I'm going to use my OG Evo 8GB sd card in my GS3 I just got. Should I reformat the entire sd in exFat? Format in my rooted OG evo? I'm using AmonRa in my evo. So Just asking some quick questions before I do anything. I tried to google the info but came up blank.
Thanks in advance.

I'd back up all your pictures, music, and etc first. Then format it.

Let the GS3 format do it or with Win7 and format to exFat?

Yes, backup all of your files and format it first in your computer. I would then install it and format it in the phone. When I first got mine I just used the sd card from my OG Droid. It completely messed up my phone -- to the point Best Buy completely replaced it for free -- and the rep told me that the S3 has a "known issue" of having problems with sd cards formatted in other phones. I am not certain I believe it, but better safe than sorry.

Fat32 or exFAT in Win7?

I formatted mine FAT32. I know the S3 will not recognize a 64 gb sd card in exFAT because there have been a few threads about it. I am not sure if it is okay with a smaller card, but I know that FAT32 does work.

The S3 will recognize a card formatted as exFAT (my 64GB came formatted as exFAT) but the recoveries will not recognize exFAT. Since the OP was asking about an 8GB there would be no reason to use anything other than FAT32, and that does work in the phone and in the recoveries.

Now per the OP of the rom I was running my sd was partition to ext4. Reformatting should erase all that correct?

I was new once also and have asked some DUMB questions so ill follow his comment wish a reason. Root does not store on your SD card its all internal memory files. Only hand SD had in the root was flashing zip files from the card in the internal memory
I appreciate you being helpful and nice about it I no I'm a noob just didn't want to mess my phone up and after thinking about it I just pulled it and everything was fine.

I actually have a question regarding this.
I want to upgrade to a 16gb sd card and was wondering if there is a thread showing step by step instructions to do so.
I'm rooted and have a couple roms backed up along with titanium backing up my apps.
Do I really have to format the new sd card to fat 32? the 2gb sd card that came with it seems to work fine which I believe isn't formatted fat 32.
Is it really as easy as copying and pasting over??? I did not partition the sd card.
Also, after searching the forums I ran into a concerning thread regarding sd cards that DON'T work.... should I be worried?

If you want to transfer your files from the 2gb sd card to the 32 gb sd card just copy all files to the 32 gb sd card. Be sure to format the 32 gb sd to FAT32. I dont know how you didnt have to format your other card to fat32 unless you havent turned s-off. But anyways to format it to fat32 just plug in phone to computer( make sure you put phone on disk drive not charge only) and open "My computer"(shows all your drives ex. C:, D:, ect.) Right click on the drive that is your sd card and choose format. Make sure its in FAT32 and click format. You can do quick format too. Hope this helps

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking it was a lot harder than just copying over the files.
I have S-Off and I am pretty sure it's not formatted FAT32. I just checked the properties and it just says "FAT" and if I go to format it the selection at default shows "FAT" as well. But if standard procedure is to format to FAT32 I will on my next sd card.

SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 10 Only $54.51

Found this really nice deal on Amazon.
Just ordered one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007WTAJTO/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?redirect=true
I'd say be careful. If you check some reviews, I heard when they sell out, they replace it with Class 6.

You don't have to worry if you buy from Amazon. If you buy from a third party make sure it says "fulfilled by Amazon", you'll get super saver shipping and it will be exactly as described.
It's Sold by Amazon and
Fulfilled by Amazon,
so I'm not too worried about it.
If they ship something other than what I ordered, I'll just return the item
I've always had good experiences with Amazon, as long as the Items are Sold by Amazon directly, or if the Seller's Return Policy is the same as Amazon's.
I read through All 12 pages of Amazon reviews.
This Is a Class 10 Card.
The 4th reviewer was only stating his opinion. Every Reviewer (111 of 112) received a Class 10.
And the 4th reviewer most likely also received a Class 10.
I'm actually using this card right now. Ordered it Saturday, got it Wednesday. Works like a champ.
From Amazon, of course. The price was cheaper than ebay, with none of the risk.
Bought this card last night...hope it works in a 16 GB verizon s3...
I would live to get one of these but I'm in Canada. Anyone want to order one for me?

I can't see pics at work if you uploaded a pic with that, but does your computer read it? Does your phone say its corrupt? If everything says it's corrupt you can probably go to control panel -> hardware and do a full format (25/30 minutes). If nothing recognizes it at all, it's bad and you should request a replacement/refund.
had a hard time formatting the very first time. I am going to do a full format now, if that doesnt work, its going back. Thanks for the help.
Tried everything i know how...i am sending it back...thanks
Just received mine, and installed it in my S3.
Working Perfectly
This is what I did:
- I removed my SanDisk 32GB Class 6 card from my S3 after 'Unmounting' it.
- I saved All data on the card to a Folder on my pc
*the 32GB card is FAT32
- I installed the 64GB card into my S3, Formatted it, and Removed it after 'Unmounting' the card.
I transferrerd All data onto my New 64GB Card via my pc
- I installed the 64GB card into my S3 and Everything is Working Fine
*the 64GB card is exFAT
The 64GB card had 59.47GB Usable memory beforing transferring my folders over to it.

Your card arrived in the cardboard/blister packaging?
Don't know what the odds are of getting a defective card, taking into consideration the Seller, packaging, etc. But hopefully your replacement card will have no issue.
Have you tried to install the card into another device, if one is available?

You can but you can't format it using the Windows formatter. I used easeus software to format mine so that the card would be visible in clockwork recovery. exFAT is not supported there. Had a bit of a scare after formatting with the HP utility. Repartitioned in easeus but it would only read on the computer and it would FC system apps on my phone. Figured out that the partition needs to be primary not logical (what easus defaults to for new partitions) to work on the phone. All you have to do is pop the card in the computer, open easeus and format fat32. Don't mess with partitions

I didn't realize that Clockwork didn't read exFAT.
I just did a backup to my Internal storage cause as you say, CWM didn't see the ext. SD card.
I'm gonna reformat the card now.
Thanks.
Is this what I need to use to convert to FAT32?
http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-380-easeus-partition-master
I'm going to do the following:
- format 64GB card in my S3, which will delete all data
- install Easeus onto my pc
- put 64GB card into my pc
- open Easeus Utility, and format 64GB card to FAT32.
- reinstall Folders previously saved on my pc from my 32GB FAT32 card to the newly formatted 64GB card
- install card into my S3, and I should be good to go?
UPDATE:
- Formatted 64GB card to FAT32
- CWM recognizes card
All is well in the neighborhood

[Q] 64GB SD card unformattable in AOSP & AOKP

I have had my GS3 for a little over a month, rooted and had no issues, I installed another rom with no issue. Unfortunately when I tried to install a CM10 or AOKP rom, each say my ext sd card is damaged and needs to be formatted. I try to format, but it hangs and then just quits without completing the task.
I have tried formatting to fat32 on my PC, downloaded EaseUS Disk utility to format, but none seem to work. When I restore back into the previous rom, it still says damaged and then I can format and start over only in that non AOSP/AOKP rom.
I boot into recovery when the AOSP/AOKP roms are loaded and it wont even mount or format in recovery either.
Any ideas?

I think I read somewhere that in CM10/AOKP that it won't read/understand exFat very well.
So, formatting to Fat32 is definitely the way to go.
When I used some other programs it would say the same thing... that my card was damaged and had to be fixed.
I had a heck of a time finding a program that would do it for me on my 64gb sdxc SanDisk card!
But I found a free one called GUI Fat 32 Format that actually worked.
Click this link and it will start to download:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
It didn't work immediately, for me at first, but after a few tries it actually worked very well.
I think that once you get it into Fat32 all of your problems will go away. Hope so anyway.:cyclops:

I had a similar issue... I flashed an AOSP ROM on my phone n it corrupted my sd card and wouldn't format. before formatting I went back to a touchwiz ROM and it still said it was a bad sd card and needed to format I ended up formatting my card in my phone and lost all my data. I put music on my sd card and removed the sd card from my phone before flashing another AOSP ROM. After I installed another AOSP ROM I re-inserted the sd card and it again said it was bad and needed to be reformatted...
So my question is...How can you use a 64gb sd card on an AOSP ROM...I'm back on touchwiz for now. Sd card works fine.
Does formatting the sd card in your phone format it to exfat and not fat32?

Wait, so you're saying that AOKP/CM10 don't have the necessary drivers to handle exFAT formatted sd cards?
Do you remember where/how you came upon this information? Was this issue particular to 64gb SDXC cards vs smaller SDHC cards or maybe to certain classes of cards?
I find this shocking, but I can't say it isn't unfounded.
I have a 64gb uhs-1 sandisk card coming from newegg in a few days, so I'm obviously concerned.
Any insight you could provide is greatly appreciated!
Hey guys... after doing some fooling around I've found out some (useful) information for people with 64 gb sd cards...
1. When you format an sd card while its inside your phone it will format it to exFat.... which is fine if you plan on only staying on TW ROMs. This format is not compatible with TWRP Recovery and has given me issues (causing me to loose all my data on my card) just by flashing an AOSP ROM
2. If you use the program posted in the second post(thanks iomega311) you can format your sd card to Fat32 and it will now work on TW ROMs, TWRP, and AOSP ROMs.
Hope this helps for anyone with SD Card Questions/issues.
In my opinion... Never program sd cards on phone... Always use a computer. Especially if you want it done right!!!!

CM 10 which all the AOSP roms are based off does not support exFAT since it is a proprietary format and they don't want any legal trouble. The best way to format a 64GB gard is with GUI formatter
What allocation size did you guys use? Just got my 64GB SDXC and need to format it so that I can use it on CM10.

CWM + My EXT SD CARD = No Fun

Well I have a new version of CWM Mod, and apparently when you format the sd-card, it no longer formats the inner sd card but your external sd card. I was really pissed as I lost all my data I had saved, but it also managed to screw up my sd card. Neither of my computers recognize my SD Card and I have no idea how I can go about restoring it. My phone can detect the sd card but it will say its corrupt randomly. So I'm guessing CWM formatted the card in a really screwed up way. Any suggestions brahs?
I'll even try to mount the sd card on CWM but it wont be able to mount it. It's a shame to waste a 32 gig sd card like this

Make sure you card is not in exfat. CWM will not read cards in exfat, I had the same problem. If it is you are going to need to format it to fat 32. Most 32gigs sd cards and higher come in exfat now. You are most likey going to have to do it on the computer also it cant be done from CWM.

Yes but my computer won't even detect the SD Card. It was fine and dandy up until yesterday when I hit format on CWM on the SD Card thinking I was formatting the internal storage (since it's labelled /sdcard) but it formatted the actual SD. Windows won't detect my Micro SD and neither will my Mac. However if I put the SD card into my phone and connect via USB, it shows up.

You pressed format /sdcard, and it formatted your extsd? That's a pretty serious bug, so thanks for the heads up. What version of CWM are you running?
Op. I did the same thing a long time ago. I have gotten into the habbit of removing the sd card when I am formatting with a custom recovery. I also back up the sd to my pc and reformat the sd when changing roms. A bit off topic but I also wipe system before flashing a new rom. So far I have avoided many of the issues mentioned day after day. Maybe I am lucky but my wierd habits have been successful so far.

5.8 something. It's weird because it allows for both internal and external SD use. When you backup the first open is to save to external then its internal. First version of CWM i've ever used with such an option.
For anyone wondering about a solution, I used an android 2.3 device which actually has a format option for the SD card and now my computers recognize it again. Life is good

[Q] How to use 64GB SD card in Tmobile Galaxy S4

I have tried to use a samsung 64GB micro sd card in my galaxy s4, but everytime i put music on the sd it says the sd is damaged and needs to be reformatted. I contacted T Mobile and they told me that their version of the galaxy s4 would only take sd cards up to 32GB. I have read some other treads on this site to try and get around this, like the exfat thing of fat32, both of which failed. I have recently rooted my phone, successfully, and i was wondering if anybody could help me get past this 32GB sd card only bs. Now that I have rooted my phone is there any option i can take to successfully have my 64GB sd work in my galaxy s4. If you need more information please let me know. I would like to solve this problem as quickly as possible. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to try and help me.
Find a kernel that's exFAT compatible our reformat to FAT32. The factory firmware s should be compatible iirc.
Tmobile is wrong about only accepting 32GB sd card.

I have tried both ways exFat and Fat32. I have over 32GB on the sd card, but once i put the sd in my phone the phone tells me the the sd is damaged. I am new to all this ROM, Kernel, etc... stuff. Where could I find a kernel that supports exFat or FAT32 and how would I install this on my phone without messing it up?
I think they all support FAT32, stock firmware should support exFAT. You might just have a bad card.

Have you tried a different 64gb card? I have no problem on stock rom using a 64gb card I got on amazon.
Like what he said. I've been on Stock for a month before switching to custom ROMs but within that month I've got no problems using my 64GB card. Try another card, might be your card is damaged in the first place...
I have tried 3 different cards. I get the same message with each card.
Did u try reformatting while the card is in the device? Or thru cwm?

I have tried reformatting while card was in the device. I am not sure how to go about formatting through cwm.
I also have a 64gb sd card. Works great.

That is awesome. I wish I could figure out how to get mine to work. What kind of sd do you use? What was your formatting method?

When I try to format through clockwork I select mounts and storage, format external sd and then i get the message....."formatting external sd and then underneath it says error mounting external sd...skipping format. Any thoughts???
Maybe try reinstalling the Rom? Factory reset?

I honestly think, if you've really tried 3 different sd cards, that you could have a bad MicroSD slot. You might go into T-Mobile and ask them if you can try your card in one of their S4's. If your card works fine in a different phone, then, if your phone is a recent purchase, exchange it, if it's relatively new, get a warranty replacement.
I formatted my 64gb card on my pc using an adapter & have had zero issues. Currently running Infamous v8.0.

Format to Fat32. I recommend creating a Live USB of Ubuntu and doing it through gparted.

Mine works fine
I have a sandisk ultra 64 in mine formatted out of the box for exfat and it works just fine. You should not be having those issues.

What kernel are you using?
Could be a bummed sdcard. I had the same issue with a knockoff. Now I have a 64g exfat with no issues.
