Please ignore my ignorant noobness. I'm coming from an iPhone 4 where things were simplified for me in small bits...lol. Ive always had a jailbroken phone because stock iPhones were no help to me. But I moved on to the ATT Galaxy Note 2 and now have a need to root it. However, I'm lost about how to do it. I looked up guides and many point to the Youtube xda video for all variants. However, many ATT users have found it did not help them. I looked myself and could not find the option for my variant of phone (ATT). So I searched the forums and I found some things, but I'm just not knowledgeable yet on how to decipher what is being discussed and terminology yet. If you ask me about iPhone I can answer those terms and questions easily. Rooting is another world for me at the moment. Please dont discount me as someone who should stay away because if that were the case, none of this would have developed with that mindset. I'm still learning and I'm just not there yet.
So, Where should I begin to root my ATT Samsung Galaxy Note 2 i317UCALJ2 (JRO03C.I317UCALJ2).

yea, currently reading that forum
So I've finished without any hickups
I have a few questions though now. I've heard I need to backup my phone now before continuing. I've downloaded titanium backup and told it to do a batch backup of my system files and apps, however, I'm not sure this is the backup everyone is suggesting. Some people have mentioned using TWRP. I'm not sure if I need that or what. I'm also noticing this:
"For CWM Recovery (cwm6-recovery-i317.tar.md5) Flash using Odin once again with pda only nothing else ticked!"
What is that for? And do I need to do that. I want to have a safe rooting experience so I'm sorry if I sound too cautious.
Yes its a custom recovery... I use cwm. U can use twrp ..flash in odin under pda make sur repartition is not cheaked...boot into recovery by pressing vol up home button then power hold till samsung screen shows release. ..then back up

So I used TWRP(I think) and via instructions downloaded Goo Manager. Then did menu> Install OpenRecoveryScript. Ran that, downloaded (something), and was successful. Now I'm lost as to what to do. I don't see TWRP, and Ive been reading and it doesn't appear anyone has a step by step process after the steps I took above. Any ideas?
UPDATE. Nvm, I figured it out...lol. man I feel slow at this

After following that step by step and you have the clockworkmod recovery installed, turn your phone off hold volume up and home and press and hold power button to get to recovery screen, I would factory reset data, wipe cache/dalvik flash the Rom that you want flash the kernel for that Rom and reboot.

I don't think it's random at all. I think people that used root methods from other carriers lost their marbles when flashing.
You have any proof to this? I haven't really seen anything that points one way or the other and I'd like to try and get to the bottom of it.

Hello XDA,
I am trying to root my new GT-N7100. I have had previous experience with Galaxy S3 and custom roms but with windows. I am trying to root my Note 2 with a mac book pro (heimdall method). I have followed every step carefully and dont seem to go anywhere. I followed steps from this link:
galaxynote2.com
The problem :
After I follow the last step (8 - Pressing UP+HOME+POWER), All I get is the Note 2 splash screen flashing as if there is a graphical glitch. The entire stuff just glitches up and down for a few times like a old TV and eventually the phone goes off, but the haptic feedback is active when I touch the keys besides home button so i am guessing the CWM recovery is working but just that there is nothing to see. Not sure what to do, any help is gladly appreciated.
Oh and another problem is that I get horrible static during any VOIP calls like Skype or Viber. Does anyone know whats the problem?
TIA,

Use windows only if you are new to android. Try using a friend's, neighbor's, cyber cafe computer. Heimdall needs experience. Or use virtual machine to install Windows trial like windows 8 enterprise evaluation

You're overcomplicating things. You don't need a Mac or a Windows machine, or ODIN or Heimdall to root your Note II. You don't even need a PC at all. All you need is Exynos Abuse.
Just make sure your handset is in good, working order, (i.e. - No bugs or goofy crap leftover from the failed rooting attempts.) and root using the Exynos Abuse *.apk from Chainfire. Just enable "Unknown Sources" in Settings > Security, and install the *.apk. Once it's installed, open it up and just click to root. It's that easy. All the relevant information, as well as the *.apk, is in the thread linked below.

On a different note, when i head over to ODIN mode by pressing down+home+power, custom binary download : Yes (3 counts)
Not sure where to head.

It looks like you may need to ODIN-flash back to stock. If you can get on a Windows machine, flash back to stock and then reroot. Once you do that, you can install your preferred custom recovery using MobileODIN. That should take care of you.

Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKwhAVj5Feg Outdated. try CF-Auto-Root
Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.
But this is what you generally do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946701
Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3
For a full list of roms and descriptions or if your just addicted to flashing, then here's the stockpile of almost every rom made for the galaxy s3 t999
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088179
Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037390
Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.
Also if any suggestions to improve this post let me know.

I like this post, would save those useless threads how do I root even though it's sticky all over. Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.
Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

You are serious ? You rooted you $$$ GS3 witjout knowing what is Odin? Smeels of a brick is in the air.:fingers-crossed: Well Odin is a PC tool to reformat your S3 to its original state unrooted and stock. You just need to download is right .tar file for your device and carrier found in the main READ BEFORE posts on the forum and flash it with ALL THE procedure done correctly, unless, your phone will be a nice paper holder.

A little while ago I was intrigued by rooting my phone and possibly trying something different. At the moment it is rooted and I ran into a few problems. I have no idea what I am doing but I have a fairly good mind set as long as I am taught by doing. I am mostly hands on with this and reading anything at this point isn't helping. When I rooted my phone I ran into a few issues but managed to fix a few things on my own. Gallery stopped working but got that fixed and snote does not work now. I am assuming it will not work due to Knox. I guess what I am looking to do is understand fully the ways to flash the proper things and how. So far all I have done is rooted using cl auto root then I found a stock Rom which I flashed after and so far no other than snote. At the time I wanted to obtain note 3 apps like air command. Now that 4.4.2 or whatever is coming out I am stuck at what to do. I am also trying to learn and do it the right way. Slow is good. I appreciate the reach out and thanks again.

No worries.
Let's start with KitKat, the next version of firmware to be pushed out whenever ATT feels like it.
The phone needs to be totally stock, non-rooted, no custom recovery, all the original apps. If it's not, the Over The Air update will fail, Usually not a problem since within a week or two one of our gurus gets the files and builts a flashable zip file.
When you flash a ROM it usually with just contain the /system directory. That's the guts of the ROM. Has the apps, ROM properties, it's where the super user command lives.
You can download a ROM. Use unzip and look at the files in there. If a zip file has kernel.img or modem.img the builder has included the modem file, which drives network connections. And the kernel file, which I consider the heart of the ROM.
There are two main custom recovery options. TWRP and CWM.
Here's a good guide for TWRP.
http://www.addictivetips.com/android/what-is-twrp-how-to-install-use-it-on-android-devices-guide/
Explains flashing. backing up your ROM, restoring, etc. A must read.
Here's a guide I wrote that explains how to got back to the original stock ROM the Note 2 shipped with, and getting it back to the 4.3 OTA.
Another good read. But I may be a touch biased.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618447
Since you did the CF-ROOT, you know how to use ODIN, You can flash TWRP from ODIN. Instructions are in my guide.
As Knox hosed up Note 2, I doubt it. If you want to practice, read the TWRP guide. Then read my guide, go to Post #3. Do option 2. You will flash TWRP, then download one of the stock ROMs built by one of the gurus I mentioned above.
That will get you rooted and should fix your SNote issues.
I know at this point it will fail as I am rooted and if one try to do an update it says I messed with it. I will read your guides above and see what I can make of it. Using Odin was fairly simple but still curious as to which place to put the files in Odin and is it better to put files on ex's card, sdcard or do it from pc

A majority of the flashes in ODIN require the files in PDA. Any deviation from that will hopefully be stated in the instructions.
I'm not sure what you mean by this ?
is it better to put files on ex's card, sdcard or do it from pc
Are you still talking about ODIN? If so from PC......
Yes sorry... I have mobile Odin as well which if I am not mistaken allows you to do the same. Or is it strictly for seeing what you have flashed?

Not sure. I strictly use the PC version. Like what's in my guide. The ODIN 3.07 I think I posted.
Before I go to far here. I just wanted to clarify a few things. I have ai317m which is Rogers Canadian note 2. I am not sure if this makes any difference or not with twrp or the toms u were referring to in your guide. I guess for now let's see if I can get it back to stock so I can for now get back to New Jurkat update. I meant to mention since I had flashed a stock Rom after cfauto that the battery and speed has been great. I can run like 2 to 3 days without charging.
Anyways I am looking at guide now and trying to figure out which one I am supposed to use. Oh and I believe I have twrp installed already just fighting to get booted into it. Been giving me a hard time.

Just realized your guide is the same one I have been using. It has made the most sense to me. I guess the issue screwing me up is finding compatible roms for my phone. Also when I install this rom to 4.1.1 am I losing what I have or will it all remain. Then update to 4.3

The 4.1.1 will torch everything. What are you looking to save? Apps ? If so use like Titanium Backup or Mybackup Pro to save them off.
Save them to external sdcard.
As far as what is a compatible ROM, everything under the AT&T Galaxy Note II Android Development is good. There are different flavors. Stick with stock to start off with.

Backing up using TB pro.... Have found one other issue besides snote not working and that is I cannot copy add or change anything on exd card. This is even after I had to format it earlier when I did a clean wipe a few days again. I am doing a sync to drop box and one other online drive. When that is done I will try to do another backup to PC. What's correct way or best way getting into teepee or should I even worry about it. Should I just flash Twrp and then flash 4.1.1 and then update to 4.3?

I am downloading 4.1.2. I want to make sure of the ones I have. You are probably right that I should do 4.1.2 first. Or do you think I should just do 4.3 from sams. Would be nice to get all working again properly.
