But like the actual unlocking process fastboot and command prompt
according to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577 its not a problem.
For Mac, no drivers needed, unzip Evo4GLTERoot.zip to your Downloads directory then open up a terminal and do:
Code:
cd Downloads/Evo4GLTERoot
chmod 755 *
sh runmemac.sh
thats a direct copy and paste from the page..make sure it applies to you though.

I apologize if this is already answered somewhere. I searched everywhere and could not find anything, but I might be using the wrong wording.
Anyways I am attempting to root my G2. I have managed to get adb onto the computer and it recognizes my phone. However, the next step in the wiki says to:
ON YOUR PC: Unzip the gfree_temp-root.zip files to a folder. From a cmd window or terminal, navigate to that folder and execute these commands:
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
$ adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
$ adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
$ adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
$ adb push root /data/local/tmp/root
$ adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
However, it gives me error messages such as 'adb' is not recognized. I'm sure I am missing stupid but I cannot figure it out. Thanks in advance.
Just use visionary, it is much easier. Click temp root and when it is done perm root

I checked the path a few times because I thought that was the problem. However, it all looks good. I'm going to try on another computer tonight and see if that helps.
Did you make sure that all the necessary drivers were installed?
When you type 'ADB Devices' does it show your phone?
I used visionary and terminal emulator and haven't had any problems at all.

Yes it shows my phone when I type 'ADB Devices' That's what's causing my confusion. I've reinstalled all the drivers that are needed. From what I am seeing it SHOULD work.
I am currently in the process of rooting my G2 and when i have to enter this command, (adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/* and adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter) i get no such file or directory everytime. All other commands enter in without a problem. What is chmod 775 anyway. it is the only thing not previously included in the rooting process. Can anyone please give me some feedback on what is going wrong here
thanks
What ever you are doing stop now.
You're doing that the hard way. Here's what u do goto theunlockr.com and then click how to's, then goto the g2 picture then u want to do the how to get temp root first then once that is completed do the permanent root tutotrial. Everything on theunlockr has a video and text so u can't f up.
My best wishes and if u need help like asap jus send a pm or email me [email protected] gmail

Where to find 'chmod' answers
I had to exchange my G2. The one T-Mo sent is running Gingerbread(?) ver 2.3.4
I've been to theunlocker.com and in the procedure to downgrade so that I can root, http://theunlockr.com/2011/07/22/how-to-downgrade-a-gingerbread-t-mobile-g2-so-it-can-be-rooted/ two of the steps are to enter in terminal:
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
and
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
When I do this I get 'chmod' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
I have spent several hours in the forums and can't find where I've gone wrong or where to find 'chmod'
Someone please help me
SOLVED, use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 and also (from one noob to another) it helps to type 'adb shell chmod....' if that is one of the issues you're having
You don't seem to be in the directory that you have adb installed. Change directory to there and you should be good

On my xp it installed to c:/program files/android/android-sdk/platform-tools/ automatically, maybe try there. If you can't find it try downloading just the adb program and putting it in your adk platform-tools folder. You did also download the android development package right?

I need someone to do me a favor for a project I'm working on. You will need ADB and to know how to follow instructions.
YOUR BOOTLOADER MUST BE UNMODIFIED. *mine is or i would get it myself*
Note: don't type the $ or the # charcters $=not root #=root. It lets you know you are in the right place.
1. From linux terminal: adb shell
$ su
[if linux you will be asked for your password]
# dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/data/local/tmp/bootloader.img
[some details about bytes done]
# exit (exit until you don't have a # or $ to the left)
2. adb pull /data/local/tmp/bootloader.img
3. ls -al bootloader.img
You should see the bootloader.img file here of non-zero size.
4. put a link as a reply to a download.
From Windows:
1. open an ADB command window (shift+right click on your Platform-Tools folder)
adb shell
$ su
# dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/data/local/tmp/bootloader.img
[some details about bytes done]
# exit (exit until you don't have a # or $ to the left)
2. adb pull /data/local/tmp/bootloader.img
the file will be pulled to your platform-tools folder (or wherever you have your ADB files)
4. put a link as a reply to a download.
Upload and leave the link. Thanks in advanced. The sooner I get this file the sooner I can publish my project.

For some reason, whenever I try to copy something from Gmail on my AT&T S3, it crashes Gmail and forces me back to the home screen. I'm completely stock and not rooted. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Go into terminal do the next:
su
mv /data/clipboard /data/oldclipboard
mkdir /data/clipboard
chmod 775 /data/clipboard
chown system.system /data/clipboard
Reboot
Should sort it

Terminal emulator kinda the command prompt equivalent on our phones. And yes you can find it in the play store

Phone needs to be rooted, I'm unable to change the folder name.
I'm not too familiar with Linux commands but if you can use the terminal emulator to just clear out the folder (delete all) then it'll fix the issue.

When I try a rm (delete) on a file in the clipboard directory, I get permission denied. It looks like the phone needs to be rooted.
Also I am unable to execute the 'su' command.

Cheers thanks, I've seen that workaround but I'm not prepared to root my phone yet.
I just open a text message. Press and hold the blank text field. wait for the little popup saying clipboard. Tap that. then press and hold on each entry to delete them. Keep your clipboards clean folks!
Tapping on the clipboard icon doesn't do anything. The clipboard is corrupted, probably need to hard reset or root it to clear it out.

I am also having the issue of not being able to copy paste anything, and when I follow this advice I do not find testdata just testservice, which has no cache to clear. I am completely stock latest OTA as of 9.19 and not rooted. Any other suggestions to fix this?
Test service didn't work. You have to be rooted and delete the files within the clipboard folder and fix permissions. I've looked everywhere on the interwebz and this is apparently the only way.

Let your rom boot. Connect the phone to your computer. In your computer go into command line. Then in command line navigate to the folder where the adb.exe is stored. If you have adb.exe in C:\android then you will type "cd C:\android". Then type "adb reboot bootloader". Type without quotation marks. This is the most reliable way how to boot into bootloader. You should have known this by now if you seriously want to be a developer.
You can also create a .bat file to execute the script. To do this create a text file and type there first line: "adb kill-server second" line: "adb reboot bootloader". Without quotiation marks of course. Then save the text file. Then make sure you can see the known extensions in windows and change the extension of the file to .bat. Put the file in the folder with adb and you only need to double click it to reboot into bootloader. You can create a shortcut to the file that you can put into your desktop.
Thank you but it worked this time

That will kill the first server IF you have one opened, in order to let the new one to work (the one to reboot bootloader). It is a safe state to say the least because if you have one adb shell opened and you want to run the .bat that will open another shell, it won't work. And that's why you need the adb kill-server second .
