[Q] Best Jelly bean Rom For battery Life - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm wondering what ROM people have found to be best for battery life? I'm hoping to find something close to the stock Jelly Bean. I currently get about 6-8 hours on a charge and really need my phone to last me at least 12 hours. I'm not doing anything major just some email and texts maybe a short phone call.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You should be getting closer to 13 hrs
The stock rom is fine
Its your settings causing this
Keep wifi gps off #1
Brightness down
Turn sync off in settings
Manually push for your data
Use power saving mode
Set screen timeout to 15 or 30 seconds
Iff rooted govern the cpu down some
With rom tool box app
Not to many others have bad battery life
Good luck

My answer: switch to aosp. Though make sure you're not syncing unneeded crap, and brightness also affects battery life.

Are you connected to a 4G LTE network alot? I am running GOODNESS JB and I can usually get about 2 days worth if I'm not on 4G. If I am constantly connected to 4G I maybe able to get 6 hours of battery life.

My Gps was already off, I will try some of the other things you suggested, I don't see sync in the settings. I will also turn of the wifi when I'm not using it.

Its been awhile since I looked but the festure to turn sync on and off through account /settings is now crammed deep into ics and jb somewhere
It used to be right under settings accounts and sync when USING GB
Its all trial and error
Adjust adjust adjust , main thing is keep off or down on BRIGHTNESS AND GPS AND WIFI AND SYNC

have u got spare parts? open it up and look at battery history and the running vs screen on time.
they should be the same but i can almost guarantee that your phone is still running whilst the screen is off. you need to find out the app which is keeping a wakelock on ur device and delete/change its settings
Ok thanx..will try this

Sorry for the noobish question, but can I compare the two. I went to spare parts and could not see where to compare screen on time vs running.
I recently tried to calibrate y battery, but sinse my screen does not shut off on its own as before. I've aleady checked the screen timers and all is as it was before.
Right now I am @ 4.5 hrs since I unplugged and I am sitting @ 76%, with little use...kinda sucks!!!!

What kinds of widgets do you have running in the background and how often are they pulling data?
Also, how many days have you been on CM 6.1? I upgraded from RC3 and my battery life is much improved. The first two days it was eating a lot as it 'calibrated' itself but now I can easily make it through a full days use with about 40% to spare.
I adjusted my background widgets and how often they pulled data and this really helped my battery life. Also, a poor signal can have VERY ADVERSE affects on battery life. For example, I work in a prison where cell phone reception is awful. If I am at work for 3 hours and leave the phone in 3G mode, I can easily go through 30% battery while the phone tries to find a signal...
Any idea how long will it take the batt tocalibrate???? I did the recalibration process on thurday night, and my battery sucks now.
I'm sitting on 49% only 4 hours unplugged. Before I was getting somewhere around 55-60% at this time interval...
Any ideas?

Alright boys try this. I got over 2 days worth of lifetime with this set up.
-Download SetCPU
Set your profile to 245/245 screen off with priority at 100%.
-Turn brightness to 0%
-Turn GPS off (Go to Settings->Location and Security-> turn off all that GPS crap
-Leave 3G off until you actually need it, then turn it back off after you're done with it
-Leave bluetooth off
-Don't have garbage widgets lying all over the place on 7 homescreens. I only have like 5 widgets spread out on 2 homescreens.
Are you guys running CM 6.1? Cause I am.
Did you guys overclock?
Thank me if it worked out for you =P

Convolution Thanks for the reply, but im more interested in getting a few more hours but with certain level of freedom. I am not all that interested in switching things on and off every time I need them, but I understand what you mean.
I'm looking to get 16 hours of moderate use...that should be plenty. I currently turn off wi-fi and gps since I seldom use gs, and wifi is governed by a profile manager, and it's on only at night.
but setting connection down to 2G, and killing all screen brightness renders the device (IMHO) useless. Also, SetCPU @245 100%, would really hinder the device.
I am running CM6.1 Stable and I am running OC'd @ 1497, but on "On Demand" profile, so to use only as needed.
I still have to try Pershoot's kernel, I think I will flash it tonight to see what happens.
I am also experiencing some oddity with my screen time-out feature...it's not working.....my screen refuses to turn off by itself, I have to lock the device physically for it to take effect....not sure what changed...but the regular parameters are set properly.
I'm getting 2-3 days with the stock WWE ROM that came with the phone. Brightness is set to Auto, but I keep GPS, BT, WiFi and mobile data connection off until I need them. Other than that, I talk about 20-40 mins/day, send out a few texts, listen to the radio, read my feeds and e-mail - pretty much everything the phone was made for.
IMHO, the "calibration" is bullcrap, it's just an impression that it lasts longer afterwards.

Basically the same setup I have in terms of connectivity except for data.....does it really have that much impact on battery life?
What would I missing if I decide to turn data off?
Thanks!
Huge impact. Try it out for a day or two. Or just install Juice Defender, which disables it while the screen is off, turning it on at set intervals (like for 1 min every half hour) to let it sync.
Thanks Keinengel....I'll look up Juice Defender...sounds like the right thing!
i get atleast a day and a half out of my phone and i had it for about a week now. best battery ive had for a while now.
Wow guys...installed juice defender and pershoot's kernel, and only gone 1% in about 2.5 hour....I'll report again tomorrow

Battery life, not so great

Well, I thought the battery life on my T989D (Canadian version) would be better after installing a ROM (Darkside EVO3, Venom ROM) but after about an hour of usage (phone calls, texting, no video, no WiFi, no GPS).
I replaced it with a new battery and still it's bad.
Could it be a defective unit?
Ideas anyone?
Thanks

Or do I do it in recovery?

Is this your first flash? Ive have flashed plenty of times, battery life, no matter what ROM, cannot be judged the first, second or third day of usage. Give it five days, and report back. When I used darkside, I was getting 30 hours, with moderate use. Give it time, use your battery till it dies, and charge it fully while off. You will see a difference.
On my fourth day, but I just had to reinstall the ROM..
Now I'm using my carriers ROM, done by Derek Jay.
Hopefully it had something to do with it, not sure.
But I have read that ics and the t989 were having problems.

Koooba, i just posted in another thread about battery issues, check it out here. I been running Derek's Roms since Digital Warfare and never any really issues with his Rom. i would suggest to calibrate the battery, turn off sync on all apps (Facebook is one of the worst) and keep brightness down to a 20% or whatever is comfortable for you. No joke, i get 17 hrs avg on his roms. People been known to get 24hrs+ on his roms and those are the TMo version...Telus is suppose to have be even better.

one of the ways these guys are getting such good battery life is by turning off data. that's a huge one.
btw - i'm on a D as well, and I get consistently just under 3 hours screen on time, and i charge every night. usually end with about 15% left.
it could be due to the horrible signal in some of my university buildings... or the fact that i just leave wifi on all day. but I haven't really been able to crack that barrier.
it will always take about a week for your kernel and phone to settle down.

Most battery drains are from apps constantly running in the background. Use better battery stats and gsam battery monitor and I guarantee after a day of usage, you will track down what is killing it. Widgets, auto syncing of apps and Google are the biggest culprits of battery drain.

Well, after installing GSAM and checking off the option to prolong battery life in the default settings, the battery is a bit better, but not great.
When you turn off data, do you guys turn off ALL data?
Because I have every possible option off...
syncing, GPS, bluetooth, the only data I have on is the basic network data I would think I need to receive text msgs.

Yeah I got all that off when I don't use it. If I get no signal, I put it on airplane mode. I found even if you turn off data and you are in a building with poor signal or none it kills it, even with data off. Do you use any third party apps for text, phone or anything. What launcher do you use? Facebook on manual sync, emails too?
What does app sucker say is draining?

That's crazy then, because I'm LUCKY if I can squeeze out 5-6 hours and I turn off EVERYTHING.
I even frosted GTalk through Titanium, I don't have use Facebook, so I disable that app altogether.
Something definitely has to be wrong with my phone then.
I got the battery replaced for a new one, so dunno what's going on.
Just checked out your post, not sure what badass to governor setting is...?
I just installed the Venom Kernel over the Derek's Evo updated ROM.
All syncing is off, GPS is off as well.
Has to be an issue with my phone and ICS, because it originally came with Gingerbread.

[Q] Is this acceptable battery life?

So I unplugged the phone at 7am in the morning, its almost 12 hours since.
My Usage was browsing 20 mins, facebook 10 mins, 5-10 texts, few apps installation,5-10 emails,5 min instagram,10 minutes of calls, 5-10 minutes reading pulse,GPS on for 5-10 minutes
And general other things using the screen to look up contacts etc.
These are the screenshots below.
Im running everything stock jellybean 4.1.1,stock rom, stock kernel. Its rooted and installed flash apk.
Now i would like to know is this really light Usage?
For this usage,is the battery life good or can it be made better?
Thank you for your time!

I think the "Location" features in Google Now need some fine tuning. I believe Google Now requires that you have location updating turned on to work so I have opted to turn off Google Now to see if Google will make it more efficient in the future.

Maybe I've always had below average battery life, but if I'm on any rom and I get 12+ hours of it + around 3 hours of screen on time. I usually consider it average. But that's basically what I've got on any rom/kernel, even stock.
At least your Nexus has better battery life than mine!
I'm using stock JB JRO03C ROM with stock kernel + XXLF1 radio baseband and with 3 hours screen using will drain my Nexus's battery too quick...
I gonna buy extended battery for my GSM Nexus but it will not help really much, maybe I gonna test Jame Bond kernel for Jelly Bean if that gives better battery life to my Nexus..

Try reducing the display brightness, it's the biggest factor in battery-drainage for me.
The display is at quite a low level. Maybe I need to flash other Roms to get better battery life.
For example right now.
My phone has been unplugged for roughly 2 1/2 hours. And I'm down to 86% and the screen usage time is only 33 minutes.

try getting CPU spy and seeing if the phone is going into deep sleep, maybe you have an app that keeps it awake?

That roughly translates to 17 1/2 hours with 3 1/2 hours screen on time. Which is pretty average depending on what apps you use.
Could you provide more details like what apps/widgets you have with what sync settings you're using, email accounts, weather, etc?
Also, what variant of the Nexus are you using? GSM? Verizon? And are you using the stock battery or an extended?

Facebook is notorious for battery drain. Check the settings in Facebook and make sure to "uncheck" the location setting. Also, try to switch a couple email accounts to do "hourly" checks instead of push (unless you absolutely need them to be push). Also, try reducing the sync intervals on apps like Pulse and Twitter.
Considering you're using the stock battery the battery life seems on par with the usage your phone is getting even when not using the screen. Push, sync, and apps that use a lot of data transfer (like Dropbox) use significant battery.
I noticed the "Maps" application is using up a good amount of battery in your screenshots which means it's probably updating your location quite a bit and/or you use Navigation. Either way, that eats battery life as well. A lot of apps use location so it would be best to check those settings as well.
Also, depending on when you're using "2G", it could mean it is taking longer to pull data which might lead to battery drain.

Wifi drain or just normal?

Hi,
New to the note 2, not new to being a flashaholic. Being very tame atm and only using stock rom (rooted) with no Cwm.
Strangely I get about 10% drain overnight. Got better batt app but doesn't really show much except wifi is/was on.. And this audio_out_2.
Is that normal on stock rom? On the dhd it was more like 1-2% on experimental roms

Disable stuff manually or use Juice Defender Ultimate (3.9.6). I use JD and never turn anything of manually.
I do have sync on. I guess what people are trying to say it's pretty standard on stock rom and I'm in need of an awesome custom rom to flash?
I used jd ages ago but configuring is a bit of a pain.. I may try it again till awesome roms comes out.

Check you applications, I have 90 apps installed and only have 0.5-0.6% per hour while sleeping with sync on.
Tonight, for example, I left wild blood downloading the last 200 mb it needed.
It took like 5 minutes, then I woke up and I noticed that it kept the device awake for 6 hours even after finishing the download, Battery went for 50 to 43% in 6 hours..
Custom roms won't make a great difference.. Maybe removing some bloatware will do, but you can stay on stock imho.

Just a question, do you, by any chance, have SIM plugged in? I observed quite higher power drain (overnight) when I did not have SIM inside.
Yeah, I have sim in at all times.. Erm apps wise, I've not added any new ones before my upgrade so I guess if there is an issue it would be some bloat apps? I tried to freeze as many as I dare using tb. (well, I followed the script of apps to delete on the other thread).
What app did you used to find what apps drained x amount per hr? That seems like a clever one

Yeah, I have similar experiences. My phone drains around 10% overnight with no apps in the background and wifi off.
So what I'm doing and it seems that it has marginally helped is:
1. Turn off Sync
2. Turn off Notifications from Email accounts as these come in all the time even overnight and the notification process and the Blue LED will drain the battery
3. Decrease screen brightness to around 40%
4. Turn on wifi only when needed
5. Disable some of the apps I don't use (Chaton, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo news, S Suggest and Samsung Store, etc)
Now I get about of 1 1/2 day of regular use.
Think I found the culprit..
Has anyone got motion feature turned on? There's that sneak wake function ticked on mine as default, I switched that off and I only got 4% drain overnight.
Perhaps others may want to give this a go and see if it helps?

4-5% per night is what I see on my GT-N7100 (intl), with Wifi on, BT off, GPS off, NFC off, Sync on.
I got Motion on though, with following features: "Tilt to zoom", "Palm swipe to capture", "Palm touch to mute/pause". I am not sure which one is supposed to be "sneak wake" one .
But now, when thinking about it, I realize I do not need any of those, so I am going to turn Motion off completely to see if it has any impact.

CM 10.1 RC2 Might be the best rom out there right now

its finally stabalized with bluetooth working, it gets decent battery, great performance, great features, you can add wind kernel 2.0 RC1 to improve battery life if you want.
so far no bugs, haven't tried mhl yet it has never worked on CM for this phone as far as i know though so prob still down, will report back later when i get a chance to try it.
with the said setup above i'm getting roughly 3 hours of video playback on 200 brightness (with wind kernel) when the test is done i can post exact numbers
3h 13m on 200 brightness running video playback
the results are posted on page 46 of wind kernel thread.

It is incredibly stable too. I haven't had a crash, reboot, SoD or BSOD yet.
What is the best configuration kernel for this rom with wind 2.0rc1?
my phone is P936
Just stopping by to agree, since the RC2 release (I'm running nightly 5/11, day after RC2 release), my Bluetooth connections are working, my battery life is better and I haven't had to pull the battery to reset since.
ive had the odd random reboot now, not horrible though. the only other issue i'm getting is oddly high battery pull from WIFI but if i turn off wifi it's it's fine, i'm trying to figure out how to fix it now will report back, i can currently get 7-10 hours out of the phone with moderate use if i turn off wifi, i still think the battery can be better but it's workable for now.
the wifi issue worked itself out after some time, i'm getting 9-14 hours of use right now once i get a good setup i'll post it with some stats

I can tell you that on the 5/15 nightly and wind 2.0.1 I am getting that WiFi wake lock issue again. I reverted back to 5/14 and it went away.

im getting good battery life on 16/17 nightlies, yesterday i got 14 hours out of a battery and i even did a few extra things like 1 hour of gps navigation (had screen off) but it still used 25% of my battery (google maps said that in battery info)
anything over 12 hours i consider good.
There is a weird bug onde the CM kernel for RC2 that may prevent charging when the battery is depleted and the phone is off.
Installing the latest wind kernel fixes that problem

i actually learned about this today it happened to me, and it doesn't prevent charging, just the battery screen doesn't show up so you think its not charging, also you have to let it charge for 5-15 min then pull the battery, then power up the phone unplugged to get it to turn back on. i learned the hard way.
Maybe it was a coincidence and my battery just died, but I left the phone charging for 2h and the battery just didn't work.
I will check with another one to make sure
pull the battery, put the battery back in, plug it in for 15 minutes, then unplug, pull the battery again, put it back in, then boot ur phone and charge it while on.
it was probably already frozen when u left it charging, if the above doesn't work then u might have to look into more serious methods like trying other batteries or seeing if you can get into download mode to flash a new kdz and start from scratch (if u think the rom is causing it)
Can confirm good behavior of CM10.1 RC2 and Wind Kernel 2.0.1. BT is working.

it's been a long wait but finally working =D only thing im still waiting for is MHL vote on the bug fix if you want mhl to get fixed
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/CYAN-1101
The problem was the battery got to a very low voltage level, that it needed external charging, having it jolted from another source it started working again
