I'm not new to flashing been doing it for going on 5 years. I got an T989 and wanted to put a custom rom on it. I followed instructions to install CWM using ODIN and got my CWM working, I flashed CM10 stable hercules following the instructions exactly (factory wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvic, flash modem, flash rom, flash gapps, reboot), When it reboots I get the roms splash creen for CM 10 andit stays there forever. I also tried Slim Bean 3.0 and get the same results. I've tried going back to stock ICS and starting over from scratch and each time I get the same result I get to the splash screen and nothing else. I am using CWM 5.0.2.7.
Anyone got any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong I've been reading post after post for about 4 hours now..

When using cwm 5.0.2.7 or below, use the dark side super wipe for all the wiping BEFORE flashing (data, system, cache, etc...)

Thanks, I actually just found a thread about the "proper way to flash" and seen that 5.0.2.7 was my issue, I upped to 6.0.1.5 we'll see how that goes
So, I used dark side super wipe, then flashed as per how I listed above and still same results . There has got to be something I am missing.

I would suggest using TWRP 2.3.1.1 there are no issues with this and you might find better results... just download goomanager app and press menu and select install openrecoveryscript and go through the setup see if you can flash then and good luck with your ROM flashing
NOthing wants to work for me today. When I try to install TWRP it says there are no recoveries for my device....
Try the flash able zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768742
And if you do use TWRP you will NOT need the superwipe scripts
This is very messed up, got the flashable zip, everything wen't fine, tried to wipe cash with twrp and device froze until it rebooted by itself. tried installing rom, and now I when I try to go back into twrp it hangs on the splash screen for TWRP. Now I'll have to ODIN back to stock to get back to functioning....something is definately not right here.
You forgot to wipe system. Factory wipe then system wipe...then dalvik and cache wipe. But darkside superwipe should have done that for you.
Sent from my SGH-T989
No, only use the darkside wipes with CWM 5.0.2.7. With 6.0.1.4+, just wipe manually following those steps I posted in that thread. Although you don't need to flash the radio every time. The radio stays no matter how many times you flash.
To make it easier for you..
Go back to stock. Root and install CWM 5.0.2.7.
When you get into recovery flash the darkside super wipe twice and flash the ROM. Then gapps. Reboot and you're good to go. The issue is that you tried using the dark side wipes when they're only meant to be used with TWRP and versions of CWM 5.0.2.7 and lower.
CWM 5.0.2.7 for this phone didn't function correctly so TDJ made those scripts with fixes included specifically for CWM 5.0.2.7.
Point is.. only use TDJs wipes with TWRP (any version) or CWM 5.0.2.7 or lower. With every other recovery just wipe manually as stated in that thread.

here is the issue darkside wipe works fine with 5.0.2.7, but I still get just the splash screen of the rom and no boot. When I use a newer CWM and I am preparing to clear cache the phone freezes and goes into a boot loop, same with TWRP. After using TWRP last night I got screwed and couldn't even get back to recovery. I odined a 5.8.1.3 version of CWM to see if I could back into recovery and I can, but it says E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log and E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log.I also can't do anythiing in the recovery as every time i press a button it reloads. I'm just waiting for the stock telus rom to d/l and going to odin back to stock. I'm really lost. I'm starting to think I might have bad nand.....is there an app I can check that with?
Finally, the instruction to use 5.0.2.7 and dark wipe 2 times before installing rom worked Thanks for all the help all!
I also use the darkside cache wipe after flashing the ROM/gapps which properly wipes cache/dalvik on cwm 5.0.2.7.

NO. Only use the cache wipe if you're having issues. Cache wiping after ROM installation is absolutely unnecessary. Let's not muck things up here.

SHG-T989 on TMO. I was running CM 9.0 but wanted to update to 9.1. NOW I CANT DO ANYTHING!!! Here is what I did:
1. Downloaded the CM9.1. 2. did a backup through CWM. 3. wiped data through CWM, "wipe data/factory reset. 4. wiped cache partition through CWM. 5. did a Darkside Super Wipe through "install zip from internal sd card" (last time installing CM9 i got stuck in the boot screen and had to go back using Darkside Super Wipe, reinstall CM9 and it worked fine). 6. Reboot to recovery. 7. installed CM9.1 through "install zip from sdcard". 8. installed gapps through "install zip from sdcard". 9. Reboot.
It came up and was stuck in the CM9 boot screen. So I went back in through CWM and tried to "wipe data/factory reset" and it wont work! Tried to go back to stock through Odin and it wont work! When i try to wipe data, the process starts and completes the "formatting /data, then gets stuck at formatting /cache. Does the same thing if I try to wipe the cache.
Im completely stuck and have no phone.
Which recovery version are you using? It might a corrupted recovery.
Try this recovery TWRP is cwm flashable:
SGH-T989_TWRP_v2.2.2.0.zip - 6.72 MB
Then TDJs super wipe and then install the stock ROM or any other ROM.

any updates to this? i'm having basically the exact same problem, formatting cache or anything to do with that partition freezes up on me.
using cwm 5.0.2.7 did a darkside super wipe, flashed on a JB rom (P.A.Cman), flashed gapps (20121011), wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, rebooted then got stuck on boot animation. rebooted back into cwm to try and wipe again and reinstall, no luck got stuck on formatting cache.
loaded up my nandroid which went fine, ended up installing twrp instead to see if that would help, rebooted into recovery and was stuck on the "teamwin" blue screen and wouldn't go further multiple times. so, put cwm back on (6.0.1.5) to see if the updated version would work. nope, same thing- can't do anything with the cache partition.
any ideas??
luckily my phone still works fine with the backup i made. running aokp ics build 40, streamline #27 kernel, uvle1 radio. been running that setup since july with no real problems, just wanted to try out JB finally and seems now i can't
any help is appreciated! thanks!

Ok, the wipe scripts in CWM recovery v5 are broken! Got experience there because I got stuck on the PACman ROM boot animation.
So, for factory reset, use Darkside Super Wipe. Install zip from sdcard and choose the wipe. From there, install rom, then gapps, and then use the Darkside Cache Wipe. After that reboot and it should work (hopefully)
However the most important thing is that the wipes don't work in CWM recovery v6! It will do bad things!
So yeah, use super wipe to factory reset. Use cache wipe for cache. But follow the instructions to install the ROM.

Similar problem, but cannot make zips to work - HELP NEEDED
HI,
I hope you guys can help me. My T989 got stucked in the splash screen when I tried to update to a nightly CM10 ROM. I entered into Recovery MOde (ClockworkMod 6.0.2.7), then tried to use Darkside Super Wipe... but apparently the phone cannot open zip files. When I hit install zip from sdcard and then select one of the zips (I have tried different ones) it says "---Installing: /sdcard/sgh-t989_darkside.supe.wipe.zip"... but it does not move from there. After 3-4 minutes it reboots by itself and gets back to the splash animation, but never goes beyond that point.
I tried to sideload using ADB, but the phone is not recognized by my PC.
As you said, I think that the recovery mode is corrupted... but I cannot install a new version using a zip
Is there another way to reinstall a version of CWM that allows me to install zips so that I can follow the process you suggested (super wipe + installing ROMS)?
Help will be very much appreciated
Thanks for your time,
Enrique

Do NOT use that darkside superwipes with CWM recovery v6.X.X.X. Does bad things.
Use the scripts only for CWM v5.X.X.X.
Anyway, the damage is done and bad things have happened... So maybe check here

Either that or you can search the forum and Google around and see what you can find. I am in by no means an expert, but depending if you can access the recovery mode or not might be the key here.
I wish you luck, and hope that you don't have a very expensive brick.

Tried your suggestion, but Odin won't recognize my phone
Hi there,
Thank you very much for the answer. I actually spent hours trying to find something before I posted my question. Even before posting I found and tried the method using Odin... but my phone is not recognized by Odin. I followed the instructions but on step 4 I actually do not get any "warning" screen... and then the phone is not recognized.
In the meantime, I can get into recovery, but I cannot install any zips. I have tried to complete a factory reset, but the process gets stuck at "Formating /cache..." and then reboots. When I try to install a zip (any zip, the radio, a new ROM, gapps,... any zip really) it gets stuck too.
Any other ideas? I really appreciate your help.

The only other possible option I can think is to try and install another recovery....
However!
I have no clue how to do it, and in the end you might just end up making the issue worse.... Like hard brick it.
I might think of something later, but I don't know what else I can do for you. I will search around, but no promises...
Best of luck to you

Ok try here possibly
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970
I have seen a few posts saying that they just install this recovery and then restore a backup.
Ok to be honest, try restoring a backup first and see if anything happens there, and then try this thread.
However like before, this may make the problem worse! Proceed with caution and read and understand everything before attempting.
Hope you can get your phone back to functional!

samsung jig
Thanks again for the answer. A couple of days ago I tried to install a functional backup that I had from CWM... but it does not work It runs for a long while, then reboots... but it still freezes on the splash screen (my theory is that the backup is not recovered, as I know for sure that the ROM I backed up did work fine)... I think that CWM is corrupted and not working properly.
Then I tried the solution from the thread you mentioned... but adb cannot find the phone when it is connected
I found somewhere that I can use a samsung jig (microUSB with a resistance) to make the phone enter into download mode, then reinstall CWM using ODIN and then try flashing a stable ROM... What do you guys think?

I have a T-mo SGS2 with CWMR 6.0.1.4. I'm trying to install CM9.1.0. I ran Darkside Super Wipe (though now I saw a thread that says this is unnecessary with CWM6, d'oh), then flashed the latest T-Mo radio, then the ROM. I rebooted and it looped the boot animation for 6 hours and didn't get anywhere. I tried formatting data & cache through CWMR (no Darkside wipe), but it always hangs at formatting cache. I left the phone on overnight and it still did not finish. Darkside Super Wipe yields the same results. How can I fix this and flash CM?

This happens when you flash TDJs scripts on any CWM that isn't CWM 5.0.2.7. Go into the TWRP thread. There is a flashable zip in one of the posts. Flash it. It still hangs.. but says twrp was installed. When it hangs just hold your power button until the phone reboots. As soon as it reboots hold down both volume buttons and it should boot into TWRP now. Voila. DONT USE TDJS SCRIPTS UNLESS YOURE ON CWM 5.0.2.7 or TWRP!!! Refer to my how to thread I created.

No, it isn't the recovery. Its the script. The recovery works just fine until you flash that script and flash a TW rom. If you do this you get reboot hangs. As we all know TDJs cache wipe is required to fix this.. BUT the cache wipe breaks the recovery and from there on in the recovery hangs halfway while flashing or wiping. This very same thing happened to me with TDJs darkside evo 7. If you're going to flash TW based roms stay with either CWM 5.0.2.7 or TWRP 2.2.2.0.

File this under IWFM...
Have run into this 'cache hangs on formatting' issue twice now (the second time I should have known better...it was definitely use of darkside wipe that triggered the problem). Anyway, the easiest way I've found to get past it is with adb...
1. Boot into recovery with usb cable disconnected.
2. Connect usb cable.
3. Fire up 'adb shell'
4. Inside the shell, type: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p26. Hit 'enter', wait 10 seconds, then hit control-C.
5. Power the phone off, then boot back into recovery. You should now be able format cache without issue.
What you're doing is using a low-level utility (dd) to overwrite part of the filesystem structure of the cache partition so that it doesn't automount on boot (and get hung).

Your phones fine
If you can get into recovery. wipe data, wipe factory reset, wipe dalvik wipe cache. Flash cm10. Flash gapps. Reboot.
If you can't wipe anything in recovery and it freezes up. Your recovery is broken and you have to reflash it via Odin. Then go back and do what I said above

I don't know what your saying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tcffczu-0qA&feature=youtube_gdata_player. Watch this video. Download the files specified but the only files you will actually need are the Odin app and "Hercules.tar.cwm file. The only steps youd actually need to follow start at 3:50 and end at 6:27. This method will reinstall cwm version 5.0.xxxxx. As usual hold up down power to get into recovery mode. Use dark side super wipe and reinstall ROM and gapps then dark side cache wipe. since it IS the older cwm version 5.0.xxxx you do need the scripts. Once everything looks good and you decide to upgrade your recovery DONT use the scripts anymore. The newer recoveries do the work for the scripts
Edit:
Unlike the video explains you want to enter download mode before connecting your phone to Odin. I think to get into download mode you hold volume up / down then plug USB from pc into phone.. All at the same time

1. Followed instructions for flashing.
2. Flash goes well
3. Reboot
4. Stuck on initial splash screen for that room
Am I missing something? Or am i just bricked?
Thanks
Well, first how long did you wait? First boot always takes the longest. If it takes more then 5 minutes, reboot into recovery and delete cache and dalvik.

It was over 10 minutes. After I did what you said, it keeps rebooting now into recovery mode.
Here's what I currently have on:
1. CWMR 5.8 -Touch
2. TDJ Evo 4 v0
After a few booths I'm still stuck at the splash screen.
You may need a different recovery. The old recoveries did not wipe correctly. I recommend the latest TWRP

+1. Here is a flashable zip to TWRP 2.3.3.0.

It doesnt really matter what recovery he's on. The problem is he's not wiping his previous rom before flashing the new rom. On cwm I believe you go to mounts and storage, then go down to format/system. I never used cmw touch so I might be wrong. A safe bet is to google "darkside super wipe" and "darkside cache wipe". Download the zips and save onto your sd card. Then just flash those two before flashing rom. And you can flash the cache wipe again after flashing rom and gapps (its recommended by some devs but I never got the point since the caches havent been built yet)

Thanks for the help everyone!
I managed to get All Star Rom 5 to load. I'm using that to download goomanager and install TWRP.
I love All Star Rom, but Wifi Calling is a must. I think Infamous is where I'm headed. Any issues with TWRP on that one?

I was wiping and doing all that.
So, after I got goomanager, I installed TWRP. Through that I attempted to install Infamous 3.1. Now, all I get is the Samsung Galaxy screen before recovery/booting, and nothing but black. I'm not sure what I screwed up this time around. Any ideas?

Agree to disagree
Goo manager wiped your recovery. You need to enter download mode and use odin to put cwm back on. Then flash the twrp zip file that was posted above.

Thanks for your reply. I figured that out after spending 15 minutes looking for a TWRP file to flash through odin. I used CWM and everything worked like a charm. Reflashed TWRP. Then I downloaded Infamous. Didn't flash it through goomanager. Instead booted into TWRP, found it, then flashed. Everything is good now. Thought I was bricked for a few minutes there.
Thanks everyone for your help.
I just tried flashing this ROM. I can't seem to get it to boot right. I installed the ROM and GAPPS through CWM. When I reboot after installation, the Samsung flashes on the screen and there is no boot screen, nothing, black screen of death! I thought it might just take a minute but nothing happens, the screen remains blank. Any advice?

Did you do a proper wipe?
I flashed that ROM last night and had no issues.
I would restore your backup re download the ROM and make sure your version of clockwork mod is up to date and try again.

I am kinda new to this, when you say a proper wipe? I do wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, format system, format data, format cache. Another thing is that I couldn't get my back up to work . So I'm a little stuck. I have the backup files on my computer. Sorry, I'm a noob.

That's a proper wipe (actually its a little excessive but better too much than too little)
If you can get into recovery again (volume+ power and home) do a factory reset and reboot again.
If that doesn't work go back into recovery and flash again. (With wipes again) or flash another ROM.
Definitely make sure you have an updated recovery. (Clockwork mod is up to 6.0 something and twrp is at 2.4.1.0
The new Roms are 4.2.2 and need the updated recovery or they won't wipe and flash properly.
