When I rooted my galaxy note 2, I couldnt update it... does that mean I have to unroot it when there is android 4.2 update for my galaxy note 2? ??

Unroot, use triangle away, restore stock recovery if you switched to cwm and factory reset to change from modified to stock

If only haha. Once you unroot, the device still says modified because the binary flash counter has increased from 0 to 1 (or higher). That pretty much tells the phone that your device was modified.
There are a few guides around on how to do it. I can't really search at the moment as Im on my phone.

ok...
So If I want to update with samsung when android 4.2 comes out so I have to use triangle away and also unroot it???
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Thats right. Someone mentioned just downloading the file from www.sammobile.com when its released and flashing that with odin.
Im not sure if that works while rooted but may be worth investigating?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Ok... then...
I'll go check it
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
There is guides in this forum relating to your issue, but basically use Triangle Away, then wipe data/cache and it should change your status, though some say it reverts back to modified after time...
I would just leave it rooted. 4.2 based roms will be available here probably long before you would see it getting pushed to your device by your carrier.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Downloading and installing the firmware using ODIN resolves the issue.

The binary count wont go lower than 1 but atleast the update is working now...

I flash my device with odin mobile pro and factory reset everything...
Looks it looks new
The binary count and everything else is new and official

Who in their right mind would use kies?? Just go to www.sammobile.com and download the firmware from there, why dont you want to odin? What's wrong with it scared of the flash counter or something?

You need to be on completely stock ROM. I used ODIN, it doesn't increase the flash counter when you flash full system. Use it, don't wory

How long did it take to complete the update? Its going on 2 hours now for me. It downloaded the update but the phone has been in dl mode for about an hour and the progress hasn't moved from 0%. This phone is completely stock and has never been rooted, im starting to think its hung up.

I'm trying to unroot my device back to stock since I'm pretty pleased with Touchwiz and want the next 4.1.2 update. I used triangle away to reset the flash counter and then used Odin to install a stock 4.1.1 firmware. However, when I look at device status it still says modified. Can I still get the OTA updates with this and is there any way to fix this and have it say normal?
What count does it say? Does it say count as "no"?

If you still have SuperSU installed in the settings there's and option to do full unroot, that's how unrooted my last gs3 before I returned it. Anyone more experienced please feel free to correct me, as obviously I am still a noob.

It sure is my phone, I don't have a need for it to be anything but stock at the moment so that's how I want it to be.
I have also tried doing the process over again but using the 4.0.4 firmware. Still nothing.
EDIT: Flashed 4.1.1 over 4.0.4 did the trick. Not sure why.

Interesting. It's worth a shot OP. Worst case, it fails and you uninstall. If it is successful, you can install mobile odin, then get the latest gb27 tar, and money. While you're at it, you will have to flash a cwm custom jb kernel, since you're on ics, and, MO won't flash modems, you'll need a jb modem to use data on gb27. Download the zip though of the modem . Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Hopefully it works for you. I don't see why it wouldn't. Might be more complicated but it worked for me. but of course YMMV. Just follow what jdsingle76 said you you'll be good to go.

As the title implies, I'm stuck on a 4.4 ROM and can't get back to 4.3 stock. I've tried using recovery, but it fails or sticks me in a bootloop. Whenever it fails, it says can't mount /preload. I feel reaaaaaaaaaly stupid but I'm stuck. Help?

Philz recovery will backup and restore touchwiz 4.3 properly. Make sure that you use 6.07.09 version the latest 6.12.xx requires a new binary and script changes to install most roms.
