[Q] Signal only shows 3G, no more H - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
Over the last 24 hours my connection has only shown 3G as opposed to H in the statusbar. What's weird is when I check the connection in Settings > About Phone > Status it shows HSPA+:15, occasionally dropping down to HSDPA:8. I'm on the O2-UK network.
As I understand HSPA+ should come up in the statusbar as H. Is this correct? What's the problem? Also should I be getting HSPA+:21?
Running speedtest gives me: D: 2196 kbps, U: 1319 kbps. D varies by +/-600kbps
I'm running 4.2 Kalo v5.0 on Franco r318. Radio is XXLH1. I've also added kevdliu's quick settings mod.
Thanks guys

Although not directly comparable my friend, also in London but about 10 miles away and running on giffgaff (which piggybacks the O2 network), is getting D: 3337kbps, U: 2109 kbps. Afaik giffgaff speeds should be lower than O2 pay monthly but this might be due to the area etc.
My first thought is that my statusbar is just buggy but I can't shake the thought that there's something wrong with my phone's signal/radio. Should I be getting faster speeds (HSPA+:21 or higher)?

+1 on this issue. Had HSDPA on 4.1.x, then suddenly 3G on 4.2.
But I think you're getting the right speeds. At least I know I am.

Same here in Canada on Telus network.
Status bar never shows "h" anymore.
When downloading something network type will switch to HSDPA+:15 but otherwise is always at HSDPA:8
I think that's the way its supposed to work to save battery but i dont know why the signal bar only shows 3g now...

HSDA <-> UMTS automated switching?

I've seen in my TyTN, WM6, radio 1.34 a (strange?) behaviour. I noticed with VODAFONE : I have a plain UMTS connection 3g icon and 3g data connection alive, used for push e-mail.
When I am in HSDPA area and data connection starts data transfer, I see a switch between 3G and H connection, then revert after 1-2 seconds ad the end of data transver back in UMTS mode.
Hypotesis:
1) Could be a simple WM6 LVSW edition bug
2) Could be a WM6 feature (HSDPA has well known problems in voice phone avaliability when active)
3) Could be a Vodafone Network feature, HSDPA onli when needed
4) 1.34 radio compatibility problem/feature?
5) ......
6) I am stupid and this is a well known fact
Question:
Any other wm6 user noticed same behaviour?
It has always worked like this, HSDPA is ON when you need it, not all the time.
thats part of the design, saving resources for the network.

This isn't working this way for all mobile phone providers in Italy, with TIM if you are in HSDPA area it will stay connected... and you're off-line if someone calls
May be we discovered why isn't enabled as DEFAULT setting and we need to enable using SetHSDPA.exe

Ditto in Australia. If im connected to GPRS, the icon is permanently showing HSDPA... unless of course i only have GSM coverage (very rare!!).
In Taipei, it works exactly as elivne says... H only when needed.
Cheers
FWIW, I didn't experience proper "throttling" in and out of HSDPA mode until I upgraded to WM6 and radio 1.38 (not sure which to thank for it). Prior to that whenever I was in H coverage, the radio would run almost exclusively in H mode. Talk about battery drain! Currently I can run for almost 2 days between charges (and that's with push mail).
How a particular combination performs for you must depend a lot on the carrier, your locale, etc. Took a lot of "trial and error" for me.
Yep, I'm on UK T-Mobile, and my icon only switches from "3G" to "H" when it's active.
As vp3G says, it noticably saves battery power from the old "permanent HSDPA" behaviour. Although I can't claim to get 2 days usage out of mine.
It is a network feature. If you are inactive on HSDPA for t sec the network will downswitch you to UMTS ( called R99 ). Only 10 users can use the HSDPA at the same time and there is an inactivity timer ( t=10 sec) try to manage the traffic by moving inactive users to R99 ( max speed 384 kbps)
Thank you for sharing your knowlege Austin Boy....

Cheers

Really only 10 simultaneous users? Seems like the odds of getting a timeslice when you need it would be virtually nil.
The 10 limitation can be increased by any operator by adding Channel elements (Radios) or more when adding another carrier ( frequency). Europe has more spectrum than the US and it is possible to get two carriers ( 2x5MHz) and use one for speech and the other for data. In the US we are sharing the spectrum between GSM and UMTS. AT&T will be migrating GSM to UMTS gradually and using the 850 band for UMTS before moving to LTE (4G)

I have a similar switching scenario.
Prior to flashing my Radio to 1.38.00.10 and ROM to Black 2.0 I tested my download speed at www.dslreports/mspeed and was please to see I got almost a 1Mb/sec rating.
However since the flashes I have re-tested and am now only getting 250-300 kb/sec. It may be the network, so I will try on a few separate occasions and different locations.
NB. I have enabled HSDPA in HTweaksC
I noticed during the test that the download bar jumps staright up immediately but then slows down quite a lot?

3 ITA is working same way.
Enabling HSDPA only when there is data transfer active.
Okay tried again on my commute home, and also when I got to my house.
Speed is looking good ! getting up above the 1mb/sec rate again.
Must have just been a busy cell/network
ok... i have a spv m3100 with black 3.0.1 wich is suposed to be HSDPA enabled... i have also enabled it in the tweaker.... today for the first time i have seen the icon H... in my area there is no HSDPA coverege... none... but i read today that untill the end of the year they are trying to cover it... and i was thinking that they are already making tests... i tested my speed at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and i had a 145 kilobits per second speed... wich as far as i know it is similar to 3g... i disabled the HSDPA and tried a few times in 3g... the speed was 135 kb/s... to small the difference...
so... my question... what is the tweaker doing?... enableing HSDPA or just replacing the 3g icon with the H icon?
no one???

What does the H stand for on the network?

I've seen E for EDGE, 3G and at home I always have H, but next to T-Mobile it says 3G. What does the H stand for/represents?
hsdpa, its the fastest out of the lot
wiki
That explains why when I'm home and on the net it's just as fast as if I was connected to WIFI. I don't even connect to my WIFI at home anymore because H is pretty fast.
Thanks for the reply.
at least yours shows those icons. mine doesn't. I only know what i'm connected to when i actually connect & it shows in the signal bars. & i disabled showing 3G next to tmobile because that was just annoying.
haven't encountered the H here in phoenix either.

I believe that the "H" will depend on the icon pack that you pick. I'm trying to recall if I saw an "H" when I had the stock T-Mobile icons or if it was just "3G" instead.

I think you're right because when I had the T-Mobile stock ROM I had no H it was just 3G. Until I got the Europe MW 6.5 ROM I saw it and now I'm on the EnergyROM.
yes i only started seeing the H after i installed the 1% battery on the stock rom.
It stands for HSDPA which in turn stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access
My 3G is faster than your 4G
If and when you see your buddy bragging about hdmi in their HTC EVO, the H on hour phone allows you to quip back:
[bold] "My 3G is faster than your 4G" [/bold]
here's the proof:
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/video-htc-evo-4g-vs-htc-hd2
H = HSDPA
H+ = HSPA+ (On the T-Mobile G2, which is considered 4G for T-Mobile)

T-Mobile HSDPA

I just purchased T-Mobile's version of the Touch Pro 2 about a week ago. I moved from AT&T and the TyTN II.
On the TyTN II, whenever I was on HSDPA, the connection icon would display an H. On my Touch Pro 2, I only ever see a "3G" icon. However, my connection settings are set to use HSDPA/HSUPA. I have unlimited web service, for what's it's worth.
Is this normal? Am I in fact getting HSDPA service? If not, is it a registry fix? Is there anyway to check for sure what protocol I'm connected with?
I would like to know that as well, Its normal same thing on my tmo tp2
I see the "H" symbol, but only when actively downloading data. It switches back and forth which I think is a good thing. No problems on this end running the stock T-Mo ROM
yeah I kept getting the 3G icon too, but after i put on tsowen's taskbar, now I get the H & i don't think i've seen the 3G at all.

I have only seen the H icon after installing a custom taskbar as well. I'm not sure if it just replaced the 3G icon right out or if it is correctly displaying it.
My g1 displayed 3g when i had the t-mobile firmware on it. When i put a different one, H or something was displayed. The tp2 i have is the same way. I put a different firmware on it and it went from 3g to H now. I am not using the t-mobile firmware but one of the 6.5 roms. I would bet t-mobile put the 3g icon on purpose.
H and 3G are the same thing on the phone. It just depends on what your ROM is setup to show it as.

they are not the same:
3G = 364 Kbps
HSDPA (3.5G) = 1.5-3 Mbps
i get at least 650kbps with 3G only icon. So i think im on the H

I was referring to the phone just showing 3G or H not the actual speeds.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. When I was on the stock ROM I only saw 3G with 2 bars and this was at my house. Now that I'm on a cooked ROM, I see H all the time with my 2 bars at my house. I only get the H when I'm at home, but when I'm at work I get 3G with full bars. I don't even have the option to use HSDPA checked, I have it unchecked in the options.
I'm sure the H has to do with the cooked ROMs or custom taskbars. Idk!

How to check whether my H/3g icon working properly?

Hello there,
May i know how can i make sure that my current desire's H/3g icon is working properly? I am having the H icon only for most of the area. My service provider claims to have 3g data network. So hoping someone can help me or give me some advice. Thanks
Download a speedtest app and see if you are getting H speeds.
i tried with speedtest apps and the result is 2000+ kbps download. is that H speed ? I not sure about how fast the H speed would go..
Theoretical maximum with 3G/UMTS is 2000 kbps as I now, but often not mor than 1000 kbps. HSDPA, which is setup on top of the 3G protocol (which means its also a 3G Network) reaches around 15000 kbps maximum, but depends on signalquality and how many phones are near you. So something between 1000 kbps and 6000 kbps is normal.

The H icon only appears when your phone is actively transmitting or receiving data, otherwise the 3G icon appears

Yes, and H is better than 3G
Yep as above - you do realise H is better than 3G right H = 3.5G

[Q] 3G?

Hey, so I'm confused. I activated 3G on my phone but it is not showing "3G" but it shows a "H" icon instead. My friend told me that "H" is slower than "3G". I'm not sure if it's the fault with the phone or there is some settings I'm missing.
I've set the phone on GSM/WCDMA auto.
Please help!
H is HSDPA
Dont panic, H stands for HSDPA, which is faster 3G setting for the network. In order of speed you will see
G - basic GPRS - slowest data speeds
E - EDGE - Enhanced GPRS - A bit faster than G but not going to set your world on fire
3G - Faster connection
H - Fastest connection
Which one of these you get depends on the cell you are connected to, the quality of the connection and how many people are on the cell (sort of, I am no expert).
In summary, dont panic! Your phone is fine, you have a great network connection, but I am afraid you have a friend who is wrong. Break it to him gently.

I thought Edge was slower than GPRS?
My Vodafone Wildfire S shows 'E' at home (whereas my O2 Nokia phone shows "G" or "H" depending on the weather)
