Hi. So I am deciding about rooting my HTC Desire HD and have few questions.
1.Is it free to root it?
2. What rooting does?
3. If I root it, it will be faster, in which way? ( It will load games faster? Games which are lagging now won`t lagg? ( for example Survival Run) or it will be faster at switching at menu?
4. I have Android 2.3.5 now, if I set Android 4.0 phone won`t be slower?
5. Can I install apps on rooted phone which does not require rooting, or just apps for rooted phones?
Thanks

The best answers for these questions will come from your own Googling. With that said, the short answers:
1. Yes, it's free.
2. Rooting lets you have full control over your phone. Mainly this means tethering and custom ROMs.
3. Rooting will not make the phone faster, but a custom ROM might; depends on which ROM.
4. No, but 2.3.5 is the last supported by HTC, so anything after that will always have minor issues. Depends on the ROM.
5. Yes, you can install apps that don't require root on a rooted phone.
The main thing that wanted to root in the first place was the ability to remove bloat and have your phone completely adfree. I had a game with a large ad banner which I wanted gone and it did. Shortly after I tried my first custom rom.

Hi guys,
This is a very nooby question, but i was wondering exactly what benefit do i get for rooting my desire. Is rooting only required to install newer roms?
Also, if i were to simply root the desire would i lose any functionality such as bluetooth not working or wifi not working or the LEDs working?
I'm thinking of following the following guides for rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=672770
But before I do that, I just wanted to know what exactly is the point of rooting. any comments would be appreciated
Some benefits are:
Flashing Custom Roms
Marked Enabler ( If you cant get payed apps in your country )
You can Customize your phone a bit more
Flaws :
You loose your warranty...
Yea thats what i was wondering too.
I guess I wont root my phone for a bit, until the 2.2 roms are more stable, because i can already search for paid apps
thanks for the response
Even more nooby question.. what is this flashing custom ROM?
yea.. im new
Flashing ROMS enables you to customise the phone. On the ROM i installed i did not put facebook, twitter, friendstream, quick office and many other apps that come with the phone as i dont use them.
The main reason why i rooted the phone was to install a ROM with A2SD+ on it.
On standard android operating system the apps are installed on the internal memory which is only around 140mb, Basically A2SD+ installs all the apps on the SD card.
I have installed around 85 apps and still have around 102mb free.
P.s. i used this rooting guide, http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
But i did not use that way to install a2sd because i installed a2sd+ instead.
Hi,
Im totally new to phone flashing, rooting etc. Please answer few of my questions before I make something bad to my beloved Desire
I have Wavesecure installed. However it has a limitation based on Android ROM - application cannot start GPS by itself. Seems to be secure-issued thing. I do not want to discuss it - just found out that if I will root my Desire then Wavesecure is able to start GPS tracking based on my SMS.
This is very important for me as I find this feature "a must" if phone is stolen.
I do not want to change anything in my ROM, do not want to flash new roms - just need root for Wavesecure.
And here is my major question - if done with some of tutorials:
- will I be able to run smooth still my old HTC rom without any problems, data loss etc? So will it just have root feature and nothing changed?
- if HTC releases new firmware update - can I install it from HTC or I will have to skip?
- if I install HTC release - will I have to root again?
1) rooting with the Stock image is fine, and you will be able to create backups of your phone in the future (which is always helpful)
2) Yes you can install them but you loose your rootedness and as such use of wavesecure
3) as above and yes, but you dont have to stick with the HTC ROM's, the cooked ROMs on here are way more fun
Thanks!
Is there any good guide for rooting only with 0.8 bootloader? All I found is rooting+flashing and I would like to avoid flash.
Wants only to add root feature, do not change ROM and last but not least - do not loose any settings/data...
sorry but in order to root your phone you have to flash a new rom
you are currently using a htc official unrooted rom
you need to install a htc rooted rom (this is just the htc official rom (yours) with root features)
this will clear the data off your phone, however if you have enabled the default backup feature of the phone most of this will be backed up and restored, you can even download 3rd party software such as titanium backup and mybackup pro from the market
Thanks for the info.
So I think I will wait for official 2.2 ROM and then I'll flash. Should be in few days/weeks now as already got 2.1-update1 installed via HTC.
Indeed, i was running that 2 days ago and 2.2 will eventually drop, just give it a week or so after and the Cooked ROMS should be up to scratch
Ok, i had a G1 & i never rooted it, now i have the the Desire & havent bothered rooting it as i think Android seems to be cool from stock.
But theres a few apps i want to use that require root access to use, so my 3 questions are.
1, if i root my Desire do i have to install a different rom? As i like the way the stock Android runs
2, is there a sort of "1 click root" like the iphone jailbreak, as ive seen apps like "easy root" that claim it instantly roots your phone, bit then on here people talk about gold cards ect...
3, if i do root the Desire, will i still get the network pushed OTA updates? As im on vodafone & they havent pushed 2.2 out yet so i want to get it from them, also if i will get them, when i update will it un-root my phone like iphones updatespatch jailbreaks.
Thanks in advance for replys, as i said im not interested in usijg custom/different roms, i only want to use apps that require root access, like cache cleaners ect... but i still want the stock android + sence with my OTA updates.
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
1. there are rooted version of the stock ROM available, check the Dev forum
2. Follow this - http://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howto-root-your-htc-desire/
3. No you won't get it, and returning to stock should you want to will obviously remove root. It's best to get your stock Vodafone ROM to have for warranty reasons...
Greetings,
I am planning to buy the HTC desire 2day .. but am living in egypt.. so we didnt get the froyo update yet :/ .. so i was wondering if the lvl 1 rooting (named shell rooting) done to the desire using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 will allow me to install apps to the sd card and installing themes maybe.. because those are the only 2 things that i need that cant be done in the 2.1 stock ROM
I used the search feature.. but couldn't find anything about rooting levels .. the above thread mention there are 3 levels of rooting.. so i dont really know the difference.. never owned an android device before
Oh .. and i bricked my last htc phone after flashing a rom.. so i wont ever flash a custom rom again.. so here goes my next question.. i can root the phone and use the stock rom while enjoying the rooting features or do i have to install a custom rom? and when the official middle east froyo update is released can i easily unroot the phone and install the new update?
Kindly reply, i will wait for the reply b4 i buy the phone
Thnx in advance

yes shell rooting will let you do everything you want to do, the only thing it lacks is write access to the nand chip while the device is booted, but it does allow it from recovery, dont worry about bricking, unrevoked is fool proof now
Thanks for the reply
Okay last 5 questions lol ... plz bear with me... as i cant really risk losing another 700$ phone
1- am a bit confused... should i use unrevoked rooting or the lvl 1 rooting mentioned in link in the above post .. which one allows me to install apps on sd card and install themes with minimum alteration to the stock rom? anyone of them is 100% safe?
2- i can continue using my stock rom and still enjoy the rooting features.. no need to flash custom roms .. right?
3-am i going to be able to update my rooted phone when the official froyo is released or do i have to unroot it?
4- lets say that for any reason i have to use the phone's warranty ... so i have to unroot my phone 1st b4 going to htc .. is it easily done?
5- a bit offtopic: The only way i found to change themes without altering the stock rom is using 3 apps called : PandaHome,OpenHome and aHome (themes for these apps are even posted on the android market) .. but the thing is .. do they require a vanilla android or they are compatible with sense ui too?

1 unrevoked imho is more simple and more popular and tested
2 corect
3 you have to unroot
4 easier than rooting just download ruu file, run on your pc connected to phone and thats all. U will loose root+old rom+data+custom recovery image
BTW greetings to Egypt! Been there (HRG) at february and it was warm and nice

1. Go with Unrevoked, it's safe and most commonly used method for rooting HTC Desires, check your Hboot version beforehand to see if it's compatible (it should be if you're on 2.1 eclair) and just make sure you read the guide properly first and nothing should go wrong
Rooting will not give you A2SD or A2SD+, you'll have to install a custom ROM to get those benefits (or wait for Froyo with its own Apps2SD function)
You also won't be able to flash themes as the stock ROM is odexed and won't support it, you'll need to flash a deodexed custom ROM for that.. although you can use apps like LauncherPro to customise your phone a little.
2. Yup, rooting doesn't mean you have to change the ROM, it just means you have the choice to through the additional Recovery program installed during rooting
3. You can apply the OTA froyo update, it'll unroot your phone though.. you could use Unrevoked again to get root afterwards
4. I would definitely recommend unrooting the phone if possible before running a warranty claim, I haven't had to do it but I've read it's relatively easy
5. All the launcher/home replacements should work fine with Sense, i've got LauncherPro/Sense/Launcher2 (vanilla android home) all working fine on mine, just install ClearDefaultsHome so you can choose which Home screen you want
The safe option is wait for the Froyo update, it'll give you Apps2SD.. but personally I'm glad I rooted and flashed a custom ROM, made the phone so much better! It to follow all the rooting/flashing tutorials properly then you should be fine, though obviously there are risks involved.. as you already know!
Well, thanks to ur replies guys .. i am now the proud owner of an htc desire! :d
So, I am a complete Android newbie. My Defy is my first Android device.
I just rooted it with SuperOneClick and now I ask...
What next?
I am not 100% sure what the perks of rooting are.
I am running Froyo, so I don't think I need to install another ROM, as I see no problems with the one running now.
What are some things I can do with this here rooted Defy?
You need root to run programs that access the phone's system: titanium backup, milestone overclock, etc. You may begin by installing superuser, which manages which programs are given root rights. When u install a program that uses root, it will ask whether u allow it and store it for future reference.
I got SuperUser installed, as well as Titanium.
How safe is overclocking the Defy?

Who can tell? No one has owned and overclocked defy for more than half year.
Thanks ^_^
