AOKP Ktoonsez...how to not sync contacts to google servers - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

How do people NOT sync their contacts to google servers on the AOKP jellybean rom by ktoonsez and task? What if I have contacts in a vcf or (google)csv and don't want these contacts to be synced to google servers. What's the easiest way of just putting them into contacts storage without syncing them to google servers? Is this even possible on this rom since the stock dialer forces you to sync with google servers?

There is no way to not have your contacts sync with the Google server. It's just how Google made Jelly Bean. Personally I like it because I can never lose my contacts!

When you start up your ROM for the first time you are prompted if you want to restore and backup your phone with Google unchecked this, go into settings, then scroll down to accounts hit Google account. Uncheck contacts. Although this basically goes hand in hand with the play store. Not much else you can do to stop Google from collecting data.
Hit that thanks button if this helps

the thing is to have contacts on my phone I have to sync them to google at one point or another. I don't think there is a way to read off of sim only or better yet have the google contacts (either in a csv or vcf format) imported into your internal storage. Using any of the import apps on the S3 doesn't allow the contacts to show up under your phone.

i import a vcf backup of my contacts all the time that i have stored on my Dropbox account. I backed mine up i believe when i was still using my Atrix 4G, and haven't had any issues importing them just by opening the vcf file. They still show up in the Phone app under contacts.

I didn't think of just finding the vcf in file explorer and pressing it. Did that and the first time it imported them all in my notifications bar but when I went to my dialer...nothing under the phone account. Ok...tried to reimport and it is asking me to create them under my email address which is NOT want I want to do. I want it under my phone account/sd card (internal or external) ONLY. I guess I can just select an email account and not let it sync...but during upgrades and reset this option automatically is checked and I don't want to EVER sync with googles servers. I just want a hard copy that I would be the only one to manage
GO contacts can do this perfectly...unfortuantely there is an annnoying and persistent application has crashed in the notification bar on the galaxy s3 for it ;(

Do you start a new thread every time you have a question about a ROM dude? All of these threads you start could easily be answered in the said ROM in question. There's no need to be creating new threads for every question you have.

I've yet to see it not give me the option to sync the contacts only to the phone.

Wow really? Have you been flashing this rom for a while? I dont think ive ever got that option especially in stock. What is the reason for this? Can anyone surmise?

How to get facebook pictures/statuses to update with my contacts?

I love my Evo but one problem I seem to have is getting my pictures from my people to match their current Facebook picture. When I originally linked all the contacts in my people it was correct to their pictures at the time but that was 2 months ago. Now, everyones picture is still the same as it was back then even though I go to accounts->sync every day and have it on auto sync for every 4 hours. Does anyone know how to fix this bug on my phone? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
I've done it by selecting settings, applications, manage applications, all tab, then select contacts storage and clear data... now your contacts must be backed up on google otherwise you'll lose all your contacts.. and just sync, sync sync
sorry for the noob response but how do i back them up with google?

If your contacts are created in your google account, meaning if you can log into gmail on your computer and your contacts are there, then they are already backed up.
If you create contacts on the internal phone storage, you are sol.
Go to people and hit menu and choose import/export. Back up the contacts that are on the internal phone storage to your sd card. Open up gmail in your pc browser and import those contacts to your gmail contacts, using the file that you backed up to the card.
Or what you can do is go to settings, accounts & sync and select facebook for htc sense, remove account, the add the account back

okay i did that and now only like 1/4th of my people have the little FB icon on the bottom left and only the people with the icon have statuses under their name. Also, when I try to link the people without the facebook icon, that person's name will not be on the list but if i choose someone else to link that first person's name is there. sorry if im confusing you guys haha I know its something small I just like to have everything right on my phone.
Wow people here are doing this the hard way. There is a facebook picture app that syncs your FB contacts picture. The other way is to just log out of facebook AND AND AND AND AND facebook for htc sense. then just log back into them both. easy as pie.

Backing Up Contacts... Sim Card?

I've been looking around for a long time in searching this site and other forum sites and no one really had the answer i was looking for, so im only wondering about this. Since we've all been rooted, i decided to install a ROM, and when i finally had it booted and everything, i was prompted to put my google account in to sync my contacts. But they didnt show up? Now mind you, i only have 1 google account, and that is the one i created at verizon when i asked for the DI2. Im currently on the Stock right now with all my data. in Settings >Account & Sync, i have the backup assistant, facebook, the google account, mail news and twitter. In the muiu ROM, i put that google account in but never got my contacts back. So my question is, are there other ways of backing up your contacts without erasing them to your SD card, OR SIM CARD? when i go to export contacts, it wants to save it as a file in my SD card, and then when i import them on another rom, it asks for a Vcard, but it doesnt work? Can anyone explain this to me?
Sync the contacts to your google account. I believe it asks you when adding a contact if you want them as a google contact or phone only. Make sure you select google contact. Then check the "sync contacts" box under your google account sync settings (its checked by default, but I uncheck it once its done to save battery life. Don't know if you do the same). Then force a resync of contacts before you change roms to make sure no new contacts or info are left out. From there change to any rom, or any other android phone and your contacts will be restored on the initial sign in.

yeah i see what your saying. In the people app, when i click menu, and then view contacts, it says with Facebook fot HTC Sense, i have 538 contacts, my Google account has 4, and the Phone has 179. How to save all the phone contacts to my google account?
Not sure myself. Never tried it and I dont know if you can change a phone contact to a google contact once the info has already been put in. Try GO contacts from the market? Lets you back up all your contacts. Haven't tried it but I've backed up and restored texts with GO SMS from the same developer, and it worked great. Im assuming it would work just as well.

tried it, and it worked just as i expected. Huge thanks, you saved me a LOT of time! and big ups on that SMS backup app, it did wonders. much appreciation
Glad I could help

[Q] Question regarding which ROM to install & Backing Up Contacts

1: I've been running an ICS theme on my epic 4g touch for a little while and I'm looking into installing a ROM to improve speed and battery life. I've been struggling to choose between the most current version of Blazer, or Unnamed. They seem relatively similar apart from the fact that if I get Unnamed I'll have to flash an ICS theme over it, but I'd like opinions from everyone.
2: I understand for both of those ROMs you must wipe your phone. I have no issue with wiping apps as they can be reinstalled, but I need my contacts. I don't have an SD card and would prefer to not have to buy one, so is there any method to backing up my contacts that I could retrieve them post flashing?
Thanks in advance
1. I don't have either of those so can't help with that.
2. if you have a Gmail account set up you can back up contacts. its in accounts and sync under settings. just be sure to go online into your Gmail account to check. I thought I was backed up before and wasn't.

I've tried syncing the contacts to gmail before but when I checked the account, none of my contacts were there.
ya I believe I fixed it by going to accounts and sync. then clicked on the google account. unchecked all. then checked only contacts and hit sync now. if that doesn't work try removing account and then add it again. sorry I don't know of any third party way to backup the contacts.
The trick is to get all of your email contacts into Gmail on your PC even if you have to manually enter each one. Then they will sync automatically to your phone and you won't have to back anything up. If you use Outlook on your computer, I think there's a way to export your contacts into gmail with a csv file. I couldn't tell you how to do it but you should be able to find out by searching in Google forums. I did mine all manually when I first started using android and I've never had to back up anything. Google does it for me. I know this will sound really strange, but to get them all to sync to Gmail and into my phone contacts list, I had to enter a fake email address for the contacts I only had a phone number for. Now I can flash and wipe my phone all I want and all my email and phone contacts sync again as soon as my phone connects to Google servers. I have them stored on my sd card, too, but I never need to restore them from it. Make sure you have two way sync turned on in your Gmail account on your computer. If you want gmail to pull in all of your other email accounts such as Comcast or hotmail, you can set that up on your computer too in Gmail account settings. I get all my mail in Gmail now and don't even use the other email client on my phone.
When you create a contact it will give you 2 options. 1 to backup internal 2 to backup to Google. It seems you selected internal so you need to go to contacts and go through the menus until you switch all contacts to Google then do your sync through settings. Best of luck if your still having issues do a titanium backup.. but like the poster said above as long as you save your contacts to Google in the future it makes going from rom to rom a breeze

Sweet, thanks everyone. I've got my contacts onto Gmail. Anyone have opinions regarding Unnamed vs. Blazer?
There's also a way to backup manually your contact list. In contacts program hit menu then export. It saves the file as 00001.icf in the root of your sd card. After you export, use a file manager to go and make sure the file is there before proceeding. You could then copy it to your computer or email it as an attachment to yourself.
Or it could be .vcf I forgot

Verizon backup assistant and the contact mess..

So my mom recently got a samsung galaxy s3, she originally had a galaxy nexus, and before that an envy 2.
We used verizon backup assistant to backup all the contacts on her envy 2, because that was the only simple contact backup available for the envy.
She now has
A. Google sync backing up all her NEWER contacts
B. Backup assistant backing up her older contacts
C. A bunch of hotmail contacts.
Basically I created a huge mess... If I were to use backup assistant on the SGS3, how would I go about changing each and every contact to sync with google past that point?
I'm just wondering if there is a simple way to go about this without going through each and every contact.

In people or contacts there should be an option your whole library as a .vcf . If you put that file on the new phone it will get all your contacts. But in reality your Google account should be backing up All your contacts. I had issues back in the of days with duplicate contacts. Turns out if you go into gmail on a computer there is an option to merge duplicates. If you don't think they are all being synced with Google then the .vcf method would be the safest. Then if you get dups just merge them in gmail

Here is what I did.
Removed the hotmail account.
Exported the contact list and then imported into google
Merged contacts
Done
What I thought would happen originally was that removing my hotmail account would leave all the contacts associated with it, this was not the case.

If I export the list and then import it to google. Do I need to delete contacts between exporting and importing as I assume your phone will have duplicates on the phone itself? (I already have contacts on the phone and not google so not sure if importing will now just cause the phone to have duplicates)
It depends on how your contacts were originally backed up. Assuming you wanted to start over clean it would export all your contacts, then clear the app data for the contacts (this will delete everything!) and then import the file into Google on your pc.

[Q] Contacts on Cyanogenmod

i tried out CM10.1 but after a week or two reverted back to stock touchwiz because i liked that my contacts would always sync with tmobile and stay backed up. i was wondering if, running on cyanogenmod, i could have that feature where i can restore my contacts from tmobile and also have any new contacts I add be automatically be uploaded to my tmobile account like it does on a stock touchwiz rom. is there any way to do this?
You can always sync your contacts onto your gmail account and that way all your contact is on your gmail and will always resync whenever you want it to or need to
all the contacts i have are already synced with tmobile though, and i cant find a way to change that. will i have to create a second copy of each contact so i can set them to sync with my google account?
Ok i see an option within the contacts app that says "merge with Google". Will this sync my tmobile contacts with my Google account so I can retrieve them directly from Google?
