[Q] R800x Xperia Play issues - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm probably not the only person to experience these problems on the R800x, and I couldn't find any other threads pertaining to a fix for my specific problem. I went to Verizon and Sony, and got frustrated very fast with them not even remotely having a clue on how to help.
My first issue is after rooting my phone and unlocking the bootloader, I flashed an ICS 4.0.1 ROM to my phone, it works great!
Problem is, I didn't realize the difference between the R800i and R800x. So now my phone lost its Radio image/Baseband Version, making my not have any servies (1x/2g/3g or bars) It's Wi-Fi only right now.
I read into flashing Radio images back to the phone so it can access the services, but I can't find one specifically for my phone. Any help there?
My second, and biggest issue with the phone is it's just not taking a charge. I've been flip flopping batteries with my other R800x to keep this one going. I tried a few things to fix that, but they just don't work and I'm tired of going in threads and reading crap and trying things that don't work.
Basically, I want my phone back to working order again, while keeping the ICS firmware.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
THINGS I HAVE TRIED TO FIX IT
-Flashing back to original firmware
-Adding a new charger file into .bin on phone itself
-Factory reset
-2.3.3 and 2.3.4 flashed firmwares

You can't have radio working because the rom was meant for GSM xperia plays. If you want ICS I sugget purchasing a GSM xperia play. Otherwise stick with stock to have everything working.

cm9 works for the r800x and the r800i
OP did you use flashtool for any of the flashing?

I used a flashtool, yes. I assume that was bad? It was the only way I could find for the R800x.
That's not where it messed up and lost my baseband and radio signals. When I got the kernel, then flashed an ICS ROM to the phone, that's where it removed my radio signals.

If you'd read what I put, none of that worked. I know radio isn't meant to work on a GSM ROM, buying a whole new phone was a silly suggestion of you.

first try flashing a zeusc(r800x) rom, because when you have a zeus(r800i) rom installed the radio won't work the way your are explaning.

Can you link me to it? I really don't feel like getting the wrong file yet again.

Just want to clarify have you tried flashing the 2.3.3 Verizon R800x FTF? When you mention 2.3.3/2.3.4 flashed firmwares I am guessing you mean that? If you have flashed successfully and still having issues then I dont know off hand why it wouldnt work just FTFing (lol) back.

that is because it is flashed from recovery
if you don't have recovery flash the boot.img in the zip using fastboot, then powerup the phone and press vol- during bootup when the notifaction light is on

Did you try flashing markypythons ICS converter? If you did, then flash R800x's baseband.

Yes I've flashed the FTF files. No luck doing so. DubleJay I have it, yet I haven't flashed it yet. The problem I have is not able to find the baseband to flash for this phone in specific.
No one's figured anything about my charging issue yet?

Have you tried flashing the basebands of the 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 ftf files.... But what happened when you flashed the 2.3.3 ftf file?

Baseband version was within the FTF file but didn't show up on the phone. :/ its so frustrating.
I'm honestly more curious about my charging issue right now. I'm tired of flip flopping batteries.

2.3.4??? Xperia Play 4g

Does anyone know, or hear anything about an official AT&T 2.3.4 update for the Xperia play 4g and when it will be released?? i had got a random "a software update is availible" message today and when i went to pc companion to download it i was already up to date... ._. and i know Ics isnt due till late April early May for general release...so i thought maybe it was 2.3.4
I've been running 2.3.4 on my xperia play for some time now. I didn't hack it or anything I use AT&T too.
but my Xperia is a Google IO play I donna if that changes things.
Yeah I connect it to my pc and try to update it but it says it's up to date. I have a r800at as well.

Hello,
Have you uninstalled or frozen any system apps? If so, SE will not let you download any updates. You must restore them for it to work. Either that, or they took the update down. I don't see why they would do that though...
I got the same message yesterday as Black_reign32. I went into the "about phone" section under settings and clicked "check for updates" and it didn't find anything. Now, this could be due to the fact that I am using my r800at on t-mobile. I don't have root, so I haven't frozen any system apps, but I have uninstalled a couple of the apps that came pre-loaded that I didn't want, mainly the att specific ones.
US sexplay owners get the shaft. I have the R800X on Verizon and we're stuck on 2.3.3 as well. You don't realize how far you're left behind until you see that all the goodies (Snapdragon Game Command, PlayStation Store, etc.) Can only be had on devices that have 2.3.4.
I don't want to root, but I don't think I can hold out until next May to get official ICS.
Does, the R800AT have PlayStation pocket?

Well, the deal with ICS is that Sony is releasing it, just like they released 2.3.4. This doesn't mean that AT&T or Verizon will release ICS for our phone. I would recommend either the Sony 2.3.4 signed ROM or the wotanserver.com one. From my understanding, they are the same thing. I'm using the one from wotanserver on my r800at and it's working great! PlayStation Pocket, 2.3.4, the Gamepad works great and no AT&T bloatware. I only root mine to move the big apps off of the internal memory that won't allow it otherwise.

SE said that they're bringing ICS to Verizon and AT&T Xplays by mid-May. Yes the update is coming from SE, but Verizon and AT&T must "approve" it (translation: add their bloatware and shovelware).

Actually you can if you mean the generic north American rom. Its signed so you can install it just fine. That's what I did. I have an AT&T r800at and got rid of the stock firmware and went with the generic. No bloatware for me plus 2.3.4

So, how did you upgrade? Just download the signed rom and install it through the PC Companion software? Did this wipe your phone/data, or did it preserve it like an OTA would? Also, did it change your R800AT to an R800i or a, similar to how installing certain roms change that? Sorry for all the questions and thanks!

Used flashtool to flash the file once downloaded to my PC. Yes it wiped the phone clean so backup anything you need before you flash. I backed up the stock games from the at&t version cause they are different on the generic rom. It changed my model to a r800a from r800at. Let me know if you have any other questions.

How did you back up the games? I assume this process applies to other games that I have purchased/downloaded. Is this the DRM stuff I have heard people talk about?
Do you think changing to an r800a would effect anything important? I am using the play on T-mobile now. I wouldn't think so.
Also, I am assuming this would prevent any OTA to ICS. But, on the same hand, I guess I can always download the signed ROM and re-flash it just like this one.
Do you need root for any of this? I don't currently have root.
Thanks again!

Do you still have HSPA+ support on your phone after shifting from r800at to r800a firmware? And even if the H+ doesn't show up at the top, did your data speeds change at all?
is the 2.3.4 generic rootable? if so ill have no problem restoring **** cuz i use titanium backup
Backedup the stock games by rooting then moving the apk from system/app to the SD card. Once I flashed to generic I reinstalled it using that apk. Use the set InstallLocaton trick to clear up internal space.
You can still root the generic with zerg.
I still get the H+ and didn't notice any change in speeds. Still as fast as with stock.

[Q] Help with Flashing my Xperia play R800i

Ok hey all So i been reading here on xda for some time.
And i have been reading about the development for the our play and the nice progress the devs been doing with ICS.
My phone is a R800i
Baseband: 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
Version: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Locked Bootloader
Not rooted
No sim lock works with all providers never been locked.
I havn't flashed so much phones in my day, some wm mobiles, and iphones and a lg gt540
So i need some help with what to do
I know the first thing is to unlock bootloader
but after that? If some one could point me to the files i need, just the specefic files just for my phone. And a step by step what to do like flash a rom first then kernel or kernel first then rom and if there is any other files i should use before i flash rom/kernel
And if some nice people could give me some hints on the best ICS rom.
I want this either this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524159
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404712
those two seems to the most stable atm. Or if anyone other have suggestions like CM9 or something like that
Cheers!

You said it's sim unlocked, right? If you bought one that isn't carrier locked, you can unlock your bootloader using the guide on the Sony mobile site. After unlocking the bootloader, flash a cwm kernel, and all the possibilities have then been opened.
Seriously though, the guides are easy to find. Google is your friend. Just tell it to search xda specifically.

Hey yea i been reading alot and i think i know now how it all works think i'll wait for some time. People seem to have alot problems with battery drain =/ Seems it can be fixed through Setcpu. And how about the overlock? i did read that some kernel have the phone overclocked to 2.0 ghz. Does it shorten the life of the phone? Not the battery life but the phone's life?

Is yours carrier locked? If so, you need to unlock the bootloader with something like omnius or setool.
@virtualxp - Overclocking anything too high will always shorten it's life. Going to 1.4-1.5 ghz shouldn't make a difference, but 2ghz is very high.
For battery drain issues, there are solutions. A lot of people noticed the battery getting worse after the 2.3.4 update, so either they're sticking with older firmware, or mixing builds and kernels.
My phone for example has the 2.3.4 (.42) firmware with a stock kernel from 2.3.3, and a baseband belonging to a separate build altogether. And I managed to combine those without an unlocked bootloader.. Mind you, it was a pain in the ass doing it without getting stuck with boot loop. But this way, I have less battery issues, and I can still use the themes and mods made for the .42 build.

In flashtool, there's an option to exclude the kernel and another for baseband. I flashed one firmware, then flashed another while excluding kernel, and then again while excluding the kernel and baseband, using three different ftf files.
For applying themes and mods without unlocking the bootloader, I used the T.E.A.M. locked bootloader recovery installer, and flashed them with the update.zip files through that recovery. You can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840

[Q] No Phone service 2.3.4 update

I am in Canada, I have a Verizon R800x Xperia Play that I bought on eBay just for using as an mp3 player, game player and camera. I would really love to have the 720p video function afforded by the 2.3.4 update.
I don't use this as a phone, there is no phone service on it.
When I try to update, it turns wi-fi off so I assume the only way to get the OTA update is to have phone service.
I have read through some forums about the nandroid backup and how if you don't have the proper kernel then the camera, wifi etc might not work which is obviously not ideal.
My question is this:
Is there any way I can get the official 2.3.4 update on my play without unlocking my bootloader?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I just realized the title of this thread might imply that I have no phone service after updating to 2.3.4. Sorry if there is any confusion.

The problem here is, you would need an unlocked bootloader in order to flash the kernel to get to 2.3.4. It only costs $24 though (I'm actually unlocking mine on Friday) so I would recommend taking that option, then flashing whatever kernel or rom you want.
Or you could wait until someone is able to make a 2.3.4 .ftf file for use with FlashTool. It will definitely take less time to unlock your bootloader, but waiting for the .ftf is free.
Ah, see I was not sure yet if someone had made an .ftf file yet. Thanks for the replies, I will just wait until the ftf is available for now.

Root with locked bootloader - anyone tried?

So over on the Xperia S forums they have this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742992 which is a guide to root the Xperia S with a locked bootloader. Has anyone tried those steps with the ion and a locked bootloader?

By just flashing a ftf no not really. Just make sure you have enough battery life and you should be good.
I tried it with my ion the other day, but there was something like a partation size error.
Tried today using just the at&t GB ftf but it wouldn't work on step two. Said permission denied. Might need the ICS firmware like how the guide says for the Xperia S. The ics ftf posted in the ion boards gives me (and it seems others with locked bootloaders) sin verification errors.
Damn.

So I found this site, http://bbs.gfan.com/android-4269369-1-1.html
According to it some people have successfully rooted the AT&T Ion somehow
You'll need something like Chrome to translate it.
It didnt work for me, said something about the ADB Shell
Any other info about that other than running that exe?
Nope, it just gives you an interface that says ROOT or UNROOT. This is the website for the program http://www.unlockroot.com/
You would see ways to root here on XDA before seeing it in a program like that I would imagine.
That program doesn't list the LT28 on its supported list either. Doesn't work with the LT26i either though it says it does.
I hope someone finds a method, I'm also hoping that we see some development on the ion.

Well once we get a FTF we can use of ICS we can try using the same method that was used on the Xperia S to get root with a locked bootloader. But it needs ICS to do the exploit.

Probably a stupid question but, what would it take to make an FTF? I mean like people are always making .zips of ROMs that can be flashed via recovery. Would it be any different besides for the method of getting it on the device?

Well we have to get the files from SUS or PC companion of an official release to make into an FTF. Right now ICS isn't being pushed out anywhere so we are stuck waiting.

[R800x] Questions About Overclocking

Hey guys!
I have a Verizon Sony XPERIA PLAY [r800x] that I'd like to overclock to increase my FP/S while playing emulators.
I've seen the guides, and I would need to root, unlock the bootloader, and then finally install a custom ROM.
My question is, is it possible to unlock the bootloader of a Verizon Sony XPERIA PLAY [r800x]?
From what I've read on this forum, the only way to do this, is doing it through a paid service, and they will be able to unlock it for me.
A site I came across was http://unlock-bootloader.com/
Would that service actually work for me? If not, can someone please list one that does, or is even better than that one?
~Thanks for any and all help! It's really appreciated
Yes, that unlocking service should work for an R800x. I've been told the owner is hard to reach anywhrere but on his Google Talk though. FYI, you only need to install a custom kernel, not necessarily a custom rom to gain access to overclocking. That being said, you'd still need an unlocked bootloader. Be prudent when overlocking, as well. It's not fun frying your phone

Thank you for your response!
I got my R800X's bootloader unlocked. I flashed the Doomkernel onto it with no problems. I flashed the phone to 2.3.3 first though, since when I go to update the phone through setting, it doesn't say there's a new update available. I'm not sure why…

But, after installing FPSE, I noticed that the performance of the emulator actually went down, even after Overclocking!
The gamepad on the Xperia was severely delayed as well, and unresponsive. I had to constantly spam buttons in the emulator for it to respond.
Those two problems were most apparent in one game, and not others. The strange thing is though that, while on Stock FW, that particular game ran with no problems at all, and no gamepad delay.
So, I wanted to know if there's a Doomkernel compatible with the Xperia's 2.3.2 FW?
Unless there's a better kernel for Overclocking my Xperia Play that's compatible 2.3.2?
I think the problem is that the device doesn't want to update from 2.3.2, and that's why I faced the problems that I did. I think it wants to stay on 2.3.2, or I'll suffer… lol
DooMKerneL should be used on the international 2.3.4 firmware to be most effective (eg. 4.0.2.A.0.42 or higher)

Since my XPERIA PLAY won't update through the normal method of going to "Settings>About Phone>Software Update>Check For Updates" since the Check For Updates option is grayed out. Should I download the international 2.3.4 firmware from here, and then update my XPERIA PLAY with flashtool?
Also, is this the right FW you were referring to? "R800i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic UK"
That's the correct firmware, but it's a bit tricky putting it on an R800x. You need to extract system.sin from the FTF file (using 7zip or winrar, etc.) then flash it in fastboot (fastboot flash system system.sin). There should be a guide somewhere on how to do it, but don't just go rushing into it lest you think you've "bricked" your phone (that happens way too often around here)
You can also flash that system.sin with fastboot command
Fastboot flash system system.sin
I do it all the time and it works. Same with kernel.sin

Your right, my apologies. Also I thought that as a CDMA version we couldnt flash the firmware you specified? THat by flashing it we would lose phone funtionality and the homescreen?
Isn't there a CDMA patch or something, to allow data? I don't follow to closely to such things, as I don't use data on mine anyway
There is a CDMA patch specifically for the cyanogenmod based roms. Generally flashing a GSM rom the homescreen is blank and only the notification drop down works. Xdarkmario released a patch that supposedly miss these GSM roms work I. The sense thy you will have a working homescreen but no working CDMA. I tried this patch last night and it was the same results. The only GSM Rom I Yvette found that will give you a full functioning rom without working cell phone ability is true ancestor. So currently flashing any GSM rom leaves you with either no home screen thus useless or flashing true ancestor working rom but no cdma functions.

When you flashed true ancestor are you using the GSM kernel or the CDMA kernel for 2.3.3? With Xdarkmario's CDMA patch.

I am flashing T.A and staying on CDMA kernel 2.3.3, and xdarkmario's patch. But to be honest you can flash T.A. without having to flash xdarkmarios patch. Found this out months ago. For some reason his is the only ROM that a R800x user can flash and still have a working home screen. All others cause the home screen to be missing.
