No 4G HSPA+ IN Northern Metro Detroit area - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue around the States.
My issue:
I can get an LTE signal with no issue, but when I leave the LTE reception area I cannot get any data signal, not even edge.
I thought I had a defective phone because the online chat support person said go to the local store and swap out my SIM card. I did this in the AM and when I got home I noticed it was still not getting any data signal. I went back and swapped phones and the new phone is having the same issue.
My next step is to call AT&T and see if they can look in to the local antennas and see if they are the root cause.
The good news is that I traded the grey phone in for a white version! I came from a white GS3 GT-I9300.

That is really strange. I live in the Detroit area as well. I have been around town and have had consistent LTE coverage, occasionally I have dropped back to HSPA+(even edge). I have noticed a couple times I would not have any data at all (kinda strange for a phone not even 2 weeks old and I haven't switched roms yet). I usually just reboot and its back. Have you tried to use data while on the phone? It should fall back to HSPA+ when on a call, if not you may have a defective unit. I just upgraded from a white I-9300 as well:good:

All of a sudden today the HSDPA signal came back today! I'm pretty sure there was a network issue the pay couple of days. I wondering if they were prepping for the holiday break? Anyway the issue appears to have fixed itself.
@jb313 how do you like coming from the 9300? I think is a big improvement. I'm loving the s-pen and larger screen.

Yeah, I had some connectivity issues the last couple days but seems to be better now. I love the Note 2! We finally have LTE! That was the reason for the switch. It either this or get that ATT S3. I wasn't quite sold on the ATT version of the S3 using the Snapdragon dual core, despite watching videos, etc. Then, the screen size. At times I felt the S3 screen could be a little larger- I have not had this complaint with the Note 2!! I love everything about it so far. People look in shock when I show my phone to them- the size is pretty much perfect. I haven't really used the S-Pen though. My fear is that now I won't be able to use a smaller device again!! The 9300 is an awesome phone!! I've had Jellybean on it since September with no issues at all. I am still second guessing if i should put it up on ebay. I may keep it just to give myself perspective on how large the GN2 really is!!

Anyone else considering switching to a different phone?

hi guys,
so i have an S3 and i LOVE it to death. i am running Task AOKP rom which makes the phone 100000 times better but even on stock TW, the phone was great. however, what i am noticing (and from doing some reading a lot of other people notice as well) is that the reception of the phone is really lacking. over the past few days, i have been doing some experimenting with my S3 and a few other phones that i have access to. almost in every single situation, the S3 reception was drastically worse than the other phones. here are a few examples:
1) yesterday me and the wife went to a friend's wedding. when we got there, i had zero reception (x on the reception bars) while my wife's iphone had 3 bars (both ATT).
2) at work, i always have 1-2 bars and not that great reception while my coworker with an HTC phone on ATT has full service.
3) at my house, i have a few areas that the phone just struggles to get even a single bar and both my wife's iphone as well as all my previous phones (galaxy s2, iphone 4, blackberry etc..) never had that issue.
this is my second S3 unit and the previous one was not that great reception wise as well. i tried every kernel and rom you can imagine and even reverted back to stock a few times just to make sure its not rom related.
at this point, i am actually considering selling the S3 and going with an HTC One X even though i prefer everything about the S3.
have you tried different modems...just a sugestion.....some people get better reception when they flash different modems

yep, tried every single one of the modems that has been released so far. at first i was sure that it is just my phone or my area but a google search shows that this is pretty known issue with the S3 which is not giving me too much hope. like i said, i LOVE the phone and love its features but this one is starting to get me down.
Are you using a protective case? I've read where some cases cause reception issues.
I am quite sure that the radio in the sgs3 is not as strong as many other phones I've had. Wifi and mobile connection are much weaker compared to other devices. I am also sure that its the hardware as no matter what modem or rom I'm running its low signal in areas where friends on the same carrier with different devices are fine. It's normally not a big deal in areas with a strong signal but in areas with a weaker signal its very noticeable when others with different hardware have a signal still.

yep, that's what most posts are saying in random forums. if it is a hardware issue, no modem in the world will make it better. i also agree that it is not a big deal in areas with strong signal but yesterday i had zero service which meant no incoming or outgoing calls for 3-4 hours while my wife had no issues with her iPhone (made me look really bad especially after all the **** i give her about owning an iPhone )
Its weird because in places other people dont have reception (they have iphones and other android phones), such as elevators, basements, in sky scrapers, i have reception and they don't. Maybe the network i'm running on (rogers) is well implanted in the city but i honestly have not noticed any worse reception in my GS3 compared to my other phones like the GS2 or iPhone 4
I switched from an iPhone 4 and I have actually got better reception and call quality with my S3 than I ever did with my iPhone. I am on ATT too.
Have you tried disabling LTE to see if you can force it to HSPA?
also have you tried a new sim just for good measure?
I haven't had much issues with respects to service when comparing it to my Nokia Lumia 900 and iPhone 4

I get better reception that my old iPhone 4 and my infuse... areas where I use to drop calls don't anymore. Example: an area up north where I go shoot firearms, I would lose service about 1 mile before heading up the mountain road, now, I have service the entire time except for about a mile up when I go between a sub station and a dam, but once I pass it, I'm good to go. Many parts of i5 I would drop service, now there is only 1 part where service gets spotty and I may drop the call. Several other places that I learned drop calls no longer do for me since getting the s3... not sure why our experiences are different, maybe you had bad luck and received 2 defective devices. I'm in California btw, splitting my time between sf bay area, Sacramento and Redding.

I get great reception as far as I can tell. At my friend's house, his iPhone gets awful, call-droppingly bad reception and I have no issues. Both AT&T.
*#*#4636#*#*
put that in your dialpad and than go to phone options and btu it to gsm/lte preffered. if you were like me the setting should be on wcdma originally in which case i had horrible reception like you
I notice no issues with stock.

I'm pretty annoyed by the lack of OEM accessories that we were promised.
Also annoyed that JB hasn't been officially released yet by the four major USA carriers.
But I'll be darned if there is anything better to switch to.
Phone OR manufacturer. We complain a lot, but Samsung and the Galaxy series have always been the Android leaders.
I get great reception. Full 4g lte coverage in my area. S3 is a great device. No regrets. Best phone out there by far.
I am getting signal and "0" call drops when in lift too and in car parking lots... where all my previous phones used to drop signal crazy!!!
I get great reception. ATT, Miami. My old iPhone's couldn't compete.

Switching from evo lte to sg3...happy?

I know a lot of ppl have switched from the evo lte to the sg3 due to the lte connectivity issue. I have the opportunity to do the same this afternoon and was just wondering if anyone else has done it and if so are you happy you did? Does the sg3 really keep and hold lte connection better? I've been an HTC/sense person since the og evo and I'm willing to drop it if the lte is truly that much better. Not sure how I feel about TW but then again there is always a sip for that. Thanks so much
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I am in the same boat as you. I'm meeting up with someone tomorrow to buy a gs3. I have gotten a few good opinions from people that have owned both phones and are very happy that they switched. I feel like I am making the right move, at the same time it's a hard switch. I also have been an htc guy since the og evo, I had one of the first galaxy phones and I hated it, the gs3 seems to be a sweet phone though. I think Samsung has fixed things like reception and gps. I am going to miss Sense though.
I have both phones and there is a definite difference in LTE reception. The s3 connects to LTE anywhere inside my house. With the Evo I have to take it outside to get a connection and even then its not as stable and as soon as I walk back inside the connection drops.
You do know that if you complain to sprint and they can replicate the lte connection issue they will swap the lte for the sg3. That's what I doing. Talked to sprint supervisor for twenty minutes last night he said the corporate store would just swap it. No need to buy a sg3 unless you just want both phones.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Well I'm in Denver, we don't have lte here yet so I can't really go that route. I'm more fed up with a poorly designed proximity sensor and bad multitasking. I used to buy htc because they worked correctly right out of the box and I feel like they dropped the ball on this one. I'll either sell my evo or give it to the wife since she has a evo design.
I made the switch just over week ago and I am happy I did. There are certain things about the EVO LTE that I like better. (Email app, Camera) but the multitasking on the GS3 is way better. For example. I stream Pandora in the car almost 100% of the time. If I had to take a call and the call lasted more than 2 minutes, Pandora would have to reload the station or I would have to manually restart the app. On the GS3 it resumes music right where it left off. Sense would occasionally reload and sometimes lag. I have had no reloads or lag on the GS3.
LTE connection is better also. GS3 connects to LTE signal faster when I enter an LTE area, and it has LTE signal where the EVO does not even pick it up. I still have the EVO active on another line, and I have done LTE comparisons over the past week when I am out in the car. GS3 was a good switch for me.
Make the switch it will be the best decision you ever made I had the evo had many problems went thru 3 different phones so glad I switched to the s3 much easier to root a lot more development for the phone if thats your kind of thing, the only thing I like better on the Evo is if you wanted to print a PDF document you can do it with the stock rom the Galaxy s3 will only do printing to a Samsung printer unless you buy a after market app like printbot, or something like that doesn't work as good as stock on evo.

Agreed make the switch...I had two evo lte's gave mine to my son when i got a gs3...I called sprint and they swapped out the two evos (my wife and sons)..now we all have the gs3 and couldn'tbe more happier.. the evos just didn't hold 4g lte at all. When I took them to the sprint store they did a side by side comparison in signal and swapped them out immediately. .loving this phone. ..

I carried an EVO for 2 years. Loved HTC. Sammy had let me down with a few smart phones, both android and Winmo. I went through 2 different EVO LTE phones, and had terrible reception problems with both. Full bars with EVO, zero bars, no signal, and wouldn't switch to roaming with the LTE. Both were active. Checked out my buddies GS3 one day to make sure that the GPS and cellular radios were good. Bought one about 3 weeks after launch. Had to wait for BB to get the pebble blue in stock. Most wonderful phone that I have ever owned. I thought that my EVO was irreplaceable.....I was wrong. Handed EVO down to wife. She wants my Sammy, just as much as my daughter.
LOVE MY GS3!

So are the radios GPS is unbelievable on this phone
......really best Android phone I've ever owned

My wife has been asking the same question she has the LTE and I have the S3 she likes it but she gets upset that my phone will connect to 4G and hers won't even when sitting them side by side. She is probably going to be making the switch tomorrow.
Everyone's making the switch tomorrow it seems... Is it because the GS3 is going to be 50$?
How did you guys get them to swich the let for thr SG3, ive been Having the lte since the dayvit came out and have been trying to figure out a way to get sprint to swap it for the sg3

[Q] Reception Question

I picked up a GS3 at Sam's Club replacing my iPhone4. So far I'm really enjoying android with only one problem. I have never seen the GS3 go above three bars. Indoors, outdoors all over town, etc it's always three bars. Even my iPhone4 without a case and its crappy antenna issues would get five bars in the exact same places the GS3 is only getting three.
I've searched here and it's evenly split between people saying they get great reception and those saying it's horrible. A lot of issues seem to be on the Verizon network. I'm wondering if this is something I should consider exchanging the phone for? Has anyone exchanged their GS3 for another one and received improved reception?
Flash a different modem. Another note: it doesn't go above 3bars, do you have service issues because of that? If not, leave it alone. You will probably switch it out just to find the same issue. It could be your area. And about the iPhone thing, I have service where my wife's iPhone 4 doesn't.
BTW, Verizon sucks!
Just kidding.

I have the same issue. I'm in the SF Bay Area and even though TMobile's site has where I live and work as dark green (excellent 4g) I am lucky to get even one bar. Half the time I get network errors. Anyone else with TMobile experience anything like this? Any chance it's something that'll get resolved before my 30 day return period ends?
do any of you have other tmobile phones to compare signals with? if so, do that and if there are major differences talk to a tmobile store about getting a replacement.
these might be isolated incidents, because the majority of people are getting fully functional units

my data speeds are *top notch*.
you are either in an area thats out of tmobiles footprint or have a defective unit.
best bet would be to wait till tmobile actually gets the GS4 on display in the store.
when they do, go to your nearest tmob, and do a speedtest.net comparison with the demo model, and yours. if they are similar, then your part of the bay is legacy; if there is a big difference; 3,4 5 etc megabit difference; your unit may be worth exchanging for a new unit.

Still no signal inside my workplace. Will do more tests. It does seem the signal is more stable, but it's only been a couple days.
Also, 4G LTE flashed for a couple seconds at my house. I live in the D.C metro area. Nice.
I have the HTC One in the Phoenix market. LTE is difficult to find more than a few bars on. 4G HSPA+ has been very easy to get full bars on.
I'm somewhat convinced T-Mobile is still working on building out in even LTE and re-farmed markets.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk HD
Its funny how T-Mobile improves their network and yet many years later I still don't have service in places where I had no service maybe 5-6 years ago. And on top of this I noticed even more dead spots. I think T-Mobile should be working on that along with building penatration.....I would much rather have 3G everywhere then LTE almost nowhere.
Lately it became very frustrating since my wife has no service at work, i have no service at work, and i recently moved to different location and still no service....and God forbid I loose my wife in the mall, I have zero chances of finding her because no T-Mobile service inside.
Just got my S4 today and did not realize theres LTE where I work (fremont) which I never saw on my note 2. Even went out to lunch and was still getting LTE the next street over. So just to test I'm now back on my note 2 and it is not picking up LTE at my work. That tells me the radio on the s4 is much better.

yea its something with the S4's phone/modem. I get bars and shows signal strength of 3 to 4 bars and i can make call but no internet in certain areas all around Los Angeles County/Orange County/Las Vegas/NYC. To test it i had my buddy go with me with his LG L9 and my buddy with his LG L9 phone would work fine on the calls and data/internet meanwhile my S4 would only get calls but no data as if it was a deadspot. i would have to go around like 1/4 or so before it would work again. its really strange not to mention annoying. I noticed this started happening to me after i upgraded from MDB to the MDL baseband and after i unlocked the phone using the "debug service menu". i wish i knew someone else with a stock TMO S4 to test my findings out more. I also cant wait for more tmo S4 modems. ive been thinking of ODINing back to stock MDB to test my theory, but i have just been lazy.

i think it was a TMO LTE tower upgrade issues. after doing the Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Network mode > and switching between the WCDMA and GSM one or the other now will work. better to have some internet than no internet, weird how the S4 just wont switch over to the working GSM internet if WCDMA fails....i guess when they coded it they figured if u have bars it "should work in theory" but they were wrong ...personally i think this should be considered a "bug"
I thought I was the only one. I found that if i keep my diztronic tpu case on while in my pocket it destroys all signal for some reason. I take it off and its fine.

I further tested my theory and went without my case all day. It didnt appear to do anything different at all. I am on CM10.1, I think I might go back to stock for awhile to see if it changes the fluctuating signal issue.
Just curious on how everyones signal is and which baseband they are on?
I'm on M919UVUAMDL and I have seen up to 15% of no signal while my S3 had 0 signal loss in a regular day.

Really disappointed in the 3g/4g data signal

I've seen threads of people not happy with the data signal, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I was in a movie theater today. I couldn't get any data signal, not even basic google search. I even tried re-booting and still nothing. Picked up my wife's iPhone 4s and it was flying around internet sites.
I tested the same thing afterwards at the local food market and the exact same thing. My phone, no inside signal, her iPhone, perfect.
How can a phone become so popular with such crappy signal?
I've seen complaints too but I've got to say that my One has been on par with my iPhones, Galaxy S3, Blackberry's, etc... No signal issues here whatsoever
The other person on my plan has an iPhone 5 and we both usually have the same amount of signal anywhere we go

The only huge issue I have with it is its TERRIBLE hand-off, at least when my iPhone 5 or DNA lost 4g LTE it would grab it the moment it was available again. The One just holds onto that crappy 3G for dear life until I force it to go to LTE again.
Edit: Or wait 5-10 minutes.

That's weird! I haven't experienced that problem either. I've only noticed my One on 3G once but the hand off to LTE seemed pretty normal to me. I can't really comment on that issue though because my area is pretty much all LTE so I don't deal with the hand offs.
I wonder if it's a defect in your phone? Does the One allow us to update the PRL? I remember the HTC EVO had an update PRL option that I think could do something with service issues... something or other, I can't really remember.

No I don't think it is, GrayWolf has the same issue. I live in Minnesota and frequently travel to jobsites where there is concrete and such. Because Verizon hasn't upgraded every cell site with LTE yet just "Most of them" I frequently go into 3G. When the device goes into 3G for an extended period of time sometimes it takes a reboot to get back to LTE, most of the time it takes awhile to go back. And sometimes it goes right away, it's pretty annoying to be honest and may make me go to the Droid Maxx.
Lte onoff in the market helps me out. It was used for the thunderbolt to turn off the Lte radio when it was new. I toggle to Lte only, wait for it to get a signal them back to cdma+lte

Your sim card updates the PRL.

I'll get a change to test out my reception later. I do know the 4G on the One seems almost twice as fast as my Rezound though.
I find my signal is much better on the One than on my previous SIII or SGN.
Samsung has the worst radios. The Galaxy Nexus absolutely blew in that respect and, everyone came up with theories about false calibration of bars and whatnot, but the fact remained that it sucked with weak reception and poor hand-off between 3G and LTE.

I found my Samsung Nexus was horrible, my Galaxy S3 was good... but now my One is not good again. I just hung up with a vzw CSR and he told me they had some problems with SIM cards when the One was released and to go get a new one. He said the SIM card could absolutely fix the problem.

How can a phone become so popular with such crappy signal?

My experience has been similar to what you had today. It seems mostly indoors I experienced the problems. I'm wondering, were you able to unlock your phone on day one? I did, and I'm wondering if custom ROMs or other changes we've been able to make have affected our reception.

The Nexus was disappointing in several ways. I didn't go by the bars, but the dBm readout under settings. The Rezound was on par with my DInc, and soon I'll see how The One holds up to that.

No I don't think it is, GrayWolf has the same issue.

My issues were related to a bad ril in CyanogenMod.
Only thing I notice now is that text messages take forever to send.

Is ril part of the ROM? I'm running hyperdrive and wonder if it could be related?

My reception in general was better on my DNA. I am yet to see 5 bars on my One, but I'm also yet to see no signal. Using apps like dropbox from the gallery is nearly impossible, takes too long to load even a couple pictures let alone swipe through them. Don't care, I love this phone. My DNA shipped out to the buyer today. No regrets.
