Screen brightness/colour comparison - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got a Galaxy S lying around and decided to compare their screens. Note 2 screen is not as bright as Galaxy S and the colour is not exactly white:
Both screens are at maximum brightness and I've tried all 4 Tone settings of Note 2 under Display settings.
Do you think that is a defect and a good reason to return the phone?
I did some testing and concluded that it's only the white colour that looks washed out and with a hint of pink. I've tested with Galaxy S, iPhone 4 & Nokia 5800 and Note 2 looks the best in my eyes. What do you think?

No I don't, maybe those brightness & color differences are sort of tweaks to reduce battery consumption

I would be happy if anyone can post comparison shots, so I don't feel bad about my phone

You'll see a big improvement in the Note 2 screen if you go to Settings>Display>Auto Adjust Screen Tone and then uncheck the box

Already done that - still not as bright and white as Galaxy S.

Your pics didn't show up earlier, but looking at them now that's a massive difference!
My suggestion would be to take it to a shop and compare with a few others.
I don't have any other Samsung phones to compare mine too but I do think it goes brighter than that, and looks less pink.

Well pal, I don't have good camera atm to take a shot of my screen and my iP 5's. But I can surely say that the 'white' colour in Note II is NOT white, while it is perfectly fine on my iP 5. My previous Samsung was a Galaxy S II and it wasn't white too. But I had a Samsung Wave S8500, which had perfectly fine 'white'. I don't know what's Samsung is doing lately but whatever it is I don't like it.
PS: Just one thing you could do, just tilt the phone screen at 45º angle with your eyes and see, you will see the max white from your Note 2, which isn't the case if you look at it from a 90º angle, like you did on those photos.
This is why I use Screen Adjuster and Blue to +7, I like bluish white lot more than yellowish or pinkish white.

I'm going to a shopping mall tomorrow to compare it with 2-3 other Notes and if I see a difference I'll just get a new one from my operator - they were more than happy to exchange.

Yeah I noticed that too - watching it at an angle makes the white look better. maybe it's just how the screen was designed. Who knows. One thing is sure - in one month I won't notice anything, cause I'll just get used to the colour representation.

Screen problem: Is this affect of Pentile Matrix or not.

Hallo friends, i read lot of about problem with this kind of display( pentile matrix)
I have vertical and horizontal banding too. But this one is something what is bothering me much more.

That's nothing to do with the Pentile Matrix! Definitely a defective screen, return it to the store and ask for a warranty replacement. The 'banding' is more to do with the AMOLED screen technology rather than the Pentile, as it was present on my SGS2, but is generally only visible under certain conditions (background colour/brightness).
Regards.
Is it visible on colors other than grey?
Sure, on blue background too, sometimes on white.(poarws photo with blue background) It depends on brightness.
More visible at white background with high brightnes.
More visible at blue and grey background with lower brightnes.
It does have to do with the Amoled technology, but I doubt it's a defective display. You can try to exchange it to see if it really is defective or not.
I have some vertical and horizontal banding only with lowest brightness at the white background.
With maximum brightness no lines or whatever
AMOLED has a few imperfections here and there, so it's not surprising. But if it's bothering you too much exchange it for another one, it could have less prevalent issues.
Just performed a test using screen test app my screen looks great.

Mine is fine too but 60 percent and more. But this one issue bother me pernament ( no matter if 30 or 70 percent brightnes)
Tuesday iam going for a new piece, hope that will not be affected worse than mine
Try viewing those shades of grey on your phones, it's usually the most problematic color. Use a low brightness setting (around 25%) at a dim environment.
This exists on all OLED screens. Its the exact same on my Nexus S. It has nothing to do with pentile matrix, but OLED.

Yes i had nexus one galaxy s galaxy s II so i can compare, nothing like that before that.
50-60 percent of brightnes
I have the Galaxy Note and it has the same panel as the Galaxy Nexus albeit at 1280x800 instead of the Nexus's 1280x720. (Super AMOLED HD with Pentile sub-pixel arrangement)
My screen is great. The whites are brighter than they were on the Nexus. The Nexus displayed whites with a yellowish tint especially on low brightness. Plus I can't seen any banding on the screen and I have tested it on White, Red, Blue, Green and Grey backgrounds.
Im getting a new Galaxy Nexus in a couple of days. Since this unit is from a later batch I hope that there is no banding on the screen too.
Funny, I have a similar issue to Delarock's on my Galaxy S2, manufacturing date is 19th of October. I'm still thinking whether to replace it or not since since it's only visible on dark'ish grey, I couldn't replicate it on lighter greys, white, or any other color at various brightness settings.

Hard for me to get a good photo but you can see the same problem on my NEXUS S screen. Its just a characteristic of OLED displays in general.

Really similar to the screen on my new Galaxy Nexus. I didnt notice the diagonal right away but that is certainly more significant. My screen a rosy hue in the bottom half and especially the lower left.
I'd love to see a similar picture of someone who says that their screen doesn't have it.
(Click for 100% crop)
So are some of these screens defective? Or is it really just the nature of the beast?
How does one tell what manufacturing date their device was made to? Would I be able to go to a store and exchange for a datecode that shows no banding issues?
I am having the same issue ... another thing I notice is weird issues with the camera while in a dark room. If I have my camera on in a low light room, I get this weird "dancing" of black blotches in the really dark areas of that room.
I like all solid black wall paper, I find the fastest easiest way to get it is to turn off the camera flash, put my finger over the lense and take a pic. Worked for every other phone I have but the GNex. I get a weird blotchy image ... now I am on GNex#3 (other 2 I returned for different issues) and I have noticed this camera thing on #1 and now #3. With the first one I assumed this was normal ... but after going from the second one to the third I see a HUGE difference in screens. With phone #2 I was able to do the phone/black wallpaper with no weird distortion. Now the really strange thing is that that same pic taken with the second phone (that displyed pure black on that device) shows up blotchy on device 3.
Hope this makes sense to someone lol cuz reading it back I sound crazy.
I just hope the folks at the Verizon store don't give me a hard time trying to get another one!

[Q] Who else is getting the dingy yellowish white color problem?

So my Note 2 and some others are experiencing dull and yellowish white contrast as talked about in this POST. Also this POST shows the Note 2 being much brighter. We've tested this with both units on high brightness and dynamic mode on, with the browser brightness all the way up as well. I even did a hard reset, and the low brightness dingy whites are still there on the Note 2. I'm looking into returning the phone for a replacement through the AT&T store I bought it from. Most people don't have this problem on their Note 2's so it seems like its only affecting a few units, but we need to get this out in the open. Maybe there are two different panel types shipping out. Please check and compare your Note 2's white's brightness compared to other Note 2's and other original notes and report here.
I'm also seeing the same dirty white screen. I might go to the local AT&T store to compare it with another Note 2 if they have a demo unit. If anyone can do this and get side by side comparisons I'd like to see this. I hesitate to do a replacement because they are probably only going to offer a refurbished unit as a replacement and the chances are it's going to be another unit with the same issue.

The AT&T store said they would order me a new one. When I called customer care (611) they would only offer a refurbished phone. So stick to the exchanging it at the store. The store I bought it from doesn't have any more in stock but are willing to order me a new one.
You know what stop comparing note 2 to other screens. Every screen has different color calibration and software versions effect this.
My first phone was galaxy s1 and the screen seemed fine since I had no other phone to compare but I compared to my ipod touch 2nd gen. Sgs1 had blue tint. Then I got sgs2 and the screen was very purplish compared to my friends sgs2.
I was obsessed to get the perfect screen so I changed it 5 times. 1 for the dead pixel and 2nd for the white spot on tje screen and the last 3 for the purplish hue. 3rd phone was really purple and obviously something was wrong. And I checked all the phones that are on display in various stores they had yellowish hue. But still compared to sgs1 it had warmer whites. Now I have note 2 and I recently put all 4 of them side by side and compared.
Sgs1: cool blue tint, looks very unnatural.
Sgs2: has a red hue compared to sgs1 but still looks not as warm (red) compared to itouch.
Note2: compared to sgs1&sgs2 it has a warmer white, much much better color balance of them all. However compared to itouch I realized it has a yellow hue.
BUT!!!! I compared it to my laptop's white and 40" lcd tv's white, note 2 still as not yellow as my laptop and tv.
If I were you I would try to enjoy the phone instead of comparing it unless its an obvious defect. Each screen is different and has to be calibrated. Its just means the calibration is different then other devices.
I have to admit, when I compared note 2 to itouch I was surprised by the yellow hue but I am not gonna go and change it again. Not every 2 screen is the same.
Think that your "note2 doesnt have a yellow hue" , maybe its your old note has a blue hue?
Also if you tilt the screen and look it from different angles you will see yellow hue disappear. I had the exact same thing on sgs2. You have to live with it. I am %100 sure even if you change 5 times you will end up with the same problem.

warfanax is pretty right I went and exchanged it today for another note 2 and it looks the same an 4 units tested in store, all had warm whites....so that being said the OG note still has a brighter "looking"screen and brighter whites even if they are blue it gives the appearance of being brighter. Oh well, I'll live with it for the quad core and 2 gigs of ram though. Cant have everything...
I don't have the programming knowledge but don't think an app that changes screen colors is very hard to make. Some kind of color boost is already included in our phones in display section.
There was an app like that for sgs1 that let you tweak RGB colors.

Thanks for the link but that app only washed the screen out with the contrast adjustment. It washed out the black levels. I just realized that I'm running Paranoid Android on my original Note and under Settings>Display there is an option for filtering and dimness. Its set to (20) by default. If I lower the number to like 10 it then matches my note 2's screen brightness at 100%. Its as if this Paranoid Android setting makes the back light on the Note 1 put out brighter (while killing battery life I'm sure) while still keeping the black levels black. Could this setting be what is making my note look brighter than my note 2 and can settings like those be applied with a new rom or an app on the Note 2?
I exchanged out my Grey GN2 for a white version for another defect issue yesterday and the screen on this new phone is definitely whiter. I'm happy, but I agree with others that the yellowish screen was probably due to normal manufacturing tolerance variations.

[Q] Note 2 Display Quality

I checked out the Note2 again last week this time only for about 15 min when I stopped by Best Buy & immediately felt like this is such a real huge upgrade from my EVO 4G that I must have it soon. Then I started noticing the whites weren't as white as my EVO & it could be brighter (set to max) & even experienced some lag but I did not have time to do a reboot.
I'm somewhat curious to see the Droid DNA, 1080p natural color screen with amazing cameras like the OneX & improved speaker etc but obviously annoyed with battery & sdcard situtation (not a huge fan of all the red styling either but would slap a case on it) so I'll check it out. I think the OneX variants are the best "smartphone" display & camera & at 5" DDNA should be impressive (always thought 5" is a great size but the N2 managed its 5.55" amazingly as well & the stylus puts it in its own class).
The following links seem rather disappointing for the Note2:

So do the non-white whites & brightness of the screen especially around sunlight on the N2 ever bother anyone in real life use?
- Thnx
Funny, if you research the specs of the Galaxy S3 from a year ago, these are the same specs they said about it back then that they are saying about tbe S4 now.

I remember S3 rumors of a 13 MP camera & 1080p screen (but not @ 4.99") & quad core not 8 cores...
So can I assume the non-white whites & N2 brightness especially around sunlight on the N2 doesn't bother you in real life use?
The S4 & Note3 will likely have 1080p screens & hopefully whiter whites & greater brightness so the Note2 will not likely last as long as I'd like as a primary handset anyway..
I love the screen, the whites don't bother me a bit. I also, however, do not walk around with another screen next to mine. The grass may be greener, but my grass flack out rocks!

I did do that the last time at Best Buy & while it did lower the color saturation it did not obviously make the whites any whiter or the screen brighter. I found myself going back to the default standard color mode but I do appreciate having options..
Even compared to my 2 yr old EVO, the whites are not as white & screen seems less bright overall.
I still think the Note 2 is the best overall handset ATM but the display could be brighter with whiter whites & higher res which will likely all be there on the Note 3..:good:

While I mentioned that I appreciate the Note 2 screen mode options, in tests I seemed to revert to the standard default color mode as changing screen mode only affected color saturation without obviously improving the whites or brightness or sharpness which all seem better on the HTC One X. The default standard color mode seemed to make the screen less dull than Movie mode so I'm curious how many people actually primarily stick with other modes like Movie etc?

[Q] Pink tint on lower half of screen? Normal?

Hey everyone,
I got my black AT&T Note 4 earlier today. I noticed the lower half of the screen is slightly darker, and has a slight pinkish tint on a white screen.
I do notice it in some apps, like Kindle when readinga book. Top of screen is slightly brighter, and when background is white there's a very slight pink tint.
Is that normal? Or should brightness be uniform and no tint?
EDIT: I added a photo. It's not a good photo but you can see how one side is tinted differently. In the photo the brighter top looks greenish but in real life it's not green. You can also the slight pinkish tint in the bottom half, which is the left side of the photo.
I wouldn't want to comment based on the image you uploaded directly since how a camera captures a digital display is much different than what the naked eye will see. If the picture on the panel is not consistent and appears polarized in any way, I would consider that to be faulty. Get it replaced.
Galaxy Note 4 (pink tint lower screen)
Hi there,
I have also noticed a pink tint on the lower half of the screen on new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
As i intend to do a lot of drawing on this device the tint is unacceptable.
I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the display?
I had this issue with my Galaxy S3 display. I had at&t exchange it.
Have this same issue on my Note 4. Posted some pics over in the thread on this topic for the Note 3 before I thought to check here. Basically there's a brightness and gamma gradient from top to bottom. The top half is perfect and the bottom half gradually fades to a point where you lose the first 8-9 squares on the lagom.nl black level test.
This one emphasizes the black crush, which can be visible in video content on a dark screen (and makes dark colored backgrounds fade to black towards the bottom):
And here's one on a white background. At first it seems like a white point issue (which I would tolerate since it's common on IPS as well), but it's a brightness gradient:
Between this and the fact that AT&T disabled the slider for auto brightness I'm a little frustrated with this supposed best smartphone display ever (I realize this second issue isn't Samsung's fault, but the auto brightness is unusable without that feature). I bought the phone at Best Buy which is mostly out of stock right now so an exchange isn't likely, assuming they even take this seriously as an issue.
My note 4 does not display this issue.
No issues here. Display looks very consistent.

Have you tried a dark background in a dark room? For me it wasn't that obvious until I did this (was messing around in Sketchbook). If the majority of screens are better than mine I'll definitely be trying to get a replacement as this is bothering me.
I just installed Lux to resolve my backlight issue and its settings menu background fades nearly entirely to black at the bottom.
*Edit: So far it sounds like this is an anomaly. You would expect places like Anandtech to report on it if they'd seen that amount of variation. I'm going to have a good time trying to convince someone at BB that this is a real defect though.
Erica Griffin talks about this issue in her Note 4 review, around the 20 min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyNWrQJzMY
I got a replacement and it's perfect. No pink tint.
So, if you have the tint return it. Not all Note 4s are like that.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. I think in general it's easier to trust reviews on retail-purchased devices over mainstream reviews with PR department selected units.
I went to BB today and looked at the display units. All perfect, but then that's not surprising (every company gives their display/review units a second QC pass, even Apple). I'll probably head to the only BB in the area that has units tomorrow and see if I can do an exchange. As long as they don't make me sign one of those "no more returns" agreements I've heard about I'm willing to take another shot in the display lottery.

Good to hear! I'll post my results after my exchange attempt tomorrow. Aside from the gradient I am impressed with the display. Not as bright as LCD in daylight, but I was drawing on a black BG last night and noticed that it has deeper blacks than my Pioneer plasma.

Fingers crossed for you to get a nice one like mine.
Yeah, the blacks and colors are amazing on the Note 4. The whites are not as bright as the iPhone 6+, but they are fine and way better than whites on my Note 2. In all other respects the Note 4 screen is overall better than even iPhone 6+'s excellent LCD.
One minor disappointment is the very high resolution has made some emulators dog slow as they attempt to render at full resolution, i.e. PPSSPP and ePSXe using ogle renderer. Hoping the devs find a workaround, maybe rendering at half or quarter rest instead - that would still be higher rest than my Note 2 at full rest.
What's the color of your device? Anyone have this problem in the white version?
my note 4 has pink tint
I have the same problem on my Verizon white note 4 but on top half of display. Replacement should arrive by Friday :/
You can replicate this by looking at the screen at an extreme angle, obviously the ones that see green and purple straight on are screen defects.
I have a white version and whites are perfect and too bright at high setting. I keep mine half way. The whites are better IMHO than the iphones. The colors more vibrant and, the sharpness is ridiculously sharp. I dont see how they can improve it. I only thing there should be a waynto adjust the color saturation, because basic mode doesnt do much on mine.
My Note 4 has the same issue. It almost looks like the while balance differs from top to bottom, but it is really the brightness that is different.
This is a photo of my Note 4 showing a solid colored image at #030303 (very close to black). It shows how different the pixels in the bottom and in the top emit light.
Image can be seen at 1x.com/tmp/uniformity_note4.jpg

I have a similar issue, though mine is brighter on the right side than it is on the left. Very noticeable with dark background in lower light situations as someone else mentioned.

is it just me or is the display pretty disappointing

i don't know why i seem to be the only one, i always wanted a note because it's been praised as the best display of all time i finally got a note 10+ and the display disappoints me to no end, first off the colors are dull, my xperia xz1 on super vivid mode has more vibrant colors, second off the brightness it's not amazing if i compare my note 10+ to my huawei mate 10 pro the huawei appears more vibrant and bright, the huawei is running a custom rom, my note 10 + has custom white balance settings with green and red turned down to 0 and it's still too yellow for my taste the screen mode is itensive and yes bluelight filter is off, when i use the note 10+ on it's own i get used too it and i see no issues with the display but then i start up my mate 10 pro and get a much whiter better white and overall brighter image, my note 10+ is set to +10 brightness and high performance mode all auto brightness off and max brightness, white still appears dull colors appear dull, why am i the only one who feels this way?
Was gonna ask if your blue light filter thing was on. The white seers into my brain unless I have the filter on. This seems to be the best display I've ever used. And you're saying other phones are brighter? I haven't found a single phone brighter than this one. Maybe a defective screen?

i don't know why i seem to be the only one, i always wanted a note because it's been praised as the best display of all time i finally got a note 10+ and the display disappoints me to no end, first off the colors are dull, my xperia xz1 on super vivid mode has more vibrant colors, second off the brightness it's not amazing if i compare my note 10+ to my huawei mate 10 pro the huawei appears more vibrant and bright, the huawei is running a custom rom, my note 10 + has custom white balance settings with green and red turned down to 0 and it's still too yellow for my taste the screen mode is itensive and yes bluelight filter is off, when i use the note 10+ on it's own i get used too it and i see no issues with the display but then i start up my mate 10 pro and get a much whiter better white and overall brighter image, my note 10+ is set to +10 brightness and high performance mode all auto brightness off and max brightness, white still appears dull colors appear dull, why am i the only one who feels this way?

You must have a dud. the screen on my Exynos N10+ is freaking amazing!
As zzcool said, my screen is absolutely gorgeous, now I see netflix in its full splendor, but you have to tweak the display settings to suit your taste
The display is what everyone who see's my Note 10+ mentions first. They are amazed at how good it is...
Maybe a side to side comparison to another phone might show it up but everyone who's seen it goes gaga over it...

it's set to high performance which forces max resolution and max brightness, the images i posted earlier show the difference between my note 10+ and my mate 10 pro you see how the color of the white has a red tint despite being as cold as it possibly can get

my tweaks are the following
max performance with brightness 10+ enabled and brightness slider to the highest possible settingm, intensive with the temp slider to the far left as in coldest as it gets then advanced white balance both red and green turned down to 0 blue turned to max meaning the screen should have an extreme blue tint it doesn't, i tried the google books method and blue light is always off when i launch the app so it's not that, i even tried calibrating colors under accessability where you have to rearrange colored balls result are almost identical to what i had with a slight yellow tint to the white so worse than before i turned that off again
i had this issue with the original display and now the replacement one when i havenothing to compare to white looks great colors pop screen looks good white feels slightly dull but it's hard to tell, but then i go back to my xperia xz1 or mate 10 pro and feel a huge difference in white and overall color performance, both displays pop a lot more than the note 10+
might i add i am ultra sensitive to warm displays so what looks great to someone else might look like a yellow mess to me i always increase blue on all displays i have my sony af9 is set to cold with all color enhancers to max i need colors that pop with no yellow tint what so ever, i am not a fan of accurate colors at all
Being the most accurate display of colors doesn't mean it'll be your favorite. Maybe you prefer less accurate (seriously, no snark here). But brightness should be pretty clear cut... No idea why yours wouldn't be as bright.

well i already know i hate accurate colors i want bright vibrant cold colors anything accurate to me looks dull and yellow the surface pro i have which is known for it's accurate calibration almost looked black and white to me until i got it decent by forcing intel control panel and increasing color intensity but the screen was so terrible on it i stopped using it i just couldn't deal with that display so it's been collecting dust ever since, my xperia xz1 is using super vivid mode with blue turned up to 171 the screen becomes complete trash without super vivid mode and it becomes the best display i have ever seen with super vivid mode turned on, i wasn't a huge fan of the display on the xperia 1 either that phone has no super vivid mode and the display was rather dull to me but the brightness and white was miles better than the note 10+ especially when it forced the brightness to max on apps like youtube (it dimmed outside of certain apps which i could not handle so i sent it back but on youtube the brightness was just mindblowing the white was so perfect and clear then it wen't gray as soon as it would dim when i exited the youtube app)

which white looks best to you in your honest opinion? the note 10 is as mentioned on the highest brightness possible with intensive mode turned on with the coldest possible setting and high performance mode with brightness 10+ adaptive brightness off blue light filter off brightness slider max

I would say the Mate looks slightly brighter and whiter. Not sure what could be happening. My screen looks great. I have to tone it down quite a bit so the images don't seer into my retinas. Simply turning off the blue light filter makes my eyes hurt.
Remove your sunglasses.
thank me later

I believe that the Note interface is more greyish than white. This is why even without the blue filter, if you do not increase backlight alot, it is not quite white.
It can be seen on the Home screen, when you group-up some apps icons in a folder, have a look at the white of the icons and compare it to the white of the folder itself. Not same white. The surrounding white of the folder is grey, not white.
Same goes for the google search on home screen, it is not white compared to the the white of say, the Google Apps icon.
Maybe try another theme if you do not like it ?
