[Q] Has anyone got MTP working with Ubuntu 12.10? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So frustrating that USB disk mode has been removed by Google. Just downright disrespectful to then choose a protocol that is poorly supported on the very platform they are leveraging!
Anyway, end of rant Has anyone got MTP working on Ubuntu 12.10? I'm beating my head against it with absolutely no success. mtp-detect finds my Note 2 and gives the IDs, but no matter what I put in the udev 99-android.rules it just won't connect.
I know there are alternatives like ftp server, DroidSSH and Samba server, but these are really slow - typically 1.2MB/sec, which is just too slow for video files.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Enable UMS mode
I know this has been posted elsewhere, but took me ages to find it so I'm sure others will have not seen it either.
This enables UMS mode for the SGS 3. However, it also works great on my N7105. End of my MTP worries!

Use 51 instead of 99

Just use 51-android.rules instead
PS
mtp-detect will be Very slow

Believe me, I've tried it. Absolutely nothing will get this working with Ubuntu 12.10. I haven't seen anyone get this to work.
The above UMS mode switch solves the problem anyway.

Great! Thanks for that. I'll give it a go.

Theoretically it shouldn't work cuz it is related to mounting. Note 2 doesn't mount. It enables file transfer through mtp and usb debugging.
Mtp+usb debugging not equal to mounting.

Whats the name of the app that makes a PDA a 'mass storage device'??

Hey folks.. sorry for the laziness..
I remember there's an app we can use with our HTC devices that allows 'em to be plugged into a PC and be seen as a USB device / mass storage - instead of having to use active sync all the time.
What's the name of the app and does it work safely on my Orbit?
Thank you in advance!
Dood.
Hey Dood,
one app that can do this is "WM5Torage" . Works pretty good for me ...

Thank you ST001! I'll check it out. Much appreciated.
You can try also softick card export
http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
Which of the two is recommended? I'm leaning toward the second one, as the description with ref to accessing drivers appears to suggest it is more stable.
Getting My Xda to be seen by Ubuntu
Is there anything out there that can make my Orbit be seen by Ubuntu as a storage device or such like ? I know theres nothing to get it to sync with anything on Ubuntu but maybe there is something that can get the phone to be seen so i can transfer MP3s and such across ?
WM5torage worked fine on my XDA II
WM5torage worked fine on my XDA. However "Card export" didn't work at all.
I had problems as I have a lot installed to my card and when you activate teh software it unmounts it from the device. So while you can access it on the PC the device can no longer see the card. So for me push email would have a problem as it used it for storage, apps wont run etc.

Oh.. Thank you Stylez. I'm aware that I sure as hell should have used the search function to make things easier for the moderators, and I'm sorry that I was unable to overcome my haste. Please understand that I felt this was very urgent because none of my phones (Omnia; Wing; Dash) were picking up the computer's connection, and I didn't think the problem was my computer. I did a complete system restore, so that might have been the culprit. Anyway, things are working perfectly now, and I've finally been able to try the new Windows Live! Thank you guys. I'm glad i can always get good help here.

[Q] Control HTC Evo through Computer

Hey recently ive decided that I want to replace my stereo in my car with a mac mini and an external tough screen. I first thought I would try to use the HDMI feature of the Evo to view my phone on the screen, but I would want it to be interactive on the screen. So then I decided I should find a program that will allow me to use my Evo through a usb cord so the Evo displays on in a window on my mac or windows pc and i can interact with it from there. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work? Or does anyone wanna take on this project?
There is a thread on this topic in Q&A. I saw it maybe 2 days ago. Has a few suggested apps to control your evo via pc or vice versa.

hahaha i know. but those run through the web and i cant share the same connection if im creating the wifi form my phone.
and the ones that i found that go through usb, which is 1, refreshes and 4 frames a second =/
you could wire up a wifi router..
Here's the thread he was talking about: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971209
Anyway...
I used this: Droid VNC Server (FREE, requires root)
And this: VNC® Viewer Free Edition 4.1 for Windows (also free)
It's pretty choppy, but it works.
If you don't have Windows, pretty much any VNC viewer will work, there's lots of them out there (Google it).
Appreciate it. And yea. The last two days I've been doing research and trying out different ones, and everything had been laggy or choppy. I made this hoping to find a hidden gem that worked perfectly or someone that knew how to get it working flawlessly

Try mymobiler, it works perfectly for me. Just go google "mymobiler", it is the first result comes up.
Google android screencast, as long as your phone can be detected by adb it works great!

For you linux users out there.

Nothing we didn't know but. I was so dissapointed I wrote samsung to tell them UNACCEPTABLE. As I'm sure you know . Samsungs mtp mass storage doesn't interface with linux. I was reading some fixes and I atleast got the drives to mount from the phone installing MTP libs but any transfer too or from results in error. So I just wanted to share samsungs response. Basically.... " Sorry pal . we doubt were ever going to fix this . Pound sand "
"Dear Joseph,
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you can't connect your Samsung phone in a computer running with Linux Operating System. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused you.
Samsung doesn't have a configurable option to connect a Samsung Device to a Linux computer. The process for the mass storage settings is tested to work only with Microsoft Windows and Macintosh computer. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may present.
We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Thank you again for your comments, understanding and patience.
Do you have more questions regarding your Samsung Mobile Phone? For 24 hour information and assistance, we offer our new FAQ/ARS System - Automated Response System at http://www.samsung.com/support. It's like having your very own personal Samsung Technician at your fingertips.

Found and installed filezilla but the swiFTP Isnt compatible with my note play says
Sorry, I can't even find it on the play store. I just restored it from a TB I had on my GNEX.
Try searching XDA for an official apk of swiFTP or try another ftp app on the play store. I saw a couple highly rated ones that are free.
there is a solution for mass storage its on http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-mount-android-40-ubuntu-go-mtpfs.html have not tested it yet though.I am using airdroid and chromium since I need stable ac power while sharing the data connection.the issiue is because of Android, but samsung could have been done something I agree

[Q] Windows 8 deactivates when using Samsung drivers

OK. I searched and searched....maybe my searching skill sucks. If you can point me to threads that show some possible solutions, thank you.
Do we just wait for Samsung/Microsoft to fix this or has the XDA community found a solution?
Problem:
Install latest Samsung drivers for Galaxy S3 from samsung.com. Works first time, you can copy files to and from. Second time you plug your phone in, Windows 8 deactivates. Unplug your phone, Windows 8 is activated.
I found this thread on MS website:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...g-galaxy/fa47bd42-9866-4cc7-9611-f01c7de7702d
If I remember right I believed I have read that this is a common bug they are working on fixing. I have not seen any fix info though

This worked. Those drivers that are listed in the thread are a different version (1.5.18) compared to Samsung's (1.5.14).
Working as intended now.
Thank you so much!!!
