First off, I'm aware this phone is riddled with GPS problems, so I'm not asking the typical questions. But pretty much everything I hear from people about their problems are how they never get a lock, or it takes several minutes to get one. That's not my problem.
My problem is after I get a lock (which is usually pretty quick) and am driving following my Google Nav directions it will CONSTANTLY lose the satellites. Seems to be every couple of miles that it starts searching for satellites for about 2-5 minutes before refinding them, only to lose them a few minutes later, and usually right when I need to exit the freeway. Also it takes it a good minute or so to realize it's lost the satellites, so it will keep me frozen in the same spot on the map for this time, not giving me the convenient button to access the list view.
Has anyone else experienced THIS specific problem, and do you have any advice?
What android version are you on? I had problems like this on eclair but my GPS on froyo is as good as my wife's evo.
Sent from my Evo Killer!
Froyo, Quantum 2.5. In fact this problem has really only been since Froyo ROMs. My GPS was solid in Eclair.
So... nothing? Not even a "no, nobody's having your problem?"
I've had this problem from time to time, but it seems to be inconsistent; I use google nav a few times every day. Hasn't happened lately though and I've been on the same ROM for 5 days now.
I have this issue and i'm on the latest bonsai rom. I think it is a problem with Google Nav personally because with Sprint Navigation it happens less often for me. Or Perhaps I just have a bad GPS chip. I'm going to run stock di18 for a few days and see if it is just Froyo and my Phone that bugs out. Maybe it is just my phone and I need a new one.
Yeah remember google nav is still in beta form
You're better off using sprint navigation
I never lost a lock and I'm on froyo stock dk28
And sprint nav is free..I can see why people on tmo and verizon use google nav but not sprint folk lol

Happens to me all the time (bonsai 1.1.4).
A quick work around is to use the GPS toggle in the notification area.
Disable it long enough for it to say it lost GPS, enable it finds it quickly (for me), but it's hella annoying.

Update from my previous post,
Google nav worked for 20 minutes all the way home yesterday and today on my way to work it dropped out after 5 minutes then worked for another 15. I'm pretty sure this is just Google nav being buggy and Epic GPS internals are not the greatest. All in all Sprint Nav seems to be working a lot better. If you still continue to have problems try getting a replacement phone from sprint. I hear that some of the epics out there have better luck with GPS. You Could have gotten a bad one like me. WHen i've asked this question in the past on the forums a lot of people just have the big issue of not getting GPS Locks. Never see to many having the GPS drop signal issue. Everyone else's post that i've read say they have perfect GPS. Its funny because I get locks instantly but gps drops randomly like yours... so so lame.
Also try out the new Bonsai4all rom because after I've installed it i'm having a lot less GPS drops with Google Nav and i'm still testing Sprint Nav. Good Luck.
EDIT: I have been testing GPS driving to work and back home. Not one single GPS signal lost. This GPS issues might be in the past. I'm not sure if its Mammons Bonsai Rom that fixed it but If I were anyone having the same issues I would try a fresh wipe of your SD card and Odin epic back to di18, get gps signal in Google Maps, Odin to dk28- get signal in Google Maps, and CWM3.0.0.5 and then flash BOnsai. Good Luck
I don't know what is in bonsai 1.1.4 rom but my gps is perfect now and it was buggy with every other rom I've tried on dk28. I've tried a lot. Midnight, viper, epic experience.

I had this problem all the time. It was especially bad last week when I was down in Tucson for work. It was what finally motivated me to get rid of the Epic.
I have the same problem OP. I actually finally just posted about it today, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921935 and my post is #4. I still don't have a solution, but am willing to try Bonsai 1.1.4 if it would fix things...
Such an annoying problem. I haven't been trying Sprint Nav lately as it is removed in Nebula 1.0.6, but I could try adding it back in and seeing if there is any improvement...
Try the phone reset with the msl code also. Many people are having luck with it. Good luck.

Had the same problem for weeks. So do many others, as this is on numerous threads throughout the boards (and Android Central too). On the latest Bonsai Rom (and others based on it like Midnight), they list a gps fix. Using Midnight 2.9 fixed it for me.
Also, when I was having problems, Sprint Nav worked much better than google Nav.
The more this happens to me, the more I think it's a Google Nav problem, not a hardware/firmware problem. When it happens I see that the GPS icon in the notification bar is solid and not "searching" for a signal. That to me points to the software as the problem. Either way, it's REALLY annoying.
I was never particularly happy with the Sprint Navigation app which is why I've avoided it. Google Nav always worked so well for me before. Also I've been trying to cut down on apps on this phone, especially carrier crap.
I may try Bonsai, although I've generally liked Quantum well enough that I didn't want to switch camps. Several people stating they're using it and not having this problem is a good trail to follow, though.
Still, pretty darn frustrating.
EDIT: All right, I just switched to Bonsai. All I can say is thank you for giving me the push to switch. I don't know about nav yet (although Maps lock was quite literally instant instead of the several seconds I wasn't too bugged by before), but the overall kernel is so absurdly faster I'm shocked. Thanks.
Here is what happens to me. I can get a very accurate GPS lock easily. When I am navigating, however, the GPS lock drops after a few minutes of use, as if GPS were turned off. If I have just rebooted the phone, the GPS lock lasts about 15 minutes, and then it happens again. I can toggle the GPS on and off from the pull down menu to fix it temporarily. But, it keeps happening, and it gets more frequent. I've been this problem on every Froyo ROM I have tried . . . Bonsai, Nebula, etc. It is NOT only on Google NAV. It seems to be even worse on NAVIGON.
I never had these problems on Eclair. The fix on Eclair was not as accurate, but it never just dropped.
This only happens to me when I lose signal. Which usually means I'm out in the middle of nowhere and need my gps.
Thinking of getting a back up offline gps for this reason.

This is not my issue. I am in the middle of strong 4G coverage when it happens + Navigon works offline (when you have a sat lock).
I didn't have issues before switching to DK28/Froyo/Nebuls 1.06, but now the GPS is awful ... even after doing the MSL reset. Frustrating is an understatement.
In addition to the rest of my current problems with cm6 my lock screen disappears and never comes back until I reflash the rom. Any suggestions?
And I seem to loose complete control of my home button.
Not that I have any suggestions to help your problem, but do you have these issues on a sense based rom our even another aosp rom?
Nope the only other roms I've ever run are baked snack back a long while ago and vaelpak since august or September. Been wanting to use cm cause im leaving 4g area and I really love all the options it comes with. And now I seem to be dropping wifi all the time. Guess I'm just not meant to run cm6 kinda disappointing.
I have a problem with my HTC Tilt 2 where the keyboard stops working randomly. I will go to compose a text message and nothing will respond except for the space bar. The space bar then opens up the start menu instead of moving the cursor over. I have tried multiple versions of the Energy ROM. I had a July 24th 2010 version of the Energy ROM that worked without any issues with the keyboard. I enjoy trying different types of the Energy ROMs and have tried almost all different variations of them in both the 21916 and 29020 builds. The July 24th version of the Energy ROM was the only one that has worked without issue. I really like the Energy ROM and currently I have the April 8th of the Energy "sencity" ROM in the 21916 build. In all of the ROMS that i have flashed to my phone i have used the carrier provisioning that comes with the ROM to povision the keyboard settings to AT&T. That has successfully mapped the keyboard correctly but the keyboard itself still stops functioning randomly. Please if you know the fix to this issue I would love to know what it is. Thank You!
I'm new here and don't claim to know ANYTHING...but....I don't remember a carrier provisioning keyboard fix for the Tilt2 included in the ROM, I think it's a cab file you have to install after you've installed the ROM which you can find on the Home Page of Energy Rom here...
It's possible you've already done that and are referring to the fact that your keyboard is malfunctioning as opposed to not being remapped correctly...if it was working fine before you flashed the ROM maybe reflash the stock rom and then reflash the Energy rom and then install the keyboard fix cab....
I've never been clear on what carrier provisioning does since part of the start up routine has you select your carrier so what else is there to do? At any rate, when I have run carrier provisioning for kicks it has never fixed the keyboard or done anything else that I could observe. I apply a separate cab to remap the keyboard.
The carrier provisioning adjusts "something" (I don't know what it is) and I think installs "something" (I don't know what it is either) that should coincide with the MMS Fix cab installation that allows for larger MMS pictures to be received (and possibly sent)....at least, for the AT&T Tilt2...the first carrier provisioning is to run on TMobile or AT&T or whatever service provider is available from it, there is a Carrier Provisioning 2 setting for the MMS Fix Cab of which I am referring
hope this help
I get the same issue with the phone as well where my keyboard & i have to use the screen keyboard. I have to restart the phone in order for the keyboard to work since it does me no good for me to keep using the onscreen when i want to use the actual keyboard on the phone. This has been going on with any rom that i use. Lately the issue i am getting on my phone as well is that it shuts off on its own or it not charging right. going to upgrade soon. I love this phone but time for me to get something new.
I read elsewhere that someones battery contacts inside the phone had lost some of their "spring tension"...meaning they didnt push out enough to make enough pressure against the battery...they applied electrical tape to the opposite side of the battery so the battery fit more snug
if the battery is not making good contact with the terminals it won't charge well..if it is loose enough, it will lose contact while the phone is on and the phone will turn off..it can be loose enough to turn the phone off, and then by repositioning the phone in your hand while you're turning it on again that the battery repositions slightly to re-establish contact for the phone to be powered on...and when you set the phone in it's holster or pouch, a slight jarring or repositioning knocks the battery loose again and the phone shuts off...

Might seem like a dumb question, but: do you task 29 or flash a stock ROM before flashing the new ENERGY ROM? I always Task29 before flashing but, sometimes when really weird things happen, I find the cure to be the following procedure:
1 - Hard Reset and boot into bootloader (don't let ROM boot again after HR)
2 - Task29
3 - Flash AT&T Stock ROM and let it first boot all the way through setup to the home screen
4 - Hard Reset
5 - Task29
6 - Flash new radio (if necessary)
7 - Flash new ROM
I also use the attached cab for setting up my keyboard (I think it's actually NRG's cab)
Of course, sometimes its just the ROM itself that is buggy. I am an avid ENERGY user myself, but there have been a few builds that were not as great as some of the others.
Hope this helps!

ENERGY 29020 Sencity (Apr 29)
No i haven't tried task 29 normally all i do is flash the new ROM on and I don't put the stock ROM on first. I will try doing that to see if it helps thanks. The tilt 2 does have a carrier provisioning built into the ROM but it installs a separate CAB when you run the provisioning tool. I have tried that way and I've also tried the stand alone CAB for the at&t keyboard layout from NRG i believe. Both ways still have the same issue. Both ways correctly map the keyboard. What is strange is if I go back to the Energy ROM from July 24th 2010 it doesn't have that issue and the keyboard works just fine. I don't flash the stock ROM or anything before going back. I like that version but for eye candy and enjoying new stuff i want it to work for newer ROMS. Thanks for the responses I will try doing what you have suggested.
Hi,
First post, feels like I'm a little late to the party. I have a gio which initially had gingerbread 2.3.3. The phone is unlocked, and rooted, and has the clock work mod recovery patch on it. I have tried a couple of different versions of gingerbread, and am now running ice cream sandwich: kernel 2.6.35-7-galaxyics, CyanogenMod version build 9-20120610-UNOFFICIAL-gio, build number IMM76L.
Firmware-wise, it's mostly good, but I'm having a couple of weird issues:
1. The screen goes black on me periodically, and won't come back without pushing the on/off button. This is happening every 30 to 60 seconds of use.
2. The wifi crashes, a lot. With the older gingerbread I would get the word "error" under wifi in settings, and couldn't turn it back on. I would enter *#*#526#*#* to bring it back, but every 5 minutes seems a little excessive.
With the newer ICS, I've noticed I can play on a wifi link all day long without issue, but as soon as I set the phone down for a couple of minutes, wifi stops working. If I go into settings, wifi is on, but there's no connection. If I turn wifi off and back on, it comes back to life.
I guess, I'm wondering if these indicate more of a hardware issue than a software issue. It's hard to ask for support from my carrier, given I'm using an unlocked phone bought from a 3rd party, and have no contract.

Errors that you describe has a lot of people
The team is now working on ICS AOSP so be patient wait a little meringue as soon
And yet you propose to install something else that any CM
In total there is this quite a bit
update
A couple of things I've noticed:
1. The resetting wifi problem does not happen when the phone is plugged into USB.
2. The screen turning off happens frequently, but about 1/2 of the time, the screen will turn off for 1-2 seconds, then come back on at full brightness; the rest of the time, it will not come back on at all, but still responds to being tapped. The only way to get it back is to push the on/off button on the side twice, but then the screen is locked, and has to be swiped to unlock.
I have picked up a second phone, a 5660M running stock gingerbread 2.3.4, unlocked and rooted; not experiencing either of the two above issues (and the camera preview works). If I could take the 5660 back to stock at this point, I would prefer that, as the phone is not usable with these problems. Is there a stock rom available for this phone somewhere?
update part II
Hmm, after the phone showed up with 2.3.3 claiming to be a gt-s5660, and was sold as such, I finally put 1 & 1 together. I checked under the battery, it's a gt-s5660m. That explains probably all of the problems I've been having. Pity there's no ICS build for the M version of the phone.
You can use cm9 ics on your M model, it only changes your device id to gt-s5660, just dont flash roms with ODIN except roms for the M model.
Flashing from recovery wont install a baseband, with ODIN it mostly does, so the only roms you cant flash are old roms that still need odin like gioprio.
Flashable .zips are fine, all of them

The wifi problem might be hardware, m8
I don't know, as my gio has some strange problems as well and I've had ICS, Adrenaline ROMs, everything, and the problems still persist. At least they're not really bad to handle in everyday use but still, they're annoying.
Go to wifi settings - advanced - sleep policy- never

update part III
Since going back to GINGERBREAD.MUGKG3 / 2.3.4 for the GT-S5660M, the wifi crashing and screen blanking behaviours have completely stopped. After two days of running, wifi has not shut-off unexpectedly even once, and the screen does not blank any more at all.
The gps works now; it was not before. It used to sit for up to an hour under a clear open sky, day or night, and never acquire a single satellite. Now it picks them up within 30-60 seconds, though a full lock does take a couple of minutes.
The phone previously always indicated it was roaming, and would frequently refuse to send texts or make calls. I would get full bars for signal strength, but no connectivity.
I even got hold of the fm radio app, which was not included with the M version of the 5660, and manually installed it (phone must be rooted, and file system must be mounted read/write). It works too; a nice bonus.
The camera works, but is a bit flaky, requiring an occasional restart to get it going.
Probably the biggest headache, after flashing back to the 5660M version, was that the phone locked itself again, and wouldn't work on my network. I dumped bml5 page and searched out the unlock code. I had some trouble with this. The search string to get close to the code is supposed to be a sequence of twenty 0x00 bytes, one 0x05 byte, and fourteen 0xff bytes. The 0xff bytes weren't there, and it took a while for me to clue in that if I searched on the twenty 0x00, and single 0x05 byte sequence, I could still pull it out. I got it, and wrote it down in case this happens again.
sms issue
Still ticking along with the GT-S5660M; mostly it's all working nicely. I have one question though: I recently ran out of memory for storing SMS messages. It looks like the texting app in the phone wants to put everything on the SIM card rather than on the SD card, but there's no option for moving the default storage location for messages. Is there a simple way to do this? The phone is unlocked & rooted, but does not have the ext2 file system on it.
What's the IC? I checked under the battery to confirm mine is a Canada model, and it is.
But my IC is GT-S5660L

Ever since I use the Llama app (Location Aware Mobile Application)on my i9195 (Carbon ROM 4.4.2) I have the problem that Llama doesn't receive cell tower information when the screen is turned off. This is a major feature of the app, which doesn't work. I activated the active cell polling, wake up during sleep etc, but the only thing working is to activate the screen during every poll, which is not favorable of course.
The thing is, that with my previous Huawei Y300, with stock ROM 4.1.2 it worked flawlessly without having to enable all the extra (battery consuming) settings. Unfortunately I don't know if the stock Samsung ROM didn't have this bad behavior since I booted the original ROM only once to enable root, in order to instal CWM recovery
Would this be a ROM issue or device issue? Too bad this is my first post here and therefore I can't post in the dev. section of Carbon ROM on this website :crying:
Has nobody issues with Llama on this device/ROM? The location awareness is really adding something to the use of the phone. Really too bad that I have to turn the screen on, before Llama realizes that I am at another location.
I love Llama, it's a great app which allows me to set it and forget it. I love not having to remember to turn radios on/off, muting phone at college or work.
I had to uninstall it because I switched carriers, and with the new one I keep getting "1-1-1-1 No signal" on the Recent towers tab. It's intermittent (once every detected tower) and it had my profiles going nuts.
I also was experiencing issues where my phone would freeze until it forced a reboot almost every time I got back home.
Sounds like your current ROM might be to blame. I suggest you try Llama with the stock rom. I for one prefer stock with Action Launcher. You might lose the added features of the custom ROM, but at least Samsung's camera interface is way better than AOSP, at least to my taste and needs.

Thanks, luckily I don't have any of your issues so far, only the cell tower updates being delayed until the screen turns on. A few posts away from now I can ask the question in the specific ROM forum and see if they can fix it.I love the ROM and don't like the Samsung layer of the original stock ROM.
In the meantime the cell tower option has been added to the Carbon rom!
