[Q] Network Settings - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have my T989 on the Bell Mobile network in Canada. I've been having problems with the data network lagging when I investigate it seems like it is constantly switching from HSPA to HSDPA and HSPAP. When I first setup I was getting speeds of around 10-15mbps. Lately I'm ranging from 15kbps to 3mbps and this is all from the same areas I typically got higer speeds. While researching I found out I could set my preference to WCDMA only which is appropriate as Bell does not have a GSM network, just CDMA, HSPA and LTE (no LTE in my area).
Does anyone have any idea what maybe causing these slow speeds? I've tried several different modems all with the same results.
Update: When I go to stock Telus rom I get the fast speeds back but only for the first five minutes then it goes back to slow.

you can try puting a telus radioin after flashing a rom. You can find one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400&highlight=telus+radio

Thanks for the reply, the problem ended up being a tower in my area, Bell is apparently going to fix it but it's been like this for at least a week already so we will see. There is another one within range that would solve all my problems but I get put on this one every time as it's the closest....sometimes I wish it was possible to at least request a different tower and not have to rely on the network to tell the phone which one to use.

[Q] Couple roaming questions

Ok,when I visit my family in area code 27970 and 27962 my phone roams on US cellular's crappy network. I'm always use to seeing 1x and about 1-2 bars when I roam down here. The internet is basically useless with the slow speeds. Unusually the last 2-3 days I've been able to get 3g from somewhere. I'm guessing Verizon bc they've just built a new Verizon store in town. Unfortunately, I can't get it to return bk to 3g anymore. idky ( on miui btw)
. My questions are:
1. Is there a way for me to specify using Verizon's towers over US Cellulars?
2. What would be the cause of the random 3g speeds?
3.would roaming on us cellular ever give me a 3g signal?
I'm just clueless as to why I got 3g speeds for a couple of days and now all of a sudden it stops. I tried flashing bk to a sense rom (synergy) updating prl and profile but it still says 1x. I want my mofo 3g.
1. Yes, use qpst (not providing directions) to flash verizon PRL file.
2. ****ty signal, and other factors.
3. No.
Thanks for the responses. Im still confused bc The nearest sprint service/tower is probaly an hour away. And ive always roamed while here. Now I can't get it bk

[Q] SGH-T989D (Telus) Slow "4G" on T-Mobile

Hello all!
Noob here, first post, so first and foremost please pardon any ignorance. I did search here as well as google without finding any significant results. I appreciate anyone who takes time to answer.
I recently bought an unlocked Galaxy S2x (989D) for use here in the USA on T-Mobile. I went with the 989D and not the 989 because I'm using a grandfathered T-Zones plan.
I rooted/flashed Juggernaut 5.0 through cwm, and the phone is working fine EXCEPT my download/upload speeds are lousy. Consistently 1.5Mbps down / 500Kbps Up MAX with 800-1200 ms ping via speedtest app from various parts of Maryland (Baltimore/DC corridor) and using different servers. My N1 has always tested faster than that in the same area, which is why I'm particularly concerned.
I tried flashing Telus KJ3, T-Mo KID and T-Mo KL1 modems found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001
But saw no improvement. I've also tried using the stock epc.t-mobile and the old internet2.voicestream APNs, with equally crappy results on both.
Is it just a matter of T-Mo having terrible speed over HSPA in this area, or is it possible that there's something screwy going on with the device/rom/kernel/radio? FWIW, calls and texts are fine, and wifi calling works as well. I've attached a few screenshots in case any of them might be helpful.
TIA!
hmm... you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514954
there's no spoon
highest speed i ever got was close to 10 Mbps in Canada 3G/3.5G networks
seems more like the area you live in, have poor Tmo coverage for data
That's disappointing, to say the least, especially since according to the coverage map, I'm smack in the middle of a giant blob of "4G Excellent" coverage. I'm still confused as to why my Nexus One would have better speedtest results. Perhaps HTC/Google FTW.
seriously???
Is this legit? Full 4G signal? I can't imagine how it's THIS slow. Does jugg 5.0 have any build.prop tweaks that could be farking with my data? Just threw my sim card into my N1 to compare and it's way faster.
@JoshD422, Did you ever figure this out?
[Q] Whats the difference between each of the radios?

I am also wondering about this same fact with a real Telus phone in Canada. I'm also wondering about the difference between the 3 radios that were provided with the Darkside.UCLE2 Beta 5 ROM. (Don't get me wrong, appreciate all the hard work from these guys, amazing where the T989 dev has come already!)
I tried all 3 radios, and get different speeds with each one. Blazes 4G radio I can't seem to tether, and then the T-mo radios I'm having issues with Bluetooth and even Data.
Could someone if you have a minute explain what the difference is between the radios and maybe suggest what radio would be best for us Telus users in Canada?
Cheers, TIA!

JoshD422,
I will be the first to tell you living in Toronto, that its completely unpredictable in Canada.
I've had areas if there is high use downtown I will get even worse results than that (seen a ping of over 1000ms ).
At the same time I can redo a speedtest about 200 metres away, and get results up in the 10 Mbps and pings of 45 ms. So I don't believe that part has to do with the radios but more the quality of service, and I'm in whats supposed to have the best service city in Canada.
Your problem definitely seems to be due to the T-Zones plan. I don't have that plan and I'm using an unlocked stock Telus T989D in Maryland and I get 2-4 Mbps down and 0.7-1.0 Mbps up

Do you get the "4G" icon?
I am on a stock unlocked T989d in the Atlanta area and get similar speed to you. However, I only see the "3G" icon in my phone.

Yes, only "3g" icon in MD/DC area. I guess maybe perhaps this is not as fast as using the T-Mobile radio software that comes stock in the T989, but it's plenty fast for me. I don't think the "4g" capability is much faster, anyway.

I think the "4g" icon is purely cosmetic. I have an unlocked Telus T989d on Tmobile and my co-worker has the Tmobile T989 on Tmobile. We both did a Speedtest side to side and we both got ~12Mbps down, ~1.3Mbps up. My phone was showing the 3g icon, while his was showing the 4g icon. Both our networks showed up as HSPA. Both of us in our respective stock, un-rooted ROMs.
While T-Mo roms do tend to be a bit over zelus with the 4G icon, it is much faster than a 3G connection. Where I live in Orlando is a 4G area and I get over 20mbs download speeds and over 2mbps upload speeds..
Side note though.. it is funny that people still use "" or call it 3.5G when the T-Mobile network has been accepted as 4G for almost a year now .. I tried to find the artical but its being illusive today..

Officially, 4G is supposed to get 1000mbs peak download. Tmobile uses HSPA+ which peaks at ~80mbs. I think that is why people call it 3.5G or use the "4G" when talking Tmobile.

[Q] Radio Issue Brazil

Hey People,
I bought 2 months ago my Galaxy Nexus on Play Store for this wondeerful price they sell it.
My plan was to bring it here to Brazil and, of course, use it.
But, I used it on T-Mobile network while I was in the USA in Maryland area. The results where very good... Almost always having 3G signal and pretty decent speeds testing on speedtest app.
When I started using it here in Brazil, I had some issues related to HSPA+ speeds.
My carrier (Claro BR) does support HSPA+(some carriers here, don't), and sometimes, I think, the phone just forgets to use HSPA+ and keeps using HSDPA...
I can reach up to 4Mbs on HSDPA and always between 4-8Mbs on HSPA+.
What I normally do is turning on and off airplane mode and the phone starts using H+ again.
I am using I250UILE1 radio and CNA 05192012 nightly w/ 1344-384 Trinity kernel.
I forgot to say that when I turn Wifi off and automatically let my phone connect to DATA connection it fastly connects to HSDPA switches for a little time to UMTS and then switches back to HSDPA and no signal for H+. And I again have to switch radio off and on (airplane mode).
I think I tried almost everything...

[Q] Massive Latency, May be stuck in EHRPD mode. Suggestions?

A few weeks ago I was in an area with LTE. I switched my radio over to LTE/CDMA to take advantage of this. After returning home and switching back over to CDMA, I noticed some issues with my data connection. In regular CDMA mode, my data connection ranges from 1-2 Mbps down and 1--20 Mbps up. My ping is usually 500 to 1000 ms, in CDMA mode or LTE mode. There is no LTE in my area. When it is in CDMA it behaves as if it is in EHRPD. Normally my speeds in CDMA (EVDO REV A) are 1-2 Mbps down and .5-1 up with about 100 ms latency.
I am running stock ROM 4.1.1 rooted with this mod installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346680. I have just removed this file with no changes to my data speed. Note that it was working fine before I put it into LTE mode. Any suggestions?
Bump.

eHRPD is simply a bridge between CDMA (or EVDO in this case) and LTE, it allows the passage of network packets between the two networks seamlessly so that it can HAND OFF to LTE in the proper method without losing connectivity or requiring a NEW IP address.
In basic terms... when your phone is connected through eHRPD, it's still using the same existing EVDO network, nothing has changed there, it's just now in a "ready" state for when LTE is "active" on the phone.
So I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "behaves as if it is in eHRPD" because they are essentially the same thing, just operating on a different backbone.
If you're meaning that it's showing eHRPD instead of EVDO now, that is normal, and is most likely because they are planning on implementing LTE in your area soon, maybe not at the specific tower you're connected to, but one or more around that tower. (by soon I mean Sprint's version of the word "soon" which is anytime between now and the next several months)
But that doesn't mean it would affect your speed in any way. (not negatively NOR positively) It's just sending the data packets through a different route, it's still 3G.
Now, aside from that... in my area for example, I'm constantly jumping between 1X and 3G and the call quality is awful, this is because they are upgrading the towers here to LTE, which I confirmed with Sprint in an online chat with their level 2 or whatever Tech Service. So... This could be the source of your problem as well, but you'll need to confirm that with Sprint or check on www.s4gru.com to check their schedule... But I bet it will be worth talking to sprint about it, but you'll need at least an hour or so of free time... they aren't the fastest on checking these things, and sometimes the first person you talk to don't know squat, so you might have to get escalated to someone who can actually look at the real behind the scenes details.
I am familiar with the process that the phone uses for eHRPD. From my understanding, it should not be using eHRPD when it is not in LTE/CDMA mode. My phone was showing these upload speeds when in regular CDMA mode. It was also showing major latency, which is not from a network upgrade. The speeds are normal on my other device and I also checked with a Sprint rep. My device was also having an issue with updating the PRL and Profile. It was giving connection error 6. The rep tried resetting the connection from his end and I tried ##72786# to no avail. In the end, I just backed everything up with Titanium and restored via CWM to a much earlier backup. This fixed the latency, bandwidth and PRL/Profile update issue.

It connects to eHRPD whether its in lte/cdma or just cdma only. If the tower supports eHRPD then it takes priority over EVDO wheter lte is enabled or not. Your latency issues are more than likely due to upgrades in the area. eHRPD handles CDMA 3g more efficiently preventing tower overload, allowing more consistent speeds and better hand off between networks

[Q] Only can get H and H+ on T-mobile with US version of Find 7a

Was briefly excited on the arrival of my US version from oppostyle, but after hours of T-mobile tech support, a factory reset, APN attempts, still no LTE or proper 3g even on my Find 7, even though I live in a strong 3g/4g area...only (HSPA) H and H+. Can anyone help?
Thank you

Hmm, those match my settings and I am getting LTE. Dumb question, but have you restarted? I noticed my phone can get kinda quirky when switching between APN's, or if the data gets turned off by another app for some dumb reason or another.
I have a feeling there is a little more tweaking to do to the modem from Oppo...

I was uunclear about H+, have just been looking up info....Was on Verizon, a GSM newbee here
However, I am seeing very slow speeds on HSPA+ and HSP...not even seeing much of a difference in speeds between the two on my device.
between them. Averaging 0.6 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps down, and 0.8 mbps to 1.3 Mbps up, even though T-mobile tech support claims I have excellent 4g coverage in my area. Is this most likely hardware?
Also, on my roadtrip yesterday to Medford, I was capping off at around 10 Mbps on LTE at the most, which seems a ,ittle slow for LTE.

Sometimes your coverage can be solid but the backhaul (connection between towers and the Internet) can be awful. AT&T's local reps even told me that the local LTE isn't going to be particularly good for a while until they upgrade the backhaul to the towers.
Your HSPA+ speeds seem low, but that's in comparison with my AT&T experiences. I might try doing a speedtest comparison of LTE between my Nexus 5 and my Find 7a if I can.
I was reading the pocketnow review and they had trouble getting the phone to work on AT&T and T-mobile in the US. Does this phone even support T-Mobile LTE bands? In most areas T-Mobile has their LTE on the AWS band.
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda app-developers app
It actually does support them...I was told there was 4g here but there isn't as of yet

Mine does get all of these (4G, H, H+, etc.) but the problem is most of the time it can't even get data connection.
GPRS Setting for LTE works for Me
I was having problems connecting to data, calls no problem (OPPO FIND 7 USA).
Anyway, the automatic APN settings weren't right for me,I had to manually set the APN Protocol setting to IPV4 (wasn't set, reading Not Set) & it finally connected to 4G LTE.
Here's the strange part:
The APN Name (On OPPO FIND 7,USA Model) is T-Mobile GPRS NOT T-Mobile LTE.
If I changed the name,it wouldn't connect to data at all.
From best I can tell via web search, GPRS is synonymous with 2G,however,I have 4G LTE when this APN Name is used.
I've seen others having a hard time connecting to the network & seems this bug arose in the latest update.
Anyway,my settings are identical to those in the pics in the OP EXCEPT the very 1st line, the APN Name.
Where I'm at right now is notorious for a weak signal due to building/equipment interference, however,I'm picking up an excellent signal (-90 to -80dBm / 53asu) on LTE:13
Have you tried to turn on LTE 4G by going in the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* phone information and set preferred network as LTE only ?

Yes.
As it is now,w/the APN Name as T-Mobile GPRS & in the hidden menu, changing the preferred network to LTE has no effect,it stays connected to LTE & everything below that which is available in my area.
I just left it as UNKNOWN.
I tried changing the APN Name to T-Mobile LTE & it immediately disconnects, regardless of any other changes in the hidden menus.
As the phone senses/sets-up Auto APN,the only apparent thing that is omitted is the APN Protocol setting, which by default on my phone & SIM Card registered Not Set.
Changing that value to IPV4 (from Not Set) is what made the difference.
Perhaps this quirk has something to do with 2G in my area having been replaced/upgraded to 4G & 4G LTE & the phone doesn't sense the difference/recognize the difference but in name only, but, accepts the 4G/LTE Connection.
Not knowing all things network/etc..,this seems like a possible explanation.
All I know is that I have an excellent connection & fast speeds w/browsing/etc.....
I don't care what the phone calls it,or sees it as,success is success.
I've seen stranger things than this........
I have since replaced my SIM CARD & had no problems connecting to T-MOBILE's 4G LTE,no modification of the APN was needed.
However, this is while flashed to CYANOGENMOD 11 nightlies, have no idea if the previous issues would pop-up if running the stock COLOR 1.2.4i O/S.
I have had issues with T-mobile LTE. Played around with all the settings. Deleted the APN and created a new one, etc. It works now, but I didn't do anything special, it started working randomly a day or 2 later
Strangely enough I'm having the same problem getting 3g with Virgin (EE/TMobile) in the UK
It can take a while for LTE to provision after setting up the APN. Set it and let it try for about an hour.
APN
The APN setting should have no effect on this.
You have 2 different fields when you type *#*#4636#*#*, gsm service and gprs service. If gsm service does not show "in service", you can use any APN in the world and it still won't work.
