Hi,
Sorry for being a noob but i came from android phones with sdcards and this is the first time i had one without a sdcard card slot..
the main question is, if i wipe the device, will the content in the /sdcard folder that i transferred via MTP (photos, music, Nandroid backups, etc) be wipe out as well?
I am asking because I swear the i did a wipe yesterday and ALL the content in the phone is gone, including the things i put in the /sdcard folder...
just need to clarify or maybe i am crazy? Please help..
There is no SDcard. Its all one big partition. Doing a factory reset wipes the entire device. Yes your pictures and videos, too.

Yes, the /sdcard folder actually points to /data/media. Doing a factory restore resets the /data partition, including the contents of /data/media. This means everything put in /sdcard will be erased.
That's stupid. Really stupid. I factory reset my phone all the time... Am I supposed to copy everything back over every time... Eh that would suck.
My transformer and G2x had internal memory and a factory reset from clockworkmod didn't touch the internal storage.
Nvbackups would copy everything though.

Instead of doing a factory reset, you could just delete everything in /data except for /data/media. That will achieve the same thing and leave your media data alone.

Yeah if you just wipe your data/cache via CWM it DOES NOT touch anything in your /sd card. However doing a factory reset via the settings menu while booted does!

ok just to be clear, because people (me lol) get confused when people talk about the SD card when talking about the nexus. obviously there isnt one...so im assuming the partition that handles the media is what u refer to as the Sd card...virtual sd card. correct? and if i wipe data/cache via CWM it does NOT wipe my pictures, videos, etc...but if i factory reset under settings while booted...it WILL wipe EVERYTHING...i think i got it now if what i just said was correct...

+1.. all these people are thinking the phone doesn't have a "sdcard." There is a "sdcard" but its more like internal storage. Think of it as a computer,
- Older phones like the G1 rely on the SDCard fully... so this is like running a OS off a USB drive without internal storage (G1 has a little internal storage.. not enough to say that there is one)
- Phones such as Galaxy S1/S2 have a sdcard AND internal storage. What does this mean? It's like a internal hard drive with the ability for external storage (flash drive, sd cards).
Example: Galaxy S2 has 16GB internal storage and expandable storage.
Phones like the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Galaxy Tab is like.... internal hard drives without the ability for expanded storage (unless you USB OTG a flash drive!). This is just a beyond misconception on the scene and this is what they meant by not having a sdcard.
When you do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik... your /sdcard/ IS NOT TOUCHED unless you run a script that says otherwise!
/sdcard/ and all the other folders are treated as two separate partitions!
When you unlock your bootloader and it wipes, that deletes everything, including the sdcard folder.

Super wipe lite from the ARHD thread does not wipe the virtual SD card.
--- This script will erase and format your system and cache partition using EXT4 file-system ---

All your personal files that would be stored in SD Card in other devices which has one, are stored under /data partition, at /data/media/.
The /sdcard/ is just a link to /data/media.
There seems to be special handling in CWM recovery image for Galaxy Nexus when formatting /data partition as it will not touch /data/media. It's nice feature indeed, but you cannot now empty your /data/media content without manual work. But normally you don't even want to do that so it's fine.
It would be much more simple to just forget about the "virtual sd card" or /sdcard, since those are just, well, virtual and makes unnecessary confusion.
So our files are now stored like they would be under C:\Users\media. If you format C-drive, you'll lose your 'personal' files as well from media folder. The "virtual sdcard" /sdcard would be just a similar as Windows has as "Favorite" feature, just a shortcut to a certain folder location.

found this thread searching for an answer, i'll go ahead and ask it right here as it fits the the topic:
what i want to do when installing another rom is to wipe (system) data, cache and Dalvik cache (and i do not want my private files on the sd card to be touched). it is clear to me that CWM does not touch the sdcard partition. BUT: since all the apps are installed onto the sdcard partition they won't be deleted, right?
i want all my apps to be gone and to have a completely fresh new system installed without ANY leftovers from apps or apps/data or anything else that got stored on the sdcard partition while using the previous rom. of course these apps would not be installed anymore when you boot up the new rom, but all their files and folders would still remain on the sdcard partition, right? i'm talking about all those files that the rom generates itself and stores on the sdcard partition. of course i want to keep all my music, downloads, pictures, etc. but i want everything else to be gone.
to my understanding cwm does not touch the sdcard partition which leaves all the app folders and other android-created-files and folders (that were automatically created when using the previous rom) untouched and i would have to manually look for all these files and delete all these remnants which is kind of annoying.
do you know what i mean?

When you clear all your data/cache when installing a new rom it will also wipe apps that have been installed on your sdcard. This does not include removing folders that apps may store additional data on the sdcard. If you want to remove these folders unfortunately you will need to do it manually.

Installed apps do not go in /data/media, but /data/app and /data/data. I dont think /data/cache exists, /data/dalvik-cache does.
Those are only erased if you do a wipe data/factory reset in cwm/twrp, and for the latter wipe dalvik cache.

Sounds difficult. Just adb pull /data/media to your computer and you're good to go...
Flashing a new ROM shouldn't result in you loosing your music.
Only /data /system /cache and /ext-sd get wiped.

if u flash a new rom with the clock work mod recovery, when you wipe data/factory reset it does NOT wipe /data/media (the virtual sd card with ur music and photo)...so u are ok
only unlocking the bootloader, doing a factory reset in the setting menu on the phone, or flash a stock google rom will wipe the virtual sd
Yeah the SD portion should not get wiped when you flash between roms. Only the first time when you unlock does it get wiped, which is why you should unlock on the first day. But I switch roms and my data stays in tact.
How do you keep the offline saved music in the Gmusic app?
Every time I wipe/factory reset, all the locally saved music is gone. It takes forever to sync all the songs again.

if u want do a full wipe, then save the Android/data/com.google.music.. something folder on ur pc

Lets say I have JellyBelly installed and do a backup of it do I have to copy it to my computer if I install another ROM if I don't want to lose it?

No internal sdcard does not get wipe Only your personal info on the rom does (apps, contacts etc...) your internal sdcard remains untouched

I have an Xperia s with a build in sd card. It is called I have a 2 gb part and a 25 gb part where photos and music etc is stored. My cwm backups also get stored there.
Now I would need to do a wipe in recovery, but I was wondering, will this also clear the sd storage? I don't want to lose the backup.

I guess wiping /data partition means it only wipes the phone's built-in internal memory. I don't think it will affect the phone's internal SD card, as its partition is different, if I'm true.
Anyways you'd get more feedback about this in Xperia S Q&A section.

Can anyone confirm the wipe options of newest TWRP ? wipe cache and dalvik cache i know but I am unsure about the "wipe internal storage" and "wipe data" option ? Which option should I choose if i am coming from PA 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 ?
DONT wipe data.. in twrp wiping data will also wipe sdcard.. when flashing roms do a factory reset
Factory reset will delete all the app related data , right ? My contacts, mms , etc will also get deleted ? But the data/media will be intact ?

twrp is alot better than cwm IMO, its faster and it flashes roms better, i am saying this from experiece when i had a s2 i use to have issues with cwm but twrp never let me down..
and most roms wipe system before installing the rom but i wipe it anyway.. this is how i flash ANY rom, even updates of the same rom, and never have issues
1. factory reset
2. wipe system
3. wipe cache
4. wipe dalvik
5. flash rom
6. flash gapps
7. flash AK kernel(optional)
8. reboot
9. wait 10 mins then do another reboot
10. enjoy :good:

Thanks again, for updates for same rom u also factory reset ? That means every time u setup your apps, contact , mms ? That would be painstakingly time consuming .
There are apps that can back up your apps and app data as well as text messages. Its not that time consuming. Some launchers can backup layouts, too, so that cuts down on having to reset your home screens. Contacts can be synced with your Google account, unless I misunderstood the contact comment, so much like your email they are synced when you enter your account details.

This is pretty much the formula I follow.
1) Wipe cache
2) Wipe Dalvik (a little redundant since dalvik resides in /cache)
3) Factory reset
4) Wipe System (like said above, most ROMs wipe /system but I do not anyway)
5) Flash ROM
6) Flash GApps
7) Flash kernel of choice
8) Fix permissions
9) Reboot
10) I immediately install Titanium Backup and batch restore all apps and app data before signing into my Google accounts
11) Reboot back into recovery and fix permissions again
12) Wipe dalvik again so everything is optimized
13) Reboot
14) Set up ROM how you like it.
The other thing I do is copy Nova Launcher into /system/app and get rid of Trebuchet.apk or Launcher2.apk as well as live wallpapers and other things I consider bloat. Nova let's you back up all your configs and settings so I just restore that. I'm usually back up and running in 30 minutes or so, I could pretty much do it in my sleep...

I 100% guarantee you that a factory reset will leave your sd card intact, I do it every day almost. The only way to nuke your internal storage is to wipe data, which nukes /data/media (basically your sd card) and pretty much everything else, or wiping internal storage will also nuke your sd card...

If I remember there are two options in TWRP , one is wipe data and wipe internal storage , so both do the same work , nukes data/media ? So what is the point of keeping both of them ?

Internal storage nukes just the sd card, wiping data nukes all internal storage, sd card, system, etc, if you do that you basically have to flash a stock image with fastboot...

I have never tried the factory reset option with my GNEX, but using it on a Galaxy S or Galaxy Ace definitely erased the entire internal storage. It would als mean the factory reset warning is incorrect. Strange stuff.

If that is the case then I think the nomenclature is pretty confusing and misdirecting ,
factory reset = only app related data and contacts and mms
wipe data = everything including system also
wipe internal storage = data/media.
As far as I know the factory reset option in the rom itself nukes the data/media and app related data also , what in the case for recoveries are different .Wipe data option shouldn't be there in the recovery as it can be pretty dangerous if someone accidentally does it.

If you look at the link that Petrovski80 included, you and he are talking about two different "factory reset"s... on that is part of the Android OS and the other that is TWRP...

If I'm not wrong, wiping data means that u have erased your current ROM, and you need to reinstall a new rom.
