[Q] Flash from Boost TO Sprint? Is it even possible? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a Galaxy SII on Sprint, and I'm happy enough. I feel like I missed the boat on the GS3.
Well, a buddy of mine had a white GS3 that I have been eyeballin', and told me if I chipped in on a blue one, he'd give me his white.
Now I have a white GS3 that I want to activate - but when I called Sprint they said that the phone doesn't have a valid ESN.
Talking with the buddy of mine said "Just flash it onto your GS2. You're staying with Sprint and the phone is released from Boost from me - so it's legal. Go nuts. It's your new toy"
That's great and all, but for the life of me - I can't get it quite figured out. I've done a few days worth of homework, and while I've learned so much, I stumble when things start getting hard.
I've been using CDMA Workshop v3.8.7 and followed the guides here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895548&highlight=flash
While this has got me pretty far - I realized about most of the way through this video it's to flash FROM Sprint.
I've managed to get the phone connected (COM 11 if that matters?) and readable (Thanks to the Samsung password)
I haven't found the part to where I can edit anything outside my phone number.
The phone says it's my number, but the registration isn't taking because it's still the old ESN.
Here's what I've done so far.
1 - Open CDMA Workshop
2 - Connect to my phone
3 - Read my phone's info
4 - Unlock my phone in the Security tab
5 - Get lost and confused
So for those of you who are more experienced with Flashing / CDMA workshop (And I know that's pretty much everyone here!)
you'll get a grand thanks from me, and a warm fuzzy feeling if you could hold the hand of a poor fellow who's lost among the bits and bytes.
Thanks in advance. -FF

I also have DSF if that makes a difference. I'm willing to use anything you guys suggest to make this work.

I'd get a new phone, and a new friend. That's a hell of a friend you've got there.
But seriously, if you sell the bad esn siii and the good esn sii, you ought to be able to get close to the purchase price of a good esn siii and avoid all this work.

Usually a bad ESN means the phone was either stollen, went missing, or the bill wasn't paid. Never buy a phone with a bad ESN. Your friend screwed you 3 ways from sunday..

Are you sure you really want to root it? What's the reason? If you do I would suggest more reading, all the answers you need are already there.

Yours is the GSM model, everything you need will be for maguro.
Roms, recoveries etc.
Don't flash things that say toro or toroplus.
Use search to find stuff yourself.
Use my sig.
And as stated, follow GSM outlines.
thanks guys/gals, will do it tomorrow
it helps a lot....
someone asked the reason - security and restrictions for apps (like allowing them to access wifi, but not mobile usage) - basically giving me more control over what happens
Edit - what gives, i just got "congradulations, you are the melbourne winner for today" - and it just took over the whole page??

lmfao. You're really clueless, huh?
Don't root your phone until you are ready. It doesn't sound like you are yet.

I absolutely agree.
It's almost 100% certain that you will end up breaking this phone within 3 years or less.
Then again, I am a 17 year old with a serious addiction to tampering and modifications...
Just letting you know that it IS possible to make a stupid mistake, then have a phone that has a faulty recovery parition with no way to flash because the battery is too dead and it won't charge because your /system parition is wiped clean.
Personally, I have a insurance program from Sprint because my father is a smart man and doesn't trust me with $800 demo phones and tablets lol
What i'm trying to say is that it's much easier to go "Woops. I hardbricked it. Time to wait for a replacement and pay $35", than "Woops. I hardbricked it. Time to shell out $500 for another phone."

You can fix that by splicing up a USB cable.

nope, just expected more from such a tech forum....
have installed a ad blocker now (new laptop)
not a noob to computer, just very careful
**** Update ****
Jubakuba
have tried both methods for adb - (for dummies and C something)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529058
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK#Windows (tried this one first)
and both times, it wont recognize the phone ?? my laptop see's it -just not adb
with this one http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK#Windows
on 13&14 it says "on success" - but it wasn't successful
my computer can see the nexus for files, ADB just can't see it ??
I get down to 17 - but i want to check with you first....
when it says "You will probably see Unknown Device with ADB listed under it with a yellow exclamation mark. "
there is no ADB - but there is a device (the nexus) with a yellow exclamation..
if i update this driver (as it tells me to - 19) but i have to right click on the yellow exclamation - which is the phone
wont i change the driver on the phone instead of the computer?? (i am using windows 7 - and usb debugging is ticked)
i wish i took a photo, it would have made it much easier (maybe it is a problem with the screen locking on the phone??)
sorry, forgot to mention, this was the first time my phone has been connected to the computer (maybe that has something to do with it)
any help appreciated

[Q] does the metro pcs SGS3 belong in the t-mobile forum?

relatively recently I acquired the Samsung Galaxy S3 from metro pcs. Ive been registered with you the fine people of XDA for all of about an hour now and hopefully this first question I post will be by far the most remedial of any I post.
I have the SCH-R530M and am unable to find a "correct" forum for my device. With the upcoming merger between t-mobile and Metro it made the most sense to post here and ask if there is a forum for me that i have overlooked and just missed or if this is indeed where i should post for the closest approximation of information for my device.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes you should come to the T-Mobile forums, but I would limit my posts if you mess up on anything, ie flashing ROMs/etc., and if you have any knowledge when it comes to ROMs about the whole S3 family it's that the files for each carrier are shown as dat&t, dtmo, dvzw, so if you flash any ROM you should dig into the files and change those values to Metro.
People do that all the time like flashing an AT&T ROM on their TMO version, just change the values.
I dont know about the Metro s3 as its a CDMA but check out PureMotive guide on the verizon forums. It may help you. Also Check Android Forum they have a lot of metro pcs phones listed in there. Its like xda

Um....you should limit your posts since you don't know what the hell you are talking about, you are encouraging this dude to brick his phone.
As the previous poster said it is a CDMA phone (no simcard) so you have the potential to brick your phone by flashing something that's not made for it. What I would do, is google it. "Metro PCS Galaxy SIII XDA" see if you find a section for your phone.
thanks for the input guys, right now my plan is to unlock and possibly root the s3. With it being cdma I'm then going to have it flashed over to a far cheaper service running off the Verizon network, this way I will have a fully functional s3 fully unlimited and service in virtually everyplace I choose to roam. right now the "sister carrier" doesn't have the ability to flash the S3 to their service. so im just waiting it out for now, figured maybe i'll tweak my 3 and possibly root it before I switch
metro pcs GS3/ sprint GS3 and shutter sound
just in case anyone else who got their GS3 through metro i thought i would through up a small helpful hint i figured out a while ago. I know alot of people myself included hate the shutter sound on their camera and with most phones you can willingly shut that sound off for capturing images. on certain carrier models of the GS3 the carrier locked this option so you aren't able to shut the sound off ( sprint has done just this) and it can become quite annoying.
you could get another camera app and just use that and it being the awesome app that it is ( whatever it is) has the option to shut off the shutter sound. this is one option, but one that I surpassed in favor of an app that can handle my little shutter sound issue and do more quite conveniently.
the app is called AUTOMATEIT. with this free app you can set triggers and rules for when those triggers are optioned. i use this app for a great many things, but i found it quite hand for silencing the camera. the rule i set was that when the camera app was activated the entire phone went to vibrate mode. when my camera app is launched the phone vibrates and this signals that indeed my camera is up and ready which is quite handy for the quick pictures that catch you off guard. when the camera app has ceased usage, i set it to go back into normal volume mode and my phone and I live happily ever after.
hopefully this post helps someone else as much as this knowledge has helped me.

As much info about GT-N7100 as possible

Hello XDA community.
I really am very frustrated and in need of you help.
TO make story short - i bought this phone and don't know what it is (version) how i can use it (as a cell phone) besides the internet
Samsung Galaxy Note 2: GT-N7100 - What type is this? I think it does not belong to any US carrier (AT&T, T-mobile preferred)
The most important question is if I can use it with T-mobile network?
I tried to follow the unlocking method posted on this forum *#972....#, but no menu showed up.
Please help me - I need all the information i can get.
Thank you
The GT-N7100 is the international version of the Galaxy Note 2..
What problems (in detail) are you experiencing?
I'm using mine on the UK t-mobile network
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
As the previous poster said, what you have is the international version of the Galaxy Note 2. That being the case it is not locked to any particular carrier. All it needs is a SIM card to make it work as a phone. Yes, it will work with T-Mobile (I have the same phone and I use it on T-Mob) although you could use it on AT&T if you wish.
Depending on what part of the country you're in, you may or may not get consistent 3G or HSPA performance with T-Mob because of slight frequency differences with your phone's radios. I get HSPA+ performance where I live, but if I drive a mile or so east, I only get EDGE speeds.Drive a few more miles, and I'm in HSPA+ territory again. Go figure.
Don't overworry about it. You have a great smartphone, and eventually T-Mobile's network will catch up with it.
Please more help

Thank you guys/Gal...
I am a little better now, but still very very confused.
Now that i know it is international version and will still work with t-mobile 4g - But VERY SLOW - I don't mind since I only use Wifi at home and work.
What i worry now is I put in my T-mobile sim card, and there still nothing showing up. The network does not work.
Any help please.
Don't know if it help, when i bought this phone it already has Super User -that mean they might have Rooted it.
Please help me
Can you try some other sim cards to see if they register? It might be network locked.. I take it you purchased it secondhand?

You're sure it's a legit Galaxy Note 2 and not one of the clones that are being sold?
Especially sine you say it's pre-rooted and you give us no details about where you purchaed it from.
What does the output of *#1234# give you? Please post a screenshot, or detail everything it says. Don't reply with "it shows some things"

First of all, thank you all so much for your help.
here are things
1) i bought this from a guy second hand.
2) these are info in the device (about phone), Model GT-N7100, Android Version: 4.1.1, Baseband version: MAUI.11AMD.W12.22.SP.V7.P3, 2012/12/27 1.22; Kernel version 3.0.13 1217 v5 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jan 9 2013; Builder Number ALPS.Mod_by_vacation team; Custom build version 1356496656
3) I think this phone was Rooted because i see the Super User logo in it. Also i believe it was installed with Custom Rom due to the information in the about section
4) i decided to Unroot the phone and still Stock rom. However, to do this I need to put it in Download mode (Volume Down + Home + Power), but was not successful and the Image 1 appear (green android with red triangle and black exclamation), if i press home buttom, then the recovery list appear (image 2), but nothing work not matter what i press. THe only way is to wait for it to go off on its own, or to remove battery and restart
5) output *#1234# does not do anything. nor *#197..640# does not do anything either.
6) I tried ATT and it works like chams, but No T-mobile sim work.
Please help

Very sorry to have to tell you this my friend, but you have a clone Note 2, not a real one.
This thread and this one should show you a bit more.
Sorry mate, not the news I wanted to give you.
VERY slow part itself raises the massive red flag. Check the following and report back:
a. Do you have full 16GB storage space?
b. Do you see S Pen option in settings? If you do enable airview and see if it's working well now. If it's original, AirView should work well.

SInce we are at this, I want to ask
I was able to save the seller's Phone number (this att sell phone), this Car Plate Number and made and model. Do you think reporting to police/samsung would help?
Also I threated him that as well, but so far no use.
Also , why would it work for ATT phone

You could attempt to have him done for fraud I guess, very hard to know though. He might claim he didn't know he was selling a fake phone etc. Certainly I'd contact the Police and explain the situation, see what they suggest.
It might work, threaten him that you'll report him to police, did you do that? I say go ahead, it's illegal to sell replicas let alone cheat you like that.
It's pure chance - something might work, some might not. That's the whole point of replica phones, they suck. No idea why Sprint wouldn't work on that, personally.

[Q] Samsung note 2

First of all I would like to thank all of you hear that have sound wisdom in dealing with my nightmare. I'm so new to this that my last phone's antennae is still on the top of my care and phone is in it's big carrying bag LOL. I'm 50 years old but am not done trying to learn something new. Here's the problem. I have a note 2 i317 that i bought online from someone. It's build number is jedi xp 9 android 4.1.2 Dernel version 3.0.31 SaberKernel_07+ptmr3 ect ect. So I have little to no signal strength and cannot hook up to the internet. I've called straight talk and spent an hour or two with them as well to no avail. I've been up and down these posts but I'm lost as how to employ some of the things that I have read about. Remember that I'm a noob to the max. I would love someone to put the instructions on how to fix my phone, in plain english that i can understand. I thought I might have a bad sim card as well but don't know how to check it. I've put at least 6 different apn's in and nothing. My old phone worked great in my house now i have this 500 dollars ornament that I can barely even get calls on. PLEASE can someone help me? I would be very grateful to say the least. I've read if you install something wrong that you can brick your device (whatever that means, but it doesn't sound good). I will be anxiously awaiting for the bravest soul to write me back. I say brave cause with me it might take a while. Sorry
Sincerely
Ed

Did the phone ever work at one point, or once you gained possession and tried it, you got the described result? I don't have your AT&T version phone but may be able to help with more info from you.
Is the modem is ur carrier modem?
Have u tried to change the modem to your carrier modem?

Yes it does work with voice and text messages but no mms and I can't connect to the internet cause of the weak signal I suppose. I haven't tried a new sim card just yet. Installed one that they sent me 5 months ago but when I called them today to activate it was no longer any good. They told me I took too long to activate it and they were sending out another one. As for the signal ...it's very weak. Like one bar two at the most. When we went to oshkosh over the weekend I saw that most everyone was on their cell phone and I couldn't call my kids unless I went searching for an area where my phone would work. I never had this problem before with my other phone that was through straight talk. I spent all day today looking for some more possibilities here and saw that maybe my modem on the phone is no good. I tried to download one and I did but haven't put it into the phone cause I'm scared that I might do it wrong and then the phone will be even more messed up than it is. i believe it's this one i717-ics-ucle2. The guy said it worked good for his straight talk. But if you all think that it's something different then please let me know. Thank you all very much for your time and patience with me. I will definitely try to learn more now that I found this wonderful website.

Sorry
Sincerely
Ed

Hi Ed,
the phone has been modified by the owner who sold it to you. He has changed the software oh the Note2. The Problem is we don't know whether there was any problem in signal for him as well. First check whether the SIM is working fine on any other phone. If it does, then I'm afraid you might have to restore the phone to the original Software to make sure this is not a Hardware issues.

Ed, I'm hoping the links provided to you from other posters has helped. Some of the suggestions have been to try flashing new modems (you're hesitant) and even to install a new ROM. If you have managed to correct your problem, kindly update the thread so other users can benefit from your experience.
If you've had no joy, pursue within the forum for your specific device (AT&T it seems) and good luck!

Hi all and thanks again for the help you have given me. I just got my new sim card today and it seemed to help. I can get on the internet now but my signal is still only one bar and sometimes not there at all. But at least I can connect via wifi. So the sim was partly to blame. Tweeny...I never said that I wouldn't put another radio or modem on my phone, I'm just not too sure about how to do it just yet. I don't want to ruin my phone anymore than it is. I should just dive into it and see what happens. If anyone else has anymore ideas as to why i have poor reception and also I still can't mms, please let me know. Thank you all once again. I will be a regular visitor here and hopefully one day I can be as confident and resourceful as all of you. God bless you all
Hi ed
i reckon u could read up and try flashing a different modem. beyond that flash a different rom. but u obviously have a lot of reading b4 that. good luck

[Q] HELP - child wiped out phone (brick?) and mom needs help...

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 (carrier is ATT) yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. I also posted this under the ATT forum too.
Thanks in advance for your help!
You bought your 11 year old son an M8?
Do you adopt?

Going by the pic, the bootloader has been relocked. So that's a problem. The bootloader will need to be unlocked again. I would suggest heading over to Youtube, as I have found video tutorials the most helpful when I was learning this stuff. There are plenty of videos that are even specific to the M8.
Edit: I should also point out that a phone can almost always be saved/restored if it still powers on. So don't panic. It would probably be in your best interest though to find someone experienced to fix it. Trying to explain the process to fix it here is not going to be helpful to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. If you can't find someone experienced, then my best suggestion, as stated above, would be to watch some Youtube tutorials on unlocking/rooting the M8.
Okay. In all seriousness.
When was this screen grab taken? In other words, is this your current position with the phone?
Relocked... etc etc
Are you in the US on AT&T?
Your tech son needs to restore ATT backup.. Hopefully someone in that forum has it

UPDATE on my son
Thank you all so much for your responses! It is much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but I think you know what I am talking about -- it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I guess he "retraced" the steps he did last night and was able to get it. Actually it's strange the first ROM he put on wasn't allowing him to find or pick up wifi. He found another and got it. This kid is good!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!
p.s. I typed the wrong key -- he's 12 not 11 And - sure I'd adopt! But he did save up his own money to get this phone and only wanted it to do these "cool" things as he says to it.....rest of my family - we are simple and use Iphones -- sorry.
All I can say to this is Wow!!

I'm glad to hear everything worked out for you and your son.
It's great to know that you're letting your kid tinker around as he is. I know these are quite expensive devices, but we often do learn from our mistakes, and that is even more true when it comes to technology. I'm sure that I have a bit of a bias being a software developer, but tech is such a huge part of life now, and that is only going to become more so with time. So getting an early start as he is, your son is going to have a leg-up in the world, even if he doesn't choose this type of field as a career path.

Agree! But keep an eye on him, so that he sleeps from time to time. And hide your car keys!
Please don't create multiple threads asking the same question.

Thanks!! He's very into all of this stuff and always has been from a very young age -- started with Legos at 2. He doesn't play sports and this is his "thing". He really LOVES all this stuff. He's actually really good and understands most things. As you can see - we certainly have issues now and then but overall we certainly let him "tinker". I really should write stuff down so we can laugh about it in about 10 years. We tried to limit his Internet time a couple of years ago and added a password on his computer that we had to input on his computer to gain access. Little **** put a keystroke logger on the computer to get the password. Then he somehow modified the main password screen to say PENIS when we logged on. The stories go on and on....... We will let him continue his technology building and hopefully he really have a bright future in technology!
Thanks for all of the input and support from this forum!

I was the same from an early age and always have been. I have taken apart or modified more household items than I can think of. I broke a lot of stuff messing as a kid, but now I have a lot of knowledge and can fix almost any thing properly.
It seems you are not so bad yourself with the technical stuff as most moms wouldn't have a clue or even be able to repeat what you have explained here.
