Hi All,
I'm one of the unlucky ones stuck in the middle of the power struggle between the Chinese government and Google, and having my Gmail and Market rights rescinded (I only bought the damn phone yesterday!). Having scanned the forums here, it appears that one way in which I can log into the Gmail service and Market on my phone is to edit my hosts file. However, despite the fact my phone is rooted, and that I can pull, and edit, the hosts file, I CANNOT push it back onto the device. It just doesn't appear back in the folder, and after I have reset the device, the original, unedited hosts file makes an unwelcome reappearance. I've tried the adb stuff through Terminal on my Mac, editing it through Astro and through Estrongs File Manager, and it fails each time. I'm just stumped. I would love to get this sorted out if anyone else can help me?
Cheers!
Sorry, but bump!
Anyone out there help? In a similar boat?
me too!
I am having the same exact problem.
hxxp://hiapk.com/bbs/thread-278678-1-1.html
maybe this is a solution but I can't read chinese!
I could weep....
I can read Chinese, and have followed the instructions TO THE LETTER (it says to use Root Explorer, mount the file system as read/write, change the file, mount again to read only, and reboot). Every time I do, the hosts file just simply vanishes from the file list. I reboot the phone, connect to Wifi, and the damned original hosts file reappears again. Can anyone help??????
Try this one...
it just fixed my phone!

Could you post that link again? It didn't come through properly.

you go to install .zip from sd card, then choose .zip from sd card
Managed to find how (I'm using GOT OR)
Just put the file in update folder of Open Recovery, boot to GOT OR go find miscellaneous and find the update file there...run it.
and it gave "error (status 4)"

Tried manually replacing the host file using root explorer...doesn't work as well.

using WiFi without the host file is fine, everything work normal..but not through mobile network..
GFW huh...
I am trying to change my boot animation on cm7 and have tried to change it to a pc36img file and it says parsing file. I also have tried to move it into the systems media folder using rootexplorer but I get a message stating its a read only file. I tried changing the permissions and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Im sure Im missing something here.
On root explorer, press on the top right where it says "mount" before you paste, it'll let you paste it.
Then just set permissions.

You have to make sure that you moved the file to the correct place, that the permissions match the original's, and that the boot animation was built properly. Try another and see if you get the same result. If you do, you're doing something wrong. If it works, there's something wrong with the boot animation you're trying to use.
You said it was a PC36IMG, so I'm thinking that it's the file. Usually boot animations are either moved manually or made into a flashable zip - splashscreens come as PC36IMGs. If you can attach the file, I'll take a look at it for you.

If you're manually placing it in the /system/media/ folder, which is what I recommend doing, then the file needs to be named bootanimation.zip and contain ONLY the png files and the required txt info file.
As plainjane said, splash screens are usually what are flashed via PC36IMG.zip files.
disk space?
it keeps tellin me i dont have enough disk space to copy and paste? i deleted the old boot anime, so how could i possibly not have enough??

Do you have a bunch of apps, maybe delete some that you dont use
?
K will try thanks would moveing apps to sd free space?

I had memory problems as well my first time applying a boot animation. I suggest using root explorer to delete some system wallpapers that you don't use. Should free up enough space for your big bootanimation

FYI, NEVER delete anything from your system folders that is currently working until you have a replacement that you know for a fact works. I usually rename the file with (backup) appended to the file name. That way I can go back if the file I am replacing it with is junk.
It dosent matter if its just a boot animation... I cut my phone back on before i got it workin

Uhh.....what?
1. Place the bootanimation.zip file below into /system/media/
2. DO NOT change the name at all.
3. Move preexisting bootanimation file somewhere into your SD card so that you don't lose it.
4. Then reboot your phone.
I know for a fact that the file is a good file because I've used it before. If your phone still screws up then you're most likely not putting it in the right location. The zip file size is just under 5MB. So make sure you have at least that much space free in your phone's internal storage.
I included thumbnail previews of the bootanimation. (I don't remember who created this bootanimation but it was not I.)
Edit: I think it was Dysgenic, or something like that, that created this bootanimation.
What i was saying is it doesent matter if you delete all boot animations and cut your phone on. It just defaults to a very simple android one... And that i had got it workin.

Oh ok. Glad to hear it.
i'm having problem transfering .mkv video files from my pc to my phone. Everytime i transfer a file , windows pops up "windows stopped working" and then just closed everything out. I tried to transfer small .mkv video files and samething happened. But if i transfer .mp4 or any other file, it transfered just fine. I reinstalled the samsung drivers a few times and it still doesn't work. It will work through kies but i get no audio. The only option for me is to take my microsd out and transfer the .mkv movies over and put the microsd back in the phone. Anyone knows how to fix this problem?
I have the same problem with this, transferring mkv files, while connected via USB, shows an error.
Any solution for this yet ?

Just simple rename your .mkv to. .MP4 file via winrar or etc.
and rename again in your phone to .mkv via file explorer

Do you have Kies installed on your pc? You can go in import/export tab, import a mvk file to your phone and see. I did it that way and it worked. I thought I didn't get audio because of Kies but I got no audio when I transfer it to my microsd card either. Maybe the phone doesn't bluray ripped audio or something. But you can try do it throughkKies and see if yours work.
try another file type not video format.. .txt, zip, rar,or something
This is a windows error type for .mkv files. It has to do with the divx codecs trying to render a preview thumbnail for the file. Google mkv divx windows codec transferring problem... it will tell you how to resolve... long story short... divx codec pack needs to be uninstalled. Then reinstall and disable thumbnail preview... worked like a charm for me.

Yeah I did that, checked the box "disable thumbnails" (but somehow I still have thumbnails) and when I transfer it, it tells me the size of the file is too big. A transfer of 100mb .mkv file worked
also tried to rename to .txt .doc and so on, still didnt work

I too had been able to transfer a smaller file... it was the larger ones that crashed. I uninstalled the divx codec AND player, reinstalled and disabled thumbnail preview at the program level...NOT the windows folder view level. If you do it in just the windows folder view level, you will get the same problem. It is tied directly to the divx codec. Hope this helps you out.
Used dropbox to get mkv files to my phone.

Uninstall divx from your pc, it will then transfer fine.
I just put my microsd card in my computer and do it that way

...ok, this has me stumped and I figured someone here might know the answer.
I am trying to change the call connect and the call disconnect tones on my S4. My phone is of course rooted, and I see the sound files located in /system/media/audio/ui - they are in .ogg format. I see the following files (call related):
Call_Connect.ogg
TW_Call_Disconnect.ogg
I replaced both files with the sounds of my choice (same file name, same permissions, same format)...but...when I dial out or disconnect, I get the S4 default connect tone / disconnect tone. I also did a complete factory reset...same result, WTF?
EDIT: Also, I did make sure that the system folder was mounted and writable...
Ok, I want to offer a little more info...
I have:
Made sure the files have the same name. (there are no dupe's in the directory either)
Made sure the files have the same permissions that all other files in that directory have.
Verified the files were updated by listening to them via my root explorer.
Rebooted 6519845619685465196847 times.
Cleared phone app cache, nova launcher cache, and even did a factory reset (dalvik, cache, data).
I even removed the files from that directory all together (which should have killed the call connect and call disconnect notifications)...but the stock ones STILL PLAY...WTF?
Used ADB to open a shell session and LOGCAT to see if I could spot something happening while I placed a call, and came up with nothing relevant, which is weird because if LOGCAT is supposed to show everything the phone is doing, then why is there no information on what sounds are being used for those events...
It is as if the files exist or are cached somewhere else...but I cannot locate any other .ogg or audio file anywhere else on the device at all.
This is driving me insane.

Ok, it wasn't in that file, but it was in the SecPhone.apk file. However, editing that file immediately caused my phone to crap itself. I replaced the two files in the archive and then put that modified file back into /system/app and then rebooted and wiped dalvik and cache. When I got the phone back up, I tried using the phone, and instantly it (over and over I might add) said that com.android.phone has stooped working...oh yeah, and my modified sounds didn't play either.
Guess I'm stuck with the default unless I either learn a lot more about working with Android, or someone hooks me up with some knowledge, or better yet, an app that someone has that can successfully change this.

Ah that actually makes more sense
But.....
Give me the audio files and your ORIGINAL SecPhone.apk and i shall sprinkle some pixie dust on them and watch them merge as one might even use it myself depending on what they sound like (BTW put the audio files and SecPhone.apk into a folder and zip that folder then attach the zip)

I am trying to open / save a mpeg 4 video file that I converted from an avi file that I compressed into a zip file. I email the file to myself through gmail. When I click on the file I get a message that says I can't open or save this file. The same file can be opened on my desktop. I have the same issue on my phone which is also an android. I am running kitkat on the Nexus & Jellybean on my phone. Maybe I'm missing something or do I need a specific app to open the file ?

Last I recall avi files dont compress much from a zip.
Plus you would have to deal with the zip file, lets say 300mb, then extract it, to another 300mb or so.
I think you would be better off just sending the avi file as is.
All you need to do is connect your nexus as a media device through the storage settings. (Make sure USB debugging is turned off in developer options). And then drag the uncompressed version over to your nexus from your computer. No need to email it if you have a computer. Make a folder called movies (don't have to just easier). And then download mxplayer from the play store of you haven't already.

Google is forbid us to save potential harmful attachment, including zip files.
So, If you insist using email, you need to open web browser and go to gmail website, login, and download the attached file.
Your file will be downloaded as downloadfile.bin.. You need to rename using file explorer to donwloadfile.zip, and then open & extract that file.
I'm using kitkat, and this method works for me.
