I thought the 4.1.2 update was supposed to give the ability to rotate the homescreen?
I have 4.2 and I can't rotate it 90 degrees or 180.

Afaik, rotating the stock homescreen is a feature offered by custom ROMs only.
I believe this only applies to it running on the nexus 7. There is an ultimate rotation control app you can buy to do it with the stock launcher or you can use nova launcher to do it on the gnex.
Well the functionality has always been there but they won't ever activate it on a phone, as it makes no sense whatsoever. the update did however activate it on the nexus 7.
Edit
build.prop
And add this line at the bottom.
launcher.force_enable_rotation=true
And just restart your phone.

This doesn't work on stock 4.2 anymore.

Can someone please point me to a ROM or mod that enables a stable, usable Tablet mode on my verizon galaxy nexus?
I know that I can change my dpi to 160 but I always get that system.ui crash.

Stick with 241 and you will be good to go. If you use something like NovaLauncher you can essentially get a nice tablet like UI going.

SystemUI crashes because you have navigation bar enabled (which tablets don't have). You can modify your framework-res.apk to hide the navigation bar (thread HERE) and use something like LMT launcher or button savior to get home/back/etc. keys. Then it won't crash anymore. I've done this and it works fine. If you are on the 4.0.4 verizon ROM, you can find the modified framework in the thread HERE (and you can find simple instructions to do it yourself) or flashable HERE.
Alternatively, I've read (but not tested) that adding the following to your build.prop will stop it from crashing at 160 dpi.
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

I have the Kang ROM with the latest Nova launcher. What settings do I need to enable to make it tablet-like?

Yes, I have that but it must be used with the right ROM in order to fully function like a tablet (landscape mode)

Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant then. I am running the 4.0.4 ROM with Franco's kernel and have Nova Launcher has my default. I have my LCD Density switched to 241 and can auto-rotate into landscape mode as well. Hope this helps.

How would I get my menu buttons (back, home, open apps) menu on the bottom in tablet (landscape) mode?
They seem to always be stacked horizontally on the right side while I am in landscape mode. I want them to be on the bottom (just like on a tablet).
This is what I want

I gave you your answer. Read my previous post. You just need to hide the navigation bar. I messed around with it on my phone running verizon 4.0.4 by just making the required change to framework-res.apk and changing the screen density to 160 dpi. It's simple and you don't need to be a 'developer'. You ask for help, but don't give any specifics on what ROM version you have. I linked you to 4.0.4 version. If you're not using that verizon ROM, post your framework-res.apk and I'll mod it for you. It literally takes about 2 minutes to do (counting the time to upload it as an attachment here).

Thanks. I thought I mentioned earlier that I am on AOKP 25 (actually I just upgraded to 27 to see if it helped).
I'll give that a shot.

I'm pretty sure aokp has the ability to hide the navigation bar already. Look through the settings. Hide it and then switch to 160 dpi.

Looks like AOKP 27 is on 4.0.3.
I took the framework-res.apk from there and here is a link to it.

I was doing the wrong option...
dumb me...
Thanks for all the help.
I finally got it working on my own.
One thing that remains and it's a biggie. I can't make or receive calls. The phone app crashes every time.
I did a lot of google searches and all the other devs are stuck at the same point.
However, I did find one dev in the Galaxy Note forums that made a ROM that supposedly works in tablet mode.
Any ideas?

Yeah unfortunately I haven't seen anything yet that forces the buttons onto the bottom. The likely reason for this is that the buttons would take up .25-.5 inch of screen real estate in landscape which would not be desirable at all.
I got it to work.
Here is what I had to do.
- Hide the nav bar using AOKP (builds 25 - 27 work)
- Change my dpi to 192 or less
-- This brought out the tablet interface (menu buttons on lower left). Notifications and time on the lower right etc
- Phone app would keep on crashing and I was unable to make or receive calls
-- Fixed this by downloading AOKP build 27 phone.apk for the HTC Incredible and replaced the phone.apk on my nexus. The reason why the phone app would crash was because of the dpi, so I had to find a lower dpi phone.apk.
Was then able to use all the basic functions of my phone including the market. However, the entire thing seemed a unstable (would have rom manager or systemUI crash randomly).
I'm giving it up for now. Hopefully some dev will see the value in getting this working and create a complete ICS rom for it.

Yes, I confirm that adding "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" to build.prop works as well.
I figured out that 180 dpi is the lowest you can go and not have the phone app crash. The launcher lags when running landscape though.

You can replace the phone.apk with one from another device send have it working. I don't remember which device, but I read it in the tablet rom thread in the CDMA galaxy development forums at rootzwiki.

I don't understand why if i disable screen rotation no apps (ie gogle maps) will rotate!!! Is it possible to have the screen rotation in the apps and not in the home screen?? Is it a bug in 4.2?? Before the upgrade my home screen did not rotate but the apps did. >Why now is different?
Thank you
If you turn auto rotation off, then you won't see auto rotation(obviously)... That is supposed to happen, and always have(that is what that setting is for).
Your homescreen, however, is not supposed to rotate at all, and if it does, I'd have to ask you, whether you are actually running the stock rom or some custom rom, and whether, you are using a different launcher? All of these things could course your homescreen to rotate(on purpose obviously).

Actually I'm using a custom ROM and no launchers but it's almost like a stock, it's the Rigel R6. Sorry but the screen rotation added to the 4.2 what is supposed to do? Before 4.2 there was no screen rotation but the apps were rotating.. now there is the screen rotation and also the Home screen rotate
What is the "stock behavior" of the screen rotation???
Thank you so much!!

there is absolutely no change in screen rotation pattern in 4.2 as far as Galaxy Nexus is concerned.
4.2 only brought changes in screen rotation for tablets. Phones have exactly same behavior as they had in 4.1.2

Yea then it is definitely your rom... This has nothing to do with android as such.
Also it seems like you are confusing a couple of things, but anyway nothing changed in the screen rotation behaviour. Meaning that you will have to ask in the ROM thread if there is a setting specifically for homescreen rotation, and otherwise you will just have to use another rom.

I'm a fan of the new 4.2 quick access to settings, or better yet the toggle implementation as found in Cataclysm. However in firmly in the camp of despising the new lock screen even enough to revert back to my favorite 4.1 rom. Any chance the old 4.1 could be ported to the new? Asking for purely selfish reasons to the talented developer community.

But does that give you the quick shortcut to the camera by swiping left or is the only option to swipe right and unlock the phone as I would imagine the 4.2 lock would function without any widgets? Cheers

It disables the new features. No left or right screen. Just plain unlock screen. But no right camera quick shortcut button.

I just did root, and rotation used the Ultimate Rotation Control otherwise did not do anything in the UI. I am using the original Optimus UI.

The stock launcher does not support rotation, it is also why the screen will not rotate without third party software (like Ultimate Rotation Control).
So Ultimate Rotation Control is why everything looks messed up.
THX for the answer
Yes, I know about the locked rotation, but the rom 4.1.2 (if I remember correctly) functioned normally also used in my S2 and was normal, some form of APP by correction or something that can be done.
