So, I am finally going to make the move ... I have two Samsung Vibrant phones, running SlimBean 2.8 and LOVE the ROM... but going to probably get the S3 this weekend (T999 for T-mobile)... Looking for a very fast and stable ROM, 4.1.2. The phone will be rooted as soon as I get home with it and all the stock garbage yanked off... Just lookin for some advice. I wish Slim had a ROM for the S3 T999 but... no dice... no dice.

Is it necessary to flash bootloader and radio also when flashing a custom rom?
Basically thats the only thing holding me back now because im not sure.
I've already unlocked and rooted, just not ready yet for a custom rom
I'm new to the Gnex too, but spent two years trying to get an ancient Galaxy Spica 5700 to run CM7...
Got the Gnex about a week ago, and immediately started looking around here. I chose AndroidME CM10, because it looked good, and in the developement thread no one seemed to have problems, and they said the battery life was very good. I can't remember if it's GSM only though.... Anyway I'm very happy with it, no probs at all, and battery life is good. I see that generally in America all you guys who use Google Now and all that and have different network frequencies complain about battery life, but I don't really use the phone that much, and with this ROM I get a few days with minimal screen use. There are also two other ROMs by the same dev, a modded stock JB and an AOSP JB. I like the look of the new Codename android 3.3.1, but in the dev thread too many people have little problems, and after years of limited functionality on my old phone I just want something stable and nice, to relax for a while. At least until I get bored...
RE baseband, If you look around in the forum (General forum I think,) you'll find a page all about basebands and with packages to flash them all. On my GSM I had to change the baseband, because you can't use the original baseband with JB.
I dunno what modding the Galaxy S was like for you, but based on my past with my Spica I'm loving my first Nexus device, it's all so easy! Good Luck
Thats so easy!!!! Just go for CM10, then change to AOKP, then go all in Paranoid, then just flash Miui and be happy :highfive:

If you've already received the JB OTA, then the bootloader and radio are already up to date. You could always just flash a custom recovery and SU. I've been running rooted stock since I got my phone
Whatever you're first custom ROM is, BAMF Paradigm will be your last, because once you flash BAMF, you won't want/need to flash anything else

Hey, I came from Spica too. That was so buggy and slow despite the attempts by various devs. Used it for 2 yrs. GNex is so much better.
Anyway for the OP. I wanted the stock experience initially. So i am on Android Revolution and stock kernel. Wifi reception is pretty poor. Many have reported that on different ROMS. Will have to try out different kernels or wait till google gives a fix. There are no other issues and battery life is good. But i am getting bored with stock. Might try Xenon HD.
Xenon is a great choice had it till the new MIUI came out. For kernels I have had the best battery life with james bond. Have not tried slim bean yet but I ran slim ics and it was great. I think the rom was only like 50 mb

Hey all, I'm kind of new to the forums so hopefully Im posting this in the right place.
I am the owner of an AT&T Galaxy S2 as well as an AT&T Galaxy S3, and I have found that in the ROM community that generally the AT&T phone ROM options are always pretty far behind. What I mean by this is that say, when there are broken nightly builds for AOKP or Cyanogenmod for my phone many others already have stable releases. This is okay with me. They do what they can. My question though is, is there any ROM that turns out stable releases of their rom for my two phones quickly and consistently? Does it have a name?
Thanks in advanced!
The only one off the top of my head that is updated frequently by the same Dev(s) on the s2 & s3 is Aokp by task650 and ktoonsez.
It is perfectly stable and is by no means buggy or broken on either the s2 or s3.

Small bugs* but they get worked out quickly with updates VERY freq.
no need for threads like this
Just got my S3 last week. Already rooted it and LTE seems to work for me in Boston. Got that latest ROM pushed in. Now I am lusting after JellyBean. There is just so much choice out there. I just want to make sure I retain LTE and TouchWiz. Rest I am openminded about.
The only tw rom that is jellybean is the ported rom from leak of T-Mobile here is the link

[ROM][LEAK] Stock TouchWiz JellyBean (T999UVDLI7 Leak Port) - 09/15/2012 (NEW BASE)
This is tw jellybean but there r bugs in there and not stable u can search that thread and see. That would be the closet to a stable jellybean touch wiz rom. Another way is to do Aosp or cm10 and get a theme from the play store that mimicks touchwiz. For LTE u need to look at the thread I posted and see for cm10 and AOSP.

I'm actually running that leak now its not too bad in terms of stability. They worked out most of the issues with it.

If you don't want TW, Paranoid Android worked really well for me. I can't speak for it's LTE performance, as I live basically in the middle of the desert.

I just bought my white Note 2 last week, using it on Straight Talk $45/Month plan = awesome
Was shocked how quick and easy rooting this was, I am not a super tech geek, but this phone was rooted in 5 minutes with the plastic still around it. No Android phone has been this easy before for me.
I have now become a flash-oholic
Anyways I started off trying like 4 different Touchwiz ROM's, and some very good ones out there, then tried one OASP ROM, that felt flaky and just rough, so back to Touchwiz ROM again, which was super nice, but I still love AOSP and CM, so I tried a different CM10.1 ROM today, and my god this is a good one.
But my point really isn't about the best CM10.1 ROM or Touchwiz ROM, both have good developers working on them, and having fun trying a bunch of them out this weekend. Being on CM10.1 I do miss the S-Pen features and S-Voice for it's driving mode. For now I am happy with CM, might go back to a TW ROM if something new comes out.

OP there is an OT thread for just such posting....please use it.
On my note 2 I've had PA and I loved it. simple and easy but I just got started looking at serious developer ROMS since i got the note 3 and I don't have much knowledge on it and if PA is as effective as roms made already. So here are my questions:
Is paranoid android effective compared to let's say Jedi? And if it's not what's a good way to emulate it's features(such as hybrid)
Is it developed already for the Note 3? If not when do you think it will push out?
Since I've been modding with roms already made I have learned alot since my switch to the note 3. and I feel like I am way behind when it comes to developing and customizing(i just edited my first systemui on apktool last night) so it's been inspiring me to learn more. But i just love the simplisticity of PA.
Thanks guys! I look forward to becoming an active member on XDA!
PA is based on AOSP/CM. Until we get a built-from-source ROM available for Note3, you won't be able to get PA. IMO, the best thing in PA is per-app DPI, and you can get that with Xposed and the App Settings module. You also already have a better version of floating windows in the stock ROM.

If CM hasn't started supporting it yet, don't expect to see it on PA, AOKP, etc til then. Usually CM waits for recovery to be working on all variants before they start to really push for support.
Pay close attention to their gerrit here: http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/q/statuspen,n,z
But like I said once most variants get a working recovery CM and others will start to support the Note 3 in terms of AOSP ROMs. Right now, AT&T and VZW are both waiting for stable recovery. Usually once those 2 are going, since T-Mobile and Sprint don't really lock their bootloaders, it'll happen. Just be patient. We probably won't see 4.3 AOSP on the Note 3... more than likely it'll be 4.4 KitKat

Cool, thanks for the info! I figured that development on 4.3 for note 3 won't really happen. Kind of got stuck at the worst time to learn Android dev. Kit kat is supposed to be release soon i hope with the nexux 5. I guess untill then ill get to fool around with what is made now. And yes atnt and vzw are reeeeally strict on bootloading. Just one of many reason why i eventually switched to tmo!
Thanks by the way! Good info I didn't know CM and PA are related.

No problem. Yeah most AOSP based ROMs are based on CyanogenMod. Ones that aren't are ones that are built from pure AOSP, which usually are Nexus devices...

Yeahhh I guess it's best just to wait on it all. per-app DPI works really well and so does floating windows with touch-wiz, but, call me lazy, I would just like a way to have access to the windows without having to use the spen. But it's progress! For now I'm using the floating notification app which is pretty cool.

I know right? After using CM for so long on my note 2, TW is so bloated. I can't wait either AOKP or Illusion to be developed for my device.
This time around on my Note 3, I'm not using any CM based roms. On my previous phone, a mt4gs from HTC, I was flashing a different CM based rom every month or every other month but on a friends phone, a Note 2, I had put Jedi Master on it and was impressed. So I waited a couple of weeks after getting my phone, watching what was being released and ended up settling on the latest release by jovi23 of his DarthStalker rom and have been impressed with it. My only complaint and it is such a tiny complaint too, is that he has 4x4/5x5/5x6 icon grids for the home screen but no 4x6.

Well Personally I use sslauncher and that solves my grid problems. And I guess it's people preference, I just don't like TouchWiz. To Samsung: Note 3: Awesomeness, Touchwiz: Score of Zero. I started on DarthStalker which was awesome, but then I got curious about the roms made recently so now I'm currently on Jedi Elite, which is good too. I think I may switch back to DS because I've noticed some lagginess on Jedi that I didn't experience with Darth.
Sweet OP type building cm and Pa for the phone awesome sauce..
