T-Mobile GS3 compatible with 4G LTE? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

My friend is getting a T-Mobile S3 soon. He asked me this question and I told him I highly doubt it's compatible but I'm not 100% sure.
His question was when or if T-Mobile rolls out LTE, will the GS3 (HSPA+) be able to run LTE? He said he thought a software update could possibly make it work?
Isn't this more of a hardware thing than a simple software change?

T-Mobile (UK) are offering an LTE compatible version as well as the original GS3 - they are different models and the standard GS3 does not have the necessary internal hardware to support 4G when it is rolled out.

Dude. Already two other threads plus more related to this.

SPRINT or VERIZON?

There is a new sub-forum specifically for Sprint phones. Please make sure you are in the right forum when you grab your ROMs. And make sure when you post in other sub-forums you specify if you are posting about a Sprint or Verizon device. Thanks all! Enjoy!
thanks.. would it make sense to have a sprint "general " section too or no?

No. Unless its development related, 95% of discussions are relevant to Verizon, Sprint, and GSM customers.
Is there really enough difference between the two to have two different dev sections? Are they not both the 4G LTE model?

If you flash Verizon ROMs on Sprint, you lose data. Same with flashing Sprint on Verizon. There's enough differentiation to warrant separate dev sections.
this is the same way they did for the nexus s works fine,

Thanks. I don't have one either. My upgrade is in July.
Note: You may have to clear data in your XDA app to see the Sprint Development sub-forum.

Didn't say there was anything wrong with it, was more so interested in the details of the requirement.
Verizon. I would have gone with Sprint, but the release took too long, and their LTE isnt in UT yet. Soon as it is, Ill go back to them for unlimited data
If I didn't have the grandfathered unlimited 3G/LTE plan, then I probably would have jumped ship to Sprint. Verizon's 3G speeds are pretty slow, but from what I've heard, Sprint's is even worse. Once Sprint gets their LTE fully running, it'll probably be good to switch to them, but that probably won't happen until 2013 or 2014.
It's your call. Verizon for now, Sprint later. IMHO.
This was not a question to be answered here. It was a question to ask yourself before flashing the wrong ROM and losing your radios.

Tmobile Galaxy s3 LTE

I have a tmobile galaxy s3 and I'm currently using it on the wind network. I wanted to switch to a canadian provider named fido which uses the same network as rogers. I looked everywhere but cant find a straight answer. I wanted to know whether LTE will work on FIDO and if i have to do some kind of mod or would it just work from the start.
Here we go again lol

the point is YOU NEED TO SEARCH there are a million threads about this in the "General" section of the T-Mobile, Wind, Mobilicity, Videotron Samsung Galaxy S III...
The short answer is no. The T-Mo version doesnt have the proper chip to support LTE. And as stated by DocHoliday, the T-Mobile Galaxy S III was never tested with the FCC for LTE compatibility.
You would know this if you searched......
Short answer is no, long answer is maybe. A Google search would have found other threads on the subject

I did search but i didn't get complete answers. Some were no, some yes, and some maybe. I wanted to make sure before i spend money switching to a more expensive plan then finding out it doesn't work. Im still confused if it will work, because some people are claiming Tmobile representatives and Samsung have said it is LTE capable.
No, it won't work. If the hardware is there it is not enabled, and would probably take some serious dev work to enable it, which I don't think is a priority for any of our devs at the moment

I was hoping otherwise. I just got off the phone with Fido and they told me it will work, are they just bull****ting? Also I was reading in a post i wont have LTE but i will have close to LTE speeds, is there any truth in that?

If you did the research, you know as much as anyone else does. Nobody is magically going to come out of somewhere and give you the answer. If this was a simple answer, it would have been answered and verified. Anyone out there saying "it might work" or "it should work" or "it could work" is just going off of technical documents and little else. Yes it could, but it could also be permanently and irreversibly disabled via software, or other hardware means.

Short answer, no. If you want to base your decision on someone working customer support at Fido, then by all means, get the phone and hope away that you'll get LTE
I would really look to base your decision on what you know and what works today. The phone is HSPA+ 42 compatible, not sure of what the Fido network supports. Today this is often times very competitive with even the latest LTE networks, and is more than enough for any smartphone today.
Good grief.
Sir, please use the Search function, but it seems you may have gotten your answer. Thank You & Thread Closed.

[Q] pageplus

Hi,
I just bought a samsung galaxy nexus i515 verizon 4G LTE cell phone. I came to know that 4G phone does not work with page plus without programming/hacking(?) . Is it possible to make this cell work with pageplus? I do not need 4g or 3g . Just talk and text is fine.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Paras.
Is pageplus GSM? If so then for sure no. If pageplus is CDMA then still no, at least I haven't heard of one CDMA phone being used on another CDMA carrier. To my knowledge the only carrier VZW phones can be used on is VZW, except for the few VZW "global" phones that also support GSM.

Well pageplus is CDMA and uses VZW network. But when I called them they said 4G phones do not work and needs some programming to make it work on their 3G network. I am not sure what do I do.
Paras.
Oh I see. Very interesting, but over my head. I will keep this thread subscribed.:good:
They didn't offer any other info or leads as to how to go about doing this? How do they program other phones to their network? Seems like the LTE would only make it easier to activate, unless they do not have any LTE towers in place.

Tmobile note 2 on AT&T?

My wife and I are considering taking our tmobile phones over to AT&T. There both unlocked... Note 2 & sg3. Question I have is would I have to flash AT&T modems and roms to be able to fully utilize the new network? Just don't want to end up with bricks. AT&T already told me both devices unlocked will work fine on the network.
Wat I'm asking is if I can utilize the lte on the t-889 if I put it on AT&T? I found a bunch of threads with mixed responses.

It should work fine but the only problem is you wont have LTE

Why's that? AT&T says I will be able to use lte since my area has it. If not I probably won't do this. As I've said I've read mixed responses. Could I flash AT&T radios to utilize it?
It will give you weak service because att and t mobile run on different bands which is hardware related not software

I dunno about that as many said everything works but LTE. I have also read a few that says they have LTE enabled. That's what's confusing. I may go to AT&T tomorrow and have them test a sim before I decide to switch. I assume if I change to AT&T apn ill get better 4g speed at least. The limitation your speaking to its a locked radio for the t-889 that prevents LTE from being enabled currently.
I can't quickly tell, but if it has LTE support on band 17 (700MHz) then it will work. It's a T-Mobile phone so it has support on band 4 which AT&T only uses for a very small part of its LTE network.
Like you said the radio it comes with might be locked to not allow LTE. If you can flash an AT&T radio without issue then you'd be able to see if it works.
If I were to guess I'd say it would have the right band since it's basically the same phone that AT&T sells.
Does it at least get hspa+ and 3G? I can wait for lte.

The AT&T rep you spoke to definitely isnt informed on the hardware issue.
If you are switching over you should just sell those two phones you have and just buy new ones since its new activation Im sure you can get a good price on the phones

From what I understand its not hardware, it's because of a radio limitation currently. Lte isn't enabled yet on the t-889. That's why I asked if I could flash a AT&T radio. As long as I get 4g and 3G ill switch. The whole point was to save $$ on buying new devices.

[Q] Sprint LG G2 ... Why?

Why did Sprint take out the required software for the phone to be and to pick up LTE with the other carriers?
Because they don't want you to. Actually, there's only one phonr that has world LTE. The new oppo. Coincidentally, no US carrier sells it.

But you can use both T-Mobile and ATT and pick each others LTE and with the Verizon you can use Paranoid Android or T Mobile ROM and it'll pick the LTE ... So why not Sprint?
Sprint has a unique triband LTE now also. Though since it didn't ship with that active I don't know if that's responsible....

I think they didn't offer the same bans as the other variant phones.
You already answered the question yourself. With Verizon phone, you can use PA to get access to T-Mobile LTE. Which means one of two things. Either 1> You can use PA on Sprint to get access to T-Mobile LTE, or 2> It isn't a software issue, it's a hardware issue. I'll let you guess which it is.

I haven't tried PA with the Sprint because I read that it still won't work. I read something like the bans are not present .. my question is why in the other carries they are but not Sprint.

Different hardware. Just like Verizon has the wireless charging ability. AT&T has an extra noise canceling mic. Sprint has the ability for tri-band LTE.

That sucks especially when their 4G was a failed and LET is way behind schedule and now they trying to introduce a better network. LoL it's like they try to keep you with the hope of getting better. Oh well thanks guy, I just did not know if it was a specific reason for it.
