[Q] To upgrade baseband or not, that is the question. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello all,
Was just wondering just got the 4.2 rom updated, and I wanted to know if I should or shouldn't upgrade the baseband. I've had the original baseband since the phone first came out and haven't noticed any problems.
Are their any advantages? Can my gps potentially improve if I do? If you don't know the answers, perhaps you can point me in the right direction.
Thanks!

Updating baseband might help with data signals, but I doubt it will make any impact on the GPS? To my knowledge GPS is controlled by the kernel and not the baseband.
It is important that the Baseband and Radio on your device match, since if it doesnt you might get signal drops. There is an app called GetRil on the playstore which checks if your baseband and RIL matches (Link to playstore).

Sounds good, so what you're saying is, if everything is already working fine, there really isn't a reason to upgrade my baseband?

[Q] Whats the difference between the inc radios?

I have 2.15.00.07.28 and I saw people with 2.15.00.09.01. Should I update my radio? Is it better? And if yes, what is the procedure?
I am on virtuous 2.7+powersaving kernel and Inc rEVOlution theme + other mods (trackpad wake, dsp, hulu etc etc). Dont know if all ROMs like all radios or not so posting my setup to be on the safe side.
Good question... I have not even seen the updated radio anywhere, so good info too!
honestly, i wouldn't worry about it. If your phone is working properly the radio is the last thing i would mess with.
a bad rom or a bad kernel can easily be fixed through recovery....
a bad radio = Bricked!
most roms just require 2.xx
you are fine.
But if you want to know a lil more...

[Q] Has anyone gotten an ICS ROM working with HSPA+ on an R800at? (US AT&T)

Title = Question.
The closest I got was the MIUI ROM that's up on the front page of the development forum right now. It was so close to working. It said "No SIM Card" but the calls worked!! And the -36 baseband was recognized! The only problem was that with that status message, the phone would not allow me to save any APN settings, therefore I could not get data access.
I also tried it with the -42 baseband. These should be the newest AT&T specific basebands available that are AT&T specific.
The real problem is, I can install 62 just fine, but it only supports the slower HSPA data speeds as these are for the R800i.
I don't really expect a solution but I thought I'd ask

Thanks! Do you use a specific CM9 build?
Also, which baseband do you use?
Do you have the call volume problems that many CM9 builds have? What about your proximity sensor?

I run FXP127 which I beleive was released fairly recently, Video does not work... ALTHOUGH if after installation you flash the Mjolnir4 Kernel and the modules (wont get wifi if you dont install the modules) the video works fine... the only problems I am having is the proximity sensor (just realized that today) as long as you dont leave the number pad up and close it when you dont need it, it doesnt bother me much. I am however going to research a fix for it this weekend.
baseband -62 It runs at the same speed as with at&t's newest BB I flashed back and forth from stock to CM9 ran speed test results are identical

Thanks again. The proximity sensor is one of those really tricky things. I don't mind Bluetooth audio not working, and other minor things like that. Video does have to work for me.
Actually I never had a problem with a non-working proximity sensor, except for Skype handling it very poorly. So I basically need it to work.
I have gotten all ICS roms that I've tried working on my AT&T play 4G(lol 4g). On some I may manually set the APN. I've tried KA11-14 Rom, Xdarkmario's Rom in .42 & .62 Firmware with Doomkernel ICS beta v.3, & CM9(can't remember which build) with CM's Kernel & recommended FW. I haven't tested for differences in speeds(data), but I got the H signal on all.
Edit** In NY area I hear that the. 42 FW with -56 baseband gets better call reception & less drops then newer .62 fw.

[Q] Baseband/Radio & Ril..

Hello.
Quick questions:
- Can the baseband/radio/modem (same thing, right?) be changed on a rooted S-ON HOX? Saw an old thread saying it can, but im not convinced..
- Where can i find information of different RILs, basebands and their compatibility
- Are there any reason for changing the baseband or RIL, and is it worth it? This is individual, but give me your shot.
I used GetRIL to change the RIL to what it recommended.. When i rebooted the phone, i had no GSM coverage.. Not the best first time experience with modified RIL...
Thanks in advance!

1. Yes, there is a thread called shipped radio collection with flashable zips, but I don't recommend messing with those.
2. Don't know. Sorry.
3. If you get no GSM reception after flashing a new ROM. It is pointless to change RIL just out of curiosity.
Some ROMs, including ICJ, require a special version of getRIL to be used: 0.94b if I remember right. Maybe that caused the issues for you.

I've had this problem 2 remembered times I believe, once when first going to Kitkat on my Jellybean Galaxy S4 and once when I updated my custom ROM to the newest version on my M8. Have you recently flashed a new ROM or update to your phone? If so then the only thing I can recommend you at this immediate moment is to either try re-flashing it or reverting back to what you were previously on. I searched for quite a while on how to solve the "WiFi won't activate or endlessly activates" issue and never did find any solution. Anyways there may actually be a 'better' solution to this but I never found it, if there is then someone else will reply with it.
If that is not the case and your issue lies elsewhere then please further explain your problem and what you did leading up to it to cause it, thanks!

Just some advice since you are new here: If you want help with a problem, best way to get it is to give as much information about your device as possible (carrier version, what OS version, OS version before you unlocked bootloader if applicable, if the phone is modded with custom ROM, and if so what custom ROM, etc.).
Problem with WiFi not turning on is common, and has been discussed on numerous threads. You probably need to update your firmware (hboot, radio, etc.), since if it's too old, it will not be compatible with current custom ROMs.
Also, please look at the dates of threads/posts before replying to (bumping) them. Digging up old threads is not recommended. This thread is over 2 years (going on 3 years) old. And the user you are asking, hasn't been active on the forum recently. So the chances of that person responded, is somewhat low. Even if he responded, the answer will probably not be completely relevant, as the OS versions, custom ROM versions, and a lot of other things have changed in the last 2 years. Meaning what that person did 2+ years ago, probably won't work for your today.
Although there are others here (such as myself) which will be happy to try to help, as long as you can provide more info as requested.

Coming from Verizon - firmware questions

Hello everyone. I have a Verizon M8 (unlocked/S-off), and I have switched to AT&T.
In order for my phone to work, I loaded ARHD (great ROM, btw), as the ROM I was using while I was on VZW did not want to play nice with the AT&T SIM card.
Everything is now working except for WiFi and LTE.
Based on what I've read, LTE on AT&T ain't happening on my device due to lack of frequency band support. But the WiFi problem is likely related to firmware, and therefore (I assume), fixable.
Here's my question: is it possible after I SuperCID my phone, to install the WWE firmware to fix the WiFi problem? Or will this brick my phone?
Thanks!

If your phone is from V you should stick to Verizon firmwares and kernels. There may be exception, but as far as i know Verizon and Sprint phones have other differences from GSM variants, not only firmware and/or kernel etc. Yes, your device can be used WW, but i'm pretty sure you cannot convert to full WWE. I went so far that i used QPST configurator and RFNV manager to unlock all the bands of my phone and yet i can't get LTE to work. I do hope someone here prove me wrong, but for now i'm happy i can use my phone in eastern Europe.
Thanks for the input. I was afraid of that. So I guess I'm stuck until new VZW firmware gets released, and then maybe my WiFi will work?
I guess I could look for a ROM that is using a different base and try that.

WiFi not working could be kernel related. What kernel are you running - stock or something else. I'm using lunarkernel+viperrom.
When i read carefully, you didn't mention on what firmware you run ARHD

Well, it's the right one for the job. My guess is kernel is causing non working WiFi, but i could be wrong. Did you tried some custom kernels?
