Has anyone noticed how slow the light sensor is at picking up changes in lighting conditions? Sometimes I have to turn off the phone and turn it back on for the sensor to recognize light change faster. Or wait more than few seconds for it to automatically pick up the change. I have a HD7 and Titan neither are that slow to respond to light change. It happens pretty much instantly. As well, the device slows down (you can tell by scrolling the home screen) when the screen brightness is adjusting. Is it just me?
Yeah, I have seen it too. I notice it from being inside and then going outside and it takes a bit to adjust. Slower then my Focus was but its ok.

Ok, so I'm not going crazy. And yeah, going from inside to outside (or vice versa) is when you really notice it. It's ok, but man I hope they at least try to fix it as I'm in and out all day

Yeah...I see it too....but good luck on fixing that....I doubt this would make the limited fix list. But fingers are crossed.
Speaking of the light sensor. Does anyone know where it is? I know where the prox sensor is located, but not the light sensor. Also, not test for it in Diagnostics. Is there something built into the screen that we don't know about.

It's immediately adjacent the proximity sensor, near the FFC. There is a test for it in diagnostics as well. It's called "ALS" and reports the current ambient light in mlx.
Thanks. Didn't notice that ALS test. I have tried covering the FFC area without any screen response. But the test does react to light changes. Something else to play with.

Noticed the same. Test reacts perfectly fine. So what lies between the sensor detecting change and the screen adjusting brightness?
Really? My Lumia 900 usually takes no longer than 5 seconds to adjust...
My wife and I both have month old gs3's. Both are stock, have brightness set to auto, and power saving mode on. However, hers is much brighter than mine.
She has a white phone and I have a blue one. Am I missing another setting that could be different on our phones?
Have you tried manually going through each of the brightness settings to see if they are different when not set on auto?

Yup. They're the same. It's only with auto.
In my experience auto brightness has never really worked properly for me on any Android I've had.. I personally always have my screen as low as possible, it's pretty bright even like that.
I have heard that its not uncommon for inconsistencies in screen brightness on some phones. May be a quality control issue

If the brightness of the phones are working manually then i would just chalk it up to minor inconsistencies in the photo cell's on each device, which is to be expected.
Check if "auto adjust screen tone" is checked in Settings -> Display.
EDIT: If it's only with auto, maybe the brightness sensor is a little wack. You could try the Lux brightness app in the play store, as you can manually set the outdoor brightness/screen brightness ratios.

Sorry for bumping this but I have the exact same issue. Mine is blue, my wife's is white. Her phone is way brighter set to auto than mine. It's the same if auto is turned off, her phone is way brighter.
Google searches don't reveal any suggestions...
So this is definitely not a blue vs. white phone issue. In my office, four other people have Galaxy S3s. Three are blue like mine and one is white. I compared all of their phones to mine and mine is way dimmer and a slightly different color temperature than theirs are. I did a factory reset on my phone and it made no difference. The phone is only 12 days old so I am going to take it back up to Best Buy today and see if they can swap it out.
**Update**
Best Buy swapped the phone for me and the issue is resolved for me. In fact, the new phone is a little brighter than some of the phones I had compared to before.

got my new Note II yesterday, but already having 2 problems.
The biggest is the light sensor; the Screen keeps adjusting it's Brightness like hell.
Read out the Sensor data, which is going from 0 to 13 lux when I cover the Sensor with my hand.
Do you experience the same?
Also my USB wire plug is very loose. Also normal?
try turning off auto brightness...

Does your Light Sensor Value also jump around in same light conditions?
Low-Light mine goes from 0-28, normal it goes from 400~ to 80.000 sometimes, which results in frequent readjustment in brightness.
Thats very irritating for me, cause I use it everytime
Would be nice if someone could give me his values/behavior of the sensor with AndroSensor or so.

I just got my GT-N7100 and am having the same problems. Very irritating. Need this to work for better battery life. Tried a program from Play Store called Lux, but it works the same, maybe a little better. But Lux is showing the sensor readings varying all the time even when the ambient light hasn't changed at all, thus the brightness fluctuations. I am rooted, but on Stock ROM. Wonder if a custom ROM would fix it, or if it's a defective sensor.
Anyone else experiencing this?

The default auto-brightness should not be updating so fast that it flickers You might want to get it checked out. Or if you use a 3rd party app, reduce the time interval of the update.
And do note, there is a difference say, with your back towards the sun, you face the phone towards you, or towards the floor. So when you are on the move, expect values to change.
Stock auto brightness is woeful in my opinion. It was the same one my Gnex so I have used Luxbon both with good results. Takes a bit of tweaking but brilliant when set up.

I'm not in the brightest room but I have 2 60W light bulbs above me and my sensor has 0 when the phone is towards me and 20 lux when it is towards the roof. And yes it's stable with the values.

I just gotten this phone today. I noticed the auto brightness transistion is not smooth but rather jerky and on my set it will brighten the screen and then lower the brightness quite often even though the lighting in the room did not change. Just wondering if I got a lemon set.

I see the same thing. I hope it's not defective.
Mine does the same thing. Ended up turning the feature off, and leaving the brightness at about 50%

Exactly What I did. I used to have the face recognition to keep screen on and that was really annoying with the screen dimming every 15 seconds but with the brightness. Set at 50 I can still see the screen pretty well in sunlight.

Coming from 2.5 months of HTC One, I just got this phone yesterday! Awesome phone amid some lags here and there at times. I hope that the next update of Android 4.2.2 will iron out those issue.
Yes, Since Android 4.1, the Autobrightness is kind of "too extreme" to be practical especially the dimming of backlight in low light. I have also set it to 52% manual.
Just installed P and now previous brightness level of 63 it's so dim? I have to have it almost on 90% brightness now, why have they messed with this, it was fine as it was

Same for me. WTF Google?
The actual brightness is the same, they just changed how the slider works. The first half moved it fast, last half moved it slower. Now the slider is more uniform.

It's definitely not smooth across the entire range, all my brightness is almost all the last 10% and actually a pain to set properly, it's worse for me.
That's more accurate because in bright indoor lighting or outside it's going to be towards the end of the scale. Dim indoor lighting I'm currently at 43%. And in pitch black it goes to 0%. I pretty much never touch my slider anymore after a couple adjustments. Don't get caught up on the percentages. I would be willing to bet that with Oreo at 40% and Pie at 90% the lumens output of the screen was the same.

Yeah I don't touch mine once it is setup generally but it's definitely not even throughout the scale, only gets really bright from like 85% onwards, just seems odd the real brightness is so high up, makes for fine tuning a bit difficult.
The screen has been rated a minimum of 1.78 nits and a maximum of 496 so if it truly is linear now, 50% is something like only 247 which isn't that bright at all.

So much for AI on adaptive brightness, it's rubbish, and why do Google try to fix things that aren't broken, who needs AI for adjusting a backlight? Seems nothing more than just being able to market the phone as having AI! Never had an issue on Oreo, had it set at 25% with adaptive brightness and it was always the correct brightness wherever I was, which shouldn't be difficult given it's got a sensor to read the light levels.
Now since Pie, last night I turned my phone on in the dark and was blinded by a bright display (Oreo it would have been at it's lowest level in the dark), so turned the brightness down, turned it again later and the same thing, way too bright, and again this morning in a fairly dark room the same thing, far too bright, so I turn it down again. How long will it take to learn? The old method it was tamed immediately, now I'm constantly fiddling with the brightness, how is that progress!
Is there an option to go back to the old method?
Wish I hadn't bothered upgrading, just another year with an Android update with changes for changes sake.

Totally agree on this. Adaptive battery and adaptive battery are almost non-sense. Only something cool to brand the item.
And Pixel Visual Core is just something super-expensive to make Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter cameras use HDR+. I'd rather pay something less and not having this feature that is probably expensive (or modifies the perception of the Pixel 2 as super-new and mega futuristic). Also, I've got the feeling they won't use it for Pixel 3 or 4.
Moto X1 was the last to use more CPUs to optimize the phone, before Qualcomm introduced more chips.

For any one having this issue please report this from your device at Settings > System > About Phone, the more people that flag it the more likely it will get fixed.
For me, I hate these updates that break simple basic functionality and overall add nothing extra to what we had with Oreo. Google really need to test these things properly and stop trying to fix things that simply are not broken!
