If you are unlocked, don't update, I read that it makes the phone all screwy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in order for him to unlock he needs to accept that update. I think I read somewhere that people were screwing up their phones trying to unlock without that update

At the moment, I am just rooted, sitting with the freegee app in my app drawer, hesitant to unlock because last time it broke my camera. But yep, tried taking the update, it rebooted after about halfway through and didn't update. Great way to get rid of the stupid notification though. But if you are unlocked and try to accept the update, it will fail and you will be bootlooped into recovery, in that, no matter how much you try to reboot, it will always end in clockworkmod. I did just that and had to LGNPST back.

Ur friend is a damn liar. It doesn't work. Maybe he just got passed the startup but it won't work when purchasing stuff

It would take a lot of work. Modify the apk, modify the phone, then modify your ports and proxy. Still wouldn't be very safe and would have to make sure nfc beam was off. For reasoning on this point, just research why most credit cards lost their smart chips. For the lazy, a person of interest may find it a bit easier to get your credit card details if your are broadcasting it.
Now if Google incorporated a little 2 step process, Google it, then maybe it could work. Though I am sure this may prompt certain individuals to start working hard to get access to our Google ids.
For giggles, I tried first and second part. It kept crashing settings.apk. Something with the nfc trying to initialize and at random times killed my radio when trying to connect to Google. Not sure if that had something to do with TMO. Didn't bother looking into it more.
Well it is possible that way but modifying the apk will lead to problems but i just think that we take files from the galaxy nexus gsm and edit the phone like build.prop so instead we trick the apk but we might need to tweak it a little.
Ps I'm not a expert dev or a newbe im in the middle closer to newbee because I'm too scared to root my phone.

[Q] Cannot connect to ATT software update server

Hi all,
I have not been able to get an update since I bought my S3. I keep getting that error: Communication failed. Server is currently unavailable..blah blah..see screenie.
I have seen people post that they got a replacement phone because of this, one person said ATT gave them new sim card and that fixed it. My question is, I am rooted. Should I unroot before visiting ATT? If so how exactly do I do that. How will they know I am rooted? Superuser icon they will see...but is there anything else?
Thanks
It's best to unroot. They will log that data on your phone. I hope your phone didn't trigger the triangle counter.

I've gotten the same error from AT&T since Ive had the first Samsung Galaxy more than 2 years back. Now I have an HTC One, moved to this from and iPhone 5, and wanted to check for an update, surprise surprise, server unavaiable. With the Samsung I remember I had to go to Samsung site, don't remember the exact site, but that is what I had to do to get the Froyo update. Yea, that long ago. Still the same.

Cannot make phone calls or send texts.

So I've restored several backups, hard reset through phone settings, dialed ##72786# to re program phone, updated prl and profile, and finally LGNPST. My 4g data works fine but i cannot get calls texts to work.
When I switch to my gnex calls and texts work like normal. So this is not a network error.
Any ideas? The geniuses at my sprint store are stumped.

I didn't get a chance today to decompile the apk to see what's up but tomorrow I'm going all in see if I can help out. I really like JB with all them qslide apps I want to use it as my daily rom.

And have you toggled airplane mode?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Sometimes the bars show a red x. When there is an x I cannot get data either. Sometimes the x is gone and I get 4g again.
After LGNPST I was able to successfully update profile and prl but it did not fix the problem. I've been able to update profile a few times. After it says the profile has been updated the phone reboots. I've never seen that prior to this.
Oh and the lock screen and notification pull down both say sprint. As if it is connected to sprint service.

well think i found part of the reason, i no longer have a "min" or phone number, as well as my prl went from 25011 to 40000
I took it to Sprint and they could not get it activated either. They said the phone is not recognizing it's meid (I think, he may have called it something else). Luckily I have TEP so they ordered me a new phone free of charge.

Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Do you mean the original couple, or has there been a recent update? I flashed the original, as well as the first update and the 2nd and 3rd kernels(or whatever those zips were). It was strange. Sprint cannot lock the device's radio. It can control whether it or not it has network access, but that would not cause a red X on the signal, just the 3G/4G to disappear. The bars, depending on connection, would still show even if the device was completely deactivated.
To anyone facing this issue, I would get your MSL (if you're rooted, there's an app on the play store) and dial ##786#, press menu key, reset to defaults. Unlike ##72786# which only resets network connection, this will reset your phone to default settings in case it is a software issue causing this, and it will also initiate a handsfree activation, in case the issue is network-related. Yes, your phone will be completely reset, so back up your stuff now if you keep precious items on it. I'm thinking pictures/video/media should be ok, but I would back them up or move them just in case. I do not want to be held responsible for your lost pictures

Yes, I was rooted and running wicked and the camera never crashed once on the stock rom. However, that does not mean that rooting or the wicked rom itself caused the camera problems. After flashing back to original firmware my camera problem remains. I chalk it up as a hardware issue. My new on got here today and im unsure if I will root it just yet.

What will T-Mobile do if they find out if I'm rooted?

I need to take my phone up there because the phone is having problems with the battery and I've done everything I can. I have insurance on the phone and also have Android JB 4.1.2 and I'm rooted. Is there anyway to hide it or should I even care?

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

You could even try to temp unroot if you think that's all you'd need to do to hide it.

I like the features I get with my stock build, but I'm considering a root for better control over my apps, (Greenify, permission control) so this thread seems like a relevant question.
Is Triangle Away and unrooting all it takes to make it appear that I haven't done anything?

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.
