Hi guys, I have had my note 2 for a week now and i haven't felt the need to root it.
But today I noticed in unable to view the contents of external sd, is this a function of jelly bean or do I need root access
I can see pictures and play music from the external sd but I can't view it directly with es file explorer

Try a different file explorer. Solid Explorer is a good option.
The external sd card on the Note 2 is at /mnt/extSdCard and /storage/extSdCard. I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm

When u look in the settings>storage I can see my phone and sd card storage. When I look in the phone storage through settings it shows a bunch if files that show up in root explorer as my sd card files. I don't see the same directories as my HTC phone had for storage. So /sdcard is my sd card. What directory is the phone storage under? Just / or?

Is the directory that root explorer pulls up by default the phone storage?
mnt/extsdcard is what I was looking for. Fyi if anyone needs it.

Is the way samsung name them which sucks but if you want to moved just files between sd card and internal, use the stock file manager the comes with TW

SD card is your internal memory and if you go to mnt SD cardext that's your external SD card

So since I got my SGS3, I noticed in ES File Manager as well as Root Explorer I can't find the Ext SD folder, however with the stock My Files app the first directories that pop up are Ext SD and SDcard. I don't think my camera pics and other items are being stored on the external SDcard? how do I get to the Ext SD Card from ES Explorer or Root File Manager?
Thanks,

/mnt/ExtSdcard/
To make it easier long press on extsdcard folder and select Link to This Folder. Then go back to the root directory and create the link there.
That's for Root Explorer btw.

I'm looking for a way to symbolically link to the external sd card from within the internal sd card for apps that start in /sdCard but don't let me go up one folder so that I can browse files in /storage/extSdCard. For example, /sdCard/extSdCard. I have accomplished this on my s2 using directory bind but it didn't seem to work on my note 3 for some reason. Sorry if this confuses people. It's the best way I can explain it.

I've tried a 16GB and 64GB Sandisk Memory card in the LG G3 and I can write to the cards using the built in manager, but unable to do so using a 3rd party file manager like ES File Explorer or HD File Manager. The apps work direct to the internal SD Card so would expect to be able to use to external card as well
anyone else having similar issues as don't want to have to transfer files over wifi using ES to internal card then over to external card using the built in app
At the moment I am not aware of any third party file manipulation app, that can write to extSd ?

it is an issue of kitkat try downloading an app called sdfix it did the job for me(root required)
Either you root and USe SDFix, or use the Standard-Filemanager preinstalled on your phone or ES Filemanager from Playstore (I think it's the only 3rd party app that can write on external sd card under KitKat).
As it was mentioned before, it's an android "feature" and not a bug!
HAS to be ROOTED!

My phone is detecting my external san disk memory card but the contents of the card are not visible. It says there are no files but it is actually full of files. If I move a file from internal t o the external sdcard that file only is visible in the gallery but it is not visible in the file manager. I am using root explorer. I am not rooted. Please help.

Try the stock android browser. It might be the KK sd card problem popping its head up.
The only way to fix that is to root and run KK sd car fix from playstore...
