I am a bit new to Android and the GS3. But honestly I am already sick and tired of waiting for Jelly Bean as well as some of the problems of Touchwiz. So I think CM10 is the next thing for me. But I am unsure of the differencr between Touchwiz and CM10. For example I love the quick settings panel, the brilliang camera app and settings, Wi-Fi direct sharing (sbeam) , as well as the smart dialer and decent task manager. I just want to make sure everything will be better.
it's your call. i'd say you should try it out, and if you don't like it, you can always go back to stock touchwiz. just remember to read the op and the last few pages of the thread to make sure there aren't any unwanted problems to deal with. and of course, backup your current rom.

Stock Jelly Bean has been leaked. This will give you all the Jelly Bean goodness without resorting to a custom ROM.
You could also install the touchwiz launcher on CM10 if you like the TouchWiz UI. (I don't)
You can always flash back to stock ICS if you don't like where you end up. Just read the original post and make sure you understand what you're doing so you don't end up with a brick.

So if I tried it and didn't like it, I could just go back to normal and get updates OTA and everything.
Not all S3 are identical. The radio interface are slightly different, region wise. So yes , you can download a Samsung stock ROM off the Internet, it will not be exactly the same. Call and battery performance will be affected slightly.
You can use a backup to restore, it is the closest you can get to original, but rooted.
That it's the complete picture.

Things I like about touchwiz.
Movable home screens.
Little red flags on home screen icon showing unread status.
Social hub for Twitter and Facebook.
A working music player
Swipe right to call, left to SMS
Task manager, less of an issue in ICS and later.
Good alarm app
Best battery performance without tweaking.

yes, but not without some work. you'd need to either restore your backup and unroot, and remove the custom recovery or odin back to stock.

Yeah, the camera is brilliant.
Then I recommend Drew Garen Serenity rom! Its Touchwiz JB, its a GNote2 port, works great if you want the same TW features and more! (Gnote stuff), just use a launcher. I'm using tasks AOKP rom myself and its awesome

I've been stuck with AOSP. I love the TW/Samsung features, just not the interface. Coming from a Nexus, I just got comfortable with minimal. Slimbean, Aokp and liquid smooth are great base ROMs that are light.

The whole thing with that is I don't particularly care for Touchwiz. It kinda ugly and heavy with useless stuff. I just don't want to lose useful features.

yea im in the same position you are, i still change back and fourth because of features on TW that i miss and need often.
I am considering just flashing and trying it out and flashing back if I don't like it. I honestly don't mind Touchwiz, but I feel like if I give in and and wait, then I will just keep falling further behind. Perhaps Touchwiz is better now, but it certainly won't be in January
Touch wiz has too much overlay IMO. Liquid smooth is one of the best AOKP ROMs I've tried. But you will be missing out on Sbeam and everything Samsung related of course. But the sheer speed of aokp is a good enough trade off for me to lose just the neat camera and svoice.
I am using AOKP from Task and ktoonez, I love it but really miss smart stay and allshare cast to the point where I'll probably go back to TW JB once ATT actually releases it. Is there a JB ROM that includes those?
Hey guys,
Is there anyway to get the TouchWiz S3 camera features with one of the custom roms or just stick to a stock?
My brother loves the AOKP but he is insistent on having those default camera features/effects that came with the phone.

Hello guys!
I'm one of the few who actually loves touch wiz and I'm very happy with the rom I'm using now (wanam lite).
I think my phone is almost perfect the way it is but I was missing two things from jelly bean! Google now and the notifications!
I already installed Google now in my phone, Btw it works great, and now I want to know if there is any way to have the jelly bean notifications in my phone as well! That would be perfect!
Thanks for the help in advance!!

Yea, JB notifications on ICS would be superb. Hope some1 ports it.
You could try using a theme "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.photox.jbhd&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5waG90b3guamJoZCJd" But I believe that changes it so no touchwiz other than that I have no idea :/ I don't mind not having touchwiz not much different tbh.

Yea, good suggestion. I like CM10. It's super fast and functional, but it has too many bugs for me (Xperia PLAY user). I guess they should give it a shot though.
Wait for Samsung to release the JB update in the next couple of months. I'm sure at that point the stock ROMs will upgrade alongside it.
Hey everyone. My Mother-in-Law has the Sprint SGSII and.....she hates it! She needs the capabilities the phone offers for her business, but she is extremely frustrated with the UI of Android. She is currently running the most recent ICS update. I am curious to know, from experienced users of this phone, what the most user-friendly ROM is - considering the end user.

I recommend the Blu Kuban Rom, its pretty much drama free. Use Odin to install a rooted version of ICS, then install CWM Recovery. Once that is installed slap the Blu Kuban ROM onto your SD card. Boot into recovery and install the ROM.
You will want to read some FAQs and guides if you haven't done it before.
Probably miui

My vote goes for stock with Apex launcher, the feature to lock the desktop is amazing for newbie android users, grouping shortcuts, customize the bottom icons, slight theming, working good so far.
I've rooted my SGS3 & am running StrongSteve's Odexed Blue, but this is my first Android phone & rooting experience. I will definately read the stickies & FAQs before I do anything. Hopefully the Epic 4G Touch isn't too different from my SGS3.

Stock, let the mother in law deal with Sprint especially if she uses her phone for business. Next thing ya know you get blamed if she misses a call or gets a late text.
Try a different launcher like apex or nova first. Lots of ppl also like go launcher, many themes
I have Nova launcher and I like it. Or go to settings, apps, select all, go to twlauncher and clear defaults then hit the home key to switch to twlauncher and you can make it your default for a straight Android look.

I got my tech retarded dad an evo 3d and put an AOSP ICS rom on it for him.It seems to be working well enough. As such I cannot recommend an AOSP rom enough for simplicity and ease of use. Google is like pretty good at what they do and IMHO AOSP is the cleanest, simplest to use option available. Keep the stock launcher and just put phone, browser, text and email in it...

No ROM is going to fix stupidity. No offense to your in laws.
That being said blu Kuban is a good choice for customizing to her specific needs. I usually refer to it as the "build your own ROM" ROM. However she may be a little daunted by the frequent updates and large amount of options. If you do choose that ROM I would highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the faq in my sig so you can send to any issues she may have with it. Also any ROM by team VeNuM, especially m'ICS or blue BOA would be a good choice as far as stability is concerned.

Hehe, none taken. She's not stupid, just "technologically challenged."
I can't remember where I saw the screen shot, perhaps an article on Android Authority, but I seem to recall seeing an initial setup screen shot from a GNex w/JB - shortly after Google launch party. That screen shot allowed two options, basically beginner or advanced mode. I believe I came away with the impression that was geared towards the UI too, not the setup method.
Now, I know JB ROMs are in alpha stage for the e4gt. Do you think I should wait for, what looks to be, an official JB release for the SGSII from Samsung?
Thoughts? Has anyone else seen, read, heard, or experienced this "beginner mode" on JB - or were the paint fumes at my office gettin' to me more than I thought they were that day?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
JB roms are not quite ready yet. There was some type of easy setup thing though. Honestly your best bet would probably be a simple launcher and lockscreen.
Keep it stock. Use a different launcher and remove all but one screen. Put the things she uses most on it as shortcuts, then lock it so she can't accidentally mess it up. Did that for my wife and it really helped!

Ive been using the TeAm VeNuM cRaCk StOck[FH23] for the past couple of days and you cant get much more simple than that. Only change I made was switch to the Apex Launcher. The battery life is incredible!!!!

I find GB more stable then most ICS ROMs. Great battery life awesome signal and great GPS locks. Most GB ROMs are complete and done with updates due to ICS coming out. Currently ICS is still being updated and has many flaws. A lot of the devs like ruj and mijjz got their stuff in order but they update a lot and may irritate your mother in law.

Hey, I'm considering getting the Note II very soon, and even if this turns out to not be possible, I'll probably still pick it up as it's a great looking device. It's between this and the Nexus 4. This phone has the edge right now. But the reason I love the Nexus 4 so much, I had the Galaxy Nexus before I broke it, is the Stock Android experience, that pure, clean, feeling. Now I know that it would be possible to flash a stock 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean ROM onto the Note II not a problem but then my worry is that the S-Pen features and the Split Screen Features and the other major Note II selling points like the Notepad and Sidebar feature would no longer be there which kind of just makes the phone a big Nexus, which I don't see the point of really. So, if someone could point me to a forum post that shows me how to do this, or tell me how if you know yourself you'll definitely have sold the phone to me for sure.
SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE II STOCK ANDROID JELLY BEAN (4.1/4.2) ROM WITH SOME TOUCHWIZ FEATURES (S-Pen, Split-Screen, Sidebar, etc)
***** EDIT *****I was thinking, couldn't I just use Nova Launcher or something similar to get the stock Android Jelly Bean FEEL and LOOK and still have all of the TouchWiz features that I don't want to lose? If anyone can confirm this, or suggest another Launcher, comment please I'm still willing to Root if it means I can do anything to get as close to stock Jelly Bean without losing those amazing Note II features.
There is a rom based on stock with all aosp apps for the S2, and there is MIUI based on stock for the Note 2 which includes all those features, so it is possible, but not available...
I'm also waiting for something like that.

Thanks, is it still worth the Root then? To run root-only-apps? Because it seems pointless putting a Stock 4.2 ROM on the Note II if it means losing all the cool things the Note II can do with all that screen! I'll keep my eye's open for a ROM like this then!

My advise is to keep the original version by Samsung charging on a launcher like nova (as you mentioned) or even the original launcher of 4.2 jb (it was exported from nexus 4..I tried it personally and it was fast like a rocket)..
In this way you have a super stable rom with the original pure Google launcher..
..waiting maybe for a custom with those features. I think in the meantime is the best solution

JellyBam includes the Touchwiz launcher and it is based off of CM10/AOKP. You won't get all of the stock features but if you're only needing the launcher you could try that one out.

you should try to keep all your questions in 1 post. you'll actually get better help that way.
you are on an AOSP rom. you want TW features which are woven into the stock firmware's framework. its essentially a choice: a few TW features vs custom AOSP optimizations. both can share some similar customizations, but not everything is interchangeable.
Any of the feature on TW WILL NOT WORK ON ANYTHING BESIDES TW.....
None!
They're dependant on touchwiz and won't work on anything else.

As long as source code for TW stays unreleased its impossible to port. That's why no devs bother to try and port. Its going in blindfolded. Same with Sense and other UI overlays. So when Samsung releases source code it'll be possible.

Ya, there are a lot of apps that allow TouchWiz like features. There is a MMS apk for AOSP roms that has the while in messaging put phone to ear for Direct Dial. Just search in the playstore TouchWiz or galaxy s III things like that.

Well for that particular feature, I recently discovered that Liquidsmooth (and quite possibly CM, as well as JellyBam and others) have this feature in the settings for the stock messaging application. It's the last setting, labelled as "Direct Dial", but it's pretty inconsistent with the auto-dialing. I've noticed that when I'm laying down and attempt to call it won't work because if I put the phone to my ear the screen just flips to landscape view, and stays on. When I'm up right it tends to work, however I haven't had many opportunities to test this out yet.
That would be sweet if someone got two working with aosp, they need to release the code...
