[Q] 4.2.1 Updating Mishap - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The 4.2.1 update appeared on my phone, so I decided to let it update. The phone rebooted and and entered custom recovery and tried to install the update which didn't work, so I just restarted the phone and it's stuck on the Google screen. I can access the recovery and all but can't reflash a ROM or a backup because they aren't actually on the phone memory but on my computer (stupid I know). I can't access the phone memory through my PC(Nothing appears just a sound signalizing that something was plugged) to copy the ROM or backup to the phone memory.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks,

if u have stock rom, and u update it via OTA, u gonna need stock recovery to update.

I'm assuming you can still go to fastboot mode? What happens if you try to issue -> "fastboot reboot"

I solved it by pushing the rom files using the gnex toolkit. Wiped cache and reflashed the rom. Worked perfectly and I didn't lose a thing.

I just bricked my phone :(

Hey guys hope someone can help me out here. I just updated my phone to the latest OTA Rooted ROM and everything was working fine. Then I used Rom Manager to download the latest Fresh 3.0.?? ROM. When it downloaded it asked if I wanted to backup ROM and wipe data. I checked both on. Then phone rebooted and it wont get past white HTC Evo4G screen. I did vol down and power and I go to Recovey and again it freezes on this screen. I cant access my sd card to put any recovery stuff on the phone. How do I get past this?? This sucks

I had the same issue this morning loading the new Fresh Rom. "Stuck at White HTC EVO" screen. Just do a battery pull to restart your phone and let it boot up normally. It should be able to load after that.
Thanks a lot fuzion. I could have sworn I tried that last night but I guess I didn't. So I guess no Fresh ROM ?? Anyway to get it on ?
You could try loading one of the PC36IMG zips on your sd using an adapter to go back to stock and start over
Well I got my phone back on and working with the 2.2 OTA rooted back the way it was. I go into ROM manager and I made sure to do the ClockworkMod Recovery install. When I turn on the phone with vol down + power I select Recovery it just freezes on the Evo 4g screen. Never takes me to the recovery menu like I used to have. Anyone have any idea why??
Let's do a checklist:
1. Full root including NAND unlock (i.e. NOT Unrevoked)?
2. Installed and re-installed latest ROM Manager, and then latest CWM?
3. Copied Fresh 3.1.0.1 to root of SD card?
4. Booted into recovery using either CWM option or power+volume up?
5. You don't have an old PC36IMG.zip on your SD card, do you?
6. If you can get into recovery, do all your flashing from there, and DON'T FORGET to do data, cache, and dalvik wipes.
7. If all else fails, maybe use CWM to flash Amon RA instead and try that way.
8. If all THAT fails, go back to toast's guides and re-root everything.
Other long shots: Install Titanium Backup and use that to install BusyBox. I have no idea if this would help, maybe it's totally unrelated. Also, you could use an app called Quick Boot to reboot into recovery, but if selecting the reboot option from CWM doesn't work, I don't know why QB would.
And one more thing: Don't be throwing the term "bricked" around when you're clearly not even close to bricked.

Can't boot into phone, seems no way to recover.

Hello I recently messed up my phone trying to get a custom rom onto my phone. (It is a l710 model)
I can boot into Clockwork Recovery and ODIN just fine, but I phone won't start up.
I used GS3 toolkit to root phone and it all worked fine, but then used clockwork to install custom rom.
I want to recover my phone but the only rom on the internal SD is the one that doesn't work.
I have a Nandroid backup I made using the galaxy s3 toolkit, its on the computer and sd card.
However I cannot restore using toolkit since it just waits for the phone to be on and in usb debugging mode to continue
Recovery says "Couldn't open directory" "No files found" when trying to restore backup.
I would try puting another rom on an sd card but it only browses internal storage (internal sd).
I went to mount external sd but didnt seem to help
Not sure if ODIN can do anything...
Don't know what else to try

I tried that but my phone just flashes samsung then the samsung galaxy s III and then turns off (or at least it appears to be off).
Is there a way to restore Nandroid backups with odin?

You can get adb/the toolkit to see the phone. Go into the device manager while your phone is plugged in and booted to recovery. You should see a device with a ! next to it should be your phone. If you manually install the driver the toolkit will see it. Have the toolkin boot you into download mode. If you have recovery Odin mode should be okay, u sure ur holdin "vol down, home, pwr"?
Thanks for your time.
I managed to get it working.
What I did was
1. using odin, reflash the insecure boot thing.
2. reinstall the rom through recovery
3. factory reset
and then is wasnt stuck in a boot loop anymore
after that I could access internal storeage sd.
I had this same issue. After using ODIN Rom would hang on boot animation. Would never boot all the way and I gave it close to 45 minutes. I also found the only way to resolve this issue was doing a factory reset after flashing through ODIN. Im using Vzw model so I guess it is happening cross platforms.

Recent AT&T OTA Update Borked My Note 2

My AT&T i317 Note 2 is rooted, no custom ROM. This weekend AT&T pushed an update so I allowed it and it supposedly completed. The next time my phone rebooted and every reboot every time after the update push, the OS would immediately boot and start "Android upgrade..." again. I got sick of it and wiped my device from CWM Touch Recovery. After doing that, the phone no longer boots up like there's no OS loaded on the phone. It'll hang on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 screen until I pull the battery. Also I'm unable to mount the external SD card via recovery. It just says "error mounting external SD". I've tried 3 SD cards and it won't mount any other them. The external sd card is where I have a ROM stored to load onto the phone. Samsung device drivers installed properly except for MTP drivers will not install whatsoever. No Kies installed. I need to somehow get an OS image on the devices internal memory. Odin detects the device properly in download mode while in download mode. Can I use Odin to sideload a ROM? Never used it to do anything else but root.
From what I understand you cannot do an OTA with a custom recovery, I could be wrong. If you wiped your phone you would not have an OS on your phone anymore. You should read up on how to Odin back to stock and start over. Good luck.

From what you just wrote it seems you wiped your recovery? How thats possible idk.
If you can still get into dl mode try using kies and do the em f/w reset.
Should work.
happened to me, but different state, i accidentally wipe my phone and the rom i was about to flash was corrupted or don't know what happen, if you have a custom recovery, then just push a rom to cwm by doing adb push, worked for me, i'll pass the file of ADB push if you want.

Phone stuck in boot loop

Hello guys,
So basically my phone shut down while I was using the app drawer. And it got into a boot loop. The phone is rooted, and it has Lean Kernel and Paranoid Android 3.6 installed on it. It tried to factory reset, wipe data, wipe cache, basically do everything in the recovery mode, but it still wouldn't boot. So then I formatted the sd card, and everything else there was to format. And now the phone is just stuck on the word Google. I understand (guess) that's because I've formatted the internal memory. How do I get to flash a rom to the phone now? The computer can't seem to get a connection via USB while the phone is stuck on the word Google. Thanks for your help

Just ran in to the exact same problem on my girlfriend's phone. Please help. It turns on and I can get into bootloader mode and recovery but when I go to reboot, it just stays on Google startup screen. I did the same things, formatting and such. The sd card is empty with nothing to flash. Help!
Ok, so I've managed to flash another rom. But it only shows me the boot animation and back to the Google logo...

I tried installing this kernel and this rom. But it still doesn't boot up. It seems that the kernel is installed on the phone, but the rom isn't, because the command line on the phone doesn't actually write Done or anything else, it just sits there for a while doing nothing.
why dont you flash back to stock using fastboot?
Been there and the "Nexus Root Toolkit" by WugFresh really came in handy. Used the software to go back to stock and since then no problem

Via fastboot flash the recovery first and restore from there
and then see..
it should boot up..
or
just flash a stock rom too then.
check the link for stock kernel

Ok, so I'm trying the Nexus Root Toolkit right now to get back to stock. But the log shows that archive does not contain:'boot.sig' , 'archive.sig', and 'system.sig'. The process was finished, and it says that stock was isntalled on the phone, but it still stuck in boot loop. It says in the CMD that it might be stuck in boot loop for 5-10 minutes, but it will eventually boot. But the phone still doesn't. And I've also tried to install each .img file through fastboot using this guide. But it still seems to be stuck in bootloop. I've been waiting for 5 minutes, but I'll keep it on for longer...
Update:
Ok, once it showed that :"apps are updating x out of y" and then it started looping again, and then another time it booted until the place where I could choose my language, aaaand it started looping again.

Well that is a progress
Try to update the recovery using Nexus Root Toolkit. Push the stock ROM using the advanced option and then flash the stock again using recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik cache then reboot.

try to lock your bootloader. if its still unlocked after you reboot your phone, your emmc chip is fried.
Having the bootloop. I've tried the Universal Nexus Tool for Linux and get no boot SIG and recovery SIG error.
I can't get it to boot at all. :/

I locked it with "fastboot oem lock" and after taking out the battery it says that the bootloader is locked. So I guess the emmc chip is fine?
By the way, is emmc memory related in anyway to the Lagfix(fstrim) app that I've got from Google Play to speed up my Nexus? Maybe the problem is somewhere there?
Also, If I'd locked the bootloader and took it to the Sprint store, would they try to fix it even though I had the phone for more than a year?
I've tried everything and still a bootloop. No matter if I recover to stock or flash a custom ROM.

ZE551KL keeps rebooting into Twrp

I was fooling around with my phone and decided to try to update to MM. I downloaded the update to my sd card and fastbooted into stock recovery. I selected apply update from sd card and then selected the update file. It stuck on verifying update package for about 40 minuets at which time I was thoroughly pissed and pulled the battery. It booted into twrp when I restarted it. I selected one of my backups which twrp said was installed successfully. When I reboot it comes right back to twrp every time. what can I do to fix this.
Edit: Twrp is permanently installed on my phone, the use of stock recovery was a one time deal.
My Phone: ZE551KL-ZOOTD
Rooted: Yes
Bootloader unlocked: Yes
You stopped it mid-install... 40 minutes is not a long time. Rule number one of updating firmware, ALWAYS let it finish.
You've corrupted the system and probably boot. You'll need to download and reflash system through ADB.

Twrp is installed on my phone. I used fastboot to temporarily boot into stock recovery using the command "fastboot boot recovery.img" where the stock recovery is in my adb and fastboot folder. After I pulled the battery and restarted the phone it booted into twrp and that is where I am now
The problem has been solved. Apparently Twrp handles the factory reset differently than the stock recovery. I tried the factory reset in Twrp two or three times with no luck. I figured what the hell, before I wipe the everything and reinstall I would give stock recovery a try.
Fastbooted stock recovery, wiped the cache, did a factory reset, and when I rebooted my phone had been magically restored. I don't know how to delete this thread so if the moderators will, delete it. Thanks
hi i have a same problem . im stuck in my twrp . i already have a custom rom. but accidentally wipe my fone using restore factory data after that istuck on twrp.. i dnt have idea what should i do . i already put another custom rom but nothng happens still in twrp after rebooting.. btw im using asus zenfone 2 laser z00ld.. thank you plss help me
Fix for bootloop in twrp
Had the same issue earlier than i came to this simple trick(by experimenting).
Follow the steps:
1. Extract the boot.img from any rom zip file you have.
2. Move that boot.img to memory card and plug that memory card to the phone having reboot problem.
3. Now boot in twrp and click install--> image--> and locate the boot.img file in memory card.
4. Finally select boot option in twrp install screen, and finally slide to install.
Hope it will fix ur problem. Cant post the link. I am new to xda so.
