Help rooting & ROM for a 2nd time - no dice ! - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have already rooted my S3 and installed AOKP, but I forgot to sync my contacts with Google, so I had to install the stock ROM and then get all my contacts back using Kies.
So, I want to Root my phone again and get AOKP back as I have now syncd my Contacts with Google.
I booted up Odin and put on the file CWM Recovery.tar
I try to go into Clockwork Mod Recovery mode (volume up, home, Pwr buttons), but I get into just the regular Android system recovery (3e) mode and not Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Any suggestions?!?!
Also, in download mode, it states that I have:
Binary: 4 counts
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
How can I get into Clock work mode recovery???
All I want to do is install a custom ROM...!

After using Odin to install the .tar file and having it downloaded successfully with Odin, I still cant get into CMR mode. I am definitely holding down the Vol Up, Pwr & Home buttons at the same time.
Maybe I should clear a cache or reset something?!

So in ROM Manager, I select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" or "Flash ClockworkMod Touch"
sorry for the nOOb questions...

I have tried to "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" using ROM Manager and get an error: An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!
I have also installed Triangle Away to reset my binary counter, but that doesnt work since my phone needs to be rooted.

Use this toolkit. It worked perfectly fir me. Just make sure you follow the directions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
And make sure you read everything carefully before you start flashing. Also make a backup of your IMEI. This will save you a headache later.

I have a rooted bone stock UCALG1 ROM that you can flash in ODIN. Then download ROM manager like the other member said to flash CWR. If you want touch without paying for it through Play you have to use Terminal Emulator to push it. I can give instructions for that also if you need them. If you want the rooted UCALG1 zip let me know.
If ROM manager is giving that message either it asked for root and you accidentally clicked deny or it isn't rooted properly. That's the only time i've encountered that message myself.
And Triangle Away will reset that flash counter for you

Rooted but can't install rom

Okay just rooted my galaxy s 2 with the auto root, I want to install roms using rom manager but sometimes it will rom manager has denied super user permission but other times it will not say it all and it will download complete I hit install rom wipe everything then a triangle with an exclamation mark in it and the android dude on the side pops up and stays there, I take the battery out then put it back in and it takes me to the recovery system but it only says reboot now, apply update, wipe data, and wipe cache with the triangle with an exclamation mark in it and the android dude still showing behind it. Any clue to what can be wrong?
Sounds like you haven't flashed a custom recover, if you have unlocked the bootloader already then you may be able to flash clockworkmod recovery from within rom manager,
Not sure I have an evo 3d
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
What do you mean by haven't unlocked bootloader?
I hold the vol. down, power and home button at the same time then vol up to continue it says Odin Mode, product name SPH-D710, Custom Binary download: NO, Current Binary: Samsung official....Downloading do not turn off target!! Been on the screen for a while now.

No u just need Clockwork Mod recovery to flash a rom rom manager won't do it, I had this problem and really rooted again with a method that included clockwork mod in it. I have a Mac so I don't think it'll be the same way but try this. If u can go to the ACS website they are always easier.

First, just to make sure, you wrote Galaxy S 2 in your OP, but you are on the E4GT (Sprint) version correct?
If you are, and used sfhub's Auto Root, did you proceed to option 'C'? If not, you have not yet installed a custom recovery, which is what you need to install custom ROMs.
Try this, hold [Power] + [Vol. Up] at the same time for several seconds (30+.) If you are booted into CWM recovery, you will be all set to flash ROMs, if not you still need a kernel with CWM (option C in the auto root process.) Based on your comments in the OP, you do not have a custom recovery. I believe you described the stock recovery.
Easiest thing to do is go back to the Auto Root batch file and complete option C. This will give you recovery without increasing your custom software counter (counter = bad for warranty.)
Yes I'm with sprint and no I didn't proceed with c thanks for informing me I will try to see if it works. Thanks.

TWRP boot loop note 2

So i installed the zip via these instructions:
Install using your existing recovery like you would any other zip.
Reboot and select TWRP from the boot menu.
There is NO boot menu and when I do a volume up menu power Teamwin pops up then it restarts and it simply doesn't frickin work at all.... wtf
The Android Market App Install Method (GooManage) worked flawlessly for me. I'd highly recommend that.
Try the Odin method as well if you can't seem to boot to your system.
So for the odin just hold volume down plug it into the pc then run the odin.exe on the pc and its that easy?
Actually, it's run Odin first. Then make sure the phone is completely powered off. (Remove battery if necessary, then put it back in.) Then press and hold the home button, down volume rocker button and power button until it takes you to download mode. Then you can plug it to the PC. Once Odin says "Added!" at the side, you're ready to upload/install (reinstall in your case) custom recovery.
I just updated my TWRP Recovery from 2.3.3.1 to 2.3.3.2 by flashing the 2.3.3.2 openrecovery zip from my 2.3.3.1 Recovery. What is your current Recovery? Go to TeamWIN website and search for appropriate recovery for your device... then download the "zip" file to your ext sd if you wish to flash via your current recovery. You can also download the "tar" and flash via Odin3.
In odin use pda option to load the default stock rom
Easy peasy
Do this http://androidromupdate.com/2012/11...y-note-2-sgh-i317-original-factory-stock-rom/
Sent from GN2 using XDA app
Yeah I put the correct zip from the twrp site the latest for the note 2 att and when the teamwin pops up it just restarts ....
Okay just flased odin 2.3.3.2 and teamwin pops up and restarts... maybe 2.3.3.2 is COMPLETELY FRICKIN Screwed ill try a different version
This is where im getting the data for my note 2 att
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/124
What exact things DO I need to check in ODIN since I just flashed 2.3.3.1 and getting the same issue just restarts after Teamwin pops up
I FIXED IT ALL BACK TO NORMAL AND TWRP is working thanks everyone
So, what was the final solution you came up with?
Go to play store. Download goo manager.
In goo manager hit menu button and select "install openscriptrecovery" then ensure it says your device name. And if it does hit OK/yes. It will say it installed almost immediately. And you're good to go.

had to re-partition in odin with an sgh-i317 pit file to stock then went to stock recovery cleared data then flashed twrp odin and installed cm10 jellybeer and all is well.

Clock work mod problem, please help

Galaxy S3 from at&t, i rooted my phone as soon as got it several months ago, I've flashed colockwordmode 3 times in the last day or so and i cannot make to work, i followed the steps exactly as described, Odin is showing the green pass, the binary cont is increasing every time I've tried but i can't get the phone to start in recovery mode by holding volume up, home and power! it just reboot and turns the phone on or it goes into the Samsung recovery mode (blue screen). Very frustrating!, anyone can please help.
BTW, when i rooted my phone i installed clockwordmode then and it worked fine, i had not has to use it since, I'm running the stock ROM i want to flash another ROM, before i do that i need to use clockworkmode and that's when i realized that it was not working anymore, then tried to flash it 3 times but no success. I still have root.
Have you tried twrp?

flash recovery again in odin but make sure the "auto reboot" box is NOT checked. once its done flashing, unplug it and remove the battery for a second. replace the battery and immediately hold down vol up+home+power. this should take you into cwm if it flashed correctly
this could happen when you didn't root it properly
anyways, if you are rooted(as you said), get twrp and see
+1 for twrp

If you still have root, you might want to try installing CWM directly from your phone, using the dd terminal command to copy CWM into the right partition:
Download the latest CWM .img file from CWM's site: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Put the file in your phone. For simplicity reason, I would suggest you put it in the root of your internal SD card. And because you will need to type the whole path+filename in the terminal in your phone, I would also suggest you rename the file to something simple, like cwm.img;
If you don't already have it, install Android Terminal Emulator;
Now, open the terminal emulator, and type the following commands:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/cwm.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
(That is, if you rename the CWM file to "cwm.img" and you actually put it in the root of your internal SD card. If you put it somewhere else or did not rename your file, you will need to adapt the "if=" part of the command.)
Profit.

Just curious: are you trying to flash CWM via Odin? If so where did you get it from? Did you install a botched version of stock recovery maybe (or one that is from another model of S3)? Try TWRP from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28019751&postcount=1. It is at the bottom of the post and it is labeled "Odin Flashable TWRP Recovery" under Miscellaneous files. Download and install via Odin.
And if you are on Jelly Bean, your flash counter will increment in your dealings with custom recoveries and roms. You only option at this point (if you have root still) is to get Triangle Away and run it in order to reset the counter. However, even if you clear your flash counter, if you go back into recovery it will trip again.

I'm still using stock ROM, i'd like to install a custom ROM but i'm reading that you have to have Clockworkmod to do a successful install.
When i check in the files of the phone (sd card) i can see the clockwordmod folder in there there but still can't get it to boot into cwm recovery, only the Samsung recovery and I've tried the volume up home and power button so many times but no success.
Why do you think it worked when i first rooted the phone and not now?
this is frustrating, thanks for the help.

Yes I've tried 3 times via Odin, i can't remember where i got the cmw file from, it's a tar file (clockworkmod.TAR), the part i don't understand is why when i first rooted the phone in August cwm worked, i used it to install the root and now after trying to install it again 3 times i can't get it to work.
I'm using the stock ROM, not jelly bean.

Easiest way to install TWRP is using GooManager from the Play Store.
1. Open GooManager.
2. Press the menu key to open the contextual menu, and select Install OpenRecoveryScript.
3. The app will ask you to confirm you really want to install a new recovery image.
4. GooManager searches for the correct TWRP build for your device. Look at the Filename line, it should display openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2att.img for AT&T or openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2can.img for Rogers/Bell/Telus. Again, confirm the installation.
5. Wait for the download to begin. TWRP will install. Done.
If it does not work or if GooManager does not find the correct build for your device -- in this latter case, this should raise a flag for you, as you may not have a SGH-i747/SGH-i747M; double check your phone model --, you can always install TWRP manually. From TWRP website (http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2), you can grab the IMG file to manually install from the terminal emulator, and a TAR file to install using ODIN.

if you have root, download Rom Manager and install cwm from the menu.
i've also heard that, if rooted, you can erase /system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer) an that will make cwmstick. this is due to newer software versions overwriting your stock recovery on reboot.

the device has detected an application attempting unppermitted actions and has stopped loading. To protect your device it is recomended you reboot.

i had to load the

file first cos i was getting an failure when installing the superuser using odin 3.0.7
my recovery is TWRP 2.5.0.0 and i am on wicked v1
Anyone else have this issue?
I had the same issue if you check the build number and the baseband version they are not the same. If you re-odin the MDL build http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip again then WIFI should work again. I got it rooted after that by doing the following:
1. Load the OUDHS CWM-Based Recovery 1.0.3.3 for T-Mo GS4, via odin uncheck auto reboot and goto to recovery http://k0nane.info/rom/OUDHS-Recovery-jfltetmo-1.0.3.3.tar
2. Install Chainfire's SuperSU http://www.shabbypenguin.com/Android/Scripts/Nexus-Files/Root/SuperSU-v1.25+.zip then
3 Install [KERNEL] Stock Touchwiz MDB - SetUID Restriction Removed http://d-h.st/GcM
Between installs make sure you wipe the cache and davik cache
then you reboot you should be rooted with the newest update MDL minus the kernel lock
yes its not same the build and the baseband
Is it possible to be done using the twrp?
other recovery was little difficult?
can u send me the links i need please i just don't want to mess around and brick my phone
Thanks a lot

Check my post again, I couldn't get TWRP to work at first but it maybe i did not uncheck the the auto reboot box when I did that. Once the the recovery is loaded via odin you need to pull the battery then do the home-up volume-power to get into the recovery. I notice TWRP was a bit too sensitive and could not scroll down the list of folders to get to the zip files

You need to uncheck the auto reboot box in odin, after the recovery transfer is complete pull the battery and unplug from your computer then do a boot into recover by holding the volume up-home-power button. If not rooted follow the instructions in my post above at the very least you need to load the kernel file

So I did that with all 3 recoveries like 2 or 3 times each, nothing was working I unchecked reboot then would just pull battery after reboot and hold vol up and power to try and get into recovery. Sometimes the litlte blue would appear in the top left corner saying "recovery booting" and would just stay there forever other times that would appear and then the phone would just reboot itself.
Anyway finally found instructions that allowed said to try checking auto reboot and f time reset so did that with a TWRP recovery tar and then it finished and rebooted. I then shut the phone off and held power and vol up to get into recovery and it loaded fine. I was then able to flash the chainfire superuser and kernel you posted. So Thanks a bunch man!

[Q] Cant enter CWM recovery mode

Hi, im new here. I here to ask. I want to root my galaxy grand duos (jellybean 4.2.2 not 4.1.2), but after i flashing CWM with odin, it doesn't work. Odin say "0 failed/1 successfully". And i saw the PASS text and my grand is rebooted successfully. After that i try to enter CWM recovery mode by pressing "Vol Up + Power button + Home". It took me to recovery mode but not CWM. It took me to Regular Android Recovery. Please help me with this. I want root my phone.
Did your device really reboot? In my case I had to take out the battery after Odin flashed cwm...
that's exactly my problem too. i can't access cwm recovery mod. it goes to stock recovery instead. i was able to access cwm recovery mod once but i didn't have superuser on my sd card. it was on my pc. so i rebooted my phone and the next time i tried to access cwm recovery mod i was unable to do so. seriously need help!!
Samsung stock flashes stock recovery on boot if a custom recovery is present... usually in cwm a notification appears when you're about to boot from cwm to ROM, asking to fix the stock recovery reflashing...

It contains the cwm recovery and step by step instructions, after flashing recovery you need to flash Fix-Recovery.zip to give cwm proper permissions. Then your recovery wont revert to stock Samsung recovery on each boot

@skpadhi79 Welcome to xda
thanks for the reply
Thanks for your reply. But still not working. I tried that 5× and still not working. I cant do anything. In normal recovery, i cant install Fix-recovery.zip or anything. I cant root my phone?.
Just follow step by step
1)connect your phone in download mode to pc/lap,make sure you have installed Samsung kies properly as odin will detect the drivers
2)check if the 'ID:COM' tab in odin is turned blue
3)now if its blue everything is fine and now with your phone connected, with 'ID:COM' tab in odin turned blue, select pda in odin and select cwm zip and untick auto reboot in odin.
4)then once u have selected cwm zip in pda and unticked auto-reboot hit START in odin.
5)after it says passed just unplug you phone and enter recovery manually by pressing VOL UP+POWER+HOME,now you should have cwm recovery
6)in cwm select install zip from sd card choose zip and select fix recovery.zip
7)after cwm says installation complete now again select install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card and select update super su zip
8)FINALLY reboot system now and now you have a fully functional cwm recovery and have successfully completed rooting process:thumbup:

Hi, im new here. I here to ask. I want to root my galaxy grand duos (jellybean 4.2.2 not 4.1.2), but after i flashing CWM with odin, it doesn't work. Odin say "0 failed/1 successfully". And i saw the PASS text and my grand is rebooted successfully. After that i try to enter CWM recovery mode by pressing "Vol Up + Power button + Home". It took me to recovery mode but not CWM. It took me to Regular Android Recovery. Please help me with this. I want root my phone.

Like iceyhotguy suggested, follow the instructions in the link he provided. Here.
Just Sharing
Well i had a same experienced with CWM acting like that on a Galaxy Grand, so i just share what i done to fix it.
The first i got my gadget, i let it update and all, and choose to Root it using CWM method.
at first it was goin well, Then i start going deeper by deleting stuff on system that i think i dont need like KNOX and others (Im acctually a NOOB do help me with what can i safely
deleted). what happen next when i restart my Phone, all stuck on the SAMSUNG Logo. so i redo the usual Flashing of Stock ROM n Reinstall the CWM. but its not working anymore.
The CWM like just gone from the Phone. after fiddling around, i realise when flashing CWM using ODIN3 v3.07. "i cant uncheck Auto-Reboot", i dont know why i cant, it just like
that. Luckly i still got my old backup of ODIN3 v1.85, in which i redo all the flashing and i can even uncheck the Auto-Reboot thing. Oh because the auto-reboot its
tick off in ODIN3 v1.85, after flashing, unplug ur phone and while in its download mode, press the button to straight away go to the recovery, if u reboot it all the
flash will not work. And Pooof all my problem fixed.
Got my Phone system back, CWM and Root working unlike before. Hope this Help people havin a same issue. sorry if i write somethin wrong since im a NOOB.
Press Thanks if needed
