I see several post with different options to get root access to my Xperia Arc S LT18a
How can I know which list of all those is the current and recommended?
I currently own an Xperia Arc S Lt18a which I previously upgraded to 4.0.4, 4.1.B.0.587 following the instructions from a thread I can't find
I have a locked bootloader, and prefer to don't unlock it. Just want root access. This is a mexican Telcel phone
Thanks in advance. I just can't decide which is the current or advised method.

yes
To ask Questions about developing your device, installing ROMs, software and themes you must go to the Q&A or General Forum.
Remember, your question has very likely been asked already, so please search before posting.

Thanks for the second half of your answer. As I said, I was looking for a link.
About the first half, I believe you're very cute to advice me to read, even when I stated I read a several threads, and even when I stated I already upgraded to ICS, which of course involved a lot of reading.
I see lots of threads which seem equal to me, everyone giving similar but not equal advice, and everyone offering different links to similar but not identical files and Roms.
Maybe I'm just stupid. Thanks anyway for the link

First of all hello everybody
Since this is my first post and im semi noob il try to be as explicit as I can.
I personaly own an lt15i so I have some xp.
A friend of mine gave me his arc in order to root/instal custom rom etc.
-network locked on Orange Romania.
- seems to be not unlockable (bootloader I mean) since I have no Rooting Status section in the service menu.
-2.3.3 Version update dosnt work (via phone or pc companion,it says it has the latest version )
- baseband version 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_21-29
Kernel 2.6.32.9-pref [email protected]#1
Last Section (About compiling smth, its not in english and i forgot its name)
3.0.1.A.0.150
I need to get it to ICS.
What can be done?
The phone is not rooted, its in perfect state and it only has some apps instaled from the market (player etc).Except that its as new as you buy it.
Would rooting resolve the issue?
Would network unlocking?
Any ideas, sugestions or anything else would greatly be apreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Not a very good first post it has to be said. Read the stickys, read them again and once more after that. Then ask any questions still remaining on the relevant threads.

I do not understand this attitude around here,no offence but an answer would of take you less time to write.
I read all the stiky's (except for the themes forum and accesories ) and did not find any helpfull information. Been googling and forum searching the issue for about 4 hours. If you are willing to manualy read 100+ reply's with 1% change of finding helpfull information please be my guest (I used topic search duh)
I might be retarded but : No unlocked bootloader no kernel instal,no kernel instal no ics since its gb kernel. No official update for my phone and I suspect it might be network related.. A simple yes or no answer is hard to get in this days... Anyway thank you for your reply and helpfull information
People get such replies off me when they've clearly showed no initiative. You say you've searched, read the stickys etc but everyone says that despite the fact the fact most of the answers can be found in the stickys.
I've got nothing against People asking questions but when new threads are started on a daily basis asking about things that have been answered or discussed many many times over it gets annoying after a while, and if like you say you've found nothing relating to rooting or unlocking the boot loader that's helpful in 4 hours, then god only knows what you've been searching for.
Also, click on the first and last link in my signature.

Ok I might be an idiot.
So basicly the answer is no, maybe this was a retarded topic since SE says
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

I thought that could be done if somthing on the phone changed,I guess the answer is no but I dont see any logic in this, wouldnt expect anyone to explain anyway.
Let me rephrase my question then,as a noob user as I am.
Why cant I OFFICIALY UPDATE the phone since ICS is actually released for this phone? If I am again that retarded that I did not find an answer on this forum or via google,I swear to god Il get a nokia 1100 and leave this forum for ever.
Just pick a ftf from the sticky in general and flash it with the flashtool, much easier than waiting, and you'd have to ask Sony why they've not yet released it.

Thank you dear sir! As far as I read I tought I needed to change the kernel in order to get ICS which is impossible.
If you had said that in the begining I would not wasted so much time and now I know more. Instead of mini raging with all that blabla like in the video. I did not honestly know anything about those ftf files,Im guessing they also update the kernel. Honestly I would of never had thought of searching for something like this.

I'll not mention that you've said you were "googling and forum searching the issue for about 4 hours". Yes they flash the kernel too, and to unlock the boot loader you can use the S1 Tool, the link to it is in my guide (see sig), which I assume you will surely have read, at least skimmed through it.

So you have managed to unlock the boot loader and flash the ROM and Kernel? Thanks for compliment, it used to be a sticky but I asked for it to be removed as I wasn't updating it much, but try and keep it up to date these days.
Welcome to the forum.

Yes, and go to the general section and read the stickys before starting threads asking for what's been posted numerous times. Just because you're a noob doesn't mean you can't read.

Well, i'm a newbie too, however, after going through the development section, the first thing to start is read (and believe me there is no end to it)
Go to the development section, and starting reading whatever catches your eye (from page 1 of the related post). There are tons and tons of things you can do with your phone, but remember, these tons of things have been posted based on a lot of variables (for e.g. what are the full specs of your phone, carrier, etc).
It is extremely important that you read only and only for your specific device.

Hello,
Yes, I've gone through many pages in this website before posting this question .
(1) I'm using Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S (2.3.4 // 4.0.2.A.0.62). Let us say this configuration "State A".
(2) I wish only to root it. I don't wish to unlock bootloader. I don't wish to change my current OS version. Is this possible?
(3) Let answer to above question is "yes", and I root the phone successfully to, say, "State B". Then would it be possible, by some means, to bring the phone again in "State A"?
Thanks & regards,
Maria.

http://www.phonandroid.com/forum/post747948.html#p747948 is all about ERoot which is also available here in XDA at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219711
However above page has a link http://www.phonandroid.com/forum/sony-et-android-pour-les-nuls-t25364.html which is very very useful for beginners like me.
