Hi all!
I just got my new Defy earlier today from amazon.co.uk and I've got a question regarding the phone, sorry if I've asked something that has already been answered (didn't find a answer through the search).
The defy just simply doesn't seem to charge, when I use a USB-cable from the computer nothing happens at all. So I try a USB-charger which is connected to the wall and then via a micro USB-cable to the handset. This makes the phone go into a "charging-mode" showing a big battery with a flash on it. The percentage of battery quickly rises from 0% to 60% (in about 30 sec) and then stays there. Now I've tried to charge it for ~3h but if I then start the phone and enter the pin-code and then chose my prefered language for doing the initial setup it shuts down.
The phone then starts to load and does the same procedure of jumping from 0% of battery to 60%. The green "liquid" in the battery during "charging mode" is moving which in my mind should indicate that the phone is charging, but it doesn't seem to work.
If I unplug the charger the phone dies instantly.
When I plug the charger in the phone a small white led flashes quickly and then it's black again.
Should I just let it charge for like 10+ hours and hope for the best? Or are there any other possible solutions out there?
Just to clarify, I haven't rooted it or whatever, I haven't managed to get it to start even once.

I think you have used accessories other than Motorola. Usually this happened to me when I used apple charger converter with a motorola cable.
If that is not true, its better to return the product since amazon has a 100% cash back replacement warranty. They can also send you a brand new phone later.
Ye, the charger I am using is a Sony Ericsson micro USB charger with the motorola cable. I'm situated in sweden, so the contact (english) from motorola doesn't work here.
Could it really be that since the usb-chargers shouldn't really vary that much? I checked it and the output from the chargers (the one to the wall) are the same apart from the sony ericsson's has 0.1 less V (DC).
I guess I could try and hit the stores tomorrow and buy a socket adaptor so I could use the charger motorola intended for usage in england.
As a last alternative plug your cable to a pc and leave it for 1hr. If it charges, then phone will power up on its own. Use cable that came in box with phone.

major letdown this morning.
I had the phone be charged over the night and it all looked neat this morning with the battery indicator saying a 100%. THough when I unplug the phone from the charger it shuts down and wont start again. It starts charging from 0% again if I reconnect the charger.
Now I've got two possible explanations.
Either I've received a faulty battery or I'm just plained stupid and have missed something when puting the phone together, theres some kind of plastic protection on the battery which I'm supposed to remove before inserting it?
If the latter I'll go hide somewhere, cause I can't see any atm.
You can charge the phone on USB through the computer only after you've installed the driver package from Motorola on your computer. I noticed that too.
I bought a T-mobile phone on eBay, unlocked it, and just downloaded the software package from Motorola's US website. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll dig up the link!
I've installed the motorola media link and the drivers from
http : //www .motorola. com/Support/US-EN/Support-Homepage/Software_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
But the phone just wont react when trying to charge it, other then a small light flash up in the left corner.
I've emailed both amazon and motorola support, awaiting further instructions from them on how to proceed before I try anything else. Of course this happens on a weekend when the support is out partying -.-
Thanks for all the help btw.
I guess I'm looking forward to a month (atleast) of sending phones back and forth.
I know this is all basic stuff you've probably already tried:
1) The correct wall charger (not sure if this is an enhanced micro usb, but some manufacturers wire them differently).
2) Pull the battery and let the phone sit a bit.
3) Using the correct usb cable to computer, experiment with different usb ports on the computer (this alone saved my wife the trouble of taking her phone back). Make sure you're plugged directly, not through a hub.
4) Does the phone actually run normally while on power (plugged in)? Not sure, but can you do a factory reset on this phone with it plugged in?
5) Have you tried charging on airplane mode?
Same happened to me.
I charge the phone about 20 hours, both by wall charger and USB, and couldn't charge it up to 100% only 70%. (motorola charger)
Nothing helped, so I returned the phone to the seller, and they gave me a new one - it's charging perfectly.
I just got my phone yesterday, and the Samsung charger was working fine until this afternoon when I noticed that the battery was going down even though it was plugged in. I tried different usb chords and different wall sockets, but nothing worked until I switched to my old HTC Dinc charging adapter.
However, now it will only charge for 30 seconds. It will only continue to charge if it's connected to my computer.
I have the GT-N7100 rooted with stock rom
Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
Edit: After some more testing I found that the charge light stays on if I plug it into the wall while it's turned off. While it's turned on it still only charges for 30 seconds though. Could that mean its a software issue rather than a hardware problem?
Edit 2: I just did a factory reset and the problem is still there, so I guess I will return it for another unless someone knows how to fix this.
Try a different cable first. I've had problems with mine, so same could be yours.

Did you use the charger and cable provided with the box?
Did you root the phone yourself, or was it already rooted when you bought it.
Seeing as you've bought it yesterday, and you're new here, my beliefs are you probably bought one pre-rooted, and as such, perhaps didn't come with all the official gear.
What does 1 post have to do with newness? A lot of people don't post unless something is really bad(charging for only 30 seconds) and just read.
OP sounds like you need to Odin back to complete stock, not just factory reset from phone.

The charger that came with the box seems to be dead. When I plug something into it nothing happens. It only worked on the day I got the phone.
I got the phone from newegg and rooted it myself. I'm not new here, this is just my first post. I don't usually post unless I have something to contribute, or I have a problem I can't solve on my own.
I flashed back to complete stock firmware (no root) and then did factory reset again, but the problem is still there.
I also noticed that even though it's charging when powered off, it only charges VERY slowly. maybe about 1% every 20 mins.
I can't really think of anything else to do for it, so I'm going to see I newegg will let me exchange it.

I see the Dinc charger is an 1A charger.
I had random charging issues when I used my 1A chargers from my Mytouch 4G.
Every now and then the screen would turn on and the charging would stop. Mostly happened at work for some reason.
I bought better (i.e. higher amperage) chargers and haven't had the problem since.

Thanks, I didn't know that. That's a good idea. I'll go get a new charger and hope that works.
This is why I use a wall battery charger and just swap out the batteries. My rezound had a charging if CWM was used as recovery. I 2nd or 3rd the full wipe and return to stock and start troubleshooting.
@ChodTheWacko
Thanks a lot man. I just got a new 2.1A charger and it seems to be working fine now.
My phone wasn't holding a charge so I got a new charger. The new charger still wouldn't work on my phone.
My dad has the exact same phone as me (Sprint instead of Verizon) and the new charger worked on his phone.
I thought it might be a battery problem so I got a new battery. Once the new battery (first charge) prompted me to plug it into the charger the charger wouldn't charge. My dad's battery works fine in my phone. I want to see if anyone else has experienced this problem with their rooted or if you think it's the actual phone itself?
When my phone is turned off the charging battery icon shows. I'm stumped.

Dude first of all, totally wrong section entirely.. there is a Q&A section for a reason. Might want to contact a mod to move this..
and secondly, probably not due to rooting the phone.. all it does is give you superuser access (similar to having superuser on linux or admin rights on windows) for your phone... i have never seen any case of this breaking the charging port lol

I would wipe everything in recovery...factory reset ...system ...cache and dalvik (have a backup first) and start flashing a new ROM and see if that helps....if it doesn't then its definitely the phone itself...good luck

ok more info
what rom kernel
type of battery
charger
Can you see the phone on the computer when it's booted and plugged in? If not, your USB port is probably shot. All the other symptoms point to this and it's unfortunately common.
Troll? Lol

Lets assume for a moment they aren't.
To test to see if it's not related to any root/rom/kernel issues. Turn the phone off and plug it in. If it doesn't show that it's charging, then it's physical, or you jsut have a bad combo. I have a charger that works on everything but my phone, and my phone's charger works on everything. Chargers can really be picky, I don't know why, but I can provide proof if needed.
I'm running JBSourcery v4.2.
Samsung battery - extended, 1850 mAh
Charger - iGo
When the phone is off it shows that it is being charged.
My computer hasn't ever recognized the phone when it's plugged into the ports.
So suddenly my note 2 running tweaked has started charging real slow then all off a sudden will not charge at all. Ive tried several chargers and now have noticed with or without the battery i can enter only download mode and it will show up on odin but not charge the battery. as soon as i try to restart instead of entering download mode it will try and start but just shut down. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas or has seen this issue? thanks. so considering it will enter odin is it possibly a battery issue, although it will only go into download mode nothing else? thanks again
The issue is not the ROM, I can tell you that much.
I would suggest flashing the stock kernel. If that does not help the issue, you need a new battery. 100% positive. I say that because you claim you have tried other chargers.
i cant check but can anyone else confirm the phone wont work without battery in with it plugged into laptop

It doesn't. You have to have the battery in, even when plugged into a wall charger.

awesome i am currently only 6500 miles from home in south korea.......seems like samsung is pretty popular here. lol everyone has a note2 here i swear. gonna find a battery and hopefully it solves the issue.
I'm having a sort of similar issue.
This is a brand new issue for me. I've been rooted running Jedi X-14 for about 2 months or so now. I went on vacation to Guatemala and that's when the issues started arising. I brought along the same charger I used here back in the states, and it worked fine the first day or two, then new things started happening. It started taking about 5-10 seconds for the Note to realize the charger was plugged in. Then when the charger was plugged in the bottom of the screen (actual touch screen) started becoming a bit unresponsive and laggy. The phone no longer charged as fast as it used to. Then sometimes I would plug it in, and it wouldn't actually charge...it would make the noise recognizing something has been plugged in, but would say "Please Connect charger". If the phone completely died this was almost a guarantee and I would need to plug/unplug/plug until the dead battery icon changed into the charging battery icon.
I'm back in the states now, haven't had a chance to reset/install a new rom or anything, and my phone earlier tonight went dead. Spent a good 2 minutes fiddling with it, it eventually turned on, said no charger was inserted, and turned off. Since then I have not been able to get it on. As soon as I plug it in it shows dead battery, and very rarely it will start to boot up the battery charging symbols (battery symbol with green bar moving), but even if it did, it would do it for 1-3 seconds and shut off.
I'm able to get into Recovery Mode/Download Mode, and the phone will actually stay on as long as it's on the charger (wall outlet).
It's not the battery, as I have another official Note 2 battery (at work currently, and I switched them the other day, to see if the other battery was the issue). Also I have different USB cords/chargers, and they all give the same issue.
From CWM Recovery I was able to wipe Cache/Factory reset the phone, but it still does not boot up. Any advice is appreciated. I can probably get it on when I get my other battery which is near fully charged at work, but I won't be at work for another 2 days or so, so I'm looking for a fix so I can have a working phone in the meantime. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I was able to charge the phone while in recovery mode to about 10%...It then turned on...after a few minutes however the charger just stopped charging the phone. Tried another charger same thing. Tried both chargers with an s3 I have, and they work perfectly fine. Even going back to recovery mode won't charge it anymore.
I was on vacation in Central America and the same thing happened to me. It works fine in the states now.

Maybe its the oversea power grid? If you are using just a wall converter (US to Wherever) and still using your american AC adapter, you have to realize the power grids arent as clean or as constant as they are here in the states and can actually ruin an AC charger. Can you charge it via your PC using the USB cable? I know the stock Kernel has a near trickle charge though but still, it might be enough to charge it for use.
Something to keep in mind, the S3 has a lower power draw than the note 2. The screen alone on the note2 can draw more than 600Mah which is more than a standard USB adapter can output. Thats not counting the draw on the battery from cpu frequency or radios.
Also I can also assure you that bad power grounds cause a touchscreen to act up. I have an iconia a500 that acts up in the same way with a generic charger, yet, with the stock charger it works fine. It has less power filtering in its charging circuitry. I still have ungrounded outlets in my house which cause the issue. Too much interference.
Just a guess as both you and ryan are experiencing similar issues and are both away from home.

I figured maybe my charger from the US I had brought to Guatemala had broken...when I got back to the States, I bought a Micro USB charger from one of those vending machines in the airport (says it's a 5V2 1A wall charger- 2.1A output)... Having tried different chargers, batteries and outlets, I can only assume it's something with the Hardware no? I was able to reset the phone, and installed Jedi Master 14 to replace Jedi X14, to see maybe if something with the ROM was faulty, and that didn't help.
Phone no longer charges in CWM Recovery like it did last night. Phone turns off, and has that dead battery symbol on the screen (empty battery with a loading circular icon on it). It will no longer go any further.
Tried charging thru my computer to the same effect... worst case scenario I have to do a warranty exchange, however I'd like to avoid it as I believe T-Mobile no longer offers the White Note 2 and I don't like the titanium colored one, I'd have to un-root/stock rom/Triangle Away, and then re-root new phone (I'm a complete N00b at this stuff so it's time consuming for me to do), and honestly I'd just to avoid it if at all possible.

Well, its tough to say without using a multimeter and checking a few points, but, a power spike could fry the charging circuit in the phone. Thats the worst case scenario. Only thing you could do if thats the case would be to get a second battery and external charger.

Luckily both can be gotten from eBay for under usd $20. Its probably worth checking asurion to see if they have white ones in Stock. You just have to weigh the cost of a warranty replacement the hassle of changing batteries every day.

I just experienced the same problem with my N2 over the weekend. Went to Bestbuy and got the $50 battery charger and extra battery (Check local availability) price matched to Amazon.com for $30 (with free shipping under more buying choices), brought it home to charge my completely wasted original battery and used the one in the box. Sure enough, it is the charging port. The new battery did the same thing as the old one, it showed it was being charged by the little lightning "icon" over the battery, but the battery was still draining. Although the lightning icon was there, there was no "bing-bing" tone (in the stock rom w/ root) to indicate the cable was ACTUALLY connected.
What is interesting is I think the battery icon shows up as "processing" if the USB pins are connected, but if just the +/- terminals are used in the cord (like the one that comes with the battery dock, not a MicroUSB cable -> USB port -> power adapter that comes with the phone, but power adapter -> MicroUSB) nothing registers on the phone even if it's completely powered down.
Called Tmo today and they are shipping a warranty replacement to me for free, I just have to wait for Ground shipping (didn't pay the $20 for "overnight"). Hopefully it'll come by next Wednesday, as I'm leaving on vacation then. With all this drama on the phone, I actually ended up ordering a Nokia 521 (give old WinMo a try again) from HSN over the weekend as a backup phone for $100. I felt like I was going to die not having a phone for 2 solid days.
Normally they send one out , then you return yours. The battery on this phone is phenomenal, so using an external battery charger and swapping them out would be viable while waiting for the new one to come in the mail id think.
Im hoping these phones dont get usb charging problems often. I might just mod mine to take wireless charging. My s2's microusb port died on me.

I'm actually quite disappointed that Tmo told Samsung to not wire up the wireless charging leads on this phone. I would be totally on-board for wireless charging a'la Nexus or my Touchpad. My Microusb connector wouldn't even see any use other than when to flash a rooted update.
I'm OK with a soldering iron, but I don't want to tear the thing apart to hook them up myself. Seems like it would be a great way to void the warranty, OR disable my Squaretrade warranty.
Just wanted to drop back by since I was about to send back my N2 to Tmo... I unrooted, triangle awayed and finally flashed "clean" firmware directly from Samsung via ODIN.... both batteries are now charging via both USB and Power adapter.
WTF
2 weeks ago i tried something stupid. I made a USB charger for my scooter from an old navigation charge brick for te car. without thinking i plugged in my phone and *poof* off. I thought it was strange because it has a limit of 5v and a fuse of 2a, so i thought it was within the safe area. I started my phone again, but when i wanted to charge it, it was really slow. (200 ~ 400ma). So i thought i fried my USB port, and ordered a new one. I replaced it but the charging problem still appeared. So i thought maybe its the battery, same story. ordered a new one but the problem was still there.
So i tried to re calibrate the battery by discharging it to 0 and let it fully charge while off. When the phone went of it didn't detect any charging and wouldn't boot. When i measured the voltage of the battery it discharged to 2.7V, i externally charged it to 3.2V and my phone booted again.
a friend advised me to return to the stock miui version and firmware version from when it came out of the box. So i did butt it didn't help me solve the problem. My phone think he is fast charging but the current is around 200 to 400ma and above 50 percent its at 50 to 120ma.
The last few days i am trying to find the schematics of the phone and especially the power circuit, i can find a few pictures, and there are a few sites that offer the schematics. But i cant seem to find out to download them from there.
Is there anyone who knows where i could find the right schamtics, or point me in a direction where the problem/defect is coming from?
Use original charger and cable?
Yes i did actually tried 5 different charges and 5 cables, a car charger, powerbank. I found the schematics yesterday and found out where the IC is located what may cause this problem. But i can only order it in china so i have to wait 2 3 weeks.
