[Q] Cell Data Issue with 2 Apps - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

The NY Times and Wells Fargo apps on my Note 2 won't work will the cell data connection. Either the progress indicator spins endlessly or they report there's no connection to the internet. I use both these apps on a Galaxy S3 and they work fine. If I switch the Note 2 to WiFi the apps work fine.
Has anyone else seen these or other apps not work with the cell data connection?
Thanks

Wells Fargo works for me. I use opendns for dns server so don't know if that would make a difference.
Update
Yo I can confirm when using opendns set through rom toolbox is what is letting me through. When I disabled it I could no longer access it. After I enabled it again I still had to reboot to get it to work again.

This must be something that happened recently because I've used the wells fargo app on here before and it worked fine. Just tried and it just stayed on signing in. Maybe they're having a hiccup somewhere

Thanks both of you for checking, now I won't go mad trying to debug it.

The WF app just worked for me over LTE, and I was able to mobile deposit even.

Wells Fargo is still not working for me, but there was an update to the New York Times app today which fixed the problem. The notes said it affected "a small number of users". Why is it I'm generally in the "small number" for problems, but not in the lottery
Since my original post I've also noticed Flipboard will occasionally claim "no internet" and refuse to update. Hopefully that and WF will both be cured by updates.

[Q] Market server errors?

Both my wife and I (both on Fresh 3.1.0.1) are getting server errors trying to access android market tonight. Anyone else having this problem? Tried rebooting, tried routing through wifi, neither helped.
Just flashed king's kernel 4 and i'm seeing the same market issues.

EDIT: nvm, seems to be the local tower plus market refusing to go thru wifi. Sorry.

Yes. I'm getting it too. What did you mean about the towers and refusing wifi?

Edited OP. 3G here is spotty, so I thought it might be that market refused to go thru wifi for some weird auth-related reason. I wasn't seeing packets going thru the router, at least. But I turned off wifi, verified that I was able to route packets thru 3G, and still no market.

Gotcha. I do hope they fix it soon. There's nothing worse that being bored and wanting to browse apps. It's funny because I normally don't browse much on the app store. Maybe it's my fault
theres a all around problem with the market for the last hour or so i just tested both my Evo and a old Samsung Moment laying around the house and both are having the same problem.(Also my Evo's Rom is the stock rooted 2.2)
I just flashed a new ROM and thought something was bad. Good to know it's not just me.
Same here.

same here fellas!!
It got me too, hopefully it's just some maintenance, although the least they could do would be to post a notice
It seems to be back up. However, I can't find some apps, and it's not showing free apps in the list anywhere near the top when I search (e.g. my wife just searched for "clock" -- she wants a new clock widget). I'm hoping this is a temporary problem.
Actually I'd really like to be able to filter to get just free apps on a search, but, no go on this.
I think they are SLOWLY getting it back up. I don't have top paid tab in my market. Its loading very slow, and a lot of apps are missing. Hopefully it will be sorted out by morning.

AT&T Galaxy S3, what tethering app is everyone using?

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.
Elixir 2
Foxfi here. It works great on my unrooted phone.

Easytether
When I used to tether with an Iphone att noticed it right away and sent me automated messages... Can they also detect tethering with Android??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.
i use FoxFi on my unrooted Galaxy S3.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

Good call on Elixir 2. Works really fast on an non-rooted Galaxy S III
Foxfi worked perfectly for me up until this latest OTA update and now it won't work at all. Was using Power Toggles to activate it, but this is no longer working. I've been searching for a working replacement for the last few days without any luck so if anyone has found an app that works after the update I would greatly appreciate you sharing the name. Thanks!!
I use wifi tether on a rooted S3. It works pretty well. It has similar options to that of a router.

So what app were you using when you got caught? Rooted?
I use the built in CM10 tether.

He was using the built in tethering feature of CM9, which is also part of stock Android.
I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Was working...
Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Weird problem with connectivity

The other day I was trying to log into Facebook app...didn't work. Tried using dolphin to log on..didn't work. Used my bimmer post app..that was OK. Gmail doesn't work..using dolphin to log into yahoo news worked. Hotmail is a no go..a lot of random sites would work though. Using WiFi everything is OK. Yesterday everything worked like normal and then today back to random connectivity. Oh I get notifications from those apps just can't launch them. Any ideas?

u have droid wall or android firewall installed? adfree?
sounds to me more like a problem with your ISP then your phone, does the problem ever occur on 4g? what about if you have even spent a extended amount of time at a friends or family's home where they have wifi as well. it could be your router at home. I remember I had a Belkin router that just didn't like my phone and once I got rid of it, I immediately saw more reliable connections over wifi
No firewall or anything of the kind installed. Problem doesn't happen with WiFi..it only happens connecting to mobile data. I tried pulling battery and sim card and that worked. I'm experiencing it again so gonna try doing that. I pulled only the sim out and problem still there. Facebook won't connect but xda app connects. That's how I'm posting this now. Its weird that certain apps and sites will connect while others won't.

on a secondary re-read I almost guarantee that's a DNS issue. Do u maybe have a social networking only data plan, or a data plan with certain restrictions perhaps?

Anyone using Proxpn on t889?

I've been looking into Proxpn (vpn) premium. They offer a free tier, but it's extremely limited. So I wanted to try the premium. However, I'm seeing some people say that it screws up their Google services. I assume since everything is encrypted, it looses location services etc.
Thoughts?

I have OpenVPN on my VPS in Los Angeles and I connect to it with phone and have not had an issue with Google Services. I did when I connected to my old VPS in Moldavia, it actually was in the UK first but then the company decided to move my server to Moldavia. I guess when you pay $3.50/month for a server you don't have much say how they provide you service. Moldavia is near Romania and Russia in the Balkans. Can't imagine why Google would have an issue that, one minute my location is in Sunny SoCal, the next in Russia.
I've been using droidvpn and Treve mod with no problems what so ever. They have a free version and you get 100 mb of data a day but you can upgrade to the premium for 4.99 with unlimited data and you can pick from a list of servers and the speeds are actually pretty decent.

I actually signed up for a month with Private Internet Access ( P.I.A) and so far I am very happy with it. I haven't installed the app on my Note 2 yet, because I don't use my Note2 that way. But I have it on my desktop, and I installed it on my T959V (Galaxy S4g). One thing that came up was once I connected to vpn on my mobile device, I got a warning/alert in my Google account/gmail saying that someone from a different I.P was trying to sign into my account, and they(google) prevented it. It asked me to choose 2 selections " Yes , it was me" or "No, it was not me. Change my password" I did neither, I just ignored because I didn't know if I wanted to tell Google ," Hey , I know you need my data to thrive, but I'm encrypting it". Maybe I'm being paranoid though.
Other than that my only issue I had was DNS leaks, which was my fault, and figured out the patch up. So, anyways I think I'll sign up for a full year with PIA.
Anyone have thoughts/opinions?

Same issue here. I called a tmo rep and they "added the free feature to my account" yet every time I hit next at the voicemail setup menu it sits at processing and errors out with a "no response from server". I am on T-Mobile's LTE network with full signal, so that isn't the issue.
***EDIT***
Some additional info:
-Just bought my Note 3 yesterday.
-Just switched from an iPhone 5 (It was lame) that had functioning voicemail
-I have a postpaid simple choice account.
Hopefully we can get this figured out
Hey guys. A lot of things go wrong on T-Mobile bloatware. Just get YouMail from the market. Trust me it will save you so much more time and frustration. I install it on every android I have.
Just tried youmail and got an error saying that my youmail test call has failed every time. This is weird, I'm blaming the iPhone lol
