What's a good upgrade from this phone? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I am debating whether to buy the Nexus 4 or the Note II. Yes I admire the huge screen, and really doesn't bother me. But at the same time, the Nexus has some features that the Note II can't simply offer. Things as important as updates straight from Google, from stupid little things like the notification lights. Which one should I decide?

Well, if you get the Nexus 4, it's almost the same price outright as the Note 2 is on contract. I recently switched to Straight Talk Wireless prepaid and am using the same T-Mobile network for only $45/month. So I think the deciding factor between the two phones is whether you want to stay on a contract for another two years, or explore other options.

Stagnated in improvements?? Both the Nexus 4 and Note 2 are amazing upgrades compared to this phone.
-Better, bigger 720p screens
-GPUs with more than twice the power of the adreno 220 (NFS Most Wanted plays SO smooth on the Note 2.)
-quad core CPUs that put this snapdragon s3 boat to shame with antutu scores of 12,000+
-2gb of ram
-MUCH better cameras
-The Note 2 has insane battery life
-and to top if off both ship with official Jelly Bean?
Stagnant? I don't even..

+1... I went from a 3.5" screen to this phone (SG II). At first I was like, wow the screen is way too big...Now I want a bigger screen Plus the note seems to have quite a few cool options. Just my $.02

Yea I'd spring for a Note 2 over the Nexus 4. I play with it everyday at work. We have a display with the Note 2 attached to the Moga controller. Man... ultimate emulator experience! Dude the battery life alone is to kill for. I'm gonna run a little test at work. Fully charge it and then unplug it. See how long it lasts.
Wish I could toss a huge battery in this phone without making it look like a 90s brick cell phone.

NFS most wanted plays very smoothly in my phone and the nexus' camera doesn't seem to be any better than my phone's.
That said, I'm still gonna get the nexus 4 because it's overall the best phone you can get for that price.
I don't think the note 2 and the nexus 4 are really competing with each other. they're aimed at two different types of people. For me, the note's just too big and too expensive, lol. But the screen is gorgeous so if you're comfortable with the huge screen then it's perfect.

Don't lie. NFS most wanted does NOT play smoothly on this phone. Either that or you'e completely oblivious to framerates. It runs smoother on JB ROMs than ICS ROMs.. but even then I notice frame rates float between the low 20s to low 30s and it fluctuates ALOT. I've tried this game on around 10 ROMs or so. Even with cpu overclocks and overclocked GPU speeds.
The Note 2 stays above 40 fps at all times and doesn't drop one bit. As seen in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyg8vTbGRX8&feature=youtube_gdata_player
And this is a video of the game playing on an exynos powered GSII, and mind you the Mali 400 GPU stomps the adreno 220 found in this phone..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nxTYuL0UsM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
So yea. No.
Feel free to upload a video of gameplay to prove me wrong. Till then, I call bullsh*t.

This phone has been silky smooth and gobbled up everything I've thrown at it. I was shocked at how much faster it is than my Nexus 7, and certainly faster than my Skyrocket.
The only thing that drives me nuts about the processor is the wake lag every time I turn it on from deep sleep. I'll learn to live with it, but this phone would be almost perfect if that were fixed (not including software tweaks).

Yea well reducing the processor to that low of a clock speed is partly responsible for the crazy ass battery life of this phone. I'd rather have another millisecond of unlock time and gain several hours of battery life. Fine with me.

i dunno about that... the Snapdragon S4 Pro is quite a beast... it's technically faster than this exynos...
i bet it comes down to software and how well it works with the hardware

Look at the Engadget review of the Nexus 4. The note 2 (exynos) beat the snapdragon s4 pro in 4/6 benchmarks and they felt like the exy was better in normal use and battery efficiency. Just look up Nexus 4 review on engadget- Nexus 4,Optimus G, note 2 are all compared. Look at the benchmark table. Note 2 wins 4/6.

I love the power and speed of my note.... But seriously, benchmarks mean nothing to me. It's real life usage that matters. . Not an app that measures potential.

I've never seen any huge advantage of the Exynos processors over any others, mainly because they are just stock ARM designs. If Samsung wanted to impress me, they would pay for an architecture license. The A6 is pretty hard to beat, given the performance AND battery life, and I really like my S4 Pro, although it is a bit of a juice hog.
The exynos is a heavily modified arm design, and apples a6 is very very similar to it.

That's why you see iphones perform very well despite the specs looking like they are lacking. The iphone 5 after playing with it is just as fast as my Note 2 but it's only dual core and clocked much lower. RAM is also lower.
Pretty sure the reason the a6 is as smooth or smother with lower specs is due to software optimization and the fact it uses 3 core gpu ( which everyone seems to leave out when they make these statements). That is where apple has done good.

One area Apple has excelled in is GPU performance. I'm surprised Samsung doesn't push the limits in this area harder. I don't play games much myself but as you said it goes beyond just playing your favorite games on a phone.

exynos is king right now (i'm ignoring apple, since it's not apples-to-apples, excuse the pun). exynos 5 is going to be ridiculous. actually it already is, inside the samsung chromebook.

No, not even close. A6/A6X are heavily modified ARM, and Exynos is just tweaked stock. Samsung doesn't have the architecture license, last I checked. Apple does.

t989 is still plenty fast, note 2 is faster, but thats a given
my issue with t989 is that the battery is really crap...after a full year of use the battery wont even last 3 hours screen on, so i figured id let my mom use it for voice only (which still goes on for days)

Yea I was just updating the GSIIIs in my store to 4.1.1. Much smoother than ICS. Although they still stutter and spurt a bit. Although I think that might be due to the crappy demo software T-Mobile loads floor models with lol. You can definitely tell with the notification toggles. They're were choppy on ICS, much smoother on JB.
And yes I agree with your s4 move. I believe Sammy may be putting their dual core a15 exynos/Mali t604 in it. I'm gonna pass on all phones this gen and wait for that. Its monster!! Have you seen the Nexus 10 in action?

Oops! Lol. I kinda thought that after I posted it....but too lazy to worry about it!
I have been eyeballing the Note 2, whats this about an S4 though? I would love the power of the Note 2, in a smaller package. The SGS2 is the perfect size. The Note even in my hands is huge.
The S3 wasn't enough of an improvement over the S2 to be worth it in my eyes. If the S4 shares some of the specs from the Note 2, like perhaps a Quad core CPU, 2 Gb of RAM, and an HD screen. I'm in.
Thought about switching but the phone just seems to big for my day to day use.
I was thinking about the s3, note 2 or waiting for the s4.
So how does compare in holding the s2 in hand vs the note 2

From what I've gathered the Galaxy SIV will sport a 5 inch 1080p SAMOLED screen, a quad core A15 architecture Exynos 5 chip possibly coupled with the Mali t658 GPU. Samsung is really trying to knock it out of the park with the GSIV. Can't wait for spring!

my girl has the S3, and it's faster than the S3. the S3 is a helluva phone tho.
never own the s3 but the Evo lte share the same cpu/gpu. This phone blows the s4 out the water. Everything is silky smooth. I have yet to come across a game that will slow this down. My Evo struggle to play even Temple Run Brave, pretty choppy at some point but not this note 2. At first when I had the Evo I thought that maybe these certain games is not fully optimized for android but this note 2 prove it otherwise.
Regarding your comment about the apple part. Wifey have iphone 5 and ipad 3 but the same games play on my note 2 is outstanding!!!
Best battery in a phone by a long shot. Don't think I have enough proof to say this before but yep apple definitely need to watch out. I'm not a fan of any brand but a big fan of great technology and this note 2 is definitely all that and more.

2 years ago I got myself the Evo 4g, had it stock for the 1st year (because I didn't know about rooting) then I got the samsung galaxy tab 8.9. I wanted to use the tab at work & someone mentioned rooting for free wifi tether. Best thing I ever did. I got the flashing sickness. I would sometimes flash 4 to 5 roms a day. I had my mind set on getting the note 2 ever since I heard about it, but after watching a video on YouTube that compared the note 2 and the DNA, I'm not so sure. The video ran every benchmark that antutu has to offer and the DNA beat the note 2 in almost every test by a little. Also, the DNA has a larger resolution.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Benchnarks are relative. You dont know if its been overclocked or if one has a bunch of apps or services running. You have to look at the specs and see if its better. I ran both of these benchmarks after reading this and my phone had better results several times and worse results several times.

I think you have a point. I noticed that the note 2 has a faster clock speed on it's CPU but thought that perhaps the make of the CPU alone could make a difference in performance (Intel CPUs vs AMD CPUs for example).
In regards to resolution, has anyone seen the difference between the note 2 and the HTC DNA? I don't think the video review does a good job of showing the picture quality of each phone.

I have played with both devices and while the DNA is a nice device it does feel sluggish at times especialy when hopping in between different open programs.
As for the display, its all about user preference. I prefer the Note for the vibrant colors. The DNA seemed a little crisper but it also bothered my eyes after staring at it for awhile.

Um, the GN2 has an s pen. Is there any comparison?

I think you're doing yourself a serious disservice if you make your decision based on benchmark scores from either one of these apps.

I believe there is a comparison between the two phones as they are both rather large phones and leaders in performance.
I personally don't consider the s pen the note 2's defining characteristic (although I can see why some would). The s pen aside, the note 2 is a beast of a phone. I think of the s pen as an added bonus, similar to my Samsung Epic 4g's slide out keyboard.

These would be the least of the things I would use to consider a new phone. I was just running these and was suprised at the score. I've been set on this phone for a while. And if I don't get it, ill probably consider another HTC. I love the sense.

I always find myself messing with the benchmark apps of Quadrant and Antutu, it does do a good comparison. And for those who say some times it is slower and sometimes higher.. When you run a car/motorcycle on the dyno or quarter mile don't you also get higher and lower results? It may not be the most concrete comparison system but it isn't garbage.(not saying anyone in HERE called it garbage but have heard it in other places). Anyways for a 7600 score on quadrant what were you running for clock speed min max, the gpu settings etc. I noticed you were on the Venum Ice reborn ROM. it is Odexed, aren't those supposed to be faster?
Also how do the fellas on top of the Antutu boards running the Gn2 run the test at resolutions of like 720x8 and other crazy res's like that?
I had a couple real low 7k quadrant runs but they got wiped flashing ROM's and not saving it. but here's what I do have.

S3 or nexus 4?

I have the s3 and its a great phone but not that impressed. I don't use any of the voice features or anything and since the jb update I have had battery and other issues. A friend wants to trade for his nexus 4 and I am wondering if anyone has thoughts. Other then no expansion on memory or changing battery what do you think? I have watched many videos but I trust xda members more then comparison videos.
Oh I know lte also but I dont use lte much anyway.

People in my area seam to think the note 2 is a bar of gold. They have them priced close to and even above what you can buy them new no contract price. While they are pricing the s3 around 250. Plus I had the note 1 and hated the size. I am an update junky which is why I am thinking about it.

The Nexus 4 is not all hype its got same CPU as the Note II which is the fastest processor available in a phone right now. If the Note II wasn't so thick and bulky i would get it but I prefer the S3 because of additional storage and removable battery 16gb just isn't enough for me but if it is for you get the Nexus 4 you wont be disappointed with either.

I have an S3 and my GF has an LG Optimus G. I wanted to see her get a Nexus 4 but we gave up. That said I'm impressed with the Optimus G, based on feel and hardware I would pick the LG phone, but I am very pleased with my S3. The performance and battery life of the LG is amazing, also black is a good color for a phone.
Lovin' my rooted S3 running stock 4.2.1 but if you're not into rooting N4 is a great choice especially the price of it. Can't really go wrong with either imo. It all comes down to preference

Actually, the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G have the same processor. S4 Pro. The Note II uses Samsung's own quad core processor (same as the S3 International)
Its like comparing apples to oranges. The Optimus G has no dev support, so that's a no go for me. Also heard the camera is brutal in low light. Yet the phone has some amazing specs for a decent price.
The Nexus 4 has amazing specs, and for the price nothing beats it. I can live with no expandable memory as long as I got 16GB. Hilariously, people are selling them for $500 to $600 because they are hard to get. I'll just wait till its back in stock.
And the golden Note II. I'll get one some day. But not for $650 to $800. Imagine telling my wife we can't afford the mortgage this month cause I bought a phone Lol. Almost as stupid as people paying over $800 for a iPhone 5. Ludicrous.

Can you live without LTE? Question is self explanatory if you aren't in a LTE market.
Need more than 16gb? Nexus isn't for you.
Battery whore? Need not apply with nexus 4.
Only person that can answer these questions is themselves.

Are we talking stock for stock? With software modifications LTE can be enabled with the nexus 4.
Is the battery life really that bad as well? I haven't heard any complaints. But then again I'm not poking around on the Nexus forums. It feels like cheating

Correct, that's my mistake I thought the Note II featured the same S4 Pro found in the Optimus G and Nexus 4. The international Note II and apparently the US versions as well have the slightly upgraded Exynos 4212 @ 1.6ghz compared to the original 1.4ghz 4212 found in the International S3. To be fair though the S4 Pro might be a tad bit faster and more secure, not sure if you heard about the Exynos kernel exploit but the S4 Pro seems a bit of a better option at this point.

Wait or go with nex if 16gb is enough for ya . On s3 - i wouldn't really recommend buying a device with previous gen soc when alternatives are available or are sure to become available in short time

if you go on the Nexus 4 forum, you'll see a lot of complain about the battery.
And according to this test : http://mobileraptor.blogspot.ca/2012/12/google-nexus-4-battery-life-tests.html
if you only use your nexus to make call, you'll be fine. However, for everything else, the battery drains a lot faster than the GS3 :

S3 lags. But Nexus 4 is a different case. It never stutters when transitions between apps to apps and open a new app unlike the S3 which I hate that problem a lot on my S3. I believed that Samsung screwed up the Project Butter for all Mali 400MP devices.

A couple friends have N4's, the battery is horrific. Theyre all on custom roms running conservative n everything and just cant beat my CM with standard settings.

N4 was a huge let down from Google.
