[Q] Small tweak if possible? - KB shortcut button remap? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I try not to ask for help, but unfortunately this one has me a bit stumped..
I started this journey a couple weeks ago by picking up a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2. Needless to say I <3 it.. Shortly thereafter I received an AT&T upgrade and figured my T-Mobile days were becoming limited (REALLY poor service where I live), So I got an AT&T version.
Although I've rooted both and such within hours of them being charged - I've found one (what I want to call BIG) difference, and I hate it.
It's the keyboard when I'm texting. On the Tmobile version the space button is a little smaller, has a comma on the left side, period on the right side and the 'mode' button (handwriting/speech/keyboard/settings) ..
On the AT&T version the space is a little wider, to the right is the . to the left is a single button that expands out to have ,?!' talk, handwriting, settings.. All of these are into this one little button.
With Tmobile the 'magic button' (since I dont know what it's called) - it defaults to the speech/speak now prompt. AT&T's button defaults to handwriting..
I ACTUALLY use the voice version, however I can count the number of times I've used handwriting / spent on 1 hand. Therefore the only thing I really would pray for is to be able to get the Tmobile note 2 Keyboard layout on the ATT note 2
Background: Both phones are setup exactly the same, with the exact same settings etc.. Just stock roms etc, rooted w/ CWM..
See Screenshots

Wow that is strange. Do you use the number keys at the top? If not you could try out the 4.2 stock keyboard. You could also try copying the "SamsungIME.apk" from "system/apps" from the T-Mobile N2 and onto the AT&T N2.

Well I went ahead and copied both the apk and the opek?
Anywho what that did was it made the 'smart' button turn into the comma.. Better than before (since I dont use the handwriting in texts etc).
The space button is still large as in the difference between the ATT/TM versions.
Also - yes I do use the numbers, since i have many alpha-num passwords it's quite handy not having top flipflop between the regular keyboard and 'sym' to be able to get to the numbers.
Hrmm any other magic files to copy? =)
I'd really just love to have the keyboard from the TM version instead of the ATT version.. Sounds easy but I have no clue where it would be hiding..

I'm going to try it without the odex this go around, will post the results.. Im thinking that may have something to do with it still being different..
I dont know a whole lot about the guts of android programming so I'm going to wing it till I get it where I like it..
If I didn't have to worry about the bloat and other stuff from TM, i'd almost flash the TM version onto it, then flash the ATT modem? /shrug,, however I do really did the I7105 international firmware,, it's fairly nice but i've had a few bugs with it.

Welp - just odex free didnt help at all..
I did however install the TM image which isn't too bad, put the ATT rom on it, and i'm ALMOST where I want it to be..
Somehow the samsungIME.apk/odex isn't all I'm looking for..
Does anyone know what other files control the keyboard layout / keys etc on these?
(Would love to run international 7105 w/ Tmobile key layout =)

Seeing as you have both phones, you're in an ideal position to compare the config files and see what parameters are different.
The general concept:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988202
I am guessing - GUESSING - that the solution lies in what is different between the two phones in here:
/system/usr/keylayout
(The layout files are all text files.)
Good luck!

I finally got the chance to disect the directory you mention.. Unfortunately the files are exactly the same from what I can tell by looking at each file side by side.
Also copying the whole directory over changed nothing - which further supports said theory in case I overlooked something.

GOT it!
Root Instructions:

Once rooted, use ES with Root Explorer - change the / and /system to r/w first
Copy /system/crc/feature.xml to your computer, edit with notepad.
copy the feature.xml to /system/crc (rename the old one)
Changes to feature.xml:
<CscFeature_Email_UseFixedBgColorAsWhite>false</CscFeature_Email_UseFixedBgColorAsWhite> (Changed to false)
<CscFeature_Sip_DefaultMultiModalKeyAs>VOICE</CscFeature_Sip_DefaultMultiModalKeyAs> (Changed to VOICE)
The second change was what set the button to go to voice instead of HANDWRITTING. That's what I was looking for!

I chose to go with a custom ROM for my N2 (AT&T) and I grieved the loss of my Sammy Keyboard. Once you move to custom, the keyboard is standard or aosp android. i never liked the Android keyboard layout, even though it;s functionality ran circles around Sammy.
To cut to the chase, their are some reasonably priced key boards in the Play Store that run circles around both Sammy and Android. I use Swift, which seems to be the current leader in sales and ratings. Swipe is another one that I hear a lot of people like and it is a third of the price of Swift. I think Swift is worth what you pay for it, even though I still like the layout of the Sammy better.

had this phone for a week and have some questions

I just sold my sensation and got this phone..so far it is working out but there are some things I am trying to figure out. Yes i know i can root it but was thinking about holding out on rooting until the next firmware push so i can get the wifi calling option. I believe in time it will be in a cooked rom but until then this is kinda my plan...so here are my questions.
1: I notice the menu fonts are a lot bigger than on the sensation. Any way to make it smaller so i can fit more on the screen. I am reffering to line when you are in the settings and scrolling all the options like wifi, sound, display, etc
2: anyway to change up the power options to include a reboot option?
3: you know how you can pan left and right and setup dif screens. on the sensation for the text messages there was a nice large widget which would display several texts conversations. how to get that back so i don't have to hit the icon to get to the large display
4: same as #3 but when it comes to the gallery for pics
5: what same as #3 but for the music playing options
6: the market update is driving me nuts. I don't want the new one and i will use the old one and then it updates. I will go into applications and uninstall the update and then next time i use it it updates. Where can i uncheck something so it will leave it on the old market?
7: why when i take a pic with the flash sometimes on the screen when it take the pic with flash it will wash it out on the screen and shows as a crap pic but when you go to the gallery the pic is fine?
8: anyway to change the application icon content to scroll up and down versus side to side a screen at a time
9: any other keyboard options for texting, etc?
10: any different dialer you all suggest?
thanks for any info
Sounds like you should've kept the sensation...
Maybe you can look around the rom section and find a rom that fixes some of your "issues".
A new font may fix the font size issue. The rest, idk. As I'm ok with all the rest.
you would think based on my questions but there was no way overcoming the issues with the sensation. speakerphone sucked bad ...could not hear a thing...bad design and was no overcoming that. camera app was also terrible...so i made the right choice just customizing it to fit me...

2- get a rom and those reboot options are in it and in toggle options too.
5- get google music and a rom and thats fixed too
6- get Titanium backup and get the donators copy not the free one, with the paid copy u can freeze items. Once u get to the market u want go into titanium backup and look at ur batch list and freeze market updater, DONE! And it will stay i used to do that when i had themed markets.
8. I use zeam launcher and it lets u pick which directions u want ur icons to show also if u fix permissions in root u can get transparent app list BUt also in zeam launcher settings without doing that u can make it transparent also if u dont want to go the first route.
best keyboard options swype or swiftkey!
hope that helps
9. You can search for keyboards on the android market. There are some really nice ones out there. I hated the stock keyboard and am using iphone keyboard emulator at the moment
Did the same
I did the same I had a Sensation and due to a kid breaking his phone I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 2 and thought my wife was going to take it. Instead she said she wanted my sensation! Me being a good guy I let her have it. (my wife is hot, what am I to do?) I use to have a Vibrant and was really not looking forward to what I got myself into but to my surprise things actually worked for the most part! Between the wife and I we have gone through the G-1, Vibrant, MT3G Slide, Sensation and now the TMSGS2 and I must say it is hands down the best phone I have owned to date. So if you really like Sense and like to almost hear your music and videos then go back to the Sensation or get the Amaze. I hated Samsung after the Vibrant experience but looks like they just won me back as a customer because this is a great phone!!

New Swype Beta

Don't know if anyone mentioned before, least haven't seen one. A new Beta for Swype is out. Found it while reading in GSMArena blog. Using it. Not bad. Swype lovers should try it.

Swyping from my i9100 via Tt
Fairly early days in terms of my usage of it, but definite signs of improvement on what was already an indispensable tool. Seems quicker and slicker somehow. Haven't really been able to test out the word prediction facility yet.
They say it has a fresh new look, but it looks the same to me.

Perhaps true in the sense that it is still a keyboard but the size, colour and styling are both different - not radically, but somewhat.
As a matter of interest, you did enable Swype Beta, didn't you? For whatever reason the beta and the original both show as installed. You won't see the new look unless you enable the beta.
Can someone report the actual version number of this please, as I'm not sure if this is the version I already have installed
I have: 3.26.92.38965.38973.10637.I9100
Just installed it, it feels... bigger, the new Swype. I'd rather it be slightly smaller.
Also I noticed some new effects when you let go (it like shrinks and fades out) after swyping and it also seems to run a bit faster.
My version is 1.0.3.5809
Interestingly though the package name is nuance and not swype.
From the manifest.xml:
HTML:
<manifest android:versionCode="5809" android:versionName="1.0.3.5809" package="com.nuance.swype.input"
This must be their first release since acquiring swype.

Word removing is changed and I don't like it.
On non beta, if you hold the backspace button then word by word would get deleted, but now it's letter by letter. Damn!

AGREED! This is my only complaint thus far. Why did they mess with it, or at least not make it an option???

Is it possible to change the Swype's interface?
In the German version they attached üßöä on the right side of the keyboard... that is annoying! Is there any way to change it?

Another bug. Just click on the address bar of a website and see how long it takes to pop up the Swype. I was on Stock browser.

How can you enable handwriting? I choose it from options but I couldn't find to run it.
All in all this is an awful release in my opinion.
Ability to delete words in the original dictionary is a HUGE improvement, and I also love the option to have popups.
But then I noticed that words you just typed get erased immediately if you press backspace, but I just though well, I guess I can get used to that even though it's kind of a stupid change to make.
Then I noticed that backspace now erased letter by letter instead of words by word.
THEN I noticed that words get auto-added, meaning that every time you type out a captcha or feel like randomly saying something like "wazzaaaaaaa" to a friend, you'll involuntarily be getting those words added to your dictionary!
AND THEN I noticed that you can't add the "" and the "" smileys to your dictionary. A feature which I usually use at least once per sms!
I don't see why they feel like they have to decide for us whether we want to erase word by word or letter by letter, or whether we want words to auto-add or not!?
Also, I've been swyping this entire post, and making a capital i is near impossible, and a capital A IS impossible. Also the marker seems to have a life of it's own most of the time. Horrible release.
Back to the last Swype beta for me, good that I had a backup...
I just hope they bring a new beta with the old features soon before this one expires.
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk 2
Wish I had a backup. It's more accurate by far but messaging is annoying, the letter marker seems to jump and it creates duplicate when everything a new line on everything. Also, i hate the send key being replaced by smilies.
Swype Full
Hi all,
I recently moved from Stock-rom (in which I had a full version of swype - 3.26 I think). Is there a way that I can extract my Swype from the Stock-rom and move it to the custom rom? (I have Nandroid for the stock).
I've tried to backup with TB in the stock, and restore in the custom but it didn't work. I also tried to copy the data\app files & data\dalvik-cache & data\data\com.android.swype.inputmethod & of course - the apk.
It all didn't work.
Any advices?
Thanks.

You have to copy the lib file as well as the app from the /system/app and system/lib to the respective folders I think
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Thanks.
I've tried to do that.
At system\lib, originally, I had nothing that relates to Skype.
However, at Data\Data\com.swype.android.inputmethod\, I had several folders. One of them was ..\Lib, and the lib file was there.
No other place it was originally placed.
Any advices?
and another question, if I may...
where are the language packs files stored?
I love the new app but DAMN ITS A MEMORY HOG!
Old Swype on my device used 12.24MB
New Swype plus mandatory SwypeConnect app uses 38.2MB :silly:

[Q] New to the GS3, and I have some questions

Hey, so I just got a GS3 after coming from an Evo 4G LTE, and so far I'm loving it. Plus, this is my first Samsung phone, my previous 3 have all been HTC. (The many versions of the EVO) Anyway I do have a few questions that maybe someone can help me with.
1. I noticed that there are different settings for the vibration. Now, when I receive a txt it seems to do the basic ring vibration. I saw that there's an option to create your own vibration, which is pretty cool, but it didn't set for my txt messaging, perhaps I'm doing it wrong?
2. This might be just me or perhaps I'm just used to the keyboard on sense, but I'm noticing I'm making a lot of mistakes while typing. Lol, it's probably just me.
3. I love how samsungs threw in a lot of neat (or gimmicky) features. However, if I'm concerned about battery are there any I should turn off (I know motion is one, but I kinda like it)
4. Out of curiosity, what rom is everyone using? I'm debating whether to stay stock rooted, although I might switch to AOKP. Lol unlike sense, touchwiz really doesn't have a lot of issue with it.
5. Now if I do switch to AOKP or AOSP how is the camera quality?
Thanks in advanced!

1. No idea I haven't been on touchwiz since i got my phone
2. I hate the Samsung keyboard I switch to a ICS keyboard that's available in the market
3. Not sure. The only motion I ever left on was the swipe your palm to screen shot and I didn't noticed a decrease in battery. As long as you clear stuff in the task manager you should be fine
4. I've been on Paranoid Android for awhile. Touchwiz isn't as bad as people make it seem just not my style. A lot of cool looking touchwiz roms
5. Camera quality should be exactly the same except you lose certain features that are only available on the touchwiz

1. I am pretty sure the vibrate pattern is just for incoming calls not notifications even if you create a custom.
2. Yea lots of different keyboards mess around with a few find the one that fits you. I am using the new swiftkey flow and will not be looking back.
3. When on a TW rom I only use the swipe screenshots and hold phone to ear to call no battery issues for me. I delete S voice completely and disable other motion controls I dont need.
4. Currently running FreeGS3 3.0 really enjoying it. I spend most of my time on CM or other AOSP roms but if you are happy with TW for my phone anyways FreeGS3 has been very solid with the right amount of features and completely stable. The Aroma installer is easy and feature filled almost idiot proofs ROM installation.
5. As he said above the image quality will be fine just loose a few shiny du hickys in the camera ui
Thanks for both of your replies. I'm going to try CM and some other touchwiz roms.

True! Actually I just found out some interesting information. Apparently the "0" folder holds all the information that was in the /sdcard folder before the jellybean update. Another user found it on their galaxy nexus. Oddly enough, most of the folders in mine were empty. Titanium Backup was the only one taking up space because for some reason it backed up there, I also had around 200mb in the android data folder, but I really had a hard time finding out where, so anyway I just ended up deleting it. So far no ill effects.

Yeah, I read this in another thread when a user couldn't find anything on their sdcard
Its weird why they would do that though, maybe to separate phone stuff from things that the user puts on their sdcard? Idk
By the way, just had to say this but I love your sig, the "life would be so much easier....." part
I love to code myself and I just found that really awesome lol

[Q] Change notification bar to be more tablet-like?

I like my Note 8! It's practically perfect for me, except for two big, glaring issues:
While the hardware "home" button is great, the "menu" and "back" buttons below the screen eliminate the advantage gained by spending the extra $100 by making it impossibly frustrating to take notes in class, and
The thickness of the notification bar is pretty cool, but its placement and behavior is decidedly phone-like.
These issues should be software-fixable! I just don't know what I'm doing.
The question, in three parts:
Is there any way to/How do you
Move the notification bar to the bottom of the screen,
Change it to be more like a proper tablet's bar, including buttons and the one-touch notification pop-up thing, without going CM7's route, and
Disable the "menu" and "back" buttons while keeping the "home" button? (Alright if "home" needs to be disabled too, though.)

I agree, it should be something that is editable without much change, but the reason for it is just how each particular program (including the system files, notification bar, etc.) just read the screen's DPI and go from there.
To answer your questions, 1, 2, and 3 are a No until custom development begins. Then all of those wants could easily be fulfilled.

Here is what i did.
After I rooted the note 8, I went to the play store and installed "Rom Toolkit" Then, when to the performance tab in Rom toolkit and lowered the "ro.sf.lcd_density" to 170. For some reason it show this twice. I only changed the top one.
For some reason, it will move the notification bar to the bottom and act like a tablet at that point. I was surprised and it is a nice change. Of course you will need to tweak a few items to get it the way you want, but it great! I do recommend you guys use a Launcher from the Play store. I used Apex launcher for mine.

I'm waiting for this ROM. Then the note 8.0 would be perfect. I love the form factor, but wish it was a small note 10.1 vs. a large note II.

Thats a sweet looking rom! Hope it does get posted for the note 8. I have been using that Muilt Window app from the play store.

Here is what i did.
After I rooted the note 8, I went to the play store and installed "Rom Toolkit" Then, when to the performance tab in Rom toolkit and lowered the "ro.sf.lcd_density" to 170. For some reason it show this twice. I only changed the top one.

I changed it, and restarted the device when the little prompt came up advising me that it might be a good idea. It's stuck at the boot animation now. Is there any way to un-upscrew it at the moment?
edit- Holding down power and the down-volume button, I got to the "odin mode" screen. I'm going to download Kies and see if it allows for recovery.

Now that sucks!!
ok, here is what you can try. Go into recovery mode and If i recall it is the power and vol up button. When the Samsung boot screen shows up, where is shows the GT5110 etc.. Keep holding the Power and vol up button a few seconds longer then let go.
Now, when you are on the recovery screen, choose wipe data/factory reset and cache. AFter it is done, reboot.
Should boot up ok after that.

You will be able to ODIN back to stock if need. I screwed when i kept tweaking and playing with widgets and stuff.
Just make sure to download the correct Factory rom for the note 8 and it will be returned to stock, just like you got it from the store.

Samsung's support site doesn't seem to have the firmware available for download. The official help pages tell me to use Kies. I am updating it now, but would rather use Odin, of course.
I'm doing a "firmware emergency recovery" with Kies. It was simple enough to start... now let's see how it ends. I think that it's pretty darn cool of Samsung to basically say "yeah, tweaking is okay, and we'll help you fix it if you break it."

Awesome! Do you happen to be running a mod to the multi-window thing? I suspect that this is what the problem was, in my case, but I'd like to be sure.

I actually downloaded the rom from a site when i googled it and to my surprise the samsung apps were still there. It the recent google room if i recall correctly. I used ODIN to install it and not Kies. I really dont trust that program.
No, I just turned enabled the multi-window option in the setting and installed the multiwindow app from play. Was going to mod it as well, but did have a chance too. If i recall, the mod is supposed to enable all apps for multi window correct?

The app from the store is indeed the one that I was referring to. Hmm... I will try and do the build.prop edit again once this thing is done restoring. Hope it works, to be sure! It's just too bad that there's no way yet to go in and change a simple little file. I hope that we get a proper recovery soon!

Yeah, I wish it was easy.... Now that XDA has a forum dedicated to the note 8, hoping there will be more development on it and we start see support for it. I was really thinking of returning it, but after this mod, I started using it a lot more than my mini. My mini is more of my game tablet now LOL!!

I restored it successfully using Kies (not bad), and applied the dpi tweak.
Holy cow, I see what you're saying. It feels like a functional tablet now, instead of a giant-sized phone! If only there were a better notes app (OneNote for Android with pen recognition, please?), this thing would be golden! I replaced a tablet PC (screen broke) with this little gizmo, and I think that this will out-preform it!

The rom I used was from this page. Used ODIN to recover and came up ok. *Mods* if not ok to link please disable. Sorry.
I know it is a euro rom, but it did get me out of a jam. At least until the Samsung USA releases one.

Glad it worked great for you!!! It is sweet ain't it. :good:
The big change i did like was the notifications. Instead of filling the whole screen it just pops up in the corner.
Yeah, I agree, hope Onenote would do that, but I wont hold my breath with Microsoft.

I'm having an issue with the cool setup... whenever I go to install something, the tablet freezes and necessitates a reboot. This stops happening when I change the DPI back to default. Any ideas on how to make this stop happening? Thanks for your help so far
Sent from my GT-N5110 using XDA Premium HD app
best resource for Samsung firmware I've seen
is Samfirmware.com. tons of firmwares for most Samsung devices.
Before you get too deep into modding, make a note of what ROM your device is on, including all the characters in the code - ie, mine is
JZ054K.N5110UECMCA
(and I'd love to know what folks who haven't flashed their devices have - I'm pretty sure that's what Kies downloaded for me, though.)
Rather than try to find the Note 8 (listed as a phone, since in some places it will be one) you can use the "search for your device" box to get a list of all the firmware they have for it.,

A checked on SAMMOBILE and they have a lot of the stock ROMs but not the US 4.1.2 version yet. After I got my Tab, it did the OTA update on the 16th. Sammobile should have this up soon so if we have problems we can Odin back. They have a number of European 4.1.2 Roms, British and Austrian.
samfirmware doesn't always know where a firmware is distributed.
The one I downloaded from them, I picked because it matched the code on the packaging:
the packaging on my unit reads "Model GT-N5110ZWYXAR"
The full listing for the firmware I downloaded included region XAR when I downloaded it; Samfirmware has now updated that to "Cellular South," which is a US cell carrier code from Samsung. (Cellular South is AKA Cspire, HQ'ed in Ridgeland, Mississippi, it turns out.)
My memory is that I actually did use Kies to recover my device, but never want to again, as it involved downloading a 1.2 gig file over a DSL line. Having the full firmware around should I want to do a restore or inspect the default configuration is very handy, though. I've extracted the /system image onto one of my linux boxes to poke around in.
thanks to whomever suggested we look at multwindow apps. I set up "Samsung Multiwindow Manager" earlier today, and it's great. I told it I was on a Note II and so far it's working fine.
I've never been able to get a viable build.prop with a lower lcd_density setting to work, and stopped trying.
For those giving it a go and not wanting to do a complete device reset:
Rather than Odin mode, get into recovery mode. (when shut down: Home + Volume Up + Power for a couple of seconds after the splash screen)
If you connect your device to your computer in recovery mode, the recovery shell that Samsung puts on the device supports ADB.
Whenever i've bootlooped my device trying to adjust lcd_density, I've been able to restore a backup of build.prop and reboot.
HOWEVER: make sure your backup of build.prop is on the device (preferably build.prop.bak or similar in /system) - I wasn't able to push the file in in recovery mode, but could rm the unhappy build.prop and cp the backup file back into place.

Actually, I noticed the number on build.prop in Galaxy Tab Plus is 160. You try the number between 160 and 200.
There are two lines in build.prop.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE (T325) stock sms app?

G'day folks, I am currently running CM13 because I got fed up waiting for samsung to update after a year. Different launcher, neon theme. Looks great, no samsung crap, good battery life and beautiful!
But, I haven't found an SMS app that works like the stock one with a list of the people on the left who sent sms's and then the messages on the right when I click on a person on the left and that's the way that I like it.
Does anyone happen to have the stock "Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE (T325)" sms app? And would it work with CM13 perhaps?
Or another sms app that I can lay out the same as that one?
You could just use something like ICS JB EXT4 Unpacker to grab that *.apk from a Stock ROM. Problem (for you), is like most of the stock Samsung crapware... It'll likely require you to have TouchWiz or the Magazine UX (As it's actually called on this Device), to actually use it.

Hadn't thought of the touchwiz angle damn it.
Do you know of a similar sms app for cm13 that looks like it but doesn't have touchwiz issues?
Just want the people on the left and the conversations on the right (although I like the speech bubbles too)

Unfortunately (Or fortunately if your that way inclined), I'm not a big user of SMS, outside of Googles own 2FA.
When presented with an option of which App I want to handle SMS Functions. I tend to go with Google's own Hangouts App.
Question is it as good as Samsung's?! Alas I'm the wrong person to ask.
Given my other Device is a Nexus 7 (2012). I can't even say how it would handle there as its just the 16GB WiFi version, that need to get the Code from where ever I currently have the attached SIM to.
And I'm really only using that as a place to freeze my Game on while I try to work out why 8Bit PCM / LPCM *.wav Files refuse to play correctly though the native stack.
Note they play fine though VLC though, for some reason. Just not out of VLC, which is odd, as they play fine under Stock, and CM12.1. Just not under CM13.

Yes the Telephone & Data are working.
You'll probably need to manually swap out the mixer_paths.xml File though. Otherwise your Calling Partner will hear an echo of him/herself, on their end.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59667623&postcount=266
In short you need to rename the old mixer_paths.xml to mixer_paths.xml.org (In case you mess up), and paste the replacement File into /system/etc. (Use something like ES File Explorer to do that), also you need to make sure to set the correct permission 644 (rw- r-- r--), before rebooting.
You'll probably have to keep replacing that File after every Update though. Other then that the Phone / Data are 100% tip top.
