HTC Desire A8183 nextG Telstra bought outright.
All works fine with as supplied 2.2
The biggest headache is phone signal strength ... at home usually ...
0 bar = 109-113dBm / 0-2asu
1 bar = 107dBM / 3asu
3 bar = 97dBM / 8asu
At work ...
4 bars = 51-61dBM / 23-31asu
This is with Telstra nextG sim in, at the moment I'm using Amaysim (Optus) and it's the same maybe a little worse.
Sometimes when you first activate the screen there's no bars then 4 then 3-2-1-0 again, with Amaysim you get broken conversation and occasional resend txt messages and telstra most times conversation was ok and no resend txt's.
I'v seen you can change radio ?! to help with signal strength ... or would it be better to root the phone and use ???? program, as mentioned it all work as I need except signal so not looking for better battery or features just get a better signal.
Side note are the program's used to root the phone only run on Windoze ?

To change the radio, you must be ROOTED.
Unrevoked works on Mac, as well. Download it from here.
BTW, are you getting a good signal at home with other phones with the same SIM Card?
You may also try set this:

Yeah LG U990 same problem on 3, Telstra nextG and Amaysim sim's.
WCDMA only, GSM only, GSM/WCDMA auto ... there the only choices in "preferred network mode" this is available in menu on 2.2 with going into the secret vault.
GSM only shows better signal bars but is worse in a call, I leave it on GSM/WCDMA auto.
I see there is more option in the vault might try them.
Is there any program that you would suggest that's ezy without to many problems as mentioned all the function in 2.2 are fine for me just need to get better signal.

Okay, so there is newer version, which I am using. The good news is, that the new radio is more battery efficient. The bad news - reception remained the same.
Bottom line, installing it won't get rid of your problem.
You need an antenna to boost your signal at home - because you've said, that you have problems with all of your phones.

I'v emailed telstra's customer service to ask if they would refund my money on the phone it's there own nextg branded phone on there network doesn't work,
there coverage map shows I should get full service, not holding my breath but feel like a bit of sh!t stirring is in order.

I hate to burst your bubble, but for starters, I doubt your phone is defective. Secondly, a coverage map means nothing. If you're in a valley for example and the towers are on the other side of the hills, you're gonna get bad reception.
I agree in some ways that a newer radio might help things. But ultimately your phone can only receive a decent signal strength if the coverage in that area is of that strength.
Perhaps go with one of those signal boosters.
I've used my Defy in Korea and there was no problem.
Yesterday I enrolled T-mobile prepaid plan(Monthly 4G $50 and changed my SIM card.
Talking and Texting is working but 3g connection isn't working.
On the status bar, there is "G" sign which means GPRS connection (I found it in google)
When I used Defy in Korea, there was "3G" sign or "H" sign which means 3G/HSDPA(much faster than GPRS)
I think my Defy is only taking GSM(GPRS) frequency.....
I setup "*#*#4636#*#* -> Phone information -> WCDMA preferred or WCDMA only" but still not working.
Now I'm about to try to find a US ROM and flash it... Will it be helpful??
I don't want to lose all the apps & settings........ but if it fix my problem, I'll try it.
What do you think about my idea??
You don't need to flash a new ROM
Your problem is quite common because your ROM (Koren) uses a different baseband. The baseband for US 3G networks is different. Just download the Defy Baseband switcher app from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 and apply a Baseband for US. This should fix your problem. So, you won't have to loose your installed apps and settings.

My phone is AT&T Galaxy S3 ( SGH-I747).
My hometown has only 2/3G coverage
After upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with room cook ( of CM10, Slim Bean or AOKP ), I had tried to enable Data Connection in 3G and something was happened:
+ In network mode was set to WCDMA Prefered and already enabled Data Connection
+ No 3G icon, always display EDGE icon in both of 2/3G cases.
+ Tried to test speed by accessing Internet or using the tool "Speed Test" => speed was very slow ( < 50 kbps )
+ Inserted my SIM to Iphone and test again, everything was OK, download speed was very good
+ Compared APN setting in Iphone and my galaxy S3 => They were same.
Pleas help me to find out the reason
Go into settings--> about phone,maybe even phone status and see if you still have an imei number, should be a 15( I think) digit number. If its zero or all zeros then check out peoplearmy's thread in the stickies in the android development forum.

So sorry, I had checked it. My IMEI is not zero. But Mobile network type was always EDGE
After that, I rollback to ICS stock rom, then checked again. Everything was OK with original stock rom
- I chose WCDMA Prefered => Mobile network type was UMTS.
- I chose GSM only => Mobile network type was EDGE

i have a new note2 ALJ1 baseband, ALJ3 build .. stock Thailand firmware.. rooted then stock kernel put back. no updates showing on kies.
MY phone is not changing from edge to 3G/H++ automatically.
Thailand has sketchy 3g coverage so changes a lot.
when i am in an area that has 3g activating data the phone seems to prefer going to 2g/edge instead of 3g ..
and the only way o seem to be able to use 3g is by changing network mode from auto to WCDMA ... then having to remember to change back after i finish internet usage or i will not even get a phone reception when i get out of a 3g area
its not a sim card problem i do not think .. i had an S2 then a S3 with the same card and did not have this problem

i've tried *#197328640# and aquisition order is umts-gsm.. cannot change as it always says invalid choice
is there a hidden settings menu perhaps for setting preferences on priority perhaps ?
Hi, I have a problem with my mobile provider, since last month 2 available provider in Italy unified the network. I am pledged with one of them which is "3 ITA", wich is, the main provider of both. The second provider is "I WIND".
3 ITA users goes roaming with "I WIND" when signal strength is low and this is ok, it's free and we like it. The problem is when you turn back in the first provider covered zone, but my phone keep having "I WIND" unless I manually select using settings tab the network wich I want "3 ITA 4G". I am requesting a mod/app or anything else (I have root) wich can block directly the change of mobile network. For example if 3 ITA signal is poor I don't want it roam in I WIND, any ideas?
