I am not rooted. Have yet to figure it out. I have rooted everything I had but this device. Followed albert wertz method for my last device. It was fine but maybe its a samsung update or a win update; I am not sure what the issue is. I am just trying to transfer files from cell>pc vice versa. Drivers are installed and trying the samsung toolkit too but it apparently thinks that debugging mode isn't checked cause it gets stuck there everytime.

What I did was turn off my phone then plug in the usb cable then power the phone on. That's what worked for me.

Hope I'm giving the right answer. this is what i found in the C drive under the samsung toolkit folder
Samsung_USB_Driver_1.5.15.0
drivers
I can't post links yet, but do a search on google "samsung l710 drivers" and hit the first link. It should take you to Samsung's website and you can get the drivers there.
Also, check if the device is in the right mode by doing the following:
On the dialer, dial *#7284# (*#PATH#).
Set the UART to PDA.
Click on Qualcomm USB Settings and change it to MTP+ADB.
If it was set to RMNET + DM + MODEM for example, checking the USB Debugging option will not enable debugging.

I'm dying for any type of help here. For the life of me I can't get my phone to be recognized in download mode. I was using stock EC05, it didn't work. Rooted via oneclickroot. Unrooted with RFS/StockRecovery. Manually updated to EI22. It has not worked through any of this. Not on any computer or OS (though admittedly only been Windows XP, Vista, and 7). Not with any different cable. Not with any different port. I've reinstalled the drivers hundreds of times as well. Windows recognizes it when it's off. When it's powered up and connected in debug mode there are no issues whatsoever. The end result I'm looking for is rooted EI22. So a few questions:
1. What exactly is download mode and how is it different from having the device on/off?
My phone is obviously not communicating what it is in this state.
2. What driver/s does the PC look for to communicate with download mode?
3. Are there any workarounds to getting download mode to work (in other words, could mine just be bugged in some way that can be updated)?
Thanks in advance!
With the phone off, press and hold the 1 key on the keyboard. Now add pressing and holding the power button until download mode pops up. This is used to Odin or Heimdall files in. If you are on EC05 rooted you can simply backup with Titanium Backup and flash a custom EI22 ROM that will be prerooted. Then you can upgrade the modem if you like.

Dang kenny always hogging the q&a help id like to feel like a hero sometimes too XD. Btw he didn't ask how to get into DLmode he can't get odin to com.
Anways try popping out the sd card and battery using the computer as the power source and get into download mode. Odin seems to like certain phones in that state. I think download mode is a path to the phones brain cavity ^^ kinda like a zombie willing to do what ever you tell it (odin).

HaHa, B. I didn't see where he put the phone into download mode in the OP. This one is all yours. I will go watch football and leave Q&A in your capable hands tomight.

Thanks for the quick replies!
I've tried sans battery, SD card, and any combination thereof. I'm completely stumped! My last attempts were reinstalling drivers with the phone in each state. Still no luck. By the by - I can say with some confidence that:
Odin is not the problem. With the phone up in debug mode Odin recognizes it just fine.
My PC could be the problem, but that would mean so were all the others I've tried.
Guess I'm just curious if maybe download mode changes voltage to the USB or some other anomaly. If that were the case maybe a separate, powered port might be the answer. I'll keep digging!
So your saying you can't get Odin to com while in download mode?
With any different cable or USB port.....
I remember having a similiar issue when you have in download mode does it read as an unknown device in device manager on your PC?

A good idea would be to let windows install the drivers it could be the drivers your installing are bad. If it comes up as unknown there is a process to get it to install custom drivers but id have to figure it out again I forget it exactly.

Custom drivers may be the solution. The drivers installed work perfectly. Depending on the state of the phone, it identifies itself in different ways to the PC. Being off, on as charging or storage, and on as debug all return with different identities, and Windows loads the appropriate drivers. Download mode only ever gets "Unknown Device" and Windows seems to think that no other inf file contains information about the device (obviously false since those same files allow it to be identified as an Android device)... Leading me to believe that Download mode is not identifying itself correctly to the PC.
Again thanks for all the help this is giving me a new search angle.

Did you try "update drivers" from Windows with phone in usb debugging on mode? There are 5 drivers it needs and may take awhile to load the last one. The other option is to try Heimdall which loads it's own drivers. It is in the second post of this thread:

B, you handled this perfectly...sorry for butting in.
Yep okay windows recognises it as unknown I know exactly how to work around that. You have to go into the device manager and unistall the software it tried to install for the unknown device. Once you do that advance install the drivers you have and it should recognise it make sure you don't unplug and odin goes thru the first time otherwise you'll have to do it again. also make sure it says successfully installed and your hardware is ready to use. Good luck.

Heimdall also seems to rely on Windows first recognizing the device which is the only step I'm having problems with. Perhaps someone could connect in download mode and give me the specs on what driver/s windows loaded (I'm using XP, 32-bit)? I have 6 instances reserved for my device already. I'm attempting to manually install each device that shows up while in debug now. Let's see how that goes.
For my win xp 32 it shows three drivers installing the Samsung usb composite device, Gadget Serial Component ( I think its that didn't write it down) and the Samsung mobile modem with these three Odin coms instantly. Ill send you the drivers I use it may make a difference.
Sent from my OG Epic
I'm getting an "installation package could not be opened" error. However, I paired your earlier suggestions and now it works! Here's what I did:
Connected in debug mode so the Samsung Android USB Composite Device showed up. I then had Heimdall install its driver. I notice this DOES replace the PC device driver from ssad...(something) to WinUSB. Then I uninstalled the driver installation package. I was using SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe that came with Kies. I turned the device off and booted into Download Mode, then reinstalled the driver package. Somewhere along the lines those last 2 instances (Samsung USB Composite Device, Samsung Mobile Modem) decided to show up!! Finally, I'm rooted again. Thank you all so much!
And if anyone was curious, there is a difference between the modes. Phone off or powered on and connected reports a power of 96mA. When it's in Download Mode, it's at 50mA! I used the utility USBDeview for the statistics. Also attached a screen of the basics reported on my PC. I highlighted all the stuff involved in the driver installation, the phone was off. I hope this helps anyone else.
Thanks again!!
Nice job everyone, especially Biggoron for being on top of this.

Years later in a world full of HTC Ones, Galaxy S4s and Nexus 7 part two, one warrior emerges to a post which has been untouched for two long year's...to present the second half of this...dilema.
How was that for an entrance? I have the same issue as our original poster here. I tried the solution that helped him solve his case and all it did was completely make my girls D700 unseeable by ODIN even when on USB Debugging and on. Download mode is just giving me the crappy "Unknown Device" excuse. Got this phone MINTish for $20 as my girls temporary phone, and for 3 weeks since I got it have been stuck on this one. This and my HTC Evo 4G LTE have been my worst devices in history.
I got a BlackBerry USB as some recommend, installed the actual drivers, installed them ziagwhachumucallit drivers and no good.
I'm in hell with this one...
Any of you guys wanna help out on this one?

Yes I did lol, I gave it about 5 minutes then I unplugged everything and tried again, I actually got a little farther and it said <Waiting for usb debugging to be enabled>.
But now it's not even being detected when I first open the root kit. At the top it lists no devices
Edit: Uploaded a screenshot of what i have now.. It's showing two devices and another pic showing where I'm stuck with the usb debugging.

Heya, got an issue with a Galaxy Nexus phone. Phone does not seem to get any reception, I've attempted to add the Rogers network multiple times, and still either it says error or there is no reception at all. It is an unlocked phone, as the lock image shown upon restarting is unlocked, and as indicated in fastboot mode.
I figured it is the radio that is messed up. So I attempted to return to stock on my friend's phone. However, USB cable does not function properly, as I have attempted fastboot multiple times such as "fastboot devices" with the proper drivers installed etc. Using AirDroid to move the files, I've entered recovery mode only for it to load to the red triangle and then it restarts.
Also have repeated the steps after factory resetting. I am out of ideas guys, hoping maybe someone can provide some insight. Greatly appreciate it!!
Galaxy Nexus is the GSM one, not LTE. Thanks again.
-Thiefa
The red triangle is the stock recovery.
Having ADB working does not mean fastboot will work as well, they require different drivers, check in Device Manager for something like Android 1.0 or Android, then update drivers for it. There is a nice guide in this section by Jubakuba.

The drivers are a pain the the arse.
Actually, i did that for my N7, install the drivers and the toolkit never saw the light of the day anymore.
Btw regarding the naked drivers, plug the phone in > device manager > update drivers > then direct to the naked drivers folder right?
See the problem is I've updated the drivers and everything.
Whether in Odin, I don't see the phone pop up when I plug it in.
And no IMEI shows when I use a command prompt and attempted fastboot devices.
I'm just going to tell my friend to return it to Bell.
Thanks guys.
Hey guys i've been looking through alot of google and can't seem to come up with anything so i turn to you awesome people.
My friend got a Galaxy Nexus GSM and he bought it with a boot loop problem. The phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked. I know because i can go to CWM recovery and also theres the unlock sign on it. However I can't get my computer to recognize it what so ever not even mount the storage. I figure i need to get the drivers to install but i need it to be recognized in device manager to do it through a rootkit. I tried to install the ADB drivers but also got no luck. I then tried to get to ODIN for it to work but ODIN won't recognize it either. Is there any way to install the drivers so i can put on a ROM on this. I think the person he bought it from formatted everything and messed it up. Is there anyway i can install the drivers without getting it to recognize first? I tried it in windows 7 and in windows 8. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

You need to get adb to work with your device, which you can do in a custom recovery. You don't need to have USB debugging enabled, you would if you were booting into the OS, but not the recovery.
You can get drivers setup while in recovery or fastboot just as easy as if you were booted into the OS, so no you don't need another device.

Isn't that for the nexus 4? And I did pay attention to section A but it told me how to install the drivers which is the same way as every other tutorial I've looked at. My device doesn't show up on my computer and I can't install their way. As for the fastboot driver installation idk what their talking about. I followed the instructions though and got no results. I didn't do the whole thing cause for part C I need the original rom for galaxy nexus and also I don't know if the platform tools zip is for my device so I haven't gone through with it just yet. I'm sorry it's not my phone so I don't want to mess it up even further. I've read about the part with it being in recovery mode with the volume up + power option but I'm at work and haven't tried that yet but I doubt that will work since the phone is clean. Can u please be a little more specific there's 99 pages that I have to go through for that sticky. If u can't it's ok I'll just have to go through it next week. You reboot the device into bootloader/fastboot mode, then you connect the USB, and there's no sign at all that a USB device has been installed?
Remove all drivers, reboot, and start over. Get a tool for Windows that allows you to really dig on all of the installed drivers and remove all Nexus devices drivers permanently. Rant: Umm, Windows sucks bad. Thanks Linus!

Remove all drivers, reboot, and start over. Get a tool for Windows that allows you to really dig on all of the installed drivers and remove all Nexus devices drivers permanently. Rant: Umm, Windows sucks bad. Thanks Linus!

I've done it both ways just to ensure it wasn't something that simple. I uninstalled all drivers i can possibly find theres non no where i used CC to look for more and device deview and even unistalled the java se and eclipse and android SDK and all the packages and installed them again and still nothing. My nexus 4 however recognizes both in adb and fastboot ......
Anything at all? Anyone?

Well, maybe you could try omapflash. If you can't get several PCs to see the device, then something's wrong with the USB port?
Not even on Linux?

I did a little looking up about omapflash and from what i can see so far there needs to be drivers installed first. I may be wrong but i have to do some more research on it and i dont have a linux pc my laptop is down thanks to a power pin connector pin being pulled out. and i dont know if the device port is good or bad i can get a charge but that doesnt mean its fine. What if i get another device and install drivers via that and then try to get it to recognize? would that work?

To really make sure that the issue isn't on the host side but rather the USB port on the device? Yeah, that would rule it out.
Also, I just remembered: you're not using the USB ports of your PC case are you? Make sure you're using the motherboards' own USB ports.

And no im not using case ports at all i use them for charging and thats all i know at least that those arent reliable.
Windows 8 64-bit...drivers install...stuck
even I am stuck on the same roadblock. have my GNex stuck on the google logo. can access recovery mode though (TWRP 2.5.0.0). Now i just upgraded my PC to Windows 8 64-bit and cant seem to be able to install drivers.
the problem is that almost all the methods require:
1. GNex to be connected with USB Debugging ON
2. install ADB Drivers
3. get into Fastboot or Recovery
4. install Bootloader Drivers
since i cant get past the Google logo on my GNex...i cant perform Steps 1 & 2.
and if i directly try to install the bootloader drivers the OS returns an error (yellow exclamation next to the installed driver)
Added pictures to help explain better.
Thnx in advance.

SOLVED (Dont know how but it worked):
1. Factory reset (TWRP)
2. Installed an old ROM which was already on the GNex
3. Restart...it gets stuck at the Google logo...remove battery
4. TWRP - Factory reset
5. reboot...
phone wont boot up... usb port is broken and when i factory restore it with stock recovery it just goes into a blank screen with a blue indicator light ...

I Don't believe the Stock recovery lets flashing any zips. If the USB port is truly broken hardware wise, go for repair.
Perseus is correct. The only update.zip stock recovery will work with is for an OTA.
Without the usb port I'm afraid you are outta luck. Are you certain the port is bad? You can still charge right?
Edit, sorry bout the name! Auto correct snuck up on me there!

I don't know about that, might it be you don't have the correct drivers, can you verify the USB is getting power? And for getting a stock .zip to flash, can't you just take your sdcard into an adapter, place it on there, and place it back into your phone and flash from there? Or am I missing something and it's not that simple?
Have you tried another cable? Not a cheap replacement either, but a good quality data cable?

When you connect to a Windows PC, what do you see in Device Manager ?
When you reinstall drivers, just uninstalling the driver pkg won't work. You still have to uninstall or update drivers through device manager, otherwise it'll continue to use the ones originally installed.

From Windows, uninstall everything related to Samsung or KIES. Reboot the PC then try connecting the phone. Even if the Driver Wizard does not pop up, Manually go into Device manager, Right Click and go to the Driver Details of this unknown Device. Manually install the driver.
