this is for tmobile(or other gsm carriers).

it would depend on your local network. some it helps, some it doesnt. in nyc, it helps me out. i make sure its one of the first things i add after any rom flashing.

that looks like good speed to me. I got around the same speed, sometimes like 8~10 with my tmo sim so it's correct speed.

I have Verizon LTE form about 2 years now and I have hit over 10MB/sec only about 4 times... Otherwise I hover around 5... I wouldn't complain about that speed.. 6MB/Sec is a good speed to me

Try run the speedtest on the computer tethering to your phone. I got 5-6 on my phone but 9-10 on my computer.

Just tried that build.prop 'fix' and now I get 3.2mbps.

Sprint throttles 4G

For some time now ive been doing some speedtest on Sprints 4G network and it seems that they throttle 4G because it seems consistent with standard ISP's who throttle also unless you pay for a higher speed. WiMAX is way much powerful and faster than LTE and it has been proven so why is it that sprint seems to only get 10mbps Download and ONLY 10mbps.could they be doing this for a reason ?? I want to know what you guys think ??

There is people that pull over 10 mb/s
wimax is CAPABLE of much higher speeds, however it is dependant on soo many factors i.e. signal stregth, server loads, amount of users connected to the tower, etc, etc.
Just because your not getting the stated speeds (theoretical) does not mean they are throttling. this goes for any ISP bro
It all depends on how many people are connected at the same time. There's only so much bandwidth to go around. There are times when your speed will be slower because more people are connected to the same tower. Just like cable broadband... There are peak times when your speed will be slower

Obviously i know that look at verizon they have more customers and their LTE can pull off 22mbps plus WIMAX (clearwire) has i believe the largest bandwidth/spectrum in the U.S.A
ISP do throttle if you didnt know that if they didnt all the basic data suscribers would be hitting 50mbps.

Couldn't say myself, 4G keeps disconnecting for me constantly, not exactly thrilled with the 4G performance of Sprint at the moment .....
Where I live I get 2 bars of 4G. 2 out of 3. Wimax 4G sucks for me. I probably get around 1mb download.

1mb is still way better than Sprint 3G!
I think it may have something to do with heat/power. I know wimax is capable of >10mbps but at what cost in terms of battery life? If there were low power cool running wimax chips im sure they could push the envelope.

But for 4G speed it's terrible. It's suppose to be 4G!! My brother has the Google Nexus S on T-Mobile and his 3G tops out around 3MB. Makes my 3G look like garbage lol. He's able to tether and the speeds are not bad at all. It's decent enough to tether. I can not tether on 3G because the speed is so slow. I have to be on 4G or else it's not even worth tethering. No internet at home so I rely on my phone.

WiMAX is a lot larger frequency, as where LTE is short. It is a lot easier to push LTE than WiMAX because WiMAX requires thrice as many towers to keep the signal from fading.
At work, I pull anywhere from 4-6 down and 0.7-1.5 up. Out and about in the Orange/Santa Ana area, I've gotten as high as 16 down and 4 up. It really just depends like others said, on area and users.
sorry we don't throttle, now what the network can handle during peak hours may be when your affected, but overall we do not touch delivery speed, go talk to t mobile they will tell you we don't, they are the experts lol

From very close by and it depends on how busy network is and where you are. There are also "bursts" which is why you will get 4-6Mbps download then suddenly get @ 12 Mbps down score. My upload speed is consistently 1.4-1.45 Mbps up. The cap on upload is 1.5

That is a speed CAP not throttling. CAP is set top end limit and you won't go faster.
Throttling is when they gradually (or not so gradually) reduce your speeds after a certain period of time or data use.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I could've sworn that if Wimax was deployed at a lower frequency it can have just as good penetration as LTE. Its just Clearwire's Wimax is at 2.6GHz which sucks with penetration.

Rogers download speeds

I'm currently on Rogers Canada right now. I have the Gnex NON-LTE version. I've been doing speedtests on my device and I've constantly been getting around 250kB/s, usually less. There are a couple times where I reached 850kB/s but most of the time just 250 which is quite slow. I've tested this in open areas.
The baseband it came with is UGKL1. I've been downloading stuff and usually I get around 250kb/s or even slower.
I now switched to the newer radio UGLA4. I am getting about the same results. Once or twice I did speedtests and got 640kb/s.
My feeling is that its Rogers network that's constantly giving me poor download speeds. Does anyone else have faster speeds with non-LTE Gnex on rogers? Any solutions? I've looked around but to no avail.
I just tested mine (Rogers Network) and I was getting a consistent 1mb/s upload and download. I do however at the moment have a good quality hspa connection.

That's not the LTE version right? What baseband are you using and where are you located in canada? I'm in the Vancouver region.
I think I partially figured out the reason why I'm getting slow speeds. I'm currently using AOKP ROM (milestone 4). There's a power saver setting where if I'm idle for a certain amount time (ie 10mins) it turns my connection to 2G. Yes I set that up. Once I wake my device it turns 3G/HSDPA back on. However going into the secret menu (*#*#4636#*#*) I noticed that the preferred network type is set on "GSM/CDMA auto". This is likely the be the issue, if I want HSDPA it should be set on WCDMA. Now I've set that to WCDMA Preferred. Doing a speed test I'm getting speeds of 400-500kb/s. That's a drastic improvement. However upload remains to be the same at around 150kb/s. However keeping the power saving option it reverts back to the "GSM/CDMA auto" after idle time.
I don't think I have quite solved my issue as this device should be about to download/upload at faster speeds. I'm going to change back to my old baseband and see. Please let me know the details about your phone, thanks!
Edit: I see you're from PEI. Let me know your baseband still, thanks!
That doesn't sound like a radio problem, sounds more like a tower problem. Have you triend driving around ant testing your signals in different places? I usually get between 2,5 and 9mps in and around montreal. Where did you try? Were your four signal bars on with the H and the arrow?

Yes I have. I get about the same results. I have tried both open areas and inside buildings. I just reinstalled old radio and my speeds with WCDMA only enabled gets me about 300+kB/s.
Just to clarify my kB/s or kb/s is kilobytes for seconds (not bits).
I doubt we should be having tower problems in Vancouver though....
So I tried driving around more with the new baseband I got about 1000kB/s. Upload was still slow at around 200kB/s. Any reason why? I found some people believe that rogers caps the limit but still too low for me.
Could possibly be your carrier throttling the speed? For most users 250kbs is more than enough.
I have the gsm version and live in the UK. If I get 2.5mb download speeds over HSPA I consider it fast!

Yea it's been pretty much up and down for me. Most of the time I get around 500kbyte/s and around 230 indoor. Upload is just pure crap for me outside or in. I've been getting around 150-200kbyte/s, mostly 160ish. Sometimes I even get 80kB/s. This is a problem and I don't know if its the phone or just poor coverage. I'm leaning towards poor coverage as I did manage to get a fast 900kbyte/s download and 250kbyte/s upload.
To those moving to mobilicty, honestly the coverage with them is worse. I can't stand dropped calls. I have friends who are on both wind and mobilicity and they tell me about the dropped calls. I sometimes have to make important calls and dropped calling is a nono. They can deal with it but for me I can't.
I've been with Mobilicity for just over a year now and I have never once had a dropped call. Coverage is poor though I've just never been on a call with poor coverage I guess. Basically if you stay editing the gta minus oakville you will have no problems

Stay with Sprint?

Sept 1st and my contract is up.
I love the epic, but time for a new phone. It got me thinking how much do I like sprint. Honestly I love the price. The internet has been awful. Phone calls have been dropping like flies for the last few months.
I saw this test about 3g/4g speeds
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2405607,00.asp
So I started to look, and it seems like T Mobile would be the same price as sprint. The others would not be much more.
Just wondering what you guys are thinking, and if anyone has had t mobile.
Now if only I could get the peoples rom on it I would be sold.
September first for me too.
Only difference, I'm being ripped off financially by Sprint.
So I'm definitely jumping ship.
As for me I'm looking at T-Mobile at $70 savings over Sprint, and Verizon at $30. Verizon has superior everything, T-Mobile has price. Hmmm.
Frankly it's all the same as far as T-Mobile and Sprint go. The coverage you're going to get with T-Mobile will vary depending on location, and will get better signal in some places as opposed to Sprint, and vice versa. I get full bars at my cousins cabin up north, while my uncle's T-Mobile phone can't get a signal whatsoever. A few miles further and it's flipped.
As far as data speed go you will see a defined performance boost. Sprint's data is the worst in the business, so the only way is up. HSPA+ gets the same, if not better speeds than full bars 4G on Sprint. I'll take throttling over consistent crap speeds any day.
My contract is up at the same time but I think the smartest thing for me to do would be to see how good lte is by december. I work in a sprint store but still not satisfied with the data like u guys. LTE should be covered as much as wiimax by the end of 2012 and should be covered double of wiimax coverage by next year. Still have hope lol. However I am extremely satisfied with my bill though. On a family plan with jp morgan discounts. Each of us pay exactly 50 a month and it covers the whole bill.
I'd say if your not going to be covered in LTE or have at least decent coverage, then jump ships. I should be pretty much covered here in Central Texas so... I'm not to worried about my .20mbps 3G connection for very much longer.

Cell strength bars and 4G speeds are unrelated. I have had no bars and no 3G and still connect to 4G with better speeds than that. 4G is a different band.
You think that is bad, try waiting 20 minutes for AT&T to connect to 4G hspa. They are so bad in Daytona I have to reboot the work devices 2 or 3 times to connect.

IMO,this is very clear, given the endless hardware and compatibility issues you have run across
As to speeds...
I get 4-5mb speeds on 4G in both DC and Baltimore, though 4G is DC is much more spotty than in Baltimore.
My 3G speeds suck, but are close to the 1mb range typically.
I would be VERY hard pressed to leave Sprint.
Verizon is WAY to expensive, and has data caps
T-Mobile is cheaper, but has no batter coverage than Sprint, AND throttles data
AT&T? forget about it!
In reality, unless I am willing to shell out a bunch more $$, and live with data caps, I feel I would be hard pressed to do better than Sprint
I live in Salt Lake and Sprint has as good a service as Verizon.
AT&T is garbage. I moved down here for school from Alaska where they were the best hands down. Tmo is about the same. With roam control to get Verizon when I travel somewhere Sprint sucks there just isn't any reason to switch. My 4G speeds here are 4-5 mbps. 3G is about the same as AT&T.

Well he may not be getting 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up consistently (those numbers are admittedly rare for me) if at all and/or is just a bit eager to experience LTE. I know I'm a bit curious to experience LTE myself although I can wait. Where in NYC are you getting those numbers? I rarely see 20 Mbps down here in Queens.

Actually in queens too loll and to be exact I get those numbers constantly near LGCC. I work in lower Manhattan and experience the same speed. Have you played with your modem?

As a recent Sprint to T-Mobile switch, I really do not see the huge need for LTE. On Sprint, things were horrible. It was very rare occasion when speeds went up more than 700kbps. Latency was horrible too. Had a ton of timeouts even on simple text pages. Google Maps took forever to come back with results. With T-mobile, in NYC, I am frequently seeing 20+mbps speeds. I would say average is about 17mbps. I can do all things I could never do on Sprint now, like watch Netflix, Youtube, stream Pandora and such.
So, am I really itching for LTE? nope. I mean, it would be nice to have, but am I counting the days? No. On Sprint, LTE is viewed as a great savior from slow internet speeds. On T-Mobile, internet speeds are already amazing.
So, let me ask you this. Why can't you wait for LTE? What is it going to give you that HSPA+ won't? It's a honest question, I am really curious. And please, something other than "2x current speed"

as multiplayer online gaming on our handsets will get more advanced, gameplay could use the lte connection. i was never a phone gamer, but nowadays i see myself gaming alot. waiting for more real time multiplayer shooters and racers to come out.

2-6mbps up, eh? Show me a single screenshot of HSPA+ speedtest when you see more than 5mbps up. Or even more than 4mbps up!
thanks.

I see people play COD3 and WoW on home DSL connections that top out at 5mbps. About 4x slower than HSPA+ speeds that I get now. So as you can see, LTE is not required for gaming.

Well, most of my upload speedtests are in mid 2000 range. Highest one was 3040kbps. According to a quick search, HSPA+ max upload is around 5.7mbps

not required, but latency would probably be better.

Speed isn't that important for most games. What does matter is latency, which is significantly lower on LTE, apparently.

Most of my speedtest pings are between 20 and 30ms. In comparison, business cable connection ping to 8.8.8.8 in the office has an average of 35ms. My home FiOS connection gets me 20-25.

Seriously sprint? This is what I waited almost a year for?

Give me a efffing break
I love the 90s. Good times.
LMAO those speeds look good compared to mine. Frankfort, KY here and average around 200kpbs down.

It's about the same speed I had on my epic 4g. Thought it would be way faster. I'm going run another test and post.

It could be 4G, I've seen broadband speeds on 4G before, but the upload speed seems like it is being throttled.

Exactly what a huge waste. Verizon 3g speed is faster than that crap I posted
I am barely hitting 3mbits on 4g here in Michigan. Even when i was in downtown Chicago i was only hitting about 5mbits on 4g. Maybe its just slow cause they are not finished yet?
Wait one GD minute. You are getting .371mbs on LTE???
Is this good? Lol

OP, you must not be connected to your nearest site. Given your 1x signal bars, you should have a better wireless connection for LTE. But LTE is not active on your nearest site and thus, you're getting signal from a distant one. Give it time and I guarantee that speeds will be better than what you're getting.
You must be getting around a -115dBm value for your current speeds to be that slow. Try downloading CDMA field test and see what the rsrp signal strength is on LTE.
This is my speed on LTE after school today:

Around here in NYC, where Sprint is still building out their LTE network, there are places where I barely scratch 500 Kb/s, places where I get 5 Mb/s, and places where I see 25 Mb/s. It depends on a lot of things, but primarily signal strength. And if your network is still being rolled out, don't expect anything stellar until they finish. There is really no reason to be pissed off. You want the best LTE network out there, Verizon is waiting for you. Want unlimited data and lower price, be patient while the network is being built around you. Sprint LTE speeds are solid in areas where the signal is strong. BTW, the signal bars do not correlate with LTE strength.
