Beginner here that's catching on fast but still a little wet behind the ears. I want to partition my sd card does this sound about right I'm %100 percent on the ext2 size I want it 1024mb I have a 32gig sd so space isn't an issue. What I'm not sure about is what size I should make the swap right now I'm thinking 160mb. Please help I'm planning on doing this tonight before I gotta wake up for work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also what is ext2 to ext3 option is it needed what does it do?
Also I'm running cm6.1 stable
using ra-recovery
I run a 64mb swapfile and 1.5gb ext3 partition. Personally speaking I would not go past 512mb on swap. Really even 64mb is overkill imho as our evos don't really use it much if at all.
As far as ext2 vs 3 its personal choice. Ext3 adds journaling extensions and ups the file size limit.
Thanks for the quick advice you the man!
How the hell did you get it to a2sd to work? I've tried all methods I can find in the forum, but still installs to internal memory.
The developers thread really helped me out.

Yeah I tried that twice. I am loading stored apks, from my computer, does this only work when downloading from the market or what? I've tried every method I could find in this forum, with no luck.
To load apks from your sd card you must go to menu/settings/applications/ and make sure unknown sources is checked.
Also you should be running the latest version of a2sd for everything to work properly. I run myns warm 2.2 rl4 and while it is a fine rom, it is missing the latest a2sd and busybox.
After you have flashed the latest a2sd zip, you should move ALL apps to INTERNAL memory and THEN go to your android terminal and
/su
a2sd reinstall
Space is limited. (at least the space in our phones)
so I always read about apps2sd, data2sd, link2sd. I'm confused about how all they work, which ist best way to go. the information to read is very diffuse so don't blame me if I open a thread to understand the backgrounds.
So, I installed an app called App2SD (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&hl=de) and moved supported apps to SD.
Now there I have root, I want to get to know about alternatives. So what are the methods out there, what to stick to best?
thanks for your help in advance.

I prefer link2sd based on practical experience with all three methods.
I find it the most customizable and fastest although unlike the other two it's not a set it and forget it solution it allows for some definite benefits in terms of file placement and speed.
data2sd and data2whatever tend to bog down over time for some reason where as link2sd keeps up to speed. Lot's of nice features and a great user interface as well.
It's also easily reversible if you don't like it. I can't say the same for the other two.
Here's a link to the original developer's thread and a little tutorial.
Same, Link2sd never worked for me haha
just installed link2sd, after a lengthy process getting stock rom back from a bad CM7 experience....now have a happy healthy stock rom, perm rootedm with link2sd and virtually all apps on the 2nd sd partition. i've basically gone through the "my apps" list on my market account and "linked" everything that's on the market, and kept the rest (pre-installed/not available on the market?) on the internal memory.
internal mem is reporting 108mb free, and i have a little under 1gb on my sd's 2nd partition.
so far so good...touch wood....fingers crossed
so yeh, i'd vote for link2sd.....it also does seem fairly "automated" to me....whenever i download a new app, it automatically links it and moves it to the 2nd partition (although you can manually move it back to internal if you get roblems with a specific app).
Installed Link2SD now. I like it. thx +1 for you 2
I'd like to know how Data2SD handles over time. Using a single file seems a little monolithic but if it works you can't argue with results.
Haven't anyone tried S2E? It's completely automatic and you don't need to set up anything.

Hey Dan,
I've never heard of the app, but a quick google search suggests it's made primarily for CM7. Link2SD does work well for the most part so I think it would be foolish to jump into something else. I've not seen the battery drain that some people have complained about too. The only real alternative for those trying to avoid custom ROM's is Data2SD, which I've heard mixed reviews about.

Link2SD works fine except for the fact that some apps like maps and gmail cause problems when moved..
And when I start up my phone (no fastboot) it always says low internal memory and then Link2SD starts to link all apps which gives me about 60MB free space
mattio,
gmail causes problems? ive not observed a problem with gmail as of yet, what kind of problems?

Hi,
what is the ext that you have on the 2nd partition?
I have ext4 and the Link2SD don't recognize the 2nd partition.
Cump,s
I've been using Link2SD ever since I started using CM. It has been working well for me. No issues with Gmail or Maps. Even my home screen app and keyboard are on the external partition. I just set CM to always keep the home screen in memory. The SD partition is formatted as ext2 because I don't see the need for a journaling filesystem (ext4).
Edit - to contribute to the original question.
I'm not so sure about the other options but I can explain a bit about Link2SD.
Basically what it does is move your application files to the external partition and then create symlinks where those files originally were. Symlinks are tiny files that arejust pointers to where the actual files are. The good part is that the OS does not care. It just sees the symlinks as the actual files. Seeing that it is the actual files that are symlinked, means that you can fine tune it to your needs... as opposed to linking whole directories or mounting a partition to something like/data/app/.

That's normal, some apps don't tell the internal memory that they were linked to the SD card.
Simply turn your phone off (hibernate) and turn it on again , this should give you the additional free memory
Link2SD
I've tinkered with Data2SD and A2SD also but just don't understand how they work. Wasted time restoring my SD card after wiping it out. Link2SD works perfectly but I see some ROM photos showing a ton of free internal space and can't seem to figure out a way to get that little bit of extra space.

Try these steps:
1) Using Link2SD uninstall all the stock htc application that you dont like and dont need ( Most of them can be removed without any problem -> All widgets, google search, twitter, facebook , facebook for htc sense, plurk, htc likes, htc hub, xms ebuddy, stocks and many more, i forgot the names ).
You can always backup these using titanium backup if you are apprehensive.
2) Backup every application , contact and sms on your phone because we will cleanout our phone.
3) Now when you are ready boot into recovery and clean Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache. If possible also backup your sd card and format both fat32 and ext2 partitions .
4) Reboot and install Link2Sd, Mount ext2 partition and setup to link your files ( from settings ) then reboot and freshly install everything. You will find a hugh difference in internal memory
---------------------------------------------------------
I had 80mb internal memory free with 52 application installed, I did the above things and now i have 110mb free space with 60 apps installed which also includes updates of the remaining stock applications. However after doing all this dont move anything to sd card using your a2sd or applications will get corrupted

Hi there,
I have successfully rooted and tweaked my Wildfire a few weeks ago and did some fine tuning since then (a lot to be honest).
XDA Developers has been a great help (obviously) but I got stuck at a few points.
There's especially one thing I'm a bit confused about: there seem to exist mainly four methods/ways to gain more internal memory:
re-partition the system, cache and data partitions
use Apps2SD (CM7)
use Darktremor Script
set up an ext partition on the SD card and move apps there (different methods)
Some of them could be used in combination.
I've read and experimented a lot but - as I said - I got stuck and a bit confused so I'll ask here for opinions/hints and probably a bit more clarification.
As you can see in my specs below I've already adjusted my internal partitions. Although I've gained a lot more space with that and being very selective which apps to install I don't feel lucky with my 312Mb.
My questions:
What would you choose to gain more space on the phone? Making an ext partition on SD or simply use CM7s built in Apps2SD?
I've read here about "S2E" - is this a good solution to work with an ext partition?
Any suggestions/hints/experiences?

Well to me it seems you already have your answer.
I personally use custom mtd settings of 145 10 and use absolutely no sd partition or a2sd what so ever. I've got quite a few apps but my internal memory has well over 200mb remaining.
In my opinion partitioning or moving apps etc just makes your system work a little harder but when using just the internal memory even with custom sizes seems to work best for me.

Well, in more detail I have quite a few apps I don't use very often - but I want to have on my phone for some reason. At the moment my free space is around 40-60 MB and I have the feeling that performance slightly went down a bit over the past weeks... (might be subjective though)
But anyway: that kind of honest opinion is exactly what I'm after, so thnx for your answer

Hi,you can use any of the methods you've stated in conjunction with the mtd ,the reason I don't use any apps to SD mods is due to 2 things.1.I have enough space left internally so not needed. 2.although it's very slim the chance of something corrupting in sdcard would simply cause errors for the apps moved to SD so my paranoia strays me from using any a2sd mods etc.I did in the past used dt app2sd and it worked fine.obviously if you are getting so low on memory even after the mtd then you might be best moving some of the lesser used apps to SD. In this case I personally would try the cm7 built in method . Others may differ but this is my opinion.
Ot. The scrolling cache removal in erwinp and cobje latest builds does not play nice on my phone but others are reporting scrolling improvement so I think it may be hit and miss for the benefits.
Anyways hope you find the method which works best for you.
Regards Slymobi.

I was using mtd partition and dta2sd while on cm7, they work fine together. Just make sure if you use them both to do the mtd partition before installing dta2sd.
The amount of internal storage you have (or don't have) is probably not the cause of your system being sluggish, its most likely what is running in the background, yes the built in taskkiller does a good job but the more apps you have the more it has to do to keep things smooth
I recommend an app I use called autostarts, its better than a taskkiller as it'll stop all the apps that you don't want running in the background constantly starting then being killed then starting again.........

Well, I thought I should complete the thread with my (ongoing) experiences:
Due to the fact that I've been really short on internal storage lately I've decided to give an ext partition on SD a try.
After stumbling over the really sweet & simple sounding "S2E" app I've been a bit shy to give it a go because the last (& rare) posts here @XDA dev about user experience with the app are not very fresh. But after having some issues like another member described here my latest tweaks & changes were lost anyway so I've decided to give it a try while doing everything from scratch anyway.
I'm happy with it so far - all apps on sd-ext now, I'll probably try out (with doing two nandroid backups before...) to move the dalvic cache also but I'm uncertain with that at the moment LOL

very nice - that's what I've been looking for: preventing all those apps from constantly starting up without need - thx
Next step done: moved the Dalvic cache over.
I'm pretty much satisfied so far. Everything runs smooth, stable and fast.
In numbers: Around 120 apps (100Mb) and dalvic cache (90Mb) on sd-ext, app data left on internal memory. Around 190Mb internal memory free (of 300). More than 100Mb of free RAM @ 15-20 processes running.
So far - so good. I'll watch this a while (and guess what?: I got married to a second wife, her name's "nandroid"...)

For the EXT size yes, for the swap size I'm not sure if I configured an ext swap partition at all (I'm not sure if this is necessary with s2e - thought it just needs the partition and does the rest itself...)
Also make sure that you read the warning about moving app DATA to ext, too. I even didn't try to do so...
What I've also done is setting the SD card cache to 2048KB - you can do a speed test with SD tools and set the optimal cache with SD booster.

You allocated 1024MB for Ext coz you have got 8GB Card.
Mine is 2GB so what should be the Ext size for it ?( 256MB or 512 MB would not be enough ?)
What should it be ? Ext2 or Ext4 ?
According to this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432459
“Choose Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 for partition type based on whether your kernel supports Ext4. If it does choose it! If you don't know choose Ext2 to be safe.”
Yes I am done with Custom MTD Partitions.
You didn't try to do "what" ?
What’s up with this “swap” partition ?
It’s so confusing. Some people claim that “swap” is like virtual RAM and more RAM means a more efficient (and faster) device.
Here are the posts supporting “swap” :

While according to “Cyanogenmod” (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Swap_and_Compcache ) and some member swap doesn’t make any diff .on android devices.
If that’s true and swape is useless then why so many forums going gaga over it on XDA at the first place ???It makes no sense. So bewildering.

Hmm, let me think about it... When I saw your question the first time I thought that I would find it hard to go with a 2GB card. Here's why: I'm really not a music or video fanatic but 2GB are nothing if you have just a few mp3's or videos on your card (specifically your camera pics and videos for example...).
So if you say you don't need that - it should be ok.
For the size you need I could only tell from my personal experience, too:
I don't have much discipline with deleting or transferring unused stuff or garbage from my phone - so I might have a few apps installed I rarely or never use (anymore). But I don't collect apps just for fun also - so I'd say I've installed an average number of apps. 120 to be more specific. That makes 474MB used for the ext partition including installed & system apps and Dalvik cache (128MB).
So if you don't plan to install more than 120 apps, 512MB might work for you - I'd probably stuck with 1024 - even with a 2GB card - to prevent running out of space (what happens exactly when you just don't need it )
What should it be ? Ext2 or Ext4 ?

To be honest: I can't remember exactly but I've read something about possible problems and incompatibilities with ext4. But I'm not sure if I faced that question at all when I partitioned my card with CWM... if so I'm pretty sure that I've chosen ext3 (just in case I'd like to install a different kernel some time in the future)
Following Oleg Krikun it should be ext3 or ext4 for S2E...

Yes it might sound confusing - but there are a few things to consider also besides a simple "do it" or "leave it": More RAM is an advantage if it's true original system RAM which can be accessed fast and handled properly and stable. If you already have a fast processor and much system RAM you might also experience some improvement by using an additional swap partition.
For CM7 - especially on the Wildfire - I pretty much agree with that:
In some applications, this makes it seem as if the application never closed at all. This is not much different from traditional swap, except that Android apps are specially programed to write out very specific information, making Android's Memory Manager more efficient that swap.

But your mileage may vary.
From my experience it's a bit trial and error to find the best setup and config for your phone - you should also know that there are differences between identical devices sometimes.

I've try also to do an hard reset and fully wipe/factory reset (from recovery) and for a while it seems to works, but if I install some apps the problem come back.
Why? What can I do?
A friend suggest that maybe there are some directory in filesystem from older app (now unistalled) and, since I haven't root permession, I can't remove them. With root permission can I fix it?
Thanks!
I flashed a custom rom on my desire which used the sd card as internal storage. Problem solved.

Read this guide to s-off, and install a custom recovery
Use this guide to create a 1gb ext4 partition on your sd card. No swap.
Download a custom rom from the htc desire dev section and flash it. I would recommend milwilds redux rom. It will automatically install apps to the parittion and you will have space.
thanks for reply!
I'd like to fix this problem without flash new rom, eventually with root only. It's possible?
When I bought this there was space enough, why now I haven't? Factory reset does not erase all partition and sistems directories?
Thanks!
Also, before you flash the Rom, best to flash recommended hboot if necessary, read the first post or search each thread.
This way you use your internal memory more efficiently.

Factory reset only deletes user data.
When you bought it, you didn't have apps installed, and probably apps were smaller back then.
What are you trying to say? That you want to flash a stock rooted ROM?

Nope.
All my apps were installed somewhere in filesystem (maybe in /system?). My question is: when I do a factory reset, what I'm going to erase? Only user data in user directories, or all content of every system directory? (of course, not system files).
I'm only trying to understand why when I bought the phone I've a "lot" of space for my app and now, after a factory reset, I've not enough free space to install more then 2/3.
Example: I wipe/fr, reboot and config the phone; then I try to install Ruzzle (16Mb),Whatsapp (9Mb) and FB(18Mb). Now if I try to install any other apps I get the alert message of free space. Same error if I try to record a video or take a photo.
I think there is something wrong..
I hope that you can read and understand what I'm writing, my english is a little rusty

A factory reset will wipe /data, dalvik cache and /cache.
When did you buy your phone? I remember that, when I first bought my Desire, facebook was only 8mbin size, and moved to sd, it only took 2 mb of internal memory. Plus, large apps require large dalvik cache. That's why your memory gets filled so easily.
You can resolve easily and keeping your stock ROM (but you'll need a FAST microSD card, my 32GB is class 10):
1) Root and s-off your device
2) Format your microSD with an EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 partition of 1GB, then the rest as FAT32 (you can do it directly from phone using the 4ext recovery, or you can format the card from PC using a tool for partitioning which supports linux formats... I don't know if I can mention names in this thread).
3) Install INT2EXT or INT2EXT+ from recovery.
4) You'll have 1GB internal memory with no out-of-space problems.
That's all
Stock kernel doesn't support ext4 nor ext3, use only ext2 if u want to keep it.
Anyway, I believe that supernova ROM would be a much better option, it's basically stock GB made by HTC with some tweaks and script for more space.
Thanks for replies!
I still do not understand why I've no memory for apps after a factory reset; if I wipe all data, I restore all space, like when I bought the phone. Ok, apps are bigger than 2 years ago, but not so bigger that with 3 apps I occupy all space!
Anyway I'm considering to upgrade to a newer version; if I must give root permission, install tools, repartition sdcard and so on, I might as well to flash a newer version.
Curiosity: are there filesystem directories that are not intrested from a wipe? Differently, which directories will not wiped during a factory reset?
Thank you very much!

yes what your seeing is caused by the apps being a lot bigger now. Facebook is a lot bigger.
And its impossible for your apps to be going to system. You'll have to root and use a2sd

I've install over 40 apps until this problem, including big app like FB.. strange things...
So, how much memory I have?
Rom 4.x for desire has a different partitions? If I just flash a new rom (like 4.0/4.1), will I fix this problem?
Thanks!

You need a rom with an a2sd script, regardless of it being GB, ICS or JB.
Good, I will search in subforum for a new rom.
Maybe it's a bit OT, but JB rom are stable enough for daily use? Can you suggest me a JB rom with a2sd script? (or even ICS, if JB is not stable enough).
Thank you!
I use jb as a daily driver. The ROM in my sig is the most stable jb ROM I've tried. It has very few soft reboots and has decent speed. It also has a2sd. (Activated through terminal after flashing rom)
However if you really need stability, speed and reliability I would highly recommend using gingerbread. Mildwilds ROMs are great and most of them have an a2sd script as well, which is automatically activated. Try the one based on redux.

I have a similar problem to this. I own a HTC Desire that is rooted, with Clockworkmod recovery environment, and I got it running Cyanogen mod 7.2.0.1.
So I was reading around this problem, and there are several solutions. It seems the most foolproof way is to format your SD card and partition it so that you have an EXT3 partition, and a FAT32 partition as has already been suggested here.. This way you can use an app to fool your phone into thinking that it has the EXT3 partition of the SD card to use for internal storage as well as the 150MB of internal storage it comes with. I had an 8GB SD card so I did a split of 2GB for the EXT3 partition, and 6GB for storage of music, photos, etc. etc. I followed this handy guide to do it, and it worked a treat: (sorry, have been unable to post an external link as I'm a new user.. maybe I can post this later).
When I rebooted my phone, sure enough, it showed 2GB+ of internal storage, and I can install all the apps I want. However, I'm experiencing apps hanging and crashing all the time, and I know it was caused by this most recent change. Prior to this, Cyanogenmod was running just fine! I've read a bit more into since doing this, and a lot of people reckon you shouldn't use more than a 512MB SD card partition, as anything over this causes performance issues. Others disagree, and think that anything 2GB or below should be fine. Presumably the apps hanging/crashing is because there is fragmentation of data between the SD card EXT3 partition and the actual 150MB internal storage.
It's frustrating, as other than this the phone is still a very decent handset despite it's age... it's really the storage letting it down. Before I try factory resetting (again!) and going back and trying a 512MB partition, (or just going back to having only 2 apps installed!), has any one else had experience of this?
Any help very much appreciated.

well,I don't use gingerbread anymore.but I can say that you can't experience a good performance to use both internal and external (sd-ext) partitions to use and install your apps. better choice is to use one of them.use default a2sd of rom,or use another script to install apps only in sd-ext partition. I have used and tested a lot of roms (GB-ICS-JB) and I can say in my experiences, that you don't have problem to use an sd-ext partition with about 1.5 - 2 gb size.you can see the recommendation of devs in first post of topics, and they tell us what is the minimum-maximum size for the best performance. sorry,i can't search and give you the links, but I just had a really good smoothness and speed with some scripts that you can try them: like mounts2sd, ad2sdx,... you can find link of them with search. and you can use cm7 int2sd version...but it has a bigger size than normal cm7. here is this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357257
@kmanpilkers
Which guide did you use to partition, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery.
-Ext4 should also be slightly faster than ext3.
-Anything up to 2gb is sufficient. Don't know where you read about limiting it to 512mb. The whole idea is to be able to install more apps on the partition, 512mb will fill up a lot quicker than 2gb...
-you can use space more efficiently by s-off and changing hboot, so you have more than 150 MB of internal. You are currently on stock hboot and have a lot of free wasted space on your /system partition
-depending on your Rom, stick with a single a2sd script, it may be built in or need to be activated, read the Rom thread. Then let it do it's job to move apps to the partition

Thank you. I've been searching for some time
Hello everyone,
I know I'm pretty new here but I have been digging these forums for a few days right now.
I recently bought a faster 16 GB SD Card and rooted my phone to install bigger and other ROM.
But I found verry little info (maybe I didn't looked has much or at the right place) about the swap space you can create in your sd card.
What I read was that it was usefull for the system but when I look at the differents ROM thread they never or very rarely talk about a needed swap place in the sd card partitioning.
Right now I created an ext4 partition with a little bit more than 1gb and a swap with +- 400 mb.
So my question is, is it really usefull or no?
ps: sorry for my english

As far as I know, there are vrey few ROMs that require swap partition. It is usually requested in the first post of the ROM's thread.

Ok, thanks !
I will re create my sd card then
Well after a few rom tested I'm not so sure about this...
Ok they never talk about swap space. But the general problem I have when I install a big rom with Android 4.x is that the memory is always full.
Therefore the phone becomes extremly slow when I launch a few applications.
The only solution I found is to install an app to manage the RAM and free some space. But even with this, I need more ram as it's almost alway full.
I will try with a swap of 512 Mo but I have no idea how other people can manage this.
If anyone have a tip about this, it would be great .

If you use the native a2sd scripts that come with 4.x ROMs, then that's your problem. Those scripts only move data/app to sd-ext, leaving the rest on internal. Most of the memory is occupied by dalvik cache.
This script should also move dalvik to ext. Try it.

Don't forget to backup first.
I never used a swap partition. I think there's no need for it.

Thanks for your anwser but right now I'm using this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213033
And I already moved dalvik and data to sd in the installation. I tried every option there, only data, only dalvik and both. Only both is working.
But this doesn't change the RAM used (or maybe it's not so important that the RAM becomes full?)
I also tried other 4.x rom and moved everything but at some point I think there is too many info in the ram and the Desire becomes really laggy.

creating a 512MB swap partition is pretty much useless as most ROMs don't implement it. It's a redundant partition which could either be used as extra sd-ext for apps or FAT32 space for music etc. It can cause problems as well depending on the order of partitions.
Even if somehow it could be used, it won't suddenly turn the desire into a phone with 1GB RAM...that's not the way it works. In cases where it is used, only a small swap partition ~25-32MB to occasionally swap a few things in and out of memory. Even then whether it actually makes a difference is dubious imo.
I would recommend repartitioning from scratch again, remove the swap partition. You don't need it, and the ROM you're running won't recognise it's even there.
It's laggy not only because of RAM, and can't be solved by magically adding more of it . Android memory works differently as well, so free RAM is wasted RAM, you shouldn't have to monitor how much is free at any given time. A big part of the lag is simply because it's a JB ROM which is simply very resource heavy on the desire relative to GB ones.

Thanks for the informations.
Right now I only have an Ext4 of 1 Gb + 15 gb in Fat32. I didn't had the time to recreate the partitions again. So won't do it.
Well I thought it was a RAM issue because without the ram manager app some functions becomes hard to load like.
If I receive a call the phone rings but wait some time before loading the info to display about the call.
Or if I want to answer an sms the keyboard takes time to load.
Same thing with the apps.
With the ram manager it generally loads faster but some time it gets buggy because there is too much work to do to free space (I suppose).
Well that leave me not alot of options about the capacities of the phone .
Maybe just go back to 2.3.x
