Is there any simple ways to have google play music store music on my sd card rather then internal storage? I searched around a bit and most the stuff I found doesn't seem to work with the S3, or is a bit too complicated.
I bought a class 10 32 gig card and am not using it at all pretty much and want to atleast keep music on it.
Any ideas on how to make google music store music on the sd card and no internally?
You can download the songs from your Google Music account onto your computer, then copy them to the SD card from there and they will play from the Google Play Music app when you put it in your phone. There is also an On Device Only setting so you can see only the music you have stored locally on your internal and external SD cards.

you have to go into settings now, and select or deselect play music on wifi.. it's still there just worded differently...
It's a cool feature but I don't like that their pushing it so hard on us. I like the convenience but it shouldn't make other stuff more complicated!

If you have Root Explorer this will be easy:
1. Open root explorer and browse to the directory you want to store your music, for example if you want it in a directory called music on your external Sdcard go to /storage/extSdCard/ and create the directory music.
2. Long press on your new folder and scroll down to "link to this folder" and select that. Two buttons should appear at the bottom of your screen, "create link" and "cancel". Ignore them for now, we will use one in a bit.
3. Press the back button until you get to the root directory then go to /data/data/com.google.android.music/files
4. Here you should see a directory named music, rename it to something else for now (long press and choose rename)
5. Now tap the "create link" button we initially ignored. It should create a new link with the same name as the folder you created earlier. Make sure it is named "music" without the quotes and all lower case.
6. If you had any music cached, it will be in the original music directory we renamed. Copy all that music (should be numbers with followed by mp3) to the new directory on your SD card.
If you don't have Root Explorer, let me know and I will type out the terminal commands for you.
Also, sorry I forgot to yesterday. Cheers.

Not sure about the other member, but I am running into the same issue where Root Explorer (and root browser) is giving me the error when trying to create a link by long pressing the NEW folder, navigating to the Internal SD location, and hitting Create.
Any idea?
Worked perfect, thank you.
I tested it on the N7105 with a SanDisk SD Card.

This worked flawlessly on my SGH-i317 AT&T Note 2 with rooted stock ROM. I used ROM Toolbox Lite instead of Root Explorer, the directions are virtually the same. I only wish I hadn't deleted the cached music (as directed in another tutorial) before finding this method. No need to delete what you already have saved.
Thanks d3athsd00r!

My SD card is mounted in /storage/sdcard1. I created a directory called /storage/sdcard1/Play.
I used the following commands to move the already downloaded music to the new directory and create the symlink:
su (request superuser permission)
cd /data/data/com.google.android.music/files (change to the directory containing the folder "music" resides that contains all of the downloaded music)
mv music/* /storage/sdcard1/Play (move the downloaded music to the new folder I created on my SD card)
mv music musicbak (rename the original "music" folder to "musicbak"; this is because the symlink needs to have the name "music")
ln -s /storage/sdcard1/Play music (create the symlink called "music" which points to /storage/sdcard1/Play)
rm -rf musicbak (delete the original "music" folder from internal memory)
That's it and it worked for me.

You'll have to get a third party app for that that scans your music such as Tune Up (an iTunes plugin). Other than that, I don't know if there is one on the Play Store that corrects the titles. I know there is an app that corrects the album art but that's it.

Wrong section. Your post is supposed to be in "Q & A" section.
You just need to create a folder "Ringtones" in the internal SD card. Then copy your ringtones to this folder.

You could also put in the system folder if you have root access. I currently have the Skyrocket so this solution might not work for you. I put my .ogg file in /system/media/audio/ and then into the proper sub directory either /alarms /notifications or /ringtones. Then rebooted my system and I could assign them properly. Actually the first suggestion worked for me as well, but I just like having all my files in the same place. So it might work or it might not... i can't say for sure. I subscribe to the nexus development because g/f's mom who has the nexus and likes slim rom a lot.

Yeah I think that the .ogg will work for sure. I just used root explorer the app to find out what my other ringtones were and then converted the ringtone to that file.
You have to put your ringtones in a folder called "Ringtones". Not just in the internal SD card.

I have a few mp3's and ringtones I got from zedge as well and I couldn't see them at first - you just need to let the mediascanner find them. A reboot will force the phone's mediascanner to do so, or it'll find them on its own in a little bit.

Ringtone/mp3 files will not be available as ringtones unless they are in the ringtones folder. Rebooting the phone won't change that, at least not with the stock ROM.

One reason to NOT put custom ring tones in the /system/media/audio/ringtones folder is that if you wipe your system (to change ROM's, for example), is that the system wipe would then also wipe your custom ringtones. However, if you place them in the Ringtones folder on your sdcard, that doesn't get wiped, and you'll be able to use the ringtones right away after flashing a new ROM, and you won't have to re-copy them onto your phone.

The post before mine had already ascertained which folder to put them in, I was just adding that to force a mediascan of that folder a reboot would do the trick. Sorry for any confusion
install es file explorer on to your phone.
When you want to select a new ringtone, the phone will ask you to either select a "system tone" or "select a file" (using the file explorer)
then you just navigate to the sound file no matter what folder you stored it in (on your sd)

True, it cannot be done by "default"...or cannot yet be done by root...
But rather than just give up because it is said it can't be done....for non-rooted and stock (and anyone else- until it's figured out on root), there's a couple of options to accomplish this..May not be the most direct, but it works...so this can actually be automated so your screenshots folder (or other folders/content) is copied to your external sdcard "at-will" or on intervals...all through an app or two.
That said here's a couple options you might consider, I've used 2 of the 3 here (cloud pipes and tasker) and they work fine for me for my uses (copying from internal memory items to the external sdcard or to dropbox) without much effort at all.
TASKER (from the google market) it's about $6.
HOWEVER-- you can get a 7-day trial from their website http://tasker.dinglisch.net/ to test it out.
With this, you can either manually click the task to copy OR set up in the app a task "profile" to have the copying occur at a specific time.
You also set the task itself to copy FROM a specific folder or files TO a specific folder or files (ie. from the phones internal screenshots folder to an external sd screenshots folder).
There's a plugin for tasker in the market that will let you even make an "app" of sorts that you can create a shortcut to function like this that you can place on a home screen and run "at-will." The plug-in works with the trial also.
An alternate and free way is using a dropbox account and download the Cloudpipes app (free in the play store).
You can set up cloud pipes to manually or automatically (yep, even with a schedule) copy files/folders.
It will move,overwrite,copy or copy newer versions and sync to a folder within a folder specified in dropbox. You can also set it up to download from dropbox to your your sdcard on a schedule..
Another thing that might work, though I have not tried would be something like gscript lite (free in the play store)
and create a script to copy the folders or files.
From there you could either
a) create a shortcut on the home screen to the script for manually running
or
b) try using something like Llama Location Profiles (free in the play store)
to automate the task.
Hope this is useful to other like-minded folks...

Android command "screencap -p file_name.png" let you take a screenshot and save it where you like. For example:
screencap -p /extSdCard/ScreenCap001.png
does a screen capture and save the result to my external sdcard on my rooted TF101 in KK4.4.
Try a similar command through a terminal emulator on your device. If works, you can do the following
1. write a sh script file to do screencap with file name automatically set based on date-time
2. install LMT(free floating app launch manager), and run the script as an LMT piechart item.
The benefit of using LMT is that it is always at your finger tip.

I use "Terminal Emulator for Android" by Jack Palevich.
Not sure whether the metod works on non-rooted device.
Even if it does not work on your non-rooted device, you can still "save screenshots to extern sd card automatically". I see some one befor suggested on copying screenshots through tasker. What I want to add are two points:
1. use tasker file change event to detect any change in folder "/Pictures/Screenshots"
2. when the event occur, call rsync to move pictures to extSdCard.

Yes, i have seen this kind of suggestion but i really don't like its approach. Nothing wrong with it but, i would prefer to let the screenshots be saved in one location and nothing else. If i can get somehow to make them be saved on the ext SD card, good, if i can't ... i'd keep them in the internal memory.
So, I let it upgrade, the new version is T.8.0.0.12, and as you can see by the attached screenshots the only choices are pay $2.99 a month, pay $0.50 a month or watch ads.
The little ads in the listing are animated, and the large ads on the playback screen are 1/3rd of the screen.
Just doing the exact same thing with foldersync. Great app. Wondering whether it uses a lot of battery if you set it to instant sync, as I'd assume it has to somehow monitor the folder for changes...but I don't understand these things!
Hi! friends do you know?you are able to hide a folder from anyone without using any softs or apps.It can possible with your android's file manager;which are almost inbuilted in your phone.Just follw the easy steps to hide a folder with it's contains.
»»INSTRUCTION:
First open your phone's file manager,then choose the folder you want to hide.Next just RENAME the target folder you want to hide,just give a 'dot'(.) on before the name of the folder,and see the magic...BRAVO!!! folder was hidden successfully.To view the hidden folder,just go to the settings of your file manager and select "SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS/ITEMS",then the folder appears;to hide it again just unselect "SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS/ITEMS",the folder will be hides again.
If you have a bit problem with understanding the method,just see the example bellow-
»EXAMPLE:
Here "PROJECT" is a target folder which i want to hide.Just rename this folder from "PROJECT" to ".PROJECT".The folder will automatically hides.
»NOTES::
If your folder does not hiddening,then please check your file manager settings options to view hidden items.If this option is at 'on' mode so please 'off' the option to hide your folder.Then it works fine.

Here "PROJECT" is a target folder which i want to hide.Just rename this folder from "PROJECT" to ".PROJECT".The folder will automatically hides.
»NOTES::
If your folder does not hiddening,then please check your file manager settings options to view hidden items.If this option is at 'on' mode so please 'off' the option to hide your folder.Then it works fine.

Nice idea. I don't mean to be a spoil-sport, or a smart-ass.... But here goes...
Either that, or you can wear your geek glasses and do the following (root required).
1. Get Root Explorer or a similar app.
2. Browse to /data or /system or the root / or any other folder you like. But make sure you have got some free space left.
3. Mount R/W
4. Create a folder in any name you like. Let's say rktcool.
5. Put your contents in there.
6. ta da! You are done.
Now, your data is relatively more secure
If you want further security, backup Root Explorer using appSaver, or something similar, and then uninstall it. Now, the stock file managers can only browse your sdcard, and you have to install it (Root Explorer) again to be able to view your hidden files...
Pardon me OP, but I just happened to think about this one. Sorry for messing up your thread

I think the data being lost during a firmware flash is not much of an issue. It is same as an sdcard - you will always have a backup when you are going to format it.
I meant /system as an example. If that causes any problem, there are always other folders out there like /data where applications you install on your internal memory go. You could keep your files there and install apps on sdcard always.
Better still, you could partition your sdcard, and store your secret files in the second partition, so that they are not even accessible by the normal file managers!
Hi
I use this app for a while and never had any problem but I recently had to manually install all my apps and now I can't enter the folder of my podcasts located on my exsdcard.
I looked into Solid Explorer and Root Explorer to know what is the right directory: extSdCard/PocketCasts/Podcasts or /storage/sdcard1/PocketCasts/Podcasts.
When I enter one of these directories I have the attached error message from PocketCasts. I don't understand what's happen...
Thanks.
In the last screenshot it seems like you've only entered /storage, not /storage/extSdCard
Sometimes these paths are case sensitive too, so double check the spelling.

"/storage/extSdCard" isn't mentioned in the screenshot because it doesn't work
I've double checked the sensitive case but nothing changes. I'll try to format my external sdcard: I tried with /storage/sdcard0/ and it works so...
I deleted the existing "PocketCasts" folder on my external sdcard then the app accepted the directory /storage/sdcard1/ and it created a new "Pocketcasts" folder...
So it works now
I was getting pretty frustrated with how KitKat handles the ext sdcard permissions. After doing a search I came to THIS post by poit and it worked great. So I thought I would make a flashable for folks. All this will do is replace the system/etc/permissions/platform.xml with the only change detailed below.
*Note: I've only tested this on my device running Stock rooted obtained by flashing the [FULL RESTORE][TAR] Stock ND8 4.4.2 with Odin found HERE.
Just flash in recovery.
Down Load HERE
These are the instructions in case you would rather do this yourself.
Instructions:
1- Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2- Edit platform.xml
3- Find the following code:
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
</permission>
4- Add "<group gid="media_rw" />" so that the code looks like this:
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
<group gid="media_rw"/>
</permission>
5- save and restart

For some reason the instructions I posted are wonky and I'm unable to edit it. (Weird) so for now I'll just post this pick of the instructions until I can fix it properly.
Edit: got it fixed. I hope it's easy to understand.

It's not letting me edit my Debloater OP either
This worked great for external SD Card. Any way to get write permission on Device>Sd card? I can't download apps from Amazon App Store because it wants to write a folder there for the apps but it won't let it.
Subscribed for future use. Haven't had any issues yet, but I'm only on day 3 with ND8

If you deodex the Rom then use xposed framework in there that allows write permission. Or use a root explorer go to storage sd and then properties and change the permission there

This is what I get when I try to install xposed framework... Any ideas?
The only xposed module I use is wanam and I've not seen that popup so... BTW this isn't xposed.

Yeah but it's extracting the zip on the internal storage is what he means I think...I'm having the same issue where none of my apps can write to the internal storage, but external storage is fine

That was my my problem I used es root explorer mounted system changed permissions to all storage the changed system permission and added uid to system permissions. Then rebooted and all good. It had my internal sd blocked apps couldn't show thumbnails some could some couldn't.
Also I had that same error with exposed until I changed those permissions. Now all well got wanam call recording, back to kill, all the goodies

Can you expand on how you did this? I'm trying to do just this, but I'm not sure what you mean by mounting the system changed permissions to all storage...
Is that under the permissions.xml or is that somewhere else?

OK you must be Rooted and have supersu first of all.
Second open es file Explorer
Goto tools (swipe right) turn on root Explorer grant super user permission
Next I press root Explorer (the tool you switched on)
You'll see a pop up that gives you options click mount system r/w
Next navigate to each internal folder (legacy emulated and 0) long press each one separately
Long press o choose properties in the more section change to r/w on both the top rows all the way a crossed 3 check boxes
Do this on all 3 folders next
Navigate to system long press, then properties again check same boxes and also check uid.
Close out es and reboot.
Tada all apps work fine.

Of course why they have changed the permissions of the external sdcard is puzzling since the internal memory sdcard still allows full access. So, I imagine their next step will be the internal storage permissions. Isn't this a strange restriction from a company like Google who claims to be so 'open'. I guess they are hiring too many of those Apple defectors nowadays.
Anyway, I download podcasts, and I really don't like the way if I use the default external sdcard permissions that anything the app puts in the extsdcard/android/data/(app) directory gets deleted when I remove the app, and since most apps are being changed to abide by these new permission restrictions in kitkat, will this modification stop kitkat from deleting the app data on the external sdcard when the app is removed?

Easy way to find out is to backup the data folder and remove the app. Will probably take as long to test as it did to ask.

Plus getting the data folder and file permissions correctly set can be a little difficult.
It would probably be easier to backup the app with Titanium to begin with since it saves and restores the data for you.
Edit: And to address the original question about external SD saved data folder, I have no idea other than to copy it off before you remove the app and copy it back before you first launch it.
